I think for individual flags they can probably put big strong stickers and take care of it themselves! For the big banner, the metal pins gonna be heavy tho, esp if there are a lot of them, and if the banner is large they can only be pinned if laid flat on the ground since ppl need to traverse both sides to put the lock into the pin. How about plastic button badges? Those should be easier. Maybe a heart with black background? Or a simple red badge. (click on image for link) The size of the badge will prob depend on the size of the banner Thanks yuzuangel for the PH twitter post too! It's very well worded and considerate I would never have been able to write that haha I guess for the big map we can either (1) have a super big banner with both printed online satellite countries + attendee badges, or (2) have a printed satellite world map based on PH / other online statistics and regional banners for pinning badges? Would the badges be removed after every competition? If the countries don't have the usernames attached to them it should be fine tbh. Maybe this can be the opportunity for the latest up to date demographic survey with the pinned map too ^^

Sounds lovely! The individual handheld banners is definitely a plus, shows where they are from without the political baggage. Will the wording be the same? The map pin is a great idea too ^^ Perhaps can also state that if they have difficulty navigating the map pins, they can add the city to the form? Thanks everyone for the discussion too! here's something basic I've come up with, just from the form entries 1. If we want the attendees to stick a heart on the site, the banner gotta be LARGE, Europe is already full haha. Also we must ensure the quality of the sticker such that it won't fall off / crumple when the banner is folded? 2. Should we also have regional banners? Like Asia / NA / SA / Europe / Oceania? Since individual flags are already small and the Europe is so tiny that one "Love" image would cover up the entire continent lol, and for the big banner there might not be enough space to stick everyone's stickers haha, depending on the size. Then maybe add the words "We love Yuzu" at the blank spaces that is the ocean or on top and bottom. Although probably it doesn't matter. some additional suggestions

😂 I see. Yea I do know content creators and artists who get very offended if their work is used before explicit permission is given, even when they are credited. I guess there's no harm for shanshani to ask again on the premise of "collaboration". If they say yes, a lot of work can be saved, if not, nothing changes lol

tbh why doesn't ISU do the statistical analysis already, bit outrageous that fans have to do this for them. I don't think there's any other sports that the management takes such a hands-off approach, even rhythmic gymnastic is starting to get computer intelligence to help score more accurately already I think. Also I really like your crowdsourced technical camera project idea! You might want to consider sharing to twitter, tumblr or Facebook for more exposure Was it because the data was parsed without their knowledge / credit? If so, maybe things will be different if we ask them first and phrase it as a "collaboration" between us and them with proper credits. If not, oh well

Try this website? http://skatingscores.com They have a lot of entries You can contact the person on twitter too, they'll probably be happy to share their data https://twitter.com/SkatingScores

now I think about it, the words "China loves Yuzu" may have some historical baggage and be seen as over-representing... I think China does love Yuzu (there's even a dedicated bilibili channel aimed at archiving every single CCTV video about Yuzu, and I have to say they praise him a lot!) but I could see the fans being attacked on Weibo if they were seen waving these flags, especially if Boyang is also competing... I'm not sure how they'll receive it haha, maybe they won't mind, maybe they'll choose not to wave the flags idk, probably won't be a problem for other countries. My initial message "Love from xxx" was aimed to reduce these scenarios but in the end I think "xxx loves Yuzu" is a good balance I think if we can't hit the 200 quota, having satellites carrying banners on behalf of other countries will also be a good idea! I'm sure a lot of us would love to be represented but can't go to the venue. Only if we get explicit requests in the form though. Perhaps we can have a google form stating whether you'll be getting the flags yourself (+contact details on telegram / WhatsApp) or if you'd like your country being represented as well. I'm from Malaysia/Singapore and I'd love to have these tropical countries represented too. Even though figure skating is not a big thing here, love for Yuzu is truly international

as of now the only long name that doesn't seem to have a short form that I could think of is Philippines, but imo 2 lines wouldn't look that bad for it since there's a lot of space
-
For the "frequency" of country flags, I think it's not going to reflect the Planet Hanyu country distribution, because certainly there will be much much more European fans at GPF Turin compared to say Worlds at Montreal? Like Asia has a big chunk of the PH population, but due to the competition location being in NA / EU we're probably unlikely to show up in that amount, unless there's going to be distribution at NHK too
-
Yea black helps to focus the flag better maybe. This is beautiful Why didn't I think about Swiss as short form for Switzerland ;'D
-
We might be able to hit the quota since the banners are timeless, we don't really have to finish distributing by the next event or such. For the breakdown, maybe we can prioritise those who put their names down on the excel sheet first? And request help from twitter / tumblr / Facebook users to gauge interest from their followers / groups. I believe we already have 20 entries from PH? I think it's very hard to gauge the breakdown unless the attendees have an inkling of the composition of those who'd want the flag at the venues. The best bet is probably prioritise the excel entries

yea i think ultimately whichever design we go with, it should be visible and clear from afar. I can see why everyone likes the original design, but if you zoom out a lot (see photo below) I think the "WE YUZU" stood out to me rather than the with the flag on it, and it kind of misses the point because 1. whoever views it from afar won't find it memorable because they have to squint to see the flag, and 2. they cannot recognise half the flags, which again makes it difficult to remember and defeats the purpose. Like, I couldn't even see the yellow stars on the China flag from far away, especially if the flag is going to be a primary info carrier For example I didn't recognise the Philippines, Belgium and the Romanian flag, and I'm sure there's a lot of others who can't recognise even more flags. Few is going to remember "oh there's this Yuzu fan holding this banner with a non-Japanese flag that I had to squint to see and can't recognise, and I don't bother to google search "flag with white triangle, blue and red stripes" to find it". It's precisely the same reason why "YUZU IS LOVED FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD" didn't drive home the point, because the phrase is vague when there were no concrete memorable example of where exactly he is loved that is beyond their expectations. vs "oh Yuzu has fans from Philippines / Belgium / Romania / Taiwan / Vietnam / Hong Kong / Peru??" which is 1000x more memorable, and drives home the point that Yuzu has fans from countries that they didn't think he would have fans, and who would fly in just to watch him at competitions. Here the flag is just the illustration rather than the primary info carrier, without which the message would be just "WE YUZU" over and over again. The idea is to spell it out as clearly to them as possible. That's the rationale for having the country name - it's unambiguous, clear cut, easy to read and makes it fun for journalists to read out different country names. to mimic the dark conditions here's some samples I've made. the original brightness can be found here. Personally I'd go with the 2nd row, but I'm not attending competitions so I guess just go with whatever you like.

Join the "We Yuzu from ______" banner discussion here! some other random tests I've made

I guess one way we can test it is to zoom it very far out and see how they look (i haven't changed the top 2 yet) eh now that I look at this black block letters could work, especially if the heart has the flag. Just make the heart outglow thicker I guess, the original seem a bit thin. I use 50-100px for my psd.
-
yep yuzuangel will do that! I need to wake up early for school tomorrow and I haven't figured out the heart yet haha I'll check back in 12 hours T>T yea long names seem problematic, I thought of using short forms for those country names but I guess it depends, or we can make the outglow thinner for long names. One possible concern is that if the country name is in black blocks, then from far away we'll see a sea of black letters like what I observed with the original design. I did find that the flags make it look more colourful and make the country name stand out from the WE Yuzu message above, so it's catchier from far away.

here's my psd files if you need them https://mega.nz/#!nz4GlYTa!ybBUZVvOvkDlr5-I8FMlMFujO0RHy0GONzcBgxOxP9Q

here you go! test runs nice banners you got there btw
-
Ok idk how to do the heart thing but this is exactly what i was thinking about haha something something adjust proportions it's late and i need to sleep D: idm doing anything just let me know how I can help do you know how to add the flag to the font?
-
At any rate I'm not going to any competition anyway, so maybe we can just put up several designs and let the ppl choose what they want

Sigh the issue is not about criticism.... I know that it'll happen no matter what. We can be completely unapologetic about worshipping Yuzu like a god, but will our action to "prove that Yuzu's fans are not only Japanese" backfire on us instead, to the extent it might've been better if we never had this in the first place? Are there better ways to bring about this? That's my concern.
-
should we add a silhouette then? Idk where to put the Yuzu without the entire message looking weird
-
yea which I think that the flag itself would suffice, I guess this is where the disagreement lies. I mean I still remember that photo where someone showed up in hijab and excitedly waited for Yuzu's high five by the rink side, during a victory lap. She didn't need to paste "I LOVE YUZU" on her forehead or wear a full winnie the pooh costume, but her clothing clearly communicated that she is not a Japanese, and her excitement communicated that she loves Yuzu. What I was thinking is that the effect of the flag would mimic the effect her clothing has on communicating to the audience about her identity as a non-Japanese, in a far more natural and less "off-putting" way to 3rd parties who have little idea of the issue, which is who we're targeting in the first place. I'm just trying to think about how our "target audience" will respond and whether it'll have unintended effects. Something arguably we don't need more misunderstanding of, like how the journalists criticised the girl who dressed up in Yuzu's costume and interpreted all her actions as "over the top" and "wanting Nathan to lose" just because of that. Our actions could come off as "Yuzu fans trying to show off that he has support but no other skaters have", which is a natural reaction considering that most of those journalists who made the over-generalising comments will probably have their own favourites.
-
Yea I was thinking that Yuzu would've preferred it if we respect figure skating as a whole, compared to the original Yuzu-centric reasoning that seem to be based on the premise that "Yuzu is good, and people don't recognise it, so we have to prove it" , which I don't think he himself will appreciate, since this kind of attention seem like idol worshipping more than anything else.
-
While I understand that the initial goal was to "prove that Yuzu not only has fans in Japan", from a 3rd person's perspective this does seem a little fanatical, and I'm sure Yuzu would prefer it if we are seen as figure skating fans rather than worshipping him like an idol I was thinking from a completely ignorant foreigner journalist's point of view and what effect would our actions have on them, since they are our initial target "audience" anyway Should the idea be "Yuzu fans are trying to show that Yuzu is loved from a lot of countries", which the stark contrast & absence in other skaters' will make it seem like "Why tf can't these fans make a similar banner for other skaters too? They deserve it"? Or "figure skating fans are trying to show that the Japanese superstar is not just loved in Japan but all around the world"? For sure we cannot pre-empt all the anti arguments, but this is just something I thought Yuzu would appreciate as well - knowing that our attention and respect is not just for him, but for everyone. For me I think that the 2nd premise is a healthier one.
-
yea I thought about that, just that I'd imagine if people wave these flags when Yuzu is skating then it's clear that these are for him? Also I thought that this might help dispel the idea that "Yuzu fans only care about Yuzu" stereotype by showing that Yuzu supporters also support everyone, though it's a bonus at this stage.
-
Should we open a mini design contest haha Anyways my initial concern with the original design is that from far away, the first thing that I notice was a repetition of "WE YUZU", which didn't make much sense to me until I noticed the flags, and took me about 20 seconds to connect the dots. Also I regret to say that I didn't recognise some of the flags rip. I guess it depends on how hard we want to drive home the point that we are from different countries. If our goal is to attract the media's attention then we might need to reduce the "connect the dot" time cuz I can imagine them completely ignoring it when they don't get what's going on. I've simplified my design down to this, perhaps with this design Yuzu fans can reuse the flags for other skaters as well? I mean we don't have to be a charity for other skater's fans, but this seem like something we can use for all competitions. For interest, I guess we can open a "pre-order" form for distribution to twitter etc, basically among known Yuzu fans who have followers and they do go to competitions themselves? Just to gauge the interest
