Commies on my TV said that Linoy had the highest base value though... wouldn't it then make sense for her to get a little bit of advantage even with mistakes? Dina also had one mistake during her ribbon routine, no? ETA: or was that her sister? They confuse me.

This sounds like comparing who has more quads. Scoring systems in all sports are more complex than that, even if it's easier to explain things this way, no?

Oh definitely. I was just wondering what the judges were basing themselves on (I'm not very familiar with RG's scoring system, I'm more the artistic gymnastics type). It's definitely not right to aware someone more points just because they have a higher base score - I think I was going more off on the fact that Dina also made some mistake(s) in her previous routine.

Dina hasn't made a mistake in her ribbon routine, that was her sister Arina (Arina had to change the ribbon eventually and finished 10th in ribbon which resulted in 4th place overall). Dina did her ribbon routine cleanly while Linoy made mistakes in the ribbon. Someone who has been in RG for 17 years told me Linoy had two mistakes, but the second one wasn't that visible on TV though the judges must have seen that. Her opinion was that judges didn't give out scores based on knowledge and Linoy was helped from the start (so the result was definitely political).

It gives me major Adelina vs Yuna vibes, Linoy had a bit of higher difficulty but her e score was huge despite of the mistake while Dina had a bit of lower technique but she did her routine clean. Linoy hasn't won any big AA titles so far, this is a first one for her while Dina won 3 AA World titles after Rio.

Thanks for explaining. I was almost sure I was getting confused between Dina and Arina and I knew one of them had made a mistake. I was watching it from the corner of my eye while working so me mixing up stuff was bound to happen.

Just shows the hypocrisy of allowing Russian athletes to compete under the ROC flag. Despite this, they are still considered as a Russian competitor representing their country. This was still an act against Russian dominance in the sport, and probably against someone as an individual athlete as well who had everything going for her with the results during this olympic cycle.

This taints just everything that the Olympics should stand for and I hate it.

On a brighter note, I'm crying again watching my volleyball boys getting their bronze medal :crybaby:

The match for Gold between Russian and France was crazy. I would have died if Argentina had been in that position.

I watched team competition of Rhythmic gymnastics, I really liked Italy and was happy for them winning bronze medal. Our commentator gave us details of scoring during the performances, like "0.3 point there", "0.5 point there", "a member dropped her leg, so that whole element won't be counted, "a half step made in catching, 0.3 point deduction there. If you made 3 steps, you will have 0.5 point deduction" etc. Some people were saying she spoke too much but personally I appreciate her commentary because I didn't know much about the rules. Unfortunately I could not watch individual event, but I was curious what she said about the performances of medalists and looked for the video with Japanese commentary, but I could not find it.

About Closing ceremony, I was worried for the weather of tonight, but it seems typhoon is leaving Kanto area so I think the stadium will be fine (it has no roof...).

It's likely it was against Russia as a country too, not just their dominance in RG. IOC itself is really hypocritical. If they took doping seriously they would do something against doping with the help of corporations (*cough* USA *cough*) too OR at least ban other countries as well that have state funded doping systems (I am sure Russia is not the only one). Otherwise sanctioning only one country is nothing but a political decision. At the same time they were still too scared to ban Russia completely from the whole Olympics so after all they let them compete here, only their medals are not counted to Russia but to ROC. It's a bit of a circus.

I am sorry for the innocent athletes who did their best to achieve good results and who aren't allowed to sing their anthem and see their own flag while on the podium.

I saw this tweet from Rippon which is such poor sportsmanship. He talks about tolerance and acceptance but when it comes to Russia he forgets about it.

Just because Dina Averina comes from Russia it doesn't mean she shouldn't deserve justice. Perhaps attacking an athlete's result that has nothing to do with doping is not the way.

Congrats to Russia for the Artistic Swimming team gold medal!

In the women waterpolo USA has won the gold medal again. They seem to be unbeatable. I am happy Hungary was finally able to win a medal here too, after finish at 4th place so many times at previous Olympic Games and World Championships too.

In the men's, I just finished watching Serbia vs Greece final. Serbia won and they defended their title.

Hungary won the bronze medal here too. The last time the team stood on the podium was in 2008 after the three consecutive gold medals so finally they have a medal again.

The Games are officially over. I couldn't watch much from the closing ceremony because we had guests for lunch but from what I saw I liked it more than the opening ceremony. Congratulations to marathon runner Kipchoge on defending his Olympic title, it was nice to see the two marathon victory ceremonies at the closing ceremony.

From what I've seen from broadcasts, reports and heard from athletes' interviews Japan did their best to organise this Olympics, congratulations to them! Even though the opinion of those who live there and those who have much more informations how things went there may be differerent but from the outside it looked like a well organised Games.  Many Hungarian athletes said the conditions were very good and they are thankful for the organisers and the help and warm welcome of the volunteers. The Hungarian Olympic Committe together with the embassy in Tokyo made a 'Thank you Tokyo' message which is now aired on the Shibuya Crossing every hour. :) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSTB6Y5HP9P/

In the past weeks I saw some videos and pictures in which Japanese welcomed our team and sent to our athletes cheering messages which was really nice to see. There is one very cute video that I saw yesterday: a children's choir in Tokoruzawa sang a song which is famous amongst Hungarian football fans and sent the team a cheering message too. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSQWLFEBsvc/ Adorable! :img_21:

Japan did well in the competitions too, congratulations on their medals at this Olympics. I was happy to see them finishing on 3rd place on the medal table right behind USA and China.

It was also nice to see many small countries doing their best and many of them getting medals at this Games. I'm also proud of how Hungary did here. Before the Games I predicted 18-20 medals for us (this was a rather optimistic prediction) and we finished with 20 which is great - besides the medals many finished on 4th, 5th or 6th places which are also great results. Everyone seemed to do their best. With these results Hungary has now the most gold medals per capita in the history of Summer Olympics (181 gold medals overall) and they are still on the 8th place on the all-time medal table which is so big considering it is the smallest country by far on the list.

If I have time maybe I'll watch some of the competitions again since it's still available for a for a few weeks (maybe even months) on the website of our sports channel, and I couldn't watch everything live and missed some events that I wanted to watch. :)

Again, thank you Tokyo and Japan, and see you everyone in Paris 2024.

The report says about 4500 people involved in the Olympics are leaving Japan today. (I think athletes competed in the first half of the event have already left). I hope they will go home safely.

The organization had been announcing the number of Covid-19 patients related to the Olympics since July 1, 430 in total were reported (including media, workers in the organizations and volunteers living in Japan) and 19 athletes withdrew. Honestly I was expecting more, but I guess the athletes must have been very cautious and taking care of themselves. It was sad there wasn't audience, but I think it was a good decision after all.

It's like I've just woken up from the dream, I don't want to go back to the reality but I have to anyway :dozey: Watching the sports is one of my hobbies, I love the excitement and am fascinated by special skills by the athletes, but what I like the most is that I am able to witness their raw emotions -happiness, sadness, tears, smiles, frustration, all kinds. It just hits my heart. I hope Paris will not suffer in holding the next Olympics as we did and have great success in peace.

(Lastly my rant...opening and closing ceremonies of Tokyo Olympics were the worst among all Olympics I had watched and I don't know if I want to laugh or cry :words:)
