Skating on the Planet

Every sort of foot pain I think is normal for people who don't skate often. When I'm with friends, I hear the most about feet pain, ankle pain, and hip pain within about an hour :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

Yeah don't get me started, I think 30% of the friends I've brought skating ended up with a serious injury or something. In a couple cases, serious pain + cast needed + 3 months of no walking :unsure2: I'm not really sure what happened, like I turn around for two seconds and BAM they're being carried off the ice by the rink staff.

Oh wow I have never had friends injured before... Worst I've had was my little sister hitting her knee a little hard and me not being able to pick her up, which led to my coach having to get her up off the ice :13877886:A few minutes later she was back on the ice and the whole thing was more embarrassing for me than anything else because my coach witnessed the very reason I will never become a coach in my future.... Never any real injuries beyond my own, though :tumblr_inline_mzx91uuLRI1r8msi5:

I had my new blades comes in the other day and I don't think I'm gonna get them mounted until I get new boots, but I'm still :tumblr_inline_mm2wbaeqQM1qz4rgp: I can't stop randomly picking one up and just holding it because I'm just so happy and they didn't cost me an arm and a leg which is also a bonus [so here's to maybe getting a similar deal on boots lol]. I'm super excited for when I do actually mount them and use them and like Ah! :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

I'm an expensive high end gay and only settled for the best blades.... and honestly, I'm looking at.... expensive things, again, I'm actually looking at Edea Pianos if only they weren't so damn expensive

Wow...nice. Gold seal revs, you need to update us how those feel once you get them mounted. =) You're up to doubles or triples if you're going for Pianos?

Also, is there a difference between Pattern 99 and Gold Seals? Not just the stuff we find online, but is one easier for spinning and one for jumping, etc? Like I had one coach here say she prefers the MK gold stars over the Wilson Gold Seal, because the Gold Star spin rocker is even more noticeable, so you get even faster spins.

Personally, my dream shoes+blade combo is probably a risport Royal, and a Pattern 99 Rev.

same (and i have the royals) but i am on a 7' rocker right now and i don't know if i should go with MK Professionals Gold Star (looks like the JW revs but are not JW, obvs) which also have a 7' rocker or get Yuzu's Pattern 99s. Because I really want Yuzu's blades but I dont know if I want to have to get used to 8' rockers. Not even sure if that would be an issue, I'm just a little paranoid :13877886:

I have doubles sans a good 2lz and a 2a and am starting on triples :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:But there's also a large chance that, if I can gather the money, I'm going to go to my dealer (that makes it sound like drugs) for the blades and be at the mercy of what boots he can sell that won't run my pocket dry :13877886:

Pattern 99s don't have as large of a spin rocker, so the gold seal are better for spins. Pattern 99s also have a larger toe pick which, depending on who you are, is a good thing or a bad thing. Personally, I'm the dumbass who's tripping on my toe pick, I'm praying maybe this issue will be a little less prominent... {But I also sometimes have issues in actually using my toe pick for whatever reason on combos off of an axel so who knows really, maybe a smaller toe pick will be a curse to me).

I'd share if I could, they're so nice to just look at and hold :tumblr_inline_mzx922J8H21r8msi5:I don't think I've ever held such a light blade...

Well I started skating on giant straight toe picks and flat 8" rocker blades, and after many years of not skating, come back to find I have to skate on 7 inch rockers with cross cut picks. That was an adjustment period, and I hated the feeling of toe jumps because they never felt...solid. I frankly, can't wait to graduate out of cross-cut toepicks and 7 inch rockers.

Rinkmate of mine just got his Edea Ice Flys and Gold Star Revs in Jan. He said it took him about 2 weeks to adjust to the blades, and he still hasn't fully regaind his forward upright change foot to backspin combo back yet. He said something about the rocker and toepick is making it harder for him to hit the backspin.

@asahi: thanks for the info. So for me I guess Pattern99's it is. I'm currently on Cornation Aces, so I guess the adjustment won't be that severe. My rinkmate dislikes the profile of my cornation aces, it just looks too flat to him. Apparently I also center my spins a bit differently than him, supposedly I'm a bit lower on my foot. He was MK Professional and found the switch to gold star pretty easy.

Argh, so does this basically mean don't change the size of your toe picks and rocker? Because you'll never adjust to them? :13877886: So I *should* get the MK Gold Stars, then. Ah, well, I wanted to support Yuzu by buying his blades  but I can settle for ones that look like this (the parabolic look is so cool btw)

Eh, not really. Everyone has a different adjustment rate and period. I did adjust, after about a week, but that's what I consider slow?  And even Cor-Aces and Pattern99 are different. Cornationa aces are 7" and cross cut, while Pattern is 8" and straight toe. But I recall from some drawing from Paramount blades, that they both have 3 rocker segments (2 for spins/jumps, 1 for basic gliding), whereas Gold star, gold seal, MK pro (most MK blades actually), just have 2 rocker sections (1 for spins/jumps, 1 for gliding). http://www.askmredge.com/blog/2013/03/blade-radius-rocker-explained/

Rinkmate and I were comparing spinning between his MK pros and my cor aces, and it seems for cor ace I had to be more precise. Also, he always said he was closer to the toepicks when he centers, while I was further back (more ball of foot than him).

Thanks for the information, it's very helpful. My spins are still quite temperamental so I think small changes will likely throw me off for a while. I should probably try not to make too many changes...if I don't want to relearn everything :13877886:

Well I'm only going to consider changing my blade+boot after I hit axels. =) Might be a year, cause my coach has me working on crossovers (she said the underpush was too weak for my level)-yep, when you can jump flips but you get demoted back to crossovers practice. :13877886:

It depends...rinkmate said it took him 2 weeks to fully adjust for his new gold stars, but he was back to jumping axels within 4 hours of getting his new blades. So who knows...according to him, he can't quite figure out the change foot to backspin yet, but all other spins are easier, footwork is funny but faster (he's having issues with the dovetail blades), and his jumps have increased. I was trying to get him to try pattern99's, but he declined to be an even more obvious fanyu, and said something about how to shorter blade scares him a bit.
