I wonder if there’s a single other country in the world carving up broadcast rights like this. We in Russia could watch the Wolrds in Channel One and Russian Eurosport. Both sucked as far as commentary went, but nevertheless, it wasn’t one channel and one channel only.
-
It might have, but it wasn’t Fuji reporting on it, was it?

There’s some interesting talk here, with Patrick Chan and Kirsten Moore-Towers supporting Naomi Osaka’s refusal to take part in press-conferences and her withdrawal from the French Open. https://www.ctvnews.ca/sports/athletes-osaka-s-withdrawal-raises-important-questions-on-media-and-mental-health-1.5454790?fbclid=IwAR3TGaOjz-ckMKGf8Cz0z7-Z24L2P39Oxtfoj3Df-_OpkuTlXu8CRmzJSak I’ll provide some quotes from there: “In figure skating, you've never felt so exposed in your life as when you're on the ice," Chan said. "And then when you get off the ice, it's your voice, and it's a very vulnerable time to have to explain your actions after such a short period of time to absorb it, and understand what happened and process it yourself. And while you're processing it, you're being asked to make statements and explain. "It always felt unnatural to me, whether it's a good performance or bad performance, you're quickly taken out of that experience, your moment of celebration or moment of disappointment, and thrust into the limelight of like 'OK, what happened?" I actually don't know, I need time here." <…> Chan, who was always gracious with the media, said underage athletes in particular, of which there are many in figure skating, should have a say in whether they do interviews. The hard line Roland Garros organizers reminded Chan of the International Skating Union. "You feel so powerless as an athlete. They're a multi-million dollar organization, and it shocks me that they just treat their athletes, who are their source of income, like pawns," Chan said. Chan said he struggled with bouts of depression and anxiety while competing, and even still now while he's navigating post-competitive life of "not being Patrick Chan, the figure skater anymore." He was a nervous competitor, he said, who was easily distracted by his surroundings. "If I could start it all over again, I would have implemented a sports psychologist much sooner in my career -- way, way sooner -- just to understand how my mind works, because each person is so different and we have such different personalities," said Chan.

[TW] Sexual Abuse & Misconduct in Figure Skating
Fay replied to sallycinnamon's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Oh yeah, people do change within 6 months of suspension... or not. Only to think that Maria Sotskova is banned from the sport for ten years for basically not announcing her retirement and taking some stuff to get thinner for her wedding, while here you can get away with sexual harassment of your student with just six months. I mean doping is a serious stuff, but apparently sexual harassment isn’t. -
I wouldn’t count on their being sensible. But the pandemic might throw a few spanners into their works still.
-
Nah, I don’t think we would ever learn about his getting married
-
A considerable chunk of me already wants him out. Though I do realise he will always care for the sport.
-
At that time I might be past caring.

They say Yuzu promised to tell something about his personal life? Any ideas what might be in store for us?

I just don't get it why Sarnovsky isn't on the list, for instance. -

How the hell did Samsonov get into the team? -
Elizaveta Osokina has become a pair skater and teamed up with Andrei Rud. https://www.sport-express.ru/figure-skating/news/figuristka-osokina-pereshla-v-parnoe-katanie-v-aprele-ona-vyigrala-pervenstvo-rossii-sredi-odinochnic-1795257/ A shame, I loved as a single skater last autumn. But no hope of making it out of deep ranks of Russian ladies

They say this is an ice cream shop in California. Anyone for Yuzu on Ice, folks?

I don’t understand it either, sorry.

Don't hurry. Now he's claiming evil journalists have distorted what he said and both skaters can compete for Olympic spots. Meanwhile, every skating celebrity has already been contacted and asked what they think about it, and every single of them said they were not surprised. Nothing can compare to our muddle.

According to Gorshkov (? None too sure here) neither Zagitova nor Medvedeva will be at the Olympics. No real surprises here, I guess?
