Truly, I had forgotten about that! I think that's the first World Cup I remember actually watching... *cries in old age*
Altie Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 France's victory in the 1998 world cup is the happiest moment in french history since the liberation at the end of WWII. I mean, it's been measured, it's objectively true. I've witnessed it, I remember it perfectly - it was really incredible, and it went on for months. Everybody, happy, dancing and singing. And it even had a positive effect on the economy ! So I think almost every french person knows the name of every single player of that team, and about the main games. Even if they know nothing about football (I mean, I know nothing about football, and yet... ). Sometimes, the importance football has is really crazy. Tbh, it's been difficult for the other national teams since these glorious days (it was 20 years ago ! M'Bappé wasn't even born back then !) to shine in the shadow of their elders. There were many scandals, lack of results, and NT became very impopular... But that new team, so young, sympathetic and talented, could succeed in making the national team popular again. Well, they ARE succeeding, I think. Griezman and Pogba were already stars before the world cup began. And Kante and M'Bappe are increasingly popular since the beginning of the world cup, there are songs about them, etc... And I must confess I'm rooting for the french team for the very first time in my life. And I'm not that young anymore :) Anyway, can't wait for friday.

I don't know how you would properly measure something like that, lolz, but we had some serious celebrations back in 1988, too, when the Netherlands won the European championships (we came close to a couple of world titles since then, but lately we haven't even managed to qualify for the big competitions). I was young in 1988, but remember it well (the same year was also the first Winter and Summer Olympics I watched). In fact, it's one of my 'youngest' memories, partying in the streets, and I made a paper Dutch flag with my friend. Unfortunately, I was young... and horizontal and vertical was not something I already understood. So, in fact, I made a French flag, and ended up walking on the streets with the flag turned 90 degrees, after my parents told me if I wanted to use the flag, I should hold it somewhat differently than a normal flag.
Winnie_20 Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 Been busy with real life (mainly good stuff) and my family have been occupied, too... but we still somehow managed to all feel like we really missed having soccer to watch these past few days. Scary how fast something like this becomes "normal". I don't even like soccer.... I mean, I thought I didn't.
Altie Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 I am not as stressed as I was for Yuzu at olympics, but still...
Winnie_20 Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 Gonna do the good local girl thing and root for my neighbors to the south and their neighbors to the south.
Altie Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 All Four teams playing today are fantastic. It's impossible to guess who the winners will be... Tbh, I'm surprised to see that so many people think France will win. The consensus here is that it is going to be VERY difficult. Even without Cavani. They have the best defense of the championship and a style that might asphixiate team France's qualities. There's a lot of mutual respect and admiration between team France and team Uruguay, though. A lot of the players are friends (Godin is even the godfather of Griezman's daughter !). They really had admirative words for eachother in press conference, that's really nice. But yeah, today I'm team Europe too - but whatever the winners, I hope the matches will be exciting and the victory well deserved !

I only watch football every 4 years why am I so invested I really missed it as well, hope today we will see some good games
Coquelicot Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 So excited for France-Uruguay! I hope Cavani is in good health and able to play. It's always terrible to see injuries on any side, especially when the players are needed most.
Altie Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 So, no Cavani, as expected And Tolisso instead of Matuidi, as expected. .... and... OMG !!!! They're awfully out of tune but that's sweet
