Well they say maths goes alongside music. Oddly the most gifted (as far as their piano teacher is concerned) of my children is, like me, a total loss at maths. The other two are technically excellent but don't have the 'touch' - no2 has a devil of a problem memorising the music but once it's in the head we're off with it, no need to stand guard to make sure practice gets done, to somewhere the others can't reach- or so their teacher says. I suspect if you are able to fuse the two that's where real talent starts.

I know, I know,- it just always seems desperately unfair on both the skaters and the fans. Watching it through the eyes of my family there is a gulf - but it's a virtual gulf not a real one. At the moment it's in ladies, as you say in the past it was in the men's competition- there are at the moment a number of girls that never make it on to the radar and the casual viewer never realises that they are even there. It is very kind of you to try and give me a more positive perspective but it hits my 'unfair' button - I'll get over it - happens all the time in gymnastics too.

I know that it's important to encourage the smaller Feds etcetcetc but I really do think that outside of the big international lovefest that is the OG most actual sports fans would rather just see the best people competing - or at least a greater percentage of them. I'm totally soppy about the JGP competitors from non skating countries like Greece and Turkey ( just an example - the uk competitors aren't great either and they have a tradition - the Greeks are reinventing the wheel) but when it comes to seniors it just seems wrong that Russian and to a lesser extent Japanese girls/ ladies should be confined to so few places.

I really feel for her - it's one of the reasons I dislike the Olympics - if it were just Worlds every year she and Han Yan and Satoko and many others would just shrug their shoulders and think ' next year in ********* city, and do whatever their medical advisors think best. Once every 4 years is a terrible pressure

I can't thank you all enough for all the numbers ( at which I am absolutely abysmal) - an unwanted side effect to putting FS on the family calendar is the sudden scrutiny of several mathematically minded people and you are saving my credibility here. No one ever cared about the gymnastics- but they seem to be gradually getting hooked into FS albeit initially as a joke on me!

Black t shirt with chrysanthemums 'Change' TBH I don't care what he skates in ex - he can do LGC in Ziguenerweisen costume and flub every jump (as long as he doesn't get injured) - just nail Fred and Onmyouji

The poor kid - the shoulder is askew but mended?? No wonder he feels nervous about falling. And he has asthma of the kind one of my family has - triggered by cold air. Hope he performs in a way that makes him happy.

I think it was Kurt Browning who made the excellent point that the times of practices and competitions, plus the team competition makes the Olympics a very different beast from normal competitions- it's not surprising that there are less than perfect performances. The whole thing is geared to the IOC TV contracts rather than the convenience of the competitors. When the 2012 Olympics were in the UK there was a big fuss over the sailing and windsurfing- the organisers wanted it where it was easiest to make money and funnel in spectators, the competitors lobbied for the best place to actually perform their sports, and on that occasion they won.

I don't know why but I have the impression that Shoma leaves all that to his team and doesn't really want to get involved in those choices? There was an interview with Keiji Tanaka in which he said he preferred to leave the music to his coach as he didn't want to pick something he really liked only to find he got sick of it by the end of the season- I get the impression that Shoma does the same though not necessarily for the same reason.

Somewhere there is a vid of Mrs Hanyu glueing crystals to the Ziguenerweisen costume and talking to Johnny Weir who designed it. Superglue I should think.

I am going to have to put some friends up overnight on 9.12.17. which is potentially going to interfere with me seeing the GPF - are the times of the various parts of the competition likely to be similar to NHK, in which case I'll probably be ok or will the JGPF being at the same venue alter things?

I take no particular pleasure in doing a lot better than I expected to in SC - did what no. 2 son does with his fantasy football - when he picks them it's the kiss of death - loss of form/ injury etc. We are alike in many ways but i obviously don't have the evil eye. -

Best not to look at Besp any more unless you have to- I had to last night because I was late home and didn't have time to sort out anything else. Even if you have no commentary or one you can't understand it won't be as annoying as listening to those idiots.

Maybe it needs its own thread as well as popping up in the general one - sort of an archive ? Easy to find on a meh sort of day when you need cheering up?
