How the heck did Nathan get a higher technical score for that program at SkAm with 3 quads and so many doubles than Yuzu with 5 quads at GPF? I still cannot grasp this.

The USFED don't care what changes occur, they will find a way to benefit anyway. I'm waiting to see if they will call Vincent PRs and URs or just ignore the new rule.

Honestly, it's like they changed everything according to Mishin's and RusFed desires - the combination of Flip and Lutz and the 'q' respectively. With the latter, they even admitted it was because last year RusFed was upset that for once the judges did their job and called Scherbakova's URs and wanted to avoid that happening again.

This 'q' thing was so obvious in the favor of the Russian girls (aka Eteri's up until now, will see later with Sasha). Now, they won't get URs anymore, which diminished the BV, but they will get 'q', with BV staying the same. The pre-rotation thing will be used arbitrarily by the judges, to lower GOE for those they don't like, not for them.

I think they are more likely in their favor with the 'q' thing. Now, they won't get URs anymore, diminishing the BV, but they will get 'q', with BV staying the same. The pre-rotation thing will be used arbitrarily by the judges, to lower GOE for those they don't like.

I can't believe they leveled Flip and Lutz as jumps (both triples and quads). Why do that? The entry difficulty of the Lutz seems not to matter anymore. This change is in no one's favor but those who are not capable of jumping Lutz. Yuzu is not one of them, both his triple and quad are excellent. So, this is definitely not in his favor. They seem to make the changes a bit clueless, they raised the BV for the quad Loop as it was not enough for it's difficulty, but lowered the BV for the Lutz to be the same as Flip, because the judges don't know/can't spot the difference between them. For Yuzu, it was like throwing him a bone with one hand and taking it with the other, as he has both these quads and they are both excellent. They should have left the Lutz the same, raise the Loop as it is more difficult and also raise the 4A, as it's the only jump for which the quad is not double in BV than the triple.

I was going to say the same... these two programs are Hanyu 100%, there couldn't be any other programs more Hanyu. These journalist have no actual clue, have they?

Yuzu's video today was impressive... For me, it speaks of his dedication to skating (what he does), to his fans, to the recovery cause he's championed so much... The effort he put into it speaks volumes about him, the attention to details is beyond imagination and the fact that he managed to evoke such powerful feelings with just snippets from each of his programs shows how much attachment his fans have for what's meaningful in his life. I think the mood of this video is very appropriate for the times we are living right now. I think he speaks from the heart, without the need for any words.

I know that PC Chopin was performed majestically, but for me PC Seimei will always win, even with the mistakes, because of that last part. Yuzu was truly unleashed there, truly free, truly happy. I could feel his happiness through the distance and through the screen. And it was obvious right after he finished the program. Whenever he's in doubt with himself, he should see that part of the program again, to get the feeling of what happiness skating brings. I think he even mentioned in an interview that he was supposed to be grave, like Abe no Seimei, but he couldn't control himself because he was so happy. So, not necessarily from a performance point of view, but from a feeling point of view, that program in PC is no1 for me. From a performance point of view, there are so many that I couldn't choose (might go with GPF 2016)

The moment Yuzu with a Chopin and Seimei like at GPF 2015 doesn't win over an empty program (even with an extra quad) might be the day when people finally start questioning the current downward path in FS (not the judges, they know already). Yuzu already hinted in his interviews about this (more or less subtle) and it obviously saddens him to see it. I'm just glad he got out of this trend that is pushed onto the skaters before he lost his love for FS. Not sure if he alone will manage to bring FS back to being a complete sport (not just jumping but also not just skating without powerful jumps), but at least he's doing something, even if it means sacrificing some victories for it. I admire him even more for this, as it's very few people nowadays who have the courage to go against trend.
-
I'm wondering, if after seeing Yuzu and he will no longer compete, will it be possible to just watch FS without any attachment to the competition/scoring aspect, just to see beautiful skaters, no matter their placements? Even now, there are some skaters who are not usually on the podium and who are worth watching for the beautiful skating they produce, it's just that I feel the corruption taints the experience for us because we see how much it affects them and Yuzu especially.

I know they reevaluate, I don't mean those, I mean the ones they give in real time. Those programs can be re-watched and the GOEs are visible on the screen right away. I can tell you that is not the case, actually the GOEs increased (on the score sheet is more than what it was displayed on the screen), which means that in the first they underscored him even more. If you check NC program (I was answering a post talking about beating him), you will see that the GOEs displayed on the screen are almost the same as what's in the score sheet, sometimes a bit more. Which means they firstly go with the overscoring for him, while for Yuzu they go with the underscoring first. In this case, they could even compare him with Yuzu, as he went first. I.E. - they saw Yuzu's Lz and still decided to give NC more although he had worse axis than Yuzu. I've lost my faith in fair judging. Luckily, I've not lost my faith in Yuzu, that he can triumph over this corruption. Personally, for myself, I don't care if he wins on not, I would like him the same no matter on what position he ended a competition. It's not the victories that make us love him. It's not like he's worth loving only if he gets the gold medal, I don't need to prove to anyone that he deserves my love and he doesn't need to win in order to reward it. Actually, he doesn't need to reward it at all, because love should not be conditioned by a reward. It's just that the corruption irritates me a lot. I'm trying to be more detached, but it seems I'm having difficulties with it. It's not like the sport was not corrupt regarding the judging system before. I only follow FS starting from the 90s and some of the judging then was definitely politic (especially at the Olympics).

There is likely no such thing anymore... At GPF, he got lower GOE on the Lz and Lo (especially) at the beginning of the program, when the judges did not know he will make the mistake on the 3A-3A combo. Had he made that combination, it would have been an almost perfect program (bar that step on the flip) and that still wouldn't have given him fair scores. Some say he is underscored because he's not consistent, but the judges have no way of knowing at the beginning of the program if he'll make mistakes, to give him low GOEs - they just do it anyway. H&L was an epic program, just like some say here that Origin could have been (they are right, although I already think Origin is epic, just that it wasn't perfectly clean yet). Still, the epic H&L was not rewarded properly. Even Oly Chopin was not rewarded properly imo (by today standards for PCS, you can get 96 for a lower quality program). After what Yuzu did with Chopin & Seimei at the end of 2015, they seemed afraid to reward him like that again.

he'll have the chance before that, at worlds. i'm thinking Patrick will be there.

I was thinking of various possible reasons: 1. maybe this could be the talked about tour with Il Volo? Does SOI in Japan have live singers? 2. The Hachinohe will open a new rink and is in his area and he's attending for the image. And the Yokohama rink it's special to him for skating there after his rink closed in 2011. 3. Yuzu has appointments due to the Olympics and cannot go to FAOI / FAOI is not held at all due to the Olympics 4. He will do both shows as he doesn't have injuries - presuming he can withdraw in case something like that appears The 3rd one I would like the least, as I was planning to go visit Japan this year and do it during the FAOI period to maybe have a chance to go to some shows (in the idea that i could get tickets). I chose between this and worlds, as it would cost about the same with some good seats there. Right now, I'm thinking of maybe changing my mind, although all the good tickets for WC are gone and I'm not sure I have the chance to find someone selling.

Yuzu in Stars on Ice this year? https://figureskate-soi.com/kg/skaters.html

Considering that Liza is apparently jumping the 4T already and she has 3A quite consistent, she might get so ahead in TES that Zhenya cannot catch up, no matter how much PCS they give her. With her, is still a question if she managed to fix her flutz. If she wants to still have a chance at some point, she needs to up her tech content, this is the trend now and she's getting left behind on this (even without quads and triple Axel, she hasn't maxed out on tech). Even Alena needed Sasha Trusova to make mistakes in order to win at GPF. It's very hard to beat her technical score if she skates a 4 quad program clean. Everybody seems to have understood it at this point, the fact that Zhenya doesn't do it probably means that she cannot at the moment (either because of health or lack of strength), as I don't think she would not want it. But with what's coming behind in terms of ladies in Russia, if by next year she cannot get top 3, not even the favors of Tatiana Tarasova can put her in the team for the Worlds.
-
possibly Zhenya has the fire because she didn't win the Olympics. if she had, she might have retired already. Alina got every important title. Yuzu is lucky with the 4A and his new challange to win over everybody, because he still has motivation after 2 OGM. possibly if he were in that culture, he woukd have given up, like Alina, Adelina, Julia and so on. the pressure is very high.

I'm sorry, I did not understand that their ability had something to do with their ethnic background. Possibly a misunderstanding from my part, as I understood that the post meant the inflated scores were being given on this criteria. I am just referring to scores, not to what their abilities are. In any case, score related, I do think they get it because of their US nationality, and it has nothing to do with China, as we can see that Boyang does not get anything handed to him and might not even get it at Beijing, just like Yuzu did not in Saitama.

In this day and age, when men are starting to jump quads at 12 years of age, I doubt their body an sustain the effort for 18 years. back in the days Gillis skated, there were no jumps, not even smooth deep edges. Even with quads, when Plushy won at 27, he had just 4T and it was wobbly. From a technical point of view, things have changed so much, that we cannot compare. And probably long after Yuzu will be retired, if this jumping trend continues, skaters will be doing quints (who knows, in 100 years they might be doing something totally new or FS might disappear completely). This does not diminish the achievements of these skaters even a bit, in my opinion they are all great for doing what they did/do (even those who don't win a medal at the Olympics). At the moment, Yuzu does not stand out just for the medals he's won and the records he has, but for the type of person he is, for he has managed to inspire so much love and devotion from his fans, like no other champion ever (in my opinion, not even Sonia can compare). Also, no offense to anyone, but those team events medals are hurting my eyes being in the same table with the single event ones. People know they are a joke, so at least they could put them in a totally different table.

by this logic, saying that nathan and alysa get candies for being american is also racist. well, racist or not, it is the truth. not sure about alysa, but nathan does not seem to enjoy much fame in china. part of the chineese are upset with him for his program a couple of years ago to mao's last dancer. yuzu has many fans in china and nathan beating him with inflated scores does not sit well with them. so i don't think he'll have it easy with the public in beijing. scores related, he's always fine, no matter where he skates. they gave him as much as possible in PC, but the short program was hard to recover from, otherwise he would have at least podiumed.
-
Except for when they don't, like after the worlds this year... when they pointed out what Yuzu needs to improve while at the same time praising his rival for improving his SS so much.
-
Of course I'm referring to the way things are now. He needs the tech to win now. PCS and GOEs are not enough, no matter how squeaky clean he is. what's in between jumps doesn't matter anymore for the judges. I don't want to compare to GPF 2015 results, because that was other scoring. That record will forever be there. It astonishes me that Brian could not foresee what would happen eventually, when he saw the advent of the quad era 20 years ago and in that time if you had a quad you would have been marked above the rest, even in the 6.0 system. I'm more astonished that even after it has happened, Brian could still be naive to think that a clean skate can win over a more technical one. Considering all you've said, I somehow feel sorry for Boyang, because after having the jumps he tried to improve his skills and it cost him the jumps when he could have just skated as before and get the good grades (not as good as you get for being american or russian, but still...)
