[2022] Grand Prix Espoo

So, this is the most contentious bit: She claims that an athlete can only grow when he/she doesn't feel like the only star in the group, but has competition in the group. Fair enough, she cites Brian Orser's 2015 team as a good example and claims he doesn't not find it necessary to give in to the ever-changing world of stars, since Brian had two male star skaters, Hanyu and Fernandez, back then.

And then comes this:

Quote

Though when it comes to Hanyu, he regularly switches on his 'star' mode. For instance, he gives no interviews to Japanese journalists. It can get ridiculous: the other day the representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun asked a European journalist to speak to Hanyu, since Yuzuru can now speak English quite well. 'Are you crazy?' -my colleague asked incredulously - 'You want me to talk to Hanyu in a foreign language he does not know very well for you to translate it back into his first language?' Then it emerged that there are certain difficulties in communicating with the athlete which can be summed up by the following phrase: 'He acts mighty biggity, (he's arrogant and inapproachable, literally, in Russian "you can't ride up to him on a one-eyed goat).

Yuzuru is known as an athlete with idiosyncrasies in Canada too. For instance, wherever he goes, he brings not only his mother, but also his fengshui expert, whose recommendations he uses all the time. Rumour has it, though, that it bodes only ill. For example, in the Grand Prix event in Lethbridge he flopped his short programme altogether and came sixth in it. According to the Japanese journalists, his inner balance was completely shattered when he stepped out on the ice and spotted a dead fly on the ice.

But Fernandez's presence in the group makes Hanyu work, and work hard. When within that very interview I mentioned, the journalist asked the Olympic champion what he would like to do if he got a month-long vacation, Hanyu thought for a long time and then said: "I find it impossible that I should not skate for a month"

So, summing up: Hanyu behaves like an arrogant git, does some weird things while on the ice, and his hard work is all down to Javi's presence, otherwise he wouldn't have been working as hard.

Thanks for sharing, that was so crazy and funny :rofl3:

In Spain some years ago there was also an article in a serious newspaper describing Kikuchi-sensei as a sorcerer who cursed other skaters, as well as stating that Yuzu is an antisocial freak.
