i'm so proud of Yuzu!! Selected as one of Asia-Pacific's U30 young leaders! 

 

The submission is not simple, one has to write the contributions in detail to be reviewed. There is no pre-selected candidates for voting here (mentioning this due to recent AIPS issue). Plus, the list was unveiled during the APEC summit where government leaders attended too.

It's so obvious that the ISU has a problem on their hands. I could see it when I went to Worlds in Montreal - the arena was at best, half full, and probably a third of the audience were friends and family and teammates of the skaters themselves. Very insular, honestly. 

 

I invited some friends of mine who live in Montreal to join me for a day of the competition. These are people who used to figure skate, so they have an interest. When they checked the one-day ticket price, they balked and wouldn't come. And they had none of the other expenses an Worlds attendee from out of town would have. They didn't recognize any of the skaters competing, so it was easy for them to convince themselves not to go ( to be fair, these are people who probably would have turned their noses up at seeing Yuzu, too - they were looking for big Canadian stars to watch. Sorry, but Elvis quit competing 30 years ago 😅) . However, they did get interested in watching the practice sessions at the Verdun rink, which were only $10 for the day. 

 

The other thing I noticed is that there's a LOT of grey-haired golf clappers in the remaining audience that still attend... people who seem to think watching figure skating is like going to the ballet, who get p*ssed off if they're forced to witness anything so unseemly as an excited fan cheering for a favorite skater. Those folks would be better off watching the event on TV, at home in their jammies, tucked up with a cup of cocoa on the couch. 😒

 

So the problem has a few components:

 

1. Without star power like Yuzu had, it's difficult to attract fans outside the regular circles of figure skating

 

2. The regular circles of figure skating are a reliable audience,  but small and getting older

 

3. Ticket price is a barrier to casual fans/passersby who might otherwise check it out.

 

4. The way ISU behaved towards Yuzu with regard to scoring, after 2018, has had the effect of driving away a huge pool of potential future audience. From a marketing perspective, they should have bent over backwards to keep him competing as long as possible.

I think you made a couple of good points. Simply from a business perspective, supporting Yuzu as the greatest star of figure skating by far should've been a no-brainer. But instead they low-balled and tried to push him out as much as they could starting 2018. It's only due to Yuzu's sheer love for the sport and competitions that he gave them four more years of full arenas and great popularity and abundant flow of money into their pockets.

 

Imagine someone having a goose that lays golden eggs fly into their house and just chasing it away. Unbelievable...

ISU's approach seems to be to chase away the golden goose in of favor of a silver or bronze one. It's like they think they only have room for one goose at a time

Well said, and it's even more of a pity because inevitably there comes a point in the career of all professional sports people, when sadly they bid good bye to competition. However, many sports people also leave the competitive arena with a view to continue with a connection to their sport and fans are delighted to see sports personalities return as fondly regarded coaches, commentators, sports writers and the many roles that a popular sports person may be suited for. 

In Yuzu's case, even if he had not chosen one of the established professional roles listed above, there was still scope to maintain a mutually agreeable link with him by inviting him to appear at the gala. Some professional skaters have performed in a post competition gala fairly recently.

 

Our beloved Yuzu is now in a league entirely of his own and fans who have continued to follow Yuzu and those who encounter Yuzu's wonderful skating and become new fans are entering a very brave new world of superlative skating performance and ice story concept and production.

Fan affection is not the same as high regard and being valued by a sports person's professional body, but it would be lovely to imagine that fans cherish Yuzu in a manner that makes him very pleased with everything he has achieved and feel the positive energy that emanates from the fan community.

 

Looking forward to the fabulous experience which will be soon revealed to us through 'Echoes of Life'

I agree with everything that's been written here 😊

Unfortunately for me I only discovered our brilliant Yuzuru in February 2021. As soon as I saw him skate I fell in love with his skating. I have watched him skate every day since that day in February.

Of course I had never seen anyone skate so beautifully. He was one with the music and every move he made on the ice and every gesture he made was exquisite.

As I watched Yuzuru's programs on YouTube and elsewhere to catch up with his skating career since he was a child I began to appreciate not only his incredible skills as a figure skater and his elegance on the ice but his beauty.

His physical beauty is almost overwhelming and his presence on the ice is indeed mesmerising. He has so much charisma.

Finally it is his personal qualities of humility, generosity and kindness that continue to make me love and admire him.

Of course what he is accomplishing now as a professional athlete is astonishing! I am enjoying every show that I am able to see.

I also really enjoy being a member of his YouTube channel. He gives all of his fanyus so much. His passion  for his craft is extraordinary.

I have sent my birthday wishes to Yuzu here at Planet Hanyu and I would like to thank the Administrators for all that they do to keep us up to date with the extraordinary person that he is.

This is a calendar of events on June 2024 : all Yuzu and is friends 

 

 

I wanted to go see Kevin A at the Finlandia Trophy : it's really "bleak plain" no atmosphere like in Yuzu's time..... plus with a cancelled gala!!!!!! In France, we say : "the goose that lays the golden eggs" 

 

I read that there are pros who participated in post-competition galas : YES I saw it at the NHK one (K Tanaka and Satoko M) but the most surprising thing, in the middle arrive the silver medalists of the Japanese team (with the Silver / Bronze group) : BUT who is missing here? Yuzu who could not participate ..... who "arrived too late" ...., in addition there were a lot of comments, like : "where is THE GOAT Yuzuru Hanyu, he was part of the Japanese team" but "strangely" the next day, they had "disappeared"

Thank you for this wonderful edit. I enjoyed it very much! It reminded me of how busy Yuzuru always is.

Watching it I was also reminded of my very real concern for Yuzuru when I saw the bandage over his right eye when he performed in FOI. Thankfully he is ok but I know it was very frightening for all of us.

Of course besides doing everything in the edit he has been skating at "his rink" in Sendai. Night after night from midnight until 2.00 am. Alone. Creating masterpieces for us and making history in his career as the professional athlete and figure skater he is.

Has anyone ever been so self motivated and self disciplined as our beloved Yuzu?

And every one of his shows is sold out! The tickets are only available by lottery!

Yuzuru is a legend, unique, astonishing  ...

I'm 75 now and my health isn't good enough for me to travel to see him 😪 but I'm waiting patiently to purchase my "ticket" to watch the livestream of "Echoes of Life". I know it will be fantastic!
