General Yuzuru Chat

Just seen a tweet by a Nfthan fan saying N has dominated FS for 4 seasons and should get more recognition and interest!

I laughed a bit, then had a bit of a think about it, and actually, 2 of the last 4 years have been dominated by a virus, a global pandemic, where top skaters had much less opportunity to compete at all or against each other, and some skaters, like Yuzu for example, could not train at all in their usual environment and lost all their usual support systems. Some skaters were very wary of Covid and others less so - for Yuzuru, he (uniquely amongst top men skaters I think) had to consider his own health given his respiratory condition as well as his public health duty. That caused him some anxiety I think, and also maybe  influenced his decision re GP series 20/21 so he had less "match" experience. He also had to manage the 10 yr anniversary of the 2011 disaster with a couple of biggish earthquakes thrown in just before WC21, all significant in terms of managing trauma. Then I realised that in the other 2 years, Yuzu was either recovering from injury or injured...so the Universe, hand in hand with ISU USSF JSF, really made it much easier for N (though do recognise the virus gave rise to an increase in hatred/racism towards Asian Americans which I am sure N will have been affected by), and very very hard for Yuzu over the last quad.  Maybe we all know this already, but I hadnt fully realised it until I put it all together following reading the Nfthan tweet!

Blockchen has the strongest PR firm and fed behind his back & all the WRs but still can’t generate enough interest? Maybe that’s because his fans aren’t working hard enough, or Fanyus are too powerful,  lol.  Competition results can be manipulated but, as many have said, love can’t be bought or forced. Poetic justice.

Exactly, well summarized  In this world of wars and viruses and injustice in every field of life, there is Yuzuru and his skating. Sometimes I feel that he and Fanyu's love for him are the only really true and honest things in the world.

Besides no other skater has got such a vast number of fans all over the world. Yuzuru has been able to lure into the world of figure skating many people who have not been interested in figure skating before. He is the brightest star of figure skating and I think we don't even fully realize how huge his impact has been and I hope will continue to be many more years from now on :happydance:

I wonder if Yuzuru even himself is aware of how meaningful his skating is...He has taken figure skating to a whole new level. It is not just technically demanding sport performances anymore but a high form of culture, a legacy that tells us something fundamental of the beauty of being a human and having emotions :heartpound:.

It is entirely up to Yuzu what he will do next and I will support him in whatever he decides upon, but my gut instinct tells me that he will want to continue skating competitively.

Ghislain, who has known and worked with him as long as Brian, feels that Yuzu is capable of competing for another four years and even at the age of 35. This is from the coach who seems to know Yuzu the best, has earned Yuzu’s trust, has continued to maintain contact with Yuzu despite the pandemic and has always made Yuzu his number one priority, keeping his best interests at heart.

If Yuzu decides to continue competing, he will not be alone in the field of superstar GOATs who have successfully continued their careers against the challenges of aging.

A recent case in point is Tom Brady who is the winningest quarterback in NFL history and widely considered the GOAT. He recently announced his retirement at the age of 44. Last week, he watched from the stands in England as Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick in an English Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. As the game finished and the 37-year-old Rinaldo completed his stunning master class on how elite athletes defy age, he met with Brady and asked him a simple question: "You're finished, right?"

But Brady's competitive embers had been rekindled. The next day, he announced his come back to football for a 23rd season just 40 days after his "retirement." Citing "unfinished business," Brady tweeted, "my place is still on the field and not in the stands."

This is from the nbcnews.com/think/opinion entitled "Tom Brady refuses to retire. How aging athletes stay superstars." In addition to Tom Brady and Cristiano Rinaldo this article also refers to Lebron James, Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

Cristiano Rinaldo and Lebron James are both 37 years old and Roger Federer and Serena Williams are both 40 years of age.

Although you cannot compare sports and Yuzu has had repeated injuries particularly to his right ankle, he is only 27 years of age and is, according to him and obvious to his fans, stronger and better than he has ever been and is continuing to improve.

PS: You have to feel for the poor person who "won" Tom Brady's "final" touchdown football in an auction for over $518,000 only to have it become one of many touchdown footballs thrown by Tom Brady when he announced his un-retirement.

Since we were talking about PR today;

Having pop idols singing you praise for free on variety shows, Yuzu is indeed a household name.

I know Shoko-tan is comedic, but the whole thing is very relatable lol

I understand that many of us want to have the focus of PR to be on his skills and whatnot, but athletes are always being talked abt in terms like these on the media, I think.

I also agree abt the age thing @Geo1 very nicely put. It will all depend on his ankle state, but this retirement push for him reeks of desperate politics.

Hmm I don't think a lot of fanyus are doing very well  but I am holding on by looking at his interviews from the past, analyzing his past programmes, and generally vibing until he is ready to be in the public's eye again.

As for wondering whether he is or isn't going to r-word, I try not to think about the future too much, especially a future I can hardly control! It just ends up generating anxieties for me. Right now, at this present time, I am imagining and hoping that Yuzu is sleeping well at night, eating well, and enjoying his daily life doing simple things like buying his favourite food (gyoza) from his favourite stall :9:

I bring up my writing from this afternoon, before I knew about Japan and now everyone is safe and that is reassuring

Ulrinis, I recognized myself in your writing : difficult month / uncertainty / expectation and this is what is called : "the millefeuille effect" which is a cake made from puff pastry and whose "leaves" can be seen interspersed with pastry cream ...... and despite everything, hope is always at the end of the tunnel and like you Yuzu is one of them (and my 2 little girls too) : YES he will come back after he has rested / healed his ankle and wait for him patiently

History of French Pastry: where does the Mille-Feuille come from?

Thank you for your nice words! When I wrote I hadn’t heard the news about the earthquake yet. Yes, how can I even complain about getting one punch after the other when I see what Yuzu is having to deal with. I hope the situation in the area is safe now. 🙏🏻

Lowkey wondering (and highkey wishing) if the ISU workgroup that is supposed to study IA for fs scoring would ever consider asking for Yuzuru's collab... I kinda of doubt, given how generally disinterested they are in his opinions about FS, also I guess that till Yuzu isn't officially retired there could be conflict of interest... but really, I doubt there's someone who could offer more first-hand knowledge than him, currently, as he would be able to offer insights both on what's needed and on how to get it.

I fully agree, plus JSF should provide funding to translate his thesis given he would agree and make it available in the first place.

As for the working group - there is almost no information on their progress. This was in plans already in May 2021, but if you do the search on their website, this is what you find:

print-screen-AI.png

I did these searches for various combinations and relevant keywords and found nothing (only the info from 2021 in their reporting doc).

I am wondering, how long it can take to complete at least the first consultation/state of art phase. What are the next steps? What is the roadmap? Who's going to be involved?

I have seen somewhere that they are also pausing it because of Covid/invasion in Ukraine (not confirmed). At the same time they are organizing big competition events, though. But cannot do the research review and a pilot study, at least? Studies on the use of AI for fs were published and experiments were conducted despite Covid, it's all there, I found some interesting studies, but will post later, as this post is already getting big, haha.

Meanwhile - again giving the example of gymnastics. They had it all properly planned already in 2017 with a clear roadmap. They are proud and loud about it, marketing it everywhere, being at the front-line of improving sports and emphasizing fair scoring all the time. See their roadmap:

Really, the ISU needs to get serious about it.

I have been a Patriots fan my entire adult life and following Brady since day one. Although he has been in the sports for more than 20 years, I can tell you that he is in a much better form than most current NFL QBs. As long as Yuzu’s ankle can hold up, I am sure he has so much more to offer, just like Brady. Can’t wait for the new season to begin.
