General Yuzuru Chat

This is an excellent article about Yuzu in THE VARSITY, the University of Toronto's student newspaper since 1880. The University of Toronto is Canada’s top university.

Yuzuru Hanyu's mastery of artistry and technique

The "Ice King" is the embodiment and hope of figure skating

"Among them, one skater especially stood out to me as the supreme standard of both artistry and techniques – the embodiment of figure skating. Not only I, but the figure skating and Olympic communities also owe a debt to Yuzuru Hanyu for the impacts and changes he has made to the sport."

I love that they clearly called out how the underscoring has hindered him. It's a student newspaper, so there's more freedom to say whatever you want, but I still appreciate it. Author is clearly a fan, not just someone choosing a random topic to write about.

It's been a while since I've loggen in here.

So... how are we dealing with the drought so far? :th_tumbleweed:

So far I can "alleviate" these with Yuzu videos (also I discover videos which I have never seen before) and "YuzuSkating Parties". Of course I'm also grateful that the Planet exists and that I'm not have to survive this drought alone.:th_tumbleweed:

Let's hope that Yuzu is happy and that he is doing well in his cave.:smiley-angelic001:

Tomorrow the Ice Rink Sendai open again, then he can also meet Ice-chan again. :wink2:

It's nothing new, but here a Yuzu clip for our drought :tumblr_m230o5o5Gg1qfamg6:

I shared it under Martina Frammartino's post on PCS, so I thought perhaps I could share it here, as well.

So, I came across this very recent study that develops a model for predicting scores using a database of figure skating videos and they implement the model for simulating results from OG competition in Beijing, contrasting predicted with true scores. In short - this is an AI based tool to detect what the scores should be vs what they really are as given by the judges in the competition. One innovation is that they add audio modality to check how the skaters respond to music in their performance.

Unfortunately, they only show it for women’s SP and they only show it for 5 skaters with top *predicted* PCS.

The first thing you can see is that predicted PCS for ALL skaters presented were LOWER than true (eventual) scores.:

beijing-scores.png

For the 5 presented skaters the difference between the predicted and the true score was the following:

Valieva: +4,23;

Hendrickx: +2,4;

Trusova: +4,66;

Shcherbakova: +6,63

Chen: +3,88.

This also influences how the skaters would be ranked, PCS only: Valieva still no 1, but Shcherbakova in 4th, Trusova in 3th and Hendrickx in 2nd.

Of course PCS scores for 5 skaters are not enough to make any generalizations, but you almost immediately see that Russian skaters were overscored to the highest extent (look at Shcherbakova!), then Chen (US). Hendrickx's (from Belgium) score should be relatively higher and it looks like she was relatively underscored and ranked lower than she should be (SP, PCS only).

I will be observing these scholars’ work and will see whether they publish some more comprehensive reports from their simulations, especially if they do these simulations for men's programmes. Here is the link to the whole text: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2203.03990.pdf (warning: it is technical and the predicted vs true schores are in a small section at the end only and I want more!).

Yuzu's 3A with one arm folded during practice - he's amazing!

Oh okay, sorry, my brain has just processed this... Does that mean Rondo isn't in his final form yet? I can't wait to see the Rondo that Yuzu really wants to show us.

This is unbelievable! :jaw: Yuzu ranks even higher than Xiao Zhan and other absolute super stars from the entertainment industry. And this data is from March 19th, a month after the Olympics. Yuzu's popularity in China is incredible. And unlike these idols, actors and pop stars, he doesn't have any social media, no PR, no promotions, no show appearances etc. :ganba:
