Thread of 'Yuzuru Hanyu' mentions on TV/movies/books

(Add-on) 2026 Japanese drama - "Reborn" Episode 4: "Before the Sochi Olympics, I was asked to produce an ad with a figure skater. When I was unsure who to pick, this man suggested Yuzuru Hanyu." Episode 6: *Flashback from ep 2* -
Hmm, but it seems in 2018 the short and free were on consecutive days too, right?
-
Interesting, I didn't know that. Sochi olympics is actually where I started being interested in watching figure skating (Yuzuru's short had a lot to do with that), but at that time I surely didn't pay attention to how much time skaters have between short and free. BTW I think his fall on the opening 4S in the free should not overshadow the perfect 4T that came after. Surely one of the best quads of the event, if not the best.
-
Also the schedule for the men in Sochi was dreadful. The short program and the free skate were held on consecutive days with no rest day in-between. The short program for the top men didn't finish until about 11 pm then they had to do the press conference so got back to their accomodation in the early hours of the free skate day. They then had to be up early for practice. Terrible scheduling. I think it was something to do with the team event timing ( the first time it had been held).

To put that skate in perspective, go watch the whole Sochi men's final, if you can find it. It had more crashes and blow-ups than a demolition derby. And the competitors who managed to skate clean all had low scores coming out of the short program so couldn't really catch up. Yuzu's skate was as good as he could do on that day and it was enough to win. And that's how the sport works. It wasn't "trash", which would imply he didn't try his best. He put in the effort and deserved the win, it was just a rough day on the ice for everyone

Certainly we have seen cleaner performances than this, yet he is always so beautiful to watch and much more exciting than the rest of the skaters. After his second fall, he must have been frustrated and used his frustration as a motivation to find himself again in seconds. Times like these remind us that he is is just a human, not perfect but even more lovable. PS: His Biellman spin was breathtaking!🌷
-
Certainly not trash. I think it was just a kuyashiii~ skate and not many want to rewatch it maybe, but so many of the men in Sochi fell and made mistakes so I really dislike the narrative that he was lucky to win that. For me, despite the mistakes, we could see that Yuzu was quick to regain composure, he didn't let that affect him and completed his skate the best he could. He's always a fighter in that sense.

Guys, do you agree that despite the falls Yuzuru's free skate at the Sochi olympics was a very valuable skate that is worth rewatching and in which are many things to love? Cuz I've seen people (who like Yuzu otherwise) say that the performance he gave in Sochi free skate was pretty much trash. I rarely post here but I take this as a safe space where I can feel that I'm not the only one who finds value in lots of aspects of Yuzuru's skating, not just in his fully clean performances.

Thanks, Jenn, for finding the book and the translation. I began from Chapter 5 and haven't finished it yet. I love this book. I felt it was better organized than Yuzu's biography, at least with more details. His biography is more like plain transcriptions of his interviews, and this book digs deeper and connects everything better, more like telling a story.

@Yuzurella Where did this photo come from? What book is it from? Here's a compilation for Yuzuru's 4th anniversary : the song lyrics and Yuzu's lyrics are translatable.

Some Random Thoughts After Studying Yuzuru for 3 Months
Martina replied to databeej2w's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
Over the past few years, I've read numerous books and newspaper articles, and compiled countless statistics, and what I've seen is disturbing. And the ISU does nothing, or does too little, because the people who run the federation have their own vested interests, and honest and competent judges struggle to get their work done. In 2021, as soon as I read the names of the judges who would be judging the World Championships, I complained about Salome Chigogidze's presence, stating clearly that she was one of the most biased judges around. A few months later, the ISU suspended Chigogidze for national bias, specifically for the scores awarded at that World Championships. If I knew before the competition that she was biased, how could the ISU not know? Why was she allowed to falsify that result? And why was she back judging after just a year? So when someone tells me they trust the judges' scores because they're more competent than us, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. There are many interesting statistics to be done, although unfortunately, for some time now, if you don't have a paid subscription, you can only see the top ten results. With a little imagination, however, you can get a few more answers, because the order can be by score, BV, GOE, PCS, chronological, from highest to lowest, or reversed. If you search for all skaters, you can request the result by "single skater," which will give you the best score for everyone. You can select the season, nationality, competition, short program, or freeskate... by combining the results together, you can see more than just 10 lines.
