One thing to remember is that many of the skaters cannot afford to miss a chance at a medal and the money attached, or - for the Russian ladies especially - anything that might lose them the slightest edge in the federation's eyes. Yuzuru has earned the right to put himself, his team and his fans ahead of other considerations, even ahead of what the JSF may want (and since his statement came through them, even if they didn't like it it appears they accept it), and he doesn't need the money or the medals. I wouldn't be surprised if Alina ends up bowing out too, especially if the warmer weather starts the covid figures rising again. She doesn't need to take the risk, any more than he does.

Given the recent news that Usain Bolt - along with several of the sports star guests at his birthday party - have tested positive... Good for Yuzu.

Yuzu's appearances this year have mostly been to try and encourage people to act safe, take precautions and slow down the spread. He is practicing what he preaches, whatever the cost. We know he wants to compete more - only a few days ago he mentioned the blessed 4A again - but I think he's giving notice to the ISU that he is not risking his, Brian's and his fan's health to do so, no matter how much they may want him to fill the coffers.

This is the second time - though in a different way - that Yuzu has watched nature's dark side and what it does to his country (and others, this time). I think it does make his words have more weight than many people who simply have never experienced that helplessness.

Sorry I appear to be spamming this thread, but these pictures keep turning up due to a couple of people I follow on twitter, and this one....

When a student submits their proposed research topic right at the start, they (and if they've already talked it through with the Faculty, someone there like the proposed supervisor) usually also come up with the list of the resources needed and from my time working at university, this is considered before their proposal is accepted. I can't see Waseda approving such a resource-heavy proposal unless they had/were arranging what was necessary or Yuzuru made it clear he was covering that part of the cost. When you think of his earnings the last few years, he can more than afford it, and probably has plans for anything he bought post-graduation. Waseda is a wealthy institution, though, so they could also afford it as long as they were able to justify it for staff or other students. Remember, Yuzuru Hanyu is very much a prized student to them, they make that very clear.

Neither Yuzu nor Waseda are short of a quid Plus given his celebrity status in Japan, a deal could have been made for the pr. I told you people would start translating pretty much immediately.

If Yuzu is part of this - whether in person or online - it will have the largest international audience of any graduation Waseda has ever known...

He must have known that the minute he showed video of those pages, fans would be busily trying to translate them...
