Update on the evacuation of Ukrainian skaters:

So most of skaters mentioned earlier are safe, except Ivan Shmuratko – trying to evacuate him from Kyiv (it becomes more and more difficult, as escaping by car becomes more dangerous). Maksym Nikitin and Oleksandra Nazarova are safe now too, and trying to get to the border and go to the Worlds.

There also were issues with permissions to leave country for males (males 18-60 are prohibited to leave country). Mykyta Pohorielov and Ivan Khobta stuck on the border, because UFSF didn't issue the proper documents, so they were stopped at the border. As of today the paperwork issues should be resolved though.

Taisiia fled Ukraine to Estonia with only two pairs of skates and a costume. She is now staying at a hotel in Tallinn with her mum and her coach and is training at the Tondiraba ice rink.

Olena Kopanishina watches her 16-year-old daughter Taisiia Spesivtseva train under the guidance of her coach Marina Amirkhanova at the Tondiraba ice rink in Tallinn.

Taisiia is a member of the Ukrainian national figure skating team and continues her training in Tallinn, where all three women arrived from Ukraine about a week ago.

Marina is one of the coaches of the Ukrainian national figure skating team.

The trio is staying at the Hotel Dzingel in Tallinn's Männiku district. Their accommodation is free of charge and they eat three meals a day.

-"We also received free bus tickets from the City of Tallinn," Olena says.

Olena, Taisiia and Marina are Ukrainian war refugees who found life in their home country too dangerous. But they did not come to Estonia together. Marina drove her car from her hometown of Kyiv first to Romania, then through Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland to Lithuania and finally through Latvia to Estonia.

Olena and Taisiia travelled from Kyiv first to Lviv in western Ukraine and then walked almost 70 kilometres to the Polish border, where they caught a bus to Finland.

-But we decided to stay here in Tallinn, as this is a familiar city for us. Taisiia has been here for training and Marina for coaching and competitions," says Olena.

Olena and Taisiia had also been living in Kyiv for the last six months because of Taisiia's hobby. According to Olena, Taisiia is aiming for the top of the world in her sport.

-We come from Kharkiv, which has now been bombed to the ground. The Russians are shelling the city with big guns and bombing from planes. It is shocking. My parents also lived in Kharkiv and are now on their way here. They are 73 years old," Olena says.

-I had a birthday just before we left. In Kyiv I ventured to the shop, prepared some food, ate, and we returned to the bomb shelter. You had to be under cover all the time if you didn't want to die. Several of our friends have been killed and wounded in the last few days.

Olena's husband was also in Kyiv, but left in the opposite direction to his family.

-He is now at the front in Kharkiv. I don't know how he is doing there.

The female trio has little with them in Tallinn except Taisiia's skates. That's all they had time to take with them.

-At the Polish border, we were looked at a bit strangely when they noticed that all we had with us were two pairs of skates and a racing suit.

Taisiia says she is enjoying Tallinn, especially because skating takes her mind off the war and her longing for her father.

-"I keep going to school all the time. I study remotely with the help of a computer at a Ukrainian school," she says.

Like zombies

Marina says the hardest thing about Tallinn is that no one knows what will happen next. She, Olena and Taisiia have been promised that they can stay at the Dzingel Hotel until the end of March.

-What happens after that? We don't know. "Uncertainty makes you numb," Marina says.

-We can't go back to Ukraine yet, that's for sure. It would be good if Europe had a common plan for the Ukrainian refugees, but there is none, despite the fact that there are millions of us.

Financially, the refugees are also struggling in Estonia, as the Estonian state has not promised them any financial support.

They have to live on their savings and quickly find work in Estonia.

Marina has already been asked to continue her work as a coach in Tallinn and Olena expects to find work in the hotel and tourism sector, where she has also worked in Ukraine. Her profession is, ironically, a teacher of Russian literature.

But why then did Russia invade Ukraine?

Marina says she was part of the Ukrainian team at the recently concluded Chinese Olympics and noticed there how Russians' attitude to the rest of the world has changed.

-"They were proud and on their own, like zombies. I wasn't very surprised that they then invaded our country," Marina says.

-What we have seen now is just the beginning. This is the start of the third world war. Finland too should be particularly vigilant, because you don't even have NATO as a bulwark. Russia's aim is to restore the borders and power of its past empire.

🇺🇦 Our skaters have overcome a very difficult path - physically and morally - to perform at this year's World Championships in Montpellier, France. Almost immediately after returning from the Olympics, they faced a full-scale war, explosions, and hiding in a shelter instead of training. However, the team managed to get permission to travel abroad and at the last moment to escape to the competition, where the team will be represented in three of the four disciplines.

We know how difficult it is now for those who have remained in Ukraine to think about sport and find time to watch it between sirens or, worse, shelling. But if you have the opportunity to be distracted and cheer for Ukraine and on the sports front as well, it will be extremely valuable 💙💛

In addition, thanks to the efforts of the figure and general sports community of Ukraine and the world at the championship, we will not see the teams of aggressor countries - Russia and Belarus - who have caused and continue to cause irreparable pain to our country while their skaters openly support the war on earth their former colleagues (more about this in the message @ivandaniluk).

🇺🇦 Ukraine will be represented at the World Cup by:

🔹 Men: Ivan Shmuratko (@ v4no__) - Kyiv
🔹 Dances: Alexandra Nazarova (@aleksandralfs) and Maxim Nikitin (@maxxxnik) - the hero city of Kharkiv
🔹 Couples: Sofia Golichenko (@sofia_fk) and Artem Darensky (@artem_darenskij) - Dnipro

Anastasia Shabotova was expelled from the national team of Ukraine by order of the IMC

By order of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, figure skater Anastasia Shabotova was released from the staff of the national team.

This was announced by Vice President of the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation (UFSF) Danil Amirkhanov .

Answering the questions received by the UFSF from the media, Danil Amirkhanov also explained: “The federation does not dismiss or exclude from the national team. She proposes to the Ministry (Youth and Sports), which makes the decision. "

It will be recalled that Anastasia Shabotova liked the Instagram post of a well-known Putin supporter, Russian Yevgeny Plushenko, in which he supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
