If anyone is interested, yesterday on my blog I published a post in Italian and English about Yuzu's wedding:

Intorno a un matrimonio/Around a wedding | sportlandia (wpcomstaging.com)

Thank you for sharing. A wonderful piece - how I wish all his fans could read it. Some passages I particularly liked -

"Although I call him Yuzu and he is as important to me as a son, or a friend, or a sensei, depending on the context, I have no right to him. He is not my puppet, who must act to make me happy. "

"For years his skating, the most extraordinary skating ever seen, no longer coincides with the skating that was awarded with high marks by the judges. And, seeing this discrepancy, he has always done what he thought was right and not what he thought can give him better scores. There is no one who knows figure skating as well as he does, and he chose to move forward without compromise. "

Thank you. I always feel that something is missing, that I would like to say more, and words escape me. I am glad to see that I can convey at least part of what I feel.

You may wish to write a follow up article when the mood takes you or you feel able to express more. That would be great

I replied to you on twt/ X / tXt yesterday and understand the sentiments very much. Like you it does feel as if fans are only able to 'borrow' Yuzu for a short time, when he chooses to appear or give fans a snippet of news. Yuzu has every right to privacy and the little that is shown for public view, is given as a precious gift. None of us fans have any right to place obligations on Yuzu to share his whole world with us, same for his loved ones.

Apologies to anyone who feels differently. Naturally, everyone is entitled to their own views on the matter

If you don't use a different name, I don't think I saw your comment, but when I receive so many replies I often miss some.
I don't think I will write more about his marriage, but I will definitely write more about Yuzu. Not just score analysis, I do those because I'm furious with the ISU, but what I really enjoy is commenting on the amazing things he does, so I'll post more text sooner or later.

And as much as Yuzu has his own life, there is always room for us. We don't know when there will be a new project, but soon we will have the two episodes of Gen Hoshino's show, and we also just had the mini interview for the book illustrated by CLAMP. One way or another, Yuzu is always with us.

Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts in this article.

One part stands out for me:

”When, in Notte stellata, he said he wanted to sacrifice his happiness for skating, and for the mission he has taken on his shoulders to be close to those who suffer, I said ‘No’. It’s OK to be close, to help as much as you can, but not to cancel yourself out for others. I am happy that he changed his mind and chose to share his life with a person he loves and who loves him.”

I’ve seen many comments from fans about his sudden marriage news, not that I looked for them, but they were all over many sns platforms. The way he presented himself as someone who sacrificed everything and anything for his skates had imprinted in the minds of many of his followers for many years. He showed them his hard work, dedication, passion, clear purpose, determination, and even injuries to achieve his dreams. He set a clear vision, worked tirelessly towards it, and that inspired others to do the same.  They knew the road to success wasn’t easy and everyone rooted and cheered for him. They were all extremely happy when he received good results.

Being a fan isn’t easy. Being a fan isn’t unconditionally loving something. It’s loving of what makes something great and emotionally connected. Hence there had to be something more than just enjoyment. It required some hard work, and at times, it could be very stressful, hurtful, and heartbroken, especially the last four years of his competitive career. Fans also have sacrifices. Being connected with fans in every single step of his journey is necessary. I’m not talking about exposing his privacy. I understand he isn’t an idol. He had clearly stated he’s an athlete. However, his pro career is beyond being a figure skater. He’s an artist. Yes, family is a great foundation. Without them, he can’t build anything. But his career wouldn’t be successful without his audience. A lot of this takes planning and thought to keep his audience engaged and connected. He has a wide range of fans and many of whom are actively connected with him online. Keeping them engaged and emotionally connected is his job.

I had no doubt that everyone who followed him wanted him to be happy and get married someday. But the sudden announcement made it impossible for some fans to connect the missing dots. He was alone, and then suddenly married. Again, I’m not talking about exposing his privacy or his family members. There’s no reason the connection between him and his fans needs to end with figure skating. By sharing more of his passions and his life with fans creates an opportunity to strengthen the emotional connection. He could have shared slowly that he wished to have a family in the most subtle way through interviews or behind the scenes. He might have done that through some of his skating programs but they were difficult to interpret as everyone has their own particular way of understanding the meaning or significance. He had said he wanted to take care of his heart during his determination conference but it may be interpreted differently because of the situation where everyone was only focused on his career.

So simply put, a positive fan experience is critical to the success of his career, though I’m not sure if he needs or wants to expand his fan base.

Thank you for allowing me to express my two cents while I have this thought!

I wrote my post because I saw so many reactions, most of them joyous, but not all. I was taken completely by surprise by the announcement, but there were also those who told me they had caught some clues.
I don't know if his behavior was related to the fact that there are people who enjoy hurting him, if it was just a desire for confidentiality or if something happened that made him change his mind, before he didn't think of getting married even though he was in love , and then yes. Not knowing him, I can't say anything.
My post is, at least in part, an invitation to put things into perspective. To say that yes, he surprised us, but he is still him. I may be wrong, but in my opinion almost all of the fans who were disappointed by the sudden news because they felt an insincerity in a behavior that was probably just confidentiality, within a few days will find a new equilibrium and will look at him as before.

I was totally surprised, but when I thought about it, it made perfect sense.

Somewhere - it might have been in one of the Canadian interviews or possibly the show on Spanish TV about Fernandez - he spoke in English (which we know is not his preferred method of communication) and said that when he went to Canada it was difficult because he was used to being in Japan, speaking Japanese with his family and friends.  We know it’s an extremely difficult language interface between western languages and Far Eastern ones, plus a cultural divide, add in a killer workload (athletic and university distance learning) and with hindsight it’s not extraordinary that even if he was inclined to socialise, which he doesn’t seem to have been, he wouldn’t be able to make much more than a fairly shallow connection with someone who wasn’t Japanese, because for all his gifts, facility with foreign languages is definitely not one of them, and he had very little free time.

He went back to Japan when most of the world locked down and has been there ever since; he finished his degree, there were no competitions to work for, so he has had time to reconnect or make new connections with people who have a similar cultural background and with whom he is reliably able to follow all the nuances of conversation because they are all Japanese.  It must have been like bursting out of a straight jacket, and again with hindsight, that feeling of freedom might have influenced his decision after Beijing, because being part of JSF and under ISU - he was wearing two straight jackets for years. Having shed both of them it’s not astonishing if he made a connection with an existing or new contact, and given the way he and his family have handled his career so far a low key announcement seems perfectly in character, and totally understandable.

I totally agree with you. Yes, it is a surprise, but on the other hand, it makes total sense. From culture perspective, I think people are usually get marry around that age in Asia. The people around you will start to remind you "marriage" around that age. Also in the past 3 years, he is back to his hometown, his family, and his familiar environment.  It seems a perfect time to start a new(or deeper an existing) relationship. He is at right age, right? He just chose to announce it till the marriage. Nothing wrong with that.

Perhaps...perhaps... We should just continue to enjoy Yuzu's beautiful figure skating :multibow: & how he educated us what humility is (at least for me). Not going to debate or speculate for life is too short. :122fs329172:

Have a happy happy Friday Satellites! :grouphug2: :animated-smileys-angels-151:

P.S. if anyone needs a little tickle, may I recommend Big Bang Theory or Zoolander. :giggle:
