As far as the injury statement goes, I think it's relevant that he needed to submit a medical report in order to withdraw from WTT. Of course I'm not saying that the injury isn't serious or that Yuzu or his team would lie or exaggerate, just that Yuzu knows full well that if the statement about his injury were too vague or didn't sound serious enough, there would be some people who would be rushing to criticize him and say that he could have done WTT if he really wanted to. So, the report emphasizes not only the injury, but the fact that he naturally has inflammation in the area thanks to all of his hard training. I don't think any of that was actually news to Yuzu and I'm sure he has a good rehab plan in place, since he's unfortunately a rehabbing expert now.

Not to derail the discussion about the book, but I want to bring the charity donation idea back up too because I think that's such a great idea and something unique that Yuzu would really appreciate, and it's something that can be done in addition to a book or any other gifts. So the first and biggest question is...where should the donation go?

A coaching change would probably be best but it seems unlikely to me because Shoma has always been pretty adamant about staying with his current coaches, and about continuing to use Mihoko's choreography for all of his programs even though a lot of people have suggested that he branch out and work with other people. But at a bare minimum he should be thinking about spending as much time as possible working with Alex Ouriashev this summer.
-
What does anything he says lately mean? The other part of this that I enjoyed was him going on about the super big "coaching secret" of why he didn't let Nathan jump during one of the practices, only to have the reporter, who hadn't even asked about it in the first place, immediately guess exactly what the secret was

I think this is very accurate. It's like those fans that many of us have observed on other forums or wherever who have much more in depth and passionate discussions about skaters and competitions from decades ago than they do about anything that's happening currently. Not that there's anything wrong with discussing those things, but there's often a vibe that many of these people wish that everything about skating was still exactly the way it was back then. And then of course there's also the contingent of people who just don't want to accept the fact that the GOAT of the sport is Japanese.

Very little of what Raf says makes sense from the perspective of good PR strategy. Why would you make a comment that implies that your star skater is so mentally weak that he would be unsettled and thrown off his game by Winnie the Pooh?

I think that we can easily do both. Since things like shirts, mugs, and tote bags are pretty easy and inexpensive to do, we could even do a little care package of Planet Hanyu merch. (Like an upgraded version of when you go to a conference or other event and get a swag bag full of random stuff.) Since we know he likes keeping extensive notes on his skating, we could even send a custom PH notebook...or just send him this one: https://www.redbubble.com/people/wanungara/works/15207899-my-plans-for-world-domination-spiral-notebook

This is hilarious because earlier in the season they were praising Yuzu, his programs, and his costumes, and bashing Nathan. They're so transparent, and also clearly salty about Brian unfollowing them. From what I gather, ever since that happened they've been going in on TCC skaters.

I think this is a really great idea and it's something that we could consider doing in addition to something like a photobook. With our strength in numbers we could make an impactful gift even if each person who was able only gave a tiny amount.

Can you imagine? "Dearest Yuzu, to show our support and gratitude to you, please enjoy this 75 page printout of comments about the irresistibility of your waist and the origin of the phrase 'Purple Pants of Sin'."

Also, instead of strictly a photo book, in theory it could be like a Best of Planet Hanyu book too featuring some of the best comments from the forum.

True, but things like shirts aren't too difficult to do, so in theory we could do both. Planet Hanyu care package with photo book, shirt, and mug for his zunda hot chocolate

On the stones topic, since I mentioned pearls in the other thread (since some world's finest pearls come from Japan), I'll also bring over the quote about their symbolism. I do like the idea of something along those lines, although I also get the argument that this may be something too personal to choose for someone else.

There's also the idea of a bracelet or necklace since we know he likes those, and that also gives the opportunity for the use of engraving and/or materials with symbolism. Also, I have to say that I love that this thread is four pages already

On the earphones idea, instead of trying to figure out which actual earphones the world's leading expert on earphones might like, maybe a fancy custom earphone case? With a message engraved?

Reading the comments about gold vs silver and medal or no medal, what randomly came to my mind was Japanese pearls. They do come in gold...and Yuzu loves bracelets...and the symbolism...
-
We should give him his own version of the Plushy-style "platinum medal" Seriously though, I feel like he's not the type to be into the idea of 'compensation medals', so my opinion is that the best thing would be something that could just symbolically represent the love and respect and gratitude of the fans.
-
It definitely sounds like "Yuzu's doing team trophy" to me, but not sure about what's said after that. But I guess we'll know for sure in a few hours.
-
They might not, but on the other hand I wouldn't put it past USFS at all to have Shoma there in hopes of packing the place with Japanese fans, knowing full well that as long as Nathan skates decently they can just inflate his scores enough to make sure that Shoma has no chance of beating him.
-
Current info is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019–20_ISU_Grand_Prix_of_Figure_Skating I know Yuzu had mentioned this season that he thought it helped him that his first grand prix event was slightly later than normal, so I wonder if that will factor into his preferences for next season.
-
Yep, and the flip side of that, the archaic constructs of masculinity that cause some people to stereotype fs as a girly sport and male skaters as not manly enough, and, to bring this back to Yuzu, the same nonsense that causes some NA fans and even commentators to make snarky comments about Yuzu's skating style and his willingness to rock sparkles and pink ruffles with zero regard for their rigid standards about what men should wear and how they should skate.
-
The skater that I really fear for a bit at this point is Alysa Liu, because while they're doing the most with Nathan at this point, I think that what they really want and feel like they need to revitalize skating in the US is a new superstar in ladies, and she's our only real hope at the moment. I hope they give her enough breathing room to develop at her own pace.
-
I totally agree with this and as an American, this is something that I really wish the USFS and American media would get. Nathan will never be Yuzu, and in terms of American skaters, he's not Michelle Kwan 2.0 either. That era is over. All they're really accomplishing by trying to force this is creating a backlash against Nathan that may come back to bite them in the end.
