  1. I somehow can't help feeling that this will prove disastrous. Pairs is by far the most dangerous discipline and we've already seen that safety is not Eteri's first priority with the way she drives her skaters....
  2. helmet. I don't know what the requirements will be at your local ice rink, but here in Canada, helmets are now required during child figure skating lessons to protect against concussion should the child take a fall. No idea about whether boys need special support when starting out. I would think not. As for the little girl, in my experience most figure skating clubs have some kind of recommended dress code, but take a look at the practice videos of Ladies' singles. Lots of them wearing dark leggings, or lightweight shorts over their tights, so it shouldn't be an issue for your niece to be more covered up. Beginner skaters will rarely be in the kinds of positions that challenge modesty anyways.
  3. Never thought I'd see the day. Maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket, just in case all the laws of probability are suddenly failing.
  4. H&E --> History & Entertainment. I'm getting it mixed up with the A&E TV channel Ten To Chi To is much better, although my anime-loving self keeps wanting to shorten it to Tenchi after Tenchi Muyo.
  5. Roman's recap of WTT. It actually sounds like there was a lot of effort put into keeping the skaters and the event safe.
  6. Same! the parade was the very first time I joined a livestream for Yuzu specifically, instead of watching something like the Olympics.
  7. So, am I the only one who is wondering if Yuzu feels he has unfinished business with LGC? As I recall, he never did go clean in competition with it. Maybe he's thinking he'll get that settled this time?
  8. The Toronto Star's take. I think it's safe to say they don't approve: https://twitter.com/StarSports/status/1385020636117012481?s=20 Edited to add: I didn't realize the article was paywalled, sorry!
  9. I feel like there should be a new one with the title ' blurry fancams of Yuzu taken with potato cellphones at competitions' --> I'd so win.
  10. Eesh. Beyond the obvious of Eric being clueless , I really wonder who the hell is running the CBC Olympics twitter, that they thought this was the right way to go about reporting the story. Smacks of Jerry Springer-style infotainment.
  11. I think she's trying really hard not to sound that way but this obviously is a painful disappointment for her. I keep thinking of Charlie Bilodeau who dumped two partners in a row without any warning and left them high and dry...and the whole John Coughlin thing...and of course Vanessa's former partner...and a myriad of other stories and rumours I've heard over the years, from all countries, and , well, it really seems like pairs guys are just a toxic breed of human, like, what gives?
  12. Agreed! What the actual heck. Of course we have to see how the season goes, but I feel like the team that will lose out the most will be Trennt and Evelyn. They're the ones most likely to be bumped from their Olympic spot if Eric and Vanessa can qualify. Ugh, just when you think it's only RusFed who can bring the drama... Full video straight from the horse's mouth: In other news, Keegan and Lane posted wholesome photos of them painting their baby's nursery with a mountain motif on his Instagram. Could we please have more skaters like Keegan?
  13. and if that proves to be true (I suspect it will), then at least they won't have any excuses to hide behind.
  14. Well, the true caveat here is that while Yuzu has proven that it's feasible, taking motion capture and AI-type technology from a research environment and making it into a robust and easy-to-use system that can be deployed at competitions around the globe by the average end user (that is to say, any Luddite fossil) for a reasonable cost and upload results in real time, is a whole other ball game. It will probably happen but I expect it to take at least ten years, maybe more. Precisely my point - in figure skating, it is a 'mind blown' moment. Consider how many actual figure skaters competing today obediently parrot the party line of 'you can't be objective in figure skating". Consider how hide-bound and resistant to change the sport is. To play devil's advocate for a moment though, using motion-capture technology to judge technical elements might just encourage the ISU to go even further down the road of having a 'technical' program and an 'artistic' one instead of SP and FS. If they decided to adapt technology-based judging at all, the so-called 'technical' program is where I'd expect to see it come up.
  15. *cough*RusFed*cough* Granted, it would still only be TES scores that would become more fair. PCS would still be abused wantonly for the sake of national bias.
  16. I just don't think the significance of what he's saying here will be understood well. Think about it: Yuzu has just proven the most fundamental assumption in figure skating - namely that it's not possible to judge it objectively - to be flat-out wrong. If you can use motion-capture to see if a jump is according to the rules, then you can use it for spins, for steps, for anything. You can use it to automate tech scoring so that bias (in TES at least) can never be a thing in this sport ever again. That's earth-shaking stuff to think about. But I doubt most sportswriters will figure that out, western media or not western. And the main, non-sports media won't care.
  17. Why am I visualizing something like this now: As fun as that would be, could you imagine how many cranky-pants 'real figure skating fans' would get their knickers in a twist over it? The fuss over Pooh rain would be nothing in comparison. But you know, if Yuzu ever decided to really use his stardom and stage a rock-concert-style skating extravanganza at Tokyo Dome, I'll be there with every lightstick I can buy, all to wave for him.
  18. The lights work for his soft programs like HWS and HYK, but it's a bit difficult to hold up the torchlight while you're screaming along to something like LMEY or PW...
  19. As it's a student thesis, the most likely place to get it is from Waseda itself. Usually university libraries keep a copy of every successful thesis by the university's students. That's my guess anyway.
  20. At the very very bottom of the page, you'll see the Twitter bird and underneath that, 2 dropdown menus and a link: Language, Theme, and Contact Us. Click the drop down for 'Theme" and it should show you a list of all the banners. Select the one you want and you should be good to go. It changed automatically for me once I selected it from the menu. The new Heaven and Earth banner is truly spectacular, by the way! Congrats to those who made it.
  21. While I was reading that part of the interview, I kept on thinking about his thesis and the motion capture idea...I wonder if it has occurred to Yuzu to try using motion capture technology to analyze his 4A attempts? Also, with the right set of coding skills, someone could probably create a computer model of an 'ideal' 4A and Yuzu could use that as his guideline for image training.
  22. Yes, Yuzu went second last and brought the house down with PW. Then, even though Yuzu is the toughest act to follow, Piper and Paul were still able to keep everyone glued to their seats and spellbound with Starry Night. It was a huge testament to their talent as performers, honestly. Anyway, about the skaters having a show off session after galas and ice shows: I have no idea how it got started but it's a pretty established tradition now. It depends on whether organizers are willing to allow skaters the time for it or not, though. Some places turn on the lights pretty quick to get everyone off the ice sooner. And as far as I can tell there's no real 'pecking order' to it, it's just whoever wants to show off. I think the other skaters encourage Yuzu and egg him on to do spectacular things a lot, though. They all seem to delight in watching him.
