  1. Haha. Did they fire the first writer and actually hired a professional for the second one? What did they attribute the falls that Hanyu suffered that, for lack of a better term, "allowed" Fernandez to win in 2015 and 2016? Early testing of shamanism that backfired? By their logic, I wonder what kind of tribute do they think Orser had neglected to pay to be jinxed out of gold not once, but twice? And what kind of insane blood sacrifice did he have to make to see his dream realized decades later twice over consecutively through the same student? Thanks for the effort. You're good at this. :))
  2. Guy gives his much-ridiculed fans a lot to be proud about. I saw quite a bit of mean-spirited wishes from non-fans hoping he'd fall or lose not because they had anything against him (not exactly) but they wanted it to happen simply out of spite for his fans whom they felt were obnoxious (which admittedly some of us can be a little but no reason to wish ill on an innocent and hardworking athlete cos of that). Now that he's gone and done us proud instead, and we've pretty much gotten the last laugh (which is funny cos I remember seeing more crying than laughing), I don't see fans spiting right back (in the same media I saw the spite being directed at us anyway...dunno about other more cesspooly parts of the interwebz), something I feel the guy himself can be proud about. If I'd been hesitant to label myself a Fanyu before, I'm not anymore. ^^ OH YEAH! It's getting likelier and likelier that he'll have one plaque with two years on it since Fernandez's one would mean there'd be only one more spot left on the board (before they start a new one). Good thing Hanyu won one of the same color, then. It makes things so much more convenient. XD
  3. Neat! I wasn't banking on someone to do this at all! D'yall know what this means? It means The Dude will be the first repeat Oly medallist that stuck around. And a gold one at that. TCC's got plenty to be proud of. ^^
  4. Or well, it could be special since it's for Olympic medallists. I think the WC one only shows the champions...? Or at least I only seem to remember Hanyu and Fernandez's golds being mentioned on there. I forgot what color medals the other names were...and I don't remember the other names on the Oly one either, so I cant recall if any if them were repeat medallists...
  5. Is that an edit? Cos I'm thinking they might just make a new plaque that puts the years together, like they do with the WC version what with the real estate on that board being limited and all. >_<
  6. Yep, that was me. And I did check out the transcript. I've edited my original post with my thoughts after reading it. I still don't quite get why he made the leap to it but I guess it's mainly cos I never actually got to see the full breadth of these mocking fan coverage you mentioned. I could only link it to what I do know which is fanvids. And I never doubted it. With your revelation, though, I think I can now sort of see why he said that, if they also cover those who don't get to see him live in comp (which I suppose now makes more sense than fanvids) and he was doing his part to defend his fans. Most of all, I can now watch fanvids again. I've never been more glad to be wrong, lol. Thank you! (I'm now mighty curious about these shows that offer up inaccurate representation of his fans though...I think if I saw one or two, I'll finally really get what he's trying to convey back there.)
  7. Thanks! Any idea if there's a full vid floating around somewhere? Oh and I just realized Shimizu actually meant 20 secs before the cameras were due to roll for something he and Hanyu were on together so it was his shoelaces he readjusted, not his bootlaces. Original post edited accordingly. Sorry.
  8. Oooh. Any idea where I can see the vid itself? The tweet quoted Shimizu as saying Hanyu found 20 seconds before he's due to be on air to be plenty of time and used them to retie his shoelaces, displaying his absolute control of (internal) timing. So...where can I see this video? If there's anyone who knows or can find out, it's gotta be you, @kaerythsama-SAMA.
  9. The gentleman who got to ask the last question asked him if he ever wished that all the Pooh and flowers that get tossed at him were money instead. He used the two winners of the recent Tokyo Marathon who were awarded ¥100,000,000 for their effort. (Note: by comparison, Hanyu himself is only getting awarded ¥5,000,000 for his second Olympic gold) He answered that fans spend a lot, like A LOT, to attend competitions and then he went on to say that he watches fanvids, noting that some of the song choices for some were pretty wild, and it struck him that there's a whole world of fans out there whose voices don't directly reach him because most won't be able to afford or be in the kind of circumstances that would enable them to attend figure skating competitions (other priorities, can't get tickets, etc.) so he wants to take these fans into full account as well when considering those who appreciate what he does, and when he performs, he wants to do it in a way that reaches even fans who aren't physically in the venue cheering him on. So considering all the money fans spent on tickets and gifts, to him it's as good as tossing cold hard cash at him and so long as he's contributing to the economy, he's happy. Out of all that, the only thing I chose to take away was the part where he said he watches fanvids because shallow fan is shallow. There are a few fanvids that I enjoy watching and can no longer enjoy without imagining his smirking face now so thanks a lot for the reveal, Hanyu.
  10. Hi there, @banbourg. Yeah I intend to reupload them at some point after I've made a couple of edits (e.g.: the american doctor who saw to him immediately after the CoC crash was apparently a lady, not a man, but I didn't know that before and used the male pronoun instead, plus a couple of other bits here and there I feel could be better). If you send me a PM, I'll make sure to update you when they are available (cos it's easier to remember who to update this way). 03/04/18: All episodes have been reedited and links are now refreshed. If anyone finds them down again, please me me know. Thank you!
  11. Lol. Why? I think the act of debating itself is a pretty healthy one. I don't think anything untoward is happening here at all. But I do understand that some may be uncomfortable about it. And since I said I'll be signing of on the issue here, I'll keep my word. Any responses I may feel compelled to make about this topic I will do so privately from here on out. So...we can all get back to the regularly scheduled program. Sorry for the interruption.
  12. It's not an issue of translation but more one of perception. And I think someone on tumblr has it translated already so you could probably ask it from them?
  13. If I did, that would mean your clarification wasn't very clear at all. But I think we're on the same page now so let's move on. Nope. She didn't miss out anything major. Hanyu said more or less exactly that. But based on the way Hanyu chooses his words in all the interviews I've ever seen of him, he has never been political in his views, or expressed them as such, this much I'm certain of. Figure skating programs are based on culture, which in itself is intertwined with race, or rather, ethnicity. This is the part where I more or less agree with @kaerb . But that's where it stops. Race and culture branch off at some point and figure skating programs cover a part of culture that doesnt necessarily touch upon the race issue in a solid way. Ethnicity, yes. Race, no. I feel by choosing to see this as a racial issue over a cultural one, we are politicizing what he said, which, based on what I gather of who he is, isn't what he wants or meant to do. But if that's what you all want to do, I really can't stop you. Just know that you'd be doing it in his name. And I'd rather not be a part of it more than I already am so I'll be signing off on this issue now.
  14. It happened because you...sigh...never mind. I just needed to make it clear that he didn't mean what he said racially. And that your idea of the lines being blurred between the two concepts do have a clear border somewhere. So yes, it'd be great if you could make the edit. Thanks for understanding. I hope the translators will do a good job delivering this part especially because it can be so easily misconstrued. Wait, the interpreter lady already did good. Are the translators doing this as well? I thought it wouldn't be necessary since the lady already did a stellar job. If they are, though, maybe they could make this part even clearer. Though I thought what the lady translated was plenty clear enough...but apparently not, lol.
  15. Okay, I get what you're trying to say and don't completely disagree but hear me out. The racial issue also covers a more sensitive area which Hanyu didn't touch upon, like at all. So big difference. I think this is partially what he meant when he was griping about the media misinterpreting him, lol. So lets be careful and try to make proper distinctions where they are due, shall we? Cos things like this have a tendency to escalate. Fast. And I'm guessing we'll have to agree to disagree on the interpreter issue. If she translated every little joke and irrelevant ditty the mod let loose, she could've done the same for Hanyu. And I heard what she said. I wasn't quoting her verbatim. I was quoting her based on my interpretation of her nuance and body language. Clearly we have different views on this so.let's end this here. The racial issue though, I really do hope you agree and understand
  16. Uh oh. Guys, Hanyu didn't start a racial debate. He only touched upon a cultural one. If we're going to discuss racial bias, I think we should leave Hanyu's name out of it, and this probably isnt the best place to do it either.
  17. If he knows people are making MADs of him and are watching enough of them himself to go "HMmmmMmM...?" at some of the music choices (I'm guessing his curiosity overrode his embarrassment), he knows of Ambesi's fervent admiration of him. Ambesi isn't exactly an unknown in the field. And even if he is, Hanyu would still know because the guy knows everything. His intel-gathering technique is quite possibly the only thing that's more excellent than his skating one. If he ever decides to turn to the dark side, the world is toast. I actually think the whole trying pressure him into going thing is more due to the fact that they don't want him to retire now that he's achieved his life's biggest goal, lol. Because the loss in potential revenue would be too great. And yeah, this means he's being viewed as a cash cow but aren't most successful people? >_< But there are also those who sincerely want him to stay because they just can't get enough of him and at this point, can't yet imagine an Oly that's without a healthy dose of the Hanyu magic sprinkled upon it. Wow. You've got a good eye. All I see are a bunch of orange red blobs..or a giant one since I can't really see where one ends and another one begins. ...I read this wrong the first time around and had to do a double take. I think @kaerb might've meant cultural bias instead, because that's what Hanyu meant when he spoke about his Oly FS program being a quinessentially ethnic one. I also feel there's been quite a number of misinterpretation/misquoting of his words during the Olys. Like the one where he was quoted by non-Japanese media as saying "I'm mentally strong and powerful" when he was really saying the opposite (if memory serves) and the one where he said "I'm back" but was quoted instead by the Japanese media as saying, "Come back." Like, the one time he gets it right, they quote him wrong and make him seem incompetent in the English language. Lol.
  18. I actually think he's serious about it. The 4A anyway. The quint seems more like an idea he's toying around with at this point. I say this because he does this thing where he puts his goals and aspirations out there so they become something almost tangible or concrete he can work towards. Like since it's already out there, he leaves himself no choice but to work towards it. Coupled with the fact he's still nursing an injury, even with no guarantees that it isn't going to be a career-ending one, I think he wants something positive out there so he can remain in a positive mental state (i.e. frame of mind) which would hopefully help with the healing process, instead of wallowing in misery and uncertainty (given the latter is already a reality anyway no matter what). Correct me if I'm wrong, but his trolling is usually more in the manner of saying that he wouldn't do something when he's actually already doing it. In that, he's proven to be a fibber. But I don't recall it ever being the opposite. So far everything he's said he'd do, he's done. Or almost died trying.
  19. Ah. That makes a lot of sense. It's hard to disagree with your point here. I suppose if I were a journalist with much better questions to ask but didn't get selected while seeing all those who did waste their precious opportunity like this, I'd probably be super vexed. But let's face it. Press conferences, especially ones after major tournaments like the Olys, aren't exactly the kind of environment where thoughtful and quality questions like the ones you mentioned can be heard. It's too wide open for that, what with all the newly generated interest. If anything, it's a breeding ground for novice questions. If you look at it from that angle, the questions he got asked could've been a lot worse. I think for the level of interest, the questions being asked are more on the acceptable end of the spectrum. Oh! Was that what he was trying to say? I must admit, it went completely over my head, cos it took him so long to come out with it and when he did, I was much too concentrated on the words he was painstakingly trying to utter that I completely missed the entire point of it. ^^; When the moderator asked her (the interpreter) if she wanted to translate, she was more like, "Nah, I'll pass," which seemed pretty dismissive to me. If she thought he was going to do it himself, she would've checked with him, I think. She seemed too professional not to. Anyway, I don't have any real problem with it. I only felt sorry for Hanyu, lol. But there was also the part of me that was like, well if that makes you feel that kuyashii and embarrassed, Mr. B2B Oly Champ, better go brush up your English like you keep saying you would, then. >_<
  20. Hiya. Can anyone point me to the recent video where they had Wagner and Fernandez talking about Hanyu? A thousand times thank you!
  21. Yeah, the translators have really upped their output and pulling through even for long interview vids so I can't wait for everyone to see this one. To be fair, there were a couple of decent questions, one of them even food related, in the FJCC (just realized I messed up the order the first time around xD) presscon. I like the one where the older gentleman questioned him about his diet management and the one that asked him for his take on the new rules and artistry vs technical argument. The one that asked him to put into layman's terms how difficult jumps are in figure skating (tough question #1) was actually a very interesting one as well, albeit a bit of a tall order since coming up with easy analogies on the fly, unless you have a flair for it, isn' the easiest thing to do. But the journalist wanted to help put into perspective to casual viewers just how tough it is and I can respect that. And the moderator gave some very deep input as well, despite not knowing much about what Hanyu does. Like the guy seemed to be a casual viewer who was genuinely moved by both his performances and his achievements and perhaps bothered to do some very quick research. That and he actually seemed pretty shook being there seating next to Hanyu and talking to him, most clearly evidenced by some uncharacteristic linguistic slip-ups, despite being a native speaker of English. >_< The interpreter was also super top notch. I kinda had to feel for Hanyu though when she declined to translate his intro into Japanese. The guy worked so hard and she just swept it all under the rug, and right at the beginning, too, hahaha. His face literally went like, "Omg...she didn't get me. After all the effort I put in, I still suck (ಥ_ಥ)" xxD Not that I can blame her, seeing as I don't really get what he meant by the living and dying part either but it would have been kinder for her to clarify and then do him the courtesy of translating it to the Japanese journalists. Hope this gives him enough kuyashii to fuel his motivation in bettering his English. He's been talking about wanting to improve it forever now and while not dismal, he seems to be stuck in a neither here nor there command level for some time now. The quality of the questions in JPC presscon was markedly higher overall but there were a lot of semi-repetitive questions as well. The ones that kept recurring were always asking about his motivations in some form or another. And I give him mad props for finding the different nuances in each and addressing them all differently and, even at the risk of being harshly criticized by those who make a living out of finding fault (sometimes even when there's really none to be found) in his honesty (he kinda also put it out there that he's fully expecting this to happen since the media has time and time again lived down to his expectations), gave us great insight into his mind palace world. Oh, and the moderator for this one, while more well-versed in what Hanyu does, also seemed shook to be there in the same room, although in a demeanor that's different from the FJCC one. I guess slaying uncles everywhere is just part of the job for one Yuzuru Hanyu. xD
  22. You'll love it when you finally get to see it, I think. That one was even more wonderful and revealing than the JFFC one. He was both brutally honest and thoughtful in it, as he spoke more freely cos he didn't have an interpreter he felt he needed to worry about.
  23. The moderator dude in the Japanese Press Club conference thingy asked him directly about it... I mean, if I didn't hear wrong or am not misremembering, the guy made a reference to the gift when someone asked him about Beijing 2022.
