General Yuzuru Chat

Does TCC do PR for their athletes in general? Yuna was much earlier, before the reputation of the club skyrocketed, but I don’t remember Brian hyping her skills much.
My memory is faulty, I don’t remember they saying much abt their other skaters programs before comps, trying to think what their mode was before Pyeongchang. I’m guessing is their style. And Yuzu is particularly private (in Toronto especially), there’s a whole tension with japanese media abt him boasting himself so he would probably prefer to keep expectations under his control.

A good PR department would work wonders for his image in the West, that’s true, but then there would be media competition lol
The grip he has in China is crazy (and is getting me slightly worried, will admit), so I wonder if part of his charm is being perceived as an underdog fighting a system, lone warrior, this kind of stuff.

Off topic, apart from FaOI news Nobu hasn’t posted anything right. Gets me just a tad worried.

Oooof Yuzu with a PR team (that has his best interest in mind) would be formidable. He would be bigger than he is today and probably attract more jealousy (from fellow skaters and their fans) lol

Has he ever explicitly talked about it? I mean I understand it, it is coherent with his asceticism, pure concentration on sport and it emphasizes his authenticity that draws so many people to him.

But I agree that perhaps a subtle in style but still existing PR team would help to get the message through, to shift the attention to these amazing details like above, with the 3A. This would help him to achieve his goal, and he certainly is goal-oriented.

Well, Tracy (and TCC in general) does a good amount of PR for Jason. Meanwhile they were radio silence for Yuzu most of the time and with some of Brian’s interviews, I admit, I rather them not to talk at all. :doh:I mean those interviews after Saitama and GPF2019 were just….forget it.

I wonder if Brian and Tracy being under IMG plays a role into how they talk about Yuzu to the press and them following the narratives too. To me, FS is a very small community and it seems they all have reached this secret agreement to present Yuzu as “a thing from past”. No one except Didier (corruption knows corruption) has talked explicitly and loudly about the judging against Yuzu and the quality of his skating and jumping is not usually discussed thoroughly by skaters (active or retired) or coaches. It’s quite shocking considering his level and accomplishments. But that’s how corruption and racism can completely control and lead a very small community.

I don't know where to respond more. I asked for help on unsubscribing to this forum about four days ago or so on the forum thread "How do I" and sent an email to PlanetHanyu Staff asking to unscubscribe to this forum. I have not received a response to either enquiry. Is this a difficult question? I don't want to be a member on this forum or blog any more. Please delete me. I entreat you.

Its all seems so long ago, but IIRC Brian was pretty popular in South Korea and did a lot of interviews there and even performed (ish),

He really seemed to eat up the second hand attention of being a coach of a famous skater. But then that relationship went in the toilet. And again, IIRC, the one with Adam Rippon didn't end well either. I think since then Orser has tried to be a bit more circumspect. Unless it involves his favorite son, Javi, of course. Then he doesn't hesitate to come riding to the rescue.

I'll give Orser the benefit of the doubt and say maybe he's respecting Yuzu's privacy but I also think he doesn't let himself get that emotionally invested in his students these days. They want skating advice? Cool, cool, cool. Otherwise he's more hands off, imho. Probably for the best.

The juxtaposition to coaches like Lambiel (who praises his students to the heavens) is quite interesting. That said, knowing how independent and determined Yuzuru is, if he were unsatisfied with the team I'm sure he would have officially cut ties with them a long time ago now.

Just seen a tweet by a Nfthan fan saying N has dominated FS for 4 seasons and should get more recognition and interest!

I laughed a bit, then had a bit of a think about it, and actually, 2 of the last 4 years have been dominated by a virus, a global pandemic, where top skaters had much less opportunity to compete at all or against each other, and some skaters, like Yuzu for example, could not train at all in their usual environment and lost all their usual support systems. Some skaters were very wary of Covid and others less so - for Yuzuru, he (uniquely amongst top men skaters I think) had to consider his own health given his respiratory condition as well as his public health duty. That caused him some anxiety I think, and also maybe  influenced his decision re GP series 20/21 so he had less "match" experience. He also had to manage the 10 yr anniversary of the 2011 disaster with a couple of biggish earthquakes thrown in just before WC21, all significant in terms of managing trauma. Then I realised that in the other 2 years, Yuzu was either recovering from injury or injured...so the Universe, hand in hand with ISU USSF JSF, really made it much easier for N (though do recognise the virus gave rise to an increase in hatred/racism towards Asian Americans which I am sure N will have been affected by), and very very hard for Yuzu over the last quad.  Maybe we all know this already, but I hadnt fully realised it until I put it all together following reading the Nfthan tweet!

I agree that Orser said some questionable things in some of his interviews. And that he could work more on his PR skills. But to give him some credit - there were many many very nice interviews in which he praised Yuzu a lot. So it is not black-and-white. Here are some random examples of nice quotes:

  • 'I have to say he is the greatest of all time' - 2018, Olympics channel
  • 'When Yuzu does them (quads), they are the best' - it was some video interview in 2020(?) but cannot remember which one
  • he though that Yuzu's PCS for SP in Stockholm were low - 2021, interview for Trace of Stars DeepL translation
  • 'When you see him on the ice, there's something special. There's something about his speed, his flow, his 3A, even the quads. When you see him with other guys you can see the difference. It's hard to find the words, but there's something special about his freedom when he skates.' 2017,  kyodonews

  • 'Yuzuru has the ultimate beauty of powerful but effortless skating,' / 'There is the intrinsic beauty of skating, not just jumping' - 2020, aera

  • 'He just keeps challenging himself. Even being a two-time Olympic medalist, he’s not ready to just ride the wave. He’s trying to create wave. And it’s pretty cool for me to witness it. I’m not fueling it, I’m just there for him. It’s been nice, it’s a real privilege to be with him.' - 2018, insideskating

  • 'If anybody can do it(4A), it will be him (Yuzu)' 2018, JWBlades interview

  • 'Never underestimate Mr. Hanyu' 2018, video link

  • 'He has some remarkable jumps and is probably the best jumper in the world. It's quality choreography, spins, speed, there is something about how he fills up the rink.' - right before Olympics 2018, kyodonews

  • 'If he can skate like he did at All-Japan Championships, I think it is enough to win' - 2022 newsweek

Yeah but look at the time of most of these quotes by Orser. Mostly 2018. The time Yuzu won his second OGM. During that phase (PYC2018) Orser gave his best interviews. When Yuzu wins, Orser compliments. When Yuzu doesn't win (due to the systematic corruption), Orser doesn't usually defend him but instead does those very questionable interviews. Tracy hasn't spoken or done any kind of visible PR for Yuzu after 2019 too. It's very clear to me that TCC doesn't do PR for Yuzu, especially after 2019, when he actually needed them the most while the system has been forcing him to step down.

I'm not criticizing TCC or Brian btw. I'm just answering the fanyu who rightfully said those difficult details in Yuzu's performance should be highlighted by his coaches or PR thingies. But I'm like: has TCC done PR for Yuzu after 2019?

I don't think the role of the coach is to do PR for their skaters or to hype them up in front of others. I don't think they have the media training to do that too. Brian, from the interviews I have heard from him, supports the skating goal of the skaters. He wants them to be focused on skating. He has previously also said that he knows Jun takes on a lot of TV commercials and has done acting, etc as a kid, but he has expressed that it would be better to tone down some of that so it doesn't interfere with his skating. This all makes sense to me. As an athlete and skater, their primary goal is to train to win, to push the sport. Most other things are secondary. Brian also seems to be the one on the TCC team who is very focused on strategies (e.g. points, layout, skills, jumps). Whenever he is talking about Yuzu, he has always said that Yuzu has his own ideas of what he wants to do, that when he gets onto the ice, Yuzu likes to have all eyes on him. Rather than having people talk about his details of the performance, Yuzu seem to prefer to show us the details of his performance. I see it more as the role of the commentators to be highlighting such details to us, which disappointingly, few commentators seem to be doing. The CBC does an ok job, but the least said about the NBC or ISU commentators, the better.
