Just for a bit of happiness on a sad day today, I've transcribed Camden's comments below for anyone who wants to copy-paste translate. (Just edited out most of the times he said 'like' excessively. xD)

Interviewer 1: I have to imagine it's probably a little bit of a confidence-booster to hear Yuzuru Hanyu compliment your triple Axel.

Camden: Yeah! [laugh] Oh my gosh, I remember, first off, after that short, I was on top of the Moon. I was like, "Wow, I just scored 89 points in my first senior Grand Prix! I don't know what to do with my life." And then next thing you know, I have [the] conference and I'm sitting next to someone that - I remember when I was Juvenile, watching him at a Grand Prix Final, win. And I'm sitting next to him and I'm in second place - of course there was like a 15-point gap because he is God - [laugh] But it was like, I'm in the same room with him, in a conference with him, I'm sitting next to someone I looked up to, and just hearing that he respected me to some extent was - it was mind-boggling. And seeing him again at Four Continents, it was good to see him because I felt less of a fanboy and more of a friend to him, because since after Canada he's kind of been really nice to me and I feel more comfortable with him. Like at events I can see him, and - first thing we did at Korea was give each other a hug and say "Hi, how are you," and it was just like, I still feel like a fanboy but I feel [like] more of a friend. And, I remember at the banquet at Four Continents everyone was like "Oh, Hanyu, photo, photo, photo!" But he went out of his way to come up to me and say hi to me, and he took out his iPod and took a selfie with me, and he's trying to find the best [indistinct]. And I was like "Waaaaaaa!!!" I'm crying on the inside, low-key. But he wanted a selfie with me. I was just like, "Wow. This is a class act. Like, this man is a man of class."

Interviewer 1: I feel like you should take that and just remember that, and now you have it on record as well for next time you feel like a failure, 'cause [Camden: Yeah!] you're wrong. You're very wrong.

Interviewer 2: It's so hard to remember the good things, isn't it. I think we all struggle with that, right?

Camden: Exactly. Yup, yup, exactly.

I am going to revive this thread a little bit.

Over the past many years, so many different people have been drawn to Yuzu's skating, praised him for various aspects, or been inspired or touched by him, or shown their support for him in some way. Among them are also a lot of professional artists (dancers, musicians, actors, film/TV producers, painters, novelists and others) or elite athletes outside of figure skating (gymnastics, diving, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, tennis, table tennis, badminton, baseball, volleyball, shooting, track and field, speed skating, sumo, judo, karate and others).
The 10th anniversary of Yuzu's legendary performance in Nice is approaching, so i decided to compile these stuff to celebrate and pay respect to how much legacy has Yuzu created over those 10 years. Some of these stuff have been shared here before, or in the other threads on PH. Unfortunately, some sources have been deleted.

*I decided to put here mostly raw twitter/planet hanyu links instead of automated embeddings because too many embeddings per post seems to slow down the loading of this thread.

**All credits to the fans who shared these links and sources. I just compiled it together.

***Feel free to contribute with more sources

‘In ballet, dancers do 2 turns and it's already difficult. I understand how it's not easy to do 3 and 4 turns, but 4.5 - that's on the level of space, higher than air, something unbelievable.’
‘I can't evaluate Yuzuru as a professional figure skater, but I can watch as a ballerina, in terms of performance. His programs aren't just technical- they don't fall apart into different sections, elements, he really performs the dance & he dances with his entire body & soul.’
‘He can simply skate, axel or no axel, he is fully part of the music and hits every note. Everybody can feel that; the plasticity, the harmony. That's why it is always a pleasure to watch him, that's why the audience is in awe.’

Q: When did you first learn about Hanyu?
A: I have heard the name since I was a high school student. I watched Hanyu's performance closely at the Sochi Olympics, when he won the gold medal for the first time. I remember getting goosebumps. I thought how beautiful he was, how amazing he was at the same age, how he could skate with such supple movements even though he was a man, and so on. That's when I started paying attention. It was just the year I joined the company (Hamburg Ballet) from junior.
Q:What is the beauty of Hanyu?
A: From a ballet dancer's point of view, the first thing that catches my attention is the part between steps. I also try to take care of the steps, but Hanyu's smooth and careful connection is impressive to me. Even though I am not so familiar with figure skating, I can see that Hanyu's steps come naturally from smooth skating, then he jumps, and shows what he has to show. I am impressed by the way he moves so smoothly. Then there is the way he uses his body. How he turns the quadruple jumps with a rush of energy.

'A dancer must take great care of musicality, and the response to music must be instantaneous. When I watch a skater’s performance, in the expression before a jump, the ‘I will jump!’ vigor appears up front, and the beauty of the body line is lacking in the approach to the jump. As a dancer (watching), I am concerned about that. But of course, there are people who can do it.’
‘Hanyu has a very beautiful style and his landings are graceful. In ballet terms, this is because he can do the 'plié’ very well (the position where you sink the body by bending the knees). To jump high, the plié is necessary. In his case, his awareness extends to beyond the ground (the ice) at that moment.’
‘In ballet, we tell the story on a stage. In an ice show, it is a completely different world. The rink is big and the audience are on all 4 sides in a panoramic space. If I do it, I would perform while taking care of my body line towards all angles, to the audience on all sides.’

‘From a ballet dancer's point of view, what I find particularly outstanding about Hanyu is the beauty of his upper body movements. His standing posture, up-and-down movements of his body, etc. are also wonderful. His upper body is always relaxed, and his movements are soft and smooth. I have the impression that the body is well controlled. If the center of gravity is not in the correct position of the body, you feel unnecessary force. But Hanyu's center of gravity is in the correct position. Maybe that is why it is easy for him to move his upper body. And his arm coordination is great, too.’
‘He also dares to move one beat apart, doesn't he? Even if it is a trivial movement, he intentionally pauses in one beat before moving on to the next makes the impression of the movement calmer and gives meaning to the next movement. You can also see several movements that add accents in places, instead of doing them at the same tempo. Such things probably broaden the range of expression. The synchronicity of breathing and moving with the music is something we ballet dancers can relate to.’

Analysis of Ballade no.1 and Seimei (2020):

"The movements match the sound perfectly right from the start. The timing of the most accentuated sound coincides with the highest moment of the jump, and in order to achieve this, even the turn before stepping into the ground matches the sound and the movement of the ankle. I think when someone says "aiming to become one with the music" is that they are conscious of such sound accents."

"The way he puts the spin on it is also very stylish. It is like daring to chop the gentle part of the sound at 4 times speed. It betrays the audience in a good way, and since the slow and fast is created here, it is also a foreshadowing for the next exciting part of the piece. Of course, he has to put this technique in the first half, or to take into account the rules of figure skating, but this kind of ingenuity is an element that leads the audience to ecstasy."

"In the latter half of the piece, he combines sound with the superb technique of the steps. Skating is skating on ice, and there is a rule of technique, so you can't put in too many unnecessary moves. In that sense, I think the skater in this program have put in the maximum accents (of movement) they can. Even in places where ordinary skaters wouldn't put it, a single swing of the arm in time with the sound, it makes a complete difference in the overall impression. There is a flow between moves, and few skaters can tell a story with their facial expressions. But Hanyu controls both his technique as an athlete and his expression as an artist."

"There are actually a lot of dancers who don't have a good sense of tone or rhythm. Perhaps the same is true of figure skaters; not all of them have a good sense of sound. As for old skaters, Katarina Witt, in "Carmen" (1988), she brilliantly integrated with the sound. Evgeny Plushenko, whom Hanyu admires, also gave me the impression that he is a player who listens to sound well. But in this "Ballade No. 1," I got the impression that he went even further. I could smell him in every single note. Just like a piano or a violin, Hanyu himself became a musical instrument and was embedded in the music, in the score. I think he must have listened to the piece hundreds of times and hold an (imaginary?) conversation with the composer, Chopin."

"Just dancing to the count to a song does not make you 'one with the sound'. The count is just an indicator, so once you get it into your body, you have to forget it. Hanyu, too, is finally freed from the count, and he himself has become music. It is as if he is playing between the notes on the wave called Chopin. It is as if he is jamming with Chopin. His performance is on such a level that it is very pleasing to watch."

"Hanyu's two programs are no longer competitions, but works of art. It's not a matter of winning or losing, or technique, but of reaching the level of art, which I think is what Hanyu is aiming for. I was more concerned about whether "SEIMEI" was able to embody "holiness" than whether there were any mistakes in terms of competition. I think this is the most important part of the artistic work that he is aiming for, and I think it was probably the part that he regretted the most."

"I am very much looking forward to seeing him perform it again at the World Championships. I would like to see what kind of "art" Hanyu, who has already become the emperor of the skating world, will complete in the future."

(translated with DeepL)

Softness, sadness, tenderness, and overwhelming beauty.... When I first saw Yuzuru Hanyu's performance of "Notte Stellata", I could feel the graceful expression of emotion in my heart. The lyrics sung by "Il Volo" is a serenade, layered with romantic tones. I felt that Hanyu, too, expressed graceful beauty and melancholy, not despair of "death," even though his costume and choreography were inspired by the "Dying Swan" of the ballet.

What surprised me most of all was his dynamic and captivating movement of the tempo of the slow-flowing song. We musicians often use the phrase "Fill in the white ball". It is very difficult to express a white ball, that is, a stretched note, such as a whole note or a half note. If it is played flat and extended, the music will stop. If it is a cello, it can be expressed by vibrato, or if it is a song, it can be expressed by turning and flowing the breath, and by holding it down. When I saw his performance, I couldn't help but think, "Wow, there's a white ball filled in there.“

Even though it is not a program with flashy jumps and spins, he continues to express his emotions using his long arms and legs in a big way even during the slow-flowing sound. It was more subdued than I had imagined. And yet, it is graceful.

In addition, even though it is hard for him to keep using his muscles, the audience does not feel his "breath". In the case of music, when you are performing an aria in an opera, if you breathe, the performance is cut off and becomes just a "song". It is important to start from the beginning of the scene and keep the flow of the song, and he did the same thing.

If he had pursued music instead of figure skating, I think he would have become a terrific musician.

about POTO

Spoiler

https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4628703068032459
Last year's program At the concert (Music with Wings), in addition to "Notte stellata," I also sang "The Phantom of the Opera". When I saw the landing of the jump at the beginning of that program, I couldn't help but think, "Seriously?" I was struck on my knees. This may sound geeky, but it reminded me of Verdi's "Requiem" conducted by one of my favorite conductors, Riccardo Muti.
In "Dies Irae," the most famous melody in the "Requiem," a big drum is played to start the dramatic scene, but Muti shook it to bring the strike point just a little earlier. By doing so, the "o" part of the vowel sound of the drum's "don" becomes the beat head, expressing a sense of urgency as if the drummer is coming to the front. This is exactly how Hanyu lands his jumps. The landing hit with a bang, not at the on-time strike point, but at the most comfortable point where the sound rises. I think he does it not by calculation but by feeling.

(translated with DeepL)

What strikes me about Mr. Hanyu's performance in "The Phantom of the Opera" is the sound frame of his landing of the quadruple toeloop in the first half, and his too exquisite timing with the iconic "ta-da!" sound. No matter how many times I see it, I can't help but think, "Wow! I am so happy to see this. He instantly calculates the timing of his descent with his outstanding sense of balance while making that advanced jump.
The way he matches the music at the "Ina Bauer" part also sends shivers down my spine. I felt as if I was watching a new work of art called "ice skating ballet" rather than a competition.
As I felt when we performed together, I wonder if it is his innate sense of rhythm, or cultivated through practice, or perhaps both, but Hanyu's sense of rhythm, the way he feels the rhythms, is very detailed and precise. I am guessing, without taking the liberty of speculating, that because of this, there is a great deal of leeway and freedom in the sense of fitting the body and mind into the rhythm, and that this allows him to fall perfectly in tune with the sound.
Another thing that amazes me is his ability to involve the audience and create a whirlpool of emotion. The great power stemming from Mr. Hanyu's basic attitude toward life, as if he wanted to give something to the audience, to communicate, to be of help, to send a message, and that this is his joy and mission - along with the thoughts of those who share his feelings, became a vortex of energy that filled the venue and amplified. I think he is a rare artist who truly embodies the essence of entertainment. "

Kaori Kishitani mentioned about #YuzuruHanyu at her blog written on 7/2/2018 when she performed & sang for the skaters at the ice show Fantasy on Ice. She has a daughter Chibika (nickname) who she took to the ice rink everyday when she was little (lower elementary grades)
& the king, #YuzuruHanyu kun, each & everyday, he sat in his place at the rink, such as while eating, he was watching the sound check. He checked his choreography at a times we were doing "Diamond" &"the hottest summer in the world" then w/out realizing, go back &eat again
He was the only skater who was watching while we soundcheck. So I asked why, then he said that he wanted to see how's musicians are like that day! I thought, he must be listening to the sound of today, definitely not the same as yesterday, & putting it into his body. It isn't the choreo's key points, but the music's key points, which is the rhythmic points that I inadvertently express w/my body, and I saw it over&over that Hanyu-kun also was skating while feeling that, the music's key points. I was quietly moved thinking, that's why he's Hanyu.

Kaori Kishitani on #YuzuruHanyu: I've seen Hanyu's performance many times on TV, but seeing him in person, it is like a withered leaf dancing in the wind, or, a crane spreading its wings, or like a fleeting, ephemeral fairy, and was truly beautiful!! My daughter saw Yuzuru Hanyu's performance in person, & says he moves are most beautiful in the world, more than any living being on the earth & since then she seems 2be watching his video everyday on the YouTube. But I too understand how she feels! It was truly like that. And the world champion was also a wonderful human being. I asked his mother when beside him, "How on earth do you raise to become such a wonderful son??" inside my mind over and over.

[2022] about various Yuzu’s performances

- One of Yuzuru Hanyu's exhibition numbers, "Hana ni nare (Become a flower)", was written by Fumiya Sashida, with whom he performed at an ice show in 2012. At that time, he recalls, he was surprised to see Hanyu performing the song while lip-synching the lyrics during rehearsals.

- "I got the impression that he had listened to the song many times and that he understood the lyrics very well and was expressing them exactly as they were written. Of course, he skated to my music, but it didn't feel like he was 'acting', it was more like he was expressing his own emotions and what he wanted to communicate. I felt that his performance itself was speaking."

 - The atmosphere of the song and the world of the lyrics were all expressed. Hanyu's skating, which seemed to sing with his body, seemed to recognize the music.

 - "I'm embarrassed to say this, but when I saw his performance I thought, 'Did I ever write lyrics like that?' (laughs).  Usually I try to keep my personal feelings out of my lyrics, and this time I felt a little guilty, like I might have put a bit too much of my ego into the song, and I wondered if it was really good to put it out there. But when he and I fused our performances together, I genuinely thought, 'Oh, that's a great song'. It was the first time I felt that my work on this song was meaningful, and that I had been rewarded for it."

 - Ten years have passed since they first collaborated with each other. How did Sashida see his "good friend", with whom he still keeps in touch, competing on the big stage for the third time at the Beijing Olympics?

 - "In both the short program and the free skate, I felt that all the achievements and the intense time he has spent in this sport so far were concentrated in his performance. If Yuzuru Hanyu was pale pink when I first met him, he has now matured into a deep red. The way he continues to evolve as he ages is truly inspiring."

 - Sashida says that from the moment he met Hanyu, "I think of him as an artist-athlete".

 - "I feel that Hanyu's performance transcends the boundaries of sport and gives hope to those who watch him, and represents a positive attitude."

 - It is not only limited to exhibition programs. It was also felt in the SP and FS performances at this year's Beijing Olympics.

 - "In the competition, there are judges who score every detail, so it's a different kind of tension. But from a musician's point of view, when it comes to "performing music", from my point of view, both competitions and exhibitions are the same. Hanyu skates with attention to what he wants to communicate through his programs, but also takes care of the process to get there, and I feel he values that."

- About "Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso", which he performed in this season's SP, Hanyu said, "It's a program where I have a strong feeling to put on a specific story to the music" and "I'm able to skate with emotions as if it were an exhibition".

 - "When we performed together at the ice show, and when I saw him as a spectator, I felt that he cares about his exhibition programs very much, and he doesn't make any compromise on how to express his feelings and how to put emotions into his programs. Of course, he interprets every single note, but I felt that this season's SP is even more refined and advanced in the way he puts his own emotions into it, in the way he expresses himself as a storyteller, and in the way he conveys his emotions to others. That's why I feel that he is able to express the unique worldview of this music. I also felt that even though he was performing with a recorded music, it was as if it was performed live. And he looked like the conductor."

 - On the other hand, following "SEIMEI", with which he won the PyeongChang Olympics, he continued with the Japanese-themed free skate "Heaven and Earth", in which he demonstrated the fusion of music and performance.

 - The use of Japanese instruments made his performance more "Japanese". His performances, including the SP, were full of delicate expression that only he can do now, such as the subtle phrasing and interpretation of the music, and I felt that he was very precise.

 - The quadruple axel at the beginning of the free skate was an unprecedented feat. But it blended in so well that it felt like part of the programme's choreography.

 - "I'm always amazed at the number of new challenges he comes up with (laughs), but I think it's great that he's willing to take on such a difficult challenge. The program itself, I feel, is driven by the desire to "communicate". Throughout the program, you can feel the determination to convey his message. Whenever he performs, he is full of emotions, so I think it would be more appropriate to say that he always tries to convey his message, rather than 'skating through'."

‘My favorite is "Romeo and Juliet. I felt his sex appeal when he was skating, and his expression became more mature, like a new Yuzuru Hanyu.’
‘Hanyu's performance seems to be "broken/collapsed" in a good sense. I am the type who sings as I like in the rhythm, but Hanyu, too, is skating with himself within the rules. I feel that he is similar to a musician who likes to freestyle. I think that's why you can feel the rawness of human nature in his performance.’

(Traslated with DeepL)
about Hope & Legacy: ‘Hanyu's performance naturally expresses this harmony between times. There is a 'gravity' in each movement. For example, at the beginning of his performance, he moves his arms beautifully while skating amidst the piano's repeating sixteenth note, but he does not just show his arms, he expresses 'gravity' by using pause. And even in the jumps and spins, there is an "exchange of energy," as if breathing from the inside to the outside and from the outside to the inside. I feel that even the breath he takes is expressed as a piece of music. ‘
‘For Japanese styles/sounds as "Hope & Legacy" and "Seimei," I feel the spirit of facing up to and expressing his own roots in Japan and Asia. I had the opportunity to perform "SEIMEI" (live collaboration) at the exhibition of the 2019 All-Japan Championships, and it was so divine that I was thrilled to perform it. In fact, the night before, we had to hastily edit the piece to shorten the program, but on the day of the show, we were perfectly in tune with every note.‘

I feel that Hanyu is especially wonderful in the way his movements perfectly match the music. Other than the jumps, the connecting movements seem to be blended into the music, and I watch them with a sense of beauty. The choreography was choreographed to match the rhythm and intonation of the music. He's been doing this since he was a kid, I think. I feel that he has a good understanding of music.
Is it "space" (in common with the conductor)? When you go out on the rink or the stage, it's important to be able to distribute the atmosphere from the start. I think everyone follows Hanyu from the moment he comes out. As in "Heaven and Earth" this time and "SEIMEI" before, from the moment the sound is heard and the hands are moved, the air is suddenly filled with love.
[...]
Hanyu's sense of setting the music in place is remarkable. Even if it's the same piece of music, each skater has his or her own way of expressing it, and you can hear it in your head and ears. In this program, the music is absolutely in tune with the performance. The music is so transcendent that it seems to accompany the movement.

I am not an expert on figure skating, but I feel that each athlete has his or her own character, individuality, and charm. If I had to describe Hanyu, I would say that he is a genius as an expressionist.
Not only as an athlete, but also in the sense that he expresses himself in a way that no other athlete can, in terms of art or artistic expression.
I have been involved in Butoh and avant-garde theater for a long time, so I am familiar with ballet dancer Nijinsky, for example. I feel that he is similar to those people, and I am sure that he has a role to play in changing the history of that genre. In fact, I believe that Hanyu has done just that.

What I think makes him a great expressionist is that he combines both poles: the soft and the hard, the hot and the cool." He is effervescent with passion but always calm, sharp but also graceful. I think that is why he matches music so deeply and gives depth to his expression. Still, he is not satisfied with the status quo and continues to search for even deeper expression, which I feel has something in common with the mentality of a classical master performer.
When someone from a completely different field expresses my music, a chemical reaction occurs and it is sublimated. White Legend" was lucky to get its wings from Hanyu and soar high into the sky.

(Translated with DeepL):

It's Hanyu there, but it' s amazing that he somehow manages to grasp the beat of the music so easily. It may not be appropriate to say this, but I am amazed that he is able to rotate and jump in spite of this rhythm of music. How did he get the timing done? The way he takes the beat and the pauses. Not to mention he’s doing that with skates and on the ice, it’s beyond imagination.
I watched the two performances from the 2015 and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics to talk about it, and even before the music, his skating is still amazing. Even if he had used other music, I think he could have achieved the same results. The way he turns low and caresses the ice, for example, will impress anyone who sees him. It is like touching the skin of the ice, like stroking your own big earth. ......
Toward the end of the show, he spreads his outstretched legs and spins around repeatedly in the shape of the letter T. It levels nicely with the blue horizontal line of the audience wall. It is simply astonishing. Also, the form of the body is truly beautiful. It must be a nice encounter with the ice. That's how I feel."

I have the impression that most of the skaters are moving by listening to the sound. I guess you could say that they start to move after responding to the sound. But in the case of Hanyu, I feel that the timing of his movements is a little faster. When our concerts go well, the audience says, "It was like a magic", and the conductor and the sound are in tune with each other.
During the performance, I also noticed something when I watched the performance on the screen. I had the impression that his hands were moving as if they were touching the sound, as if he was "moving by feeling the tips of his fingers. I guess you could say that the sound was attached to the outstretched hand. Other skaters seem to be a bit more broad(?), but I had the feeling that I was watching a different kind of expression from Hanyu's.

about Origin (he conducted at Music with Wings)

Spoiler

https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4628703068032459

(OCR + translated with DeepL):

There is another program of Hanyu's that remains in my mind from the standpoint of being involved in music as a conductor: "ORIGIN". It is a program that I felt a change from Hanyu's previous programs while watching it. His performance is connected or refined from the beginning to the end. There is no interruption.
In figure skating, for example, if you know ahead of time that there will be a jump, I think it would distract you. But this was a program that didn't make me feel that way. For Hanyu, it was the beginning of his immersion in skating, but for me, it seems to express something primitive, like the origin of music, the source of life, and that is another reason why "ORIGIN" is so impressive.
Looking back on that concert, I think again that Hanyu is a person who has been pursuing the art of expression. I believe that expression is the act of accumulating something inside and conveying it to others. It is something that incorporates the extent to which one has filtered something, the experiences one has had, and the time one has spent working toward it, all of these things. Moreover, the expression shows everything about the person. Conductors are the same way.
It is a scary world where people can tell how you spend your time in your private life. That is why dignity is important to me, and I always keep in mind how to live my life to be a person of dignity. What Hanyu's performance shows is a prestigious and rich world. That is where Hanyu's inner world is. I believe that art is something that can be conveyed to people who do not know that world, and something that influences others. In that sense, I feel that Hanyu's performance is art.

He performed this live with yuzu before in 2015 - he says truthfully, performing live with a skater is tough because you have to match the music with triple and quad jumps but at the time, yuzu told him to play freely. if he (toshiya-san) put his emotions towards the music into his piano playing, yuzu said he would match that, no matter the tempo & cue. toshiya-san said that it really warmed his heart and he felt that it was a true collaboration.

He performed with yuzu at FAOI 2015. collab wasn't planned - yuzu asked him and they did the collaboration at the last minute as a surprise so he says it was perhaps a fated thing and an honour. he said it was a challenge ballade's full piece is close to 10min so he only had one night to learn the shortened version. for yuzu, it was a totally different sound source to the norm, esp since ballade's tempo changes are v intense & length of notes/tempo vary depending on performer so it's hard to match. but yuzu's musical sense allowed him to feel the performer's 'breathing'/pace instantly & match the sound. and it's not just being able to match the notes but the ability to express the characteristics & emotion of each note, the way it appears and disappears, that was amazing. fukuma-san adds that from jnr to now, the ability to jump quads in mens is great in itself but he feels that where yuzuru is amazing is that he makes such difficult jumps & spins just one part of the musical expression, part of the work of art and is very happy about that.

Q: Yuzuru Hanyu won the Olympic gold medal in Sochi, and four years later, he became the first skater after 66 years who defended his Olympic gold medal. It is a huge achievement. After the Olympic Games, he decided to skate to Art on Ice and Magic Stradivarius in his free skate as a tribute to his favourite skater, Plushenko, and he named his program ’Origin’. How did you react about his music choices?

EM: I was very happy about his decision. I think it is fantastic that such a genius like him chose my music and that he skates to these pieces. It made me feel really happy.

Q: Did you help him editing the original tracks?

EM: No, him and his team edited the music. They asked me to do it on their own and I said of course, they can do however they prefer to do it. There are musicians who don’t really like if any notes are changed in their songs, but I’m flexible when it comes to it. Let them soar and spread their wings! I give them freedom and to me, the most important is if they feel fine. In this sense, I don’t like restrictions.

Q: Last year you were there at the Rostelecom Cup in the middle of November, when Yuzuru won the competition.

EM: Yes, I was there in Moscow at the competition. I had a concert two weeks later, which I promoted in the television – I asked the TV to arrange it the same weekend as the competition so that I could go to the Grand Prix as well.

Q: On the morning of the free skate, Yuzuru injured his ankle when he fell from a quadruple jump, and he only had a couple of hours to completely change the layout of the skate. Did you see him skate for the first time, and how did you like the program?

EM: Yes, it was the first time seeing him skate live. Because of the injury, the situation at the competition was unusal, and it’s difficult to judge how he’d have skated without this, he’d have skated more effortlessly. He’s very professional and a genius but even for him this situation was really difficult.

Q: After the competition you met him and did you talk to him, too?

EM: Yes, we met after the competition and he invited me to Japan, to an ice show. Now everyone is focusing on the World Championships, but let’s see what happens after that – I’d like to go there if we can manage it. Ice shows in Japan are a bit different than for example, Russia or other shows in Europe. In Russia, there are the skaters of course but the focus is also on the musicians and sometimes there are other forms of arts, too, like ballet. In Japan the focus is more on skating. So it’d be nice to go there and play for Japanese audience.

Q: Since the Rostelecom Cup Yuzuru couldn’t skate at any competition, but he’ll return at the World Championships soon.

EM: I think he’ll be absolutely ready for the World Championships. [smiles]

Q: Would you ever like to write a piece of music for one of Yuzuru’s programs if there was a request for it?

EM: Yes, of course. Music is my life, and it is very important to me if I can write new music for skaters.

(translated with DeepL)

Eight years ago, when he was studying in Russia, he saw Yuzuru Hanyu's performance at the Sochi Olympics, and now he has seen it again on video. The topic of figure skating, which "is like a national sport for Russians," came up frequently in the classes at the Tchaikovsky Memorial Moscow Conservatory, where I was enrolled at the time. Hanyu, in particular, was well known in Russia.
I was proud of him, but at the same time, I felt a little frustrated because we were the same age. Also, it's not fair that the audience applauds him every time he makes a jump (laughs). But it's really cool to see him competing on the world stage, I have nothing but respect for him.
It was Hanyu's program that brought classical music to people who were not interested in it at all. People often say to me, 'That's your music, isn't it, Hanyu?
Ballade No. 1", with its beautiful melody full of lyricism, is Chopin's ballad and his early masterpiece. It is said that even pianists find it difficult to perfectly digest this masterpiece, which appeals to people's hearts through changes in tempo and tonality. It is said to be difficult for pianists to digest perfectly. In the middle of the piece, where the key changes from minor to major, Chopin describes his upbringing and future, as he cherished his native Poland. In addition, the beautiful melody in the middle section expresses the fantasies and illusions he had about Poland in the major key, and the realization that this was reality. In the final fervent coda, the piece ends with the realization that maybe it was all just a dream, a fantasy. Such a storyline is a worldview that a pianist would not want to destroy, but watching Hanyu's performance, I can feel that he has a firm understanding of such things. I feel that a lot of thought has gone into the editing.
In addition to composers, Hanyu has always been close to the "sound" of performers as well as composers, in his pursuit of expression.
In an interview with Number magazine, he admitted that he had digested the parts of "Ballade No. 1" that could not be played in figure skating programs due to time constraints, and made it into a highly complete program.
Q: What music would you "like to see" in Yuzuru Hanyu?
A: Edvard Grieg, ......, and French music, such as Maurice Ravel's Impressionist music, would also be suitable. But it's a little difficult to use in figure skating programs, because it lacks the "here" excitement. Personally, I would like to see Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".

When Yuzu’s new short program was announced to be Chopin’s Ballade No.1 last year probably played by Krystian Zimerman, how did he feel at that time ? I was concerned about that…. And then Ballade No. 1 was adopted to his repertoire.'
Tomoharu says, “ I thought it's still early for me to play it, but when I heard that he wanted to improve his  ability of expression and performance to create something new with Ballade No.1, I thought I could grow up like him by practicing the same music. That’s why I adopted it to my repertoire. ”

'The "Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang" were held from February 8 to 25, 2018. Germany, of course, has also received good news of the spectacular achievements of Japanese athletes. Among them, it is no exaggeration to say that Yuzuru Hanyu, a figure skater, was the most exciting athlete in Japan.
In fact, I have little interest in watching sports. The only sport I have a strong interest in is figure skating. This is probably because figure skating is both a sport and an art form. Classical music is often used, and there are many music-related people like myself who are deep-rooted fans of figure skating.
In figure skating, Hanyu won his second consecutive title at the Olympics this year. He continues to be the talk of the town, attracting the attention of Japanese people in Japan and abroad even after the games have closed. He received a simple request from Hanyu, “I absolutely want to use the main theme from Onmyoji and the dragon flute tracks. I’m leaving everything else up to you.” So, he chose pieces from the two albums that seemed to fit well with skating and put them together into one. While visualizing Hanyu’s skating, he combined seven songs characteristic of [him].

“In [Hanyu’s] case, he is awfully particular about music. He said, ‘I will work with this as a basis for now’ and from this point on, went to work on building the full-fledged program alongside his choreographer in Canada.”

The email exchanges continued even after that. “I want this bit moved back 5 seconds” and “I would like the tempo at the end imperceptibly increased and bring it all to a close within the time limit” and so forth. As training progressed, “I want taiko for the conclusion,” “I’d like some ‘gap’ or ‘space’ put in right here,” et cetera. In the end, 33 versions of “SEIMEI” were made. Yano-san laughed as he reminisced about [the experience].

“The requests ballooned quickly. But, I cannot say it is impossible as a pro!”

There was a part in the middle of the program that became a hot topic amongst fans. Edited such that two tracks from two different albums were overlaid and combined into one, it came from the suggestion of choreographer Shae-lynn Bourne. The piano and the dragon flute playing the same melody were of completely differing pitch and tempo, so actually, they weren’t something that could be easily overlaid and synced. After much struggle and difficulty, Yano-san completed that beautiful part.

I can't help but admire skaters for overcoming their anxieties and going into the competition. Yuzuru Hanyu, even when he is frustrated, even right after his performance, he faces it and accepts it as soon as possible. I feel that he is an adult, and I am inspired by him.

However, Hanyu has always performed wonderfully at the Olympics and other competitions, and even if he has a fall in a jump, he recovers well. From his efforts to challenge again and again, and the way he refines his performances, I feel his strong mental strength.

His dynamic performance is impressive, as if his youthfulness is bursting forth, and he plays a role that would be a bit difficult for a Japanese actor to play, the intense but pure Romeo, to the best of his ability. Although he was only 17 years old, the concentration with which he put into his performance was tremendous. I also felt that the second season he played Romeo was a delicate portrayal of the anguished Romeo. The details of his performance, such as the posing at the end, seemed to convey his strong will to make the program more sophisticated. What both performances have in common is that Romeo is there, even though he does not sing or utter a word.

This is where Hanyu surprised me, because even though he is performing by himself, I can see Juliette in his performance. Of course, she does not actually exist, but it makes me imagine what kind of Romeo, who is played by Hanyu, fell in love with Juliet.... It is the same in both performances of the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 seasons. I also felt the same in The Phantom of Opera - the Phantom's counterpart, Christina's appearance. I think this is not because Hanyu is simply performing the program, but because he values the storyline of the piece itself.

He is in a dimension that transcends even the word "expression. I am sure that Hanyu has also trained in the technical aspects of jumps, spins, and steps, but the worldview he creates seems to me to be in a dimension that transcends even the word "expressing" anymore.

There are similarities in terms of music and dance, but above all, the people on stage are very inspiring in terms of expression. Behind the beauty, we can see the effort and passion that has been practiced every day without a break to get there. I myself was moved by the performances of Hanyu and Mao Asada, and they gave me a lot of motivation to work hard as well.
What is especially great is that the conditions are not always the same. The size of the venue and the ice conditions are different every time, and sometimes jumps fall over, so you can't always move as you count. Even if Hanyu has a mishap, he always doesn't miss the next note. It is strength of body and mentality. Furthermore, there are tens of thousands of thoughts behind Hanyu. He has a heart that responds to the high expectations he receives, and he continues to delicately pursue his technique and expression. This, combined with his high level of spirituality, is what makes his performances so captivating to people all over the world.

Is figure skating an art? Is it a sport? Yuzuru Hanyu is truly a performer. I feel the power of dreams that transcends sports. The bowing after the performance was also a part of the spirit of the Tohoku region, without being obnoxious. It may be my own personal favoritism as a native of Tohoku, but I think it is nothing but a spirituality of gratitude to heaven, earth, and all living creatures, which has nothing to do with the score. When other skaters score high, it seems to me that they are only performing as a result of their skill and training. So even with figure skating, I see a kind of fantasy power of how much they can help people's hearts. What I'm trying to say is that the power of dreaming is more important than the looks. It means that I want to support Yuzuru Hanyu's spirituality.

Fuuto: When my schedule allows I go to the venue too, but I haven’t have such chance for 2 years…

Miho: How was it seen in person?

Fuuto: It was more intense. The speed and the height of the jumps were more impressive than seen on TV. I thought that this should be seen in person.

Miho: Who do you like most?

Fuuto: Yuzuru Hanyu. (laughs)

Miho: What do you like most about Hanyu?

That’s not everyone can normally do. However he faces such challenge, and that’s what I find most cool about him. He inspires me to try hard like he does…

Miho: Oh you like him that way… you know, if I were you, I would be like “OMG, he’s so cooool!!” but you wouldn’t… when you watch figure skating, right?

Miura Haruma made an appearance on a Sendai local program to promote his upcoming movie Eine kleine Nachtmusik which was filmed in Sendai last year. The hosts immediately asked about Hanyu's parade since the dates coincided and he said he couldn't go but the producers went laughing.
In other program the question was: What in Sendai left the biggest impression on you? And while producer started mumbling along the lines of  'Well... that is...obviously...' Haruma just started laughing and then went "Hanyu Yuzuru parade" at the same time as producer xD

Abe:  We were not told about it, so when he appeared at the shoot, we were so surprised!
Q: When we see Hanyu-kun normally, of course we know it’s him. But with a ‘chonmage’ (hairstyle), the first thought might be 'who is that??’
Abe: My first thought was, what a beautiful person! ….Isn’t that Hanyu-san??  In the Edo period, the common people were not allowed to look at the lord, but we kept looking at him, even during the real shoot! (laughter)
Q: How was his acting?
Abe: He was good.  He did his lines well from the start.  Even when it was alright, he said 'can I do it one more time please?’  It came from him.  He had the desire to do even better.

Q: How do you see Yuzuru Hanyu as a performer?
A: I think he is very aware that he is an expressive person. He attracts many people not only as an athlete, but also in other ways. The way he expresses himself, he seems to be in "dialogue" with the audiences, and in that context, of course, he has to master his skating. It is also essential to skate beautifully and precisely. That is the sport that is evaluated as a score, but I think that he is not only stuck to that, or he is able to have a good dialogue with the audience.

In the case of Mr. Hanyu, he does not sing or speak, but expresses himself only with his body like a mime, and I think that is his charm. His skating, his spins, his various movements, they all grab the hearts of the audience. It's like a magic that fascinates you without anyone being able to explain how wonderful it is. In that sense, I think Mr. Hanyu himself has a magical aura.

James Erskine [UK] – film director, screenwriter

Spoiler

(translated with DeepL)

Director Erskine has named Yuzuru Hanyu as the skater that attracts him in the ice skating world right now.
Erskine learned about Hanyu from an article in the British newspaper The Guardian. He recalled that "Hanyu is extremely talented as an athlete and outstanding in his artistic side," and that it "was a timely reminder of Curry's grace and greatness."
"Even among athletic geniuses, it is rare to find athletes like Curry and Hanyu 'who combine an appeal that makes the audience not simply admire their greatness, but also feel empathy when watching them."

https://number.bunshun.jp/articles/-/839364?page=3

"I think Yuzuru Hanyu is the closest to John [Curry]. I think he has a high level of skill and is excellent in terms of art. It stands out compared to other players. I feel that. In the world of sports, there are geniuses, such as Messi in soccer. The genius here is not just amazing, but a player who has something that really attracts him. A player who not only enjoys watching, but also has something more powerful and wants to empathize with the person. Hanyu is the same."
“And figure skating is a beautiful sport. Whether it's John or Hanyu, I think it's interesting that the artist part and the athlete part coexist in one person.”

As for athletes, I like the type who show their emotions, so it is Yuzuru Hanyu who appeals to me. In terms of challenging history, he is aiming for the first quadruple half jump in history and the first three consecutive Olympic titles in figure skating in 94 years. I quit my job as a dance instructor and became a novelist at the age of 30. about Beijing (interview)

https://planethanyu.com/topic/1145-general-yuzuru-chat/page/6964/#comment-509189

-With a third consecutive title on the line, Hanyu was not afraid of the high-risk big jump.
 - "For me, at the World Championships, where I was going to win my third gold medal, I did the most difficult technique, 'Shirai 3', and won. At that time, I was thinking, 'Watch Kenzo Shirai performing on the floor'. As someone who knows the 'view of victory,' I'm sure Hanyu had a desire to leave behind something different in this Olympics."
 - In the short program he accidentally finished 8th. However, there was something that resonated with Shirai.
 - "I felt that his bad result in the SP could be a factor to refresh his mind. I also had a bad start on the first day of a competition, but on the second day I was able to perform better. I was hoping that would be the case for him, that he would be able to say 'The only way to reverse this situation is to succeed'."
 - In the free skate, he jumped a quadruple Axel at the beginning.
 - "I thought he was able to show the form he had been working for. He fell, but I was impressed not only by the form of the jump that I saw from the outside, but also by his spirit of challenge, the inner part of him as a human being."
 - At the press conference on February 14, Hanyu confessed that after much trial and error, he had changed back to the form he had when he was nine years old.
 - "He was right, I think. As we get older, our own experiences, the methods of other athletes, and general theories become valuable lessons, but they also accumulate as negative influences. I started twisting in gymnastics when I was four years old, and I feel that the way I twisted back then, which I learned 100% by my own body without thinking, was the best way for me. When Hanyu started to challenge the quadruple Axel, he had to remove many pieces of information, and what he was left with was the person he was when he was 9 years old. I could understand how he felt."
 - Of course, Shirai is also well aware of the complexity of returning to one's roots.
 - "If people around you say, 'Remember the way you jumped back when you first began,' that doesn't help. The moment you realize yourself, 'Oh, I remember how I jumped when I first started,' then you can connect the present and the past. I think that's what happened between the All-Japan Championships and the Beijing Olympics, when he realized that he needed an absolutely clean jump for the quadruple Axel, and that was the most powerful experience for him."
 - As for his future challenges, he says:
 - "I don't know if Hanyu will think, 'I jumped it this one time, so it's okay for now' or if he will think, 'I fell, so I definitely want to make a perfect jump'. It's not my place to intervene, so I'll keep waiting to see. However, I think that when things settle down, he will start to play with himself, like trying to jump the way someone else jumps, or trying to incorporate techniques from other sports. Sometimes, there are unexpected factors that can lead to a quadruple Axel. If he continues to challenge himself, I hope he will not be too critical of himself, will not torture himself, and will enjoy working on it."
 - The world of the quadruple Axel, which Hanyu opened the door to. He talks about its value.
 - "The interesting thing about competitions is that when one person does something new, others will follow. This could be the starting point for others to try quadruple Axel and other new techniques. Just like the women's figure skater Alexandra Trusova, who was followed by several other quad jumpers. This means that Hanyu has raised the level of figure skating as a whole. He showed us not only his Olympic results, but also the importance of something much greater."
 - Hanyu left Beijing with a beautiful and strong Axel performance.
 - "A new technique is not something that can be appreciated immediately, but rather something that will be of great value in the long run. In gymnastics, even if a technique is 30 years old, the first person who performed it is sometimes still the best. 30 years from now, children will watch the footage of Hanyu and say, 'Yuzuru Hanyu was amazing 30 years ago'. I look forward to that day in the future."

(translated with DeepL:)

'"Maybe it was an unrewarding effort." The first words Hanyu said in the interview remained strong in my ears. Athletes, including myself, practice while hoping that their efforts will be rewarded, but there are some that cannot be reached no matter how much they try. I thought that Hanyu also had such a thing. In the short program (SP), he was in 8th place due to the bad luck that the blade of his skates got stuck in the ice dent on the first jump. While the score did not increase, he challenged a 4a jump (4A) that was unprecedented. You may fall and get injured, and if you fail, your score will not increase. While having various risks and conflicts, challenge without showing them. I respected Hanyu's attitude. If I think that I am in that position, I can't challenge unless I have a good deal of preparedness. Hanyu felt that he entered Beijing with a strong feeling. After that, when he heard that 4a was certified, Hanyu showed a relief expression, "Something was rewarded. Finally." Looking at that face, I was reminded that this challenge was really painful. Perhaps he may continue to challenge 4A in the future. It may be a steep road, but I think Hanyu is the only one who can succeed. I want him to go to a place that no one can reach, and I want to see the expression that he's done it. At that time, I would like to ask, "You said that you wasn't rewarded at that time, but what do you think now?" I would like to know how the process of 4a was.'

Yesterday, Hanyu, going to the awards ceremony in Megasport on crutches, showed not only his fantastic character, but also immense respect for his admirers, who after each rental give their idol their love, expressed in Winnie the Pooh.
Talent only coupled with character can make a strong athlete legendary! Only through overcoming does a champion become a champion. Who better than us, the reigning champions of Russia, to know this. He said, "My efforts were not rewarded." He has found success after many efforts, and everyone admires his efforts, even though they were not rewarded in this competition. That may not have paid off in this result, but I think it means that "hard work pays off" in life.
Great job. Congratulations and good job, Yuzuru Hanyu. '

9.3: Sumo

Hakuho Sho [Japan] [sumo wrestler, highest rank: Yokozuna]

Spoiler

https://yuzuland.tumblr.com/post/117414484612/compliments-from-yokozuna-to-yuzuru-hanyu

Speaking of “victory”, figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu performed extraordinarily well. In World Team Trophy, last major competition of this season (2014-15), Hanyu gave two excellent performances in short programme and free skating, which resulted in first in both men’s short and free, as well as third place overall for Team Japan.
I have been paying attention to him for quite a while; not only during his performance in Sochi Olympics, but also how he fights and performs in many other competitions. Finally, I was able to watch his performance in person during World Team Trophy a few days ago. Under the tensed and stressful atmosphere, Hanyu perform two beautiful and exceptional programmers, and I am really touched by his skating.
The taut atmosphere in the arena is unique for figure skating. I cannot even start to imagine how tensed it was during the Olympics and how much pressure it’d put on each and every skater. Hanyu obtained his gold medal despite the fact that he was in that situation. That is why his performance can move people and touch people’s hearts.
At any competition, I believe, there are two types of people: those who can take a chance and those who cannot. And, every winner has the ability to take a chance and that is also part of the person’s strength.
Hanyu is especially well at this aspect. Although he had suffered from accident and injuries in the beginning of the season, he was able to finish his season on a high note.
Also, even though Hanyu is only 20 years old, he has already showed his qualities and responsibilities as a champion. I, who became Yokozuna at age of 22, understand his struggle (as an Olympic champion, in terms of the responsibilities that come with it), as I have spent years to try to understand what is the responsibilities of a Yokozuna. Hanyu has showed me the strength of those who are not afraid of the responsibility of those who are on the top of the world (badly translated again! but what Yokozuna said is that strength of those who “are at point of no return” because they are the champions and they have to perform the duty and responsibility that come with it).
It is a precious and valuable experience for me to see someone, who is on the top of the world, performed his responsibilities and achieved the best results.

He was also inspired by the appearance of Japanese athletes at the recently held Beijing Olympics. In particular, he was inspired by Yuzuru Hanyu (ANA), who finished fourth in the men's figure skating competition: "I felt a lot of things as an athlete. I felt that the most beautiful athlete is the one who puts forth a performance to win. It inspired me, and I want to be an athlete who can encourage others with my performance. He vowed to give his best performance and captivate the crowd.

"#羽生結弦 left deepest impression despite not medaling, he never gave up & continued challenging the unprecedented 4A & got it certified, it's that pursuit of challenging and not giving up easily that has everyone cry+laugh when they saw him and this is what makes sports so meaningful"

Before the Sochi Olympics, she had a conversation with Yuzuru Hanyu, also born in 1994 and a consecutive winner of the men's single figure skating championship, on the Nikkan Sports newspaper (July 22, 2001).
While she herself was eliminated from the national team for the Sochi Olympics, Hanyu stood at the top of the world. His attitude toward competition is amazing.
Legend. I'm embarrassed that we had this conversation. After that, she was only a little self-conscious, but at the Pyeongchang Olympics, she joined the ranks of medalists.
A prodigy who abandoned the guise of cool and devoted himself to competition without concern for his physical appearance. There is no doubt that he has come close to becoming a legend of his age group.

"I've heard that Hanyu read many research papers while he was injured, so if I have any chance to talk with him, I want to ask him what kind of documents he had read."

‘I have written about this before. It’s about meeting figure skater, Yuzuru Hanyu. Nagano Olympics had ended and some time had passed. I went to Sendai for an event and a boy came to me to request for my autograph. Not on coloured paper but on a knapsack. After I signed, I noticed Plushenko’s signature was there as well. “I’ve got the signatures of my 2 heroes!” an innocent voice said happily. That was Yuzuru Hanyu.
At that time, his mother was with him and she said to me, “This boy has asthma. Shimizu-san also has asthma, right? But even then, you achieved a gold medal. Is it alright for this boy to continue with figure skating?“

I replied, "It’s alright. For the part where the lungs are weak, he must continue with the hard training . When he can surmount that, the hard work that he did more than other people will enable him to compete against the world. ”
After that, the next time I met Hanyu-kun was after he had won the gold medal at Sochi Olympics. I said to him, “You’re amazing! That’s why I said it’s alright, isn’t it?” Hanyu-kun looked very surprised and said, “Eh??? You remember about me???” He was so humble.‘

Amazing…… he read my articles?! “I just wrote all sorts of things selfishly, I am sorry, haha,” I apologised to him.
Then I saw the PyeongChang Olympic gold medal for the first time. Seeing it for real, it was so shiny–
The back of the medal is cool too!! Behind the medal is Hanyu-kun. And inside Hanyu-kun is something really cool too!!‘
