Hmmm... as a mushroom he did say he wanted to win the gold medal at the Olympics but he probably gradually realised that it wasn't that simple. Yes, his goal was always to be the Gold medalist but the walls he had to climb for Sochi were immense. Nationally, he had to overcome the big 3 (Takahashi, Kozuka, Oda) and leading up to Sochi Machida was also becoming a heavy hitter. Internationally, you have Patrick Chan who was almost unbeatable going to Sochi and even when Yuzu beat him at GPF'13 people still believed that Chiddy would win. So I think while he is greedy for Gold, realistically, he knew the battle would be tough. Even with a higher BV advantage a clean Chiddy could theoretically beat a clean Yuzu (GOE inflation wasn't as big an issue as PCS inflation).

My theory? Less pressure. Media talks about how hard it is to juggle skating/school but I actually think it's helped him relax. Being in university means his attention is split between academics and skating. Also, he's not spending a lot of time with Raf (not as much as he used to before Yale) who has been known to be a bit of a spartan and overambitious coach (iirc he still wants Nathan to do a 4Lo and 4S for the FS).
