That reminds me when some people expressed concern that Origin layout with 4Lo and 3Lo was a zayak risk. All I could think of was: "This is Yuzu, he won't zayak. He thinks too much to make a mistake like that. If he pops the 4Lo, he'll replace the 3Lo with something else." He did zayak once, a long time ago, but never again since then, I think.

And there's Nobu who was named the Zayak King rip, who often managed to get enough marks docked off to keep him from podiums, despite his jumping ability. No wonder he thinks Yuzu is amazing.

During the FS at CoR? I think the 4T-1lo-3S was his new planned combo, he did it during the 6-minute warmup, didn't he? I think he did because I remember realizing in that moment that the sequence was definitely not going to be there. I think his muscle memory kinda confused him a little after that when he popped his 3A into 1A. Right after he landed the popped 1A he tried to do something else that I think was him trying to go for -1lo-3S or whatever he could make of it with the momentum from a single axel but realised what he was doing and stopped. He had a sheepish smile on his face.

Yea haha he was definitely going for 3A-1eu-3S for the last one. The 4T thing I read it from here (weibo translation), which I think is plausible. But no one knows for sure.

TAT and Yagudin just used it as an example that you need a lot of brain power for FS, and Yuzu has that in plenty, by taking control of every situation on ice.

  3. It's just a little funny how the Russian articles about Yuzu is so much higher in quality than American / CBC ones, even though most Yuzu materials are subbed in English. The Russians managed to point out his strengths, his character, what he is good at, and appreciate him for that across the biggest news platforms, among coaches and fans, even among people who don't skate. Here's Yuzu's intro card at Rostelecom Cup. Beats me if he ever gets this kind of description in US.

Like you wouldn't see US Football directors telling his players "Yuzu's popularity cannot be explained by his talent alone. He has the strength and the character for that, and we should be like him tomorrow for our competition" like the Russian director did.  None of their biggest news agencies talked about Pooh.

Here's some compiled comments from the figure skating community, and here's some compiled comments from the fans.  Yagudin and TAT both recognised that he is smart and reacted quickly when he failed to perform 4T-3T by attaching -1eu-3S instead, the Japanese TV analysed the changes in his FS layouts, and all CBC / US can think about his fans is poohs and controversial tweets.

  4. Regarding Yuzu going back to Japan, that's what I thought he would do actually.

Firstly, it would be easier for Yuzu to understand Japanese doctors and discuss his concerns with them, that's for certain. Secondly, I'm sure he'd rather spend his time off ice with his family than being stuck in Canada like last year, and go back to Canada when he's ready for on ice training.  I live abroad away from my family, and I can understand that. Being away from your family for so long, there are many things you don't know about them anymore, and it's sad. Especially the time difference and stuff.

Also, I am Chinese, and we kind of have this view that outside of tears and bone fractures, our own remedies (massage, acupuncture etc) to treat sprained ankles are more effective, which I agree. I sprained both my ankles 3 times each (rip), once quite serious - it didn't heal for 3 months and the after effects lingered for 2-3 years. My ankle muscles became weak (I can't move my feet around as much as my right feet) and mobility wasn't good. It took a lot of Chinese massage to "put the ligaments back in place" and another 2-3 years for it to return to slightly normal.

It sure sounds suspicious with me speaking it like this, but I find it much more effective than sitting back and letting it heal, which it didn't. I could feel a lot of difference after going for the massages, like it was painful as heck, but the recovery speed shot up like 10x and it's definitely not placebo (lol 6 sprained ankles with and without treatment). I'm sure the Japanese have similar stuff, the commercial ones are shit, but they certainly will have family friends who are good at this. Not all massagers know their stuff, I've been to like 3-4 and only 1 is effective, so maybe Yuzu is going back to Kikuchi or someone familiar.

Here's a thread on Yuzu's injury on twitter. Juro's thread quoted here has further discussions about the extent of injury.

Added this image about types of sprains here for your reference

    More details about my injury

    Spoiler

That worst sprain I had was in 2013, it was my left ankle, and my reaction was almost exactly the same as Yuzu - curled up because the pain was so bad, left my feet in that position and didn't want to move it because it was so painful, and I was only able to get up after the daze passed. The teachers iced my ankle after some delay, I thought things would be better after 2-3 days because that's how my past sprains went. So I was still limping to school every day with my bag and all because I stayed in a boarding school lol. Little did I know I would still be limping 3 months later, until I went back to my home country to get a massager. It wasn't painful, but it still felt swollen, and my ankle was so weak I couldn't move it much to walk properly, as if the muscles atrophied because I wore my ankle guard for too long.

It kept bothering me till about 2016, when I entered Uni and stopped having compulsory PE sessions + ball games. Even then my left ankle would swell up when I jog and stuff. It only became better in 2018, after like 2-3 years of wearing only boots to support my ankle. Basically 5 years of recovery rip. Till today I still avoid ball games because I'll likely sprain myself again lmao, and it still feels slightly stiffer than my right ankle.

A little trivia - They say that flexible people are more prone to sprain injuries because of looser ligaments, which I also agree. I can do splits without training (it just runs in my family) and look how many times I managed to sprain my ankle lmao, my jaw dropped when I heard that my friends never sprained their ankle even once. Yuzu being so much more flexible would need to train his muscles twice as hard as anyone else to keep it together. So in my opinion, him getting more sprain injuries isn't indicative of his "poor/deficiency in technique", it is just a tradeoff for being flexible. It's part of who he is, and what he needs to overcome.

I kind of trust Yuzu when he said it didn't feel as bad as the sprain last year, because once you had the worst sprain you can kind of judge which sprain is more serious. Last year he was in so much pain he just left himself splayed like that. This year didn't seem that bad, he managed to curl himself up after the fall, which was what I did when I sprained my ankle. Also, the medical thread above said that this year it's a different type of sprain - last year was sprained outwards, this year was inwards. Not good news regardless, but still better than injuring the same place. Still having read Aoi Hono, how he used to skate on sprained ankles all the time, I wouldn't call either of these new injuries lol.

There are still a lot of factors to be considered, like whether there are fractures or tears. But at any rate, I'm sure Yuzu will have a better recovery support for his injury. Rest is still important to heal properly though, I can't stress that enough - mine only took so long because I was still walking around a lot despite the sprain. Wish him all the best.

  5. I have read the Chinese fan's weibo post about her getting singled out for crying in SEIMEI costume last year.

    What she said was essentially

    (1) She cried because it's her first time seeing SEIMEI live

    (2) She cried because Yuzu landed Lutz

    (3) She cried because she knew Yuzu will be very harsh on himself, knowing that he did not win the competition

    (4) She cried because she just wants Yuzu to be happy, but she understands that Yuzu is Yuzu, and wished him all the best

It has nothing to do with Nathan, and the media twisting her intention is very sick. That makes them just as bad as the antis who call Yuzu faking his injury to get a free pass to the Worlds because he's scared of Nathan. Imposing bad motives on others is never right, no matter how you see it.

  6. Thing is, that tweet itself is obviously a clickbait. "Retweet if you are a Yuzuru Hanyu fan!", bam 1.1k retweets.

I actually didn't care much about the rest of the video. But the last bit got me. Of all the things you can choose to highlight in that video, you singled out a comment, made a disgusted face, and said "take that what you will?" The tweet did happen, no doubt. But if they had the resources to translate things, and of all the things they could translate, they chose THAT as a representative of Japanese fans? Fair coverage is one thing, you show both sides of the story. But selective coverage is not - people who don't know will take this as the truth. It is also disrespectful and bordering on vigilantism - who are they to single that lady out and direct attention to her, like what they did by twisting the girl's motive for crying last year? Is this how you get attention, is this responsible journalism? It's just about as rude as only choosing the most controversial, extremist Yuzu-Nathan tweets to highlight and imply that "Yuzu fans does not respect other skaters.", encouraging viewers to find them and direct their scorn at them, while ignoring that most of us cheer for other skaters, bring their flags and stuff. The damage was done - people thought Yuzu fans are all sore losers, and insane, dumb obsessors who thirst for his looks. The narrative goes on everywhere, and it'll take twice the effort to undo the damage.

On the other hand, I was thinking whether we could host a site for all Yuzu videos? It's a pity that a lot of subbed youtube videos were taken down. Would be great if we can have a safe haven for the media instead of sparse download links here and there. Maybe these people will then have a better information source than quoting random tweets.

      Reveal hidden contents

I agree with most of your assessment. I believe that much like NHK was last year, this will be a setback that will make them - well, him, since he makes all decisions - re-analyze everything and prioritize based on goals. What the goals are and what steps he'll take remains to be seen. But given how the Olympics went, I think he knows how to go about it. As sad as it was, NHK was a huge lesson and one that he will probably need from now on.

To get even more negative - so skip if you don't want to think in those terms - I think that ankle will never be 100% again. It will likely be very fragile and easy to hurt. I hate it when he blames himself for falling and things like that, but in a way I get it. He has to perfect his technique to such a level that falls become extremely unlikely. And not out of sheer perfectionism, but because he has little other choice. If he fell and landed badly as much as others probably do, he probably wouldn't last much longer. That's my biggest worry about his injuries and one I feared was somewhat confirmed by this incident. Although whether it's really true or not remains to be seen.

As for the long term goal... Honestly, I think if he really goes for 4A, Beijing is unlikely. I'm not saying doing both is impossible. A perfect 4A as Yuzu surely wants will take time to stabilize, even if he might land it sooner than we think. If it takes him until Beijing, surely he'll go and he'll go to win. But I think he will have to choose between the two as his main long term goal. So far, it seems he has chosen 4A, but depending on the ankle, that might change. On the other hand, if he goes for 4A, then I personally think he might just want to get it asap, while the ankle still holds.

All in all, I do hope things aren't as bad as I fear, but, either way, I'm sure he will always choose the options that give him the best chances to achieve his goals. On that, I trust him, even if maybe, sometimes, we might not understand his choices or his goals...

When and how do they say she did that? Seriously, Yuzu never reveals his injuries. He is firmly against it. If she had announced it despite that, then people would be right to feel outraged...

It is a misunderstanding, please don't spread it further. Ppl were just hating on her because the news translation of her saying the GPF withdrawal date is 3rd Dec came out after the translation of JSF's decision for him to aim for the Worlds. But actually the article itself came out 9 hours BEFORE the JSF statement, so likely Kobayashi was just saying what she knows then and is just hoping the best for Yuzu.

She's been around since Yuzu was at Sochi, and she's always been on his side, that's why I sought confirmation. I'm just angry at people making speculations like this, when it's Hashimoto who yelled at Yuzu during Sochi cuz she couldn't get over being a Dai stan. Hashimoto calmed down, but yea she was the controversial one, not Kobayashi, Kobayashi's always so nice and supporting Yuzu, analysing the scores with Yuzu/Brian/Ghislain after the CoR SP and stuff

I was in the same stage yesterday. But last night I rewatch the Origin with my full courage and found, to my surprise, it didn't hit me again, (except the 3A falling, I just hid my eyes in that moment ). But rather, it  really empowers me and I somehow got relieved. Cuz every step he made on the ice is such powerful, and that fighter spirit energizes me inside and out.

I actually watched the thing live lol. And I didn't think anything was serious with the fall, just thought "oh so his ankle is still bothering him a little despite him saying it's ok" so it wasn't that bad, wasn't a bad splat or anything

Nah, I still haven’t rewatched Origin at CoR. I’m still trying to find the courage to watch it. At least NHK17 was past and he got through it. I was trying to find some solace on how PH survived all those months before PC. If anybody knows let me know. I had trouble sleeping last night. :sadPooh:

Lol, if anyone had any doubts on where does Yuzuru's steel-like self criticism comes from... of course, if he thinks about all the people who sponsor him and give him money, all the people who work for him, directly and indirectly, the people close to him that worry for him... that kind of responsability is hard to carry.
(don't take this the wrong way - I'm not judging Yumi at all but reading something like that, it does sound pretty harsh - but then again, Japanese culture is particular exactly for things like these, very different from my own culture. So I'm not gonna comment any further)

Hmm. Yea I understand. I was paraphrasing though so don't take my word for granted.

I don't think it has anything to do with self-criticism, like my impression of the interviews/sources said that mama Yumi pretty much let Yuzu do whatever he wants (like gaming till morning and sleeping till noon lmao), never criticised Yuzu's skating, and Yuzu's insistence on perfection came long before he described this incident - there was a time when he was a kid where he'd train till midnight and refuse to get off the rink because he hasn't mastered a jump, and he just wanted keep winning like Plushenko I suppose - but showing gratefulness to others is something they cannot compromise on. It's a common value, not often preached but highly regarded.

Also regarding the pressure, he has learned long ago to turn them into strength, like he main motivation for Olympics, breaking world records and such are clearly his personal desire, and has little to do with expectations. Sure they do weigh on him, but it's just his childhood dream to get 2 gold medals, he had told Brian that before Sochi 2014, and there are videos on his mindset for the 2015 GPF record.

Perhaps it's cultural difference, when I read it it didn't come across that way, I thought it's pretty normal. Although I agree that mama Yumi is a strong person, she made sure to make meals that Yuzu could digest well (I heard he can't eat a lot of stuff lol), did a lot of things to support him, and being away from your husband for most of 6-7 years now must be difficult.

Sorry I'm not comfortable at that phrase being taken that way, feel like it's being twisted because it certainly wasn't like that

A lady who was holding a Pooh plushy after the FS may be  Ritsuko HORIUCHI (堀内律子), Director of JSA, but sorry I'm not totally sure.

List of Directors of JSA (it seems only five of them are women judging from their names.  And excepting 橋本聖子 (Seiko HASHIMOTO), 荒川静香 (Shizuka ARAKAWA), and 小林芳子 (Yoshiko KOBAYASHI), there are two unknown left, 堀内律子 (Ritsuko HORIUCHI) and 宇垣静子 (Shizuko UGAKI).

    https://skatingjapan.or.jp/jsf/

This is an only picture of 2013 that I found by searching with the name 堀内律子.  I couldn't find any of 宇垣静子.

    https://www.joc.or.jp/games/univ/2013_winter/japan/pdf/figure.pdf#search='堀内律子+JSA'

(Figure skating section, second person from the top of the left column)

Do you think it the same person considering her age?

Hope my deduction is correct :68556365:

The lady at Sochi 2014 SP K&C with Yuzu is Kobayashi, idk the source but it's been known among the older fans for a while now, probably was shown in newspapers and stuff.

The lady in your video is another person, we had a recent footage of Kobayashi with Yuzu/Brian/Ghislain and she still looked exactly the same as Sochi 2014, short hair and all.

Bravo to Yuzu despite the fall.  He won by a significant margin, much owed to his virtually flawless SP.  Now to a couple questions I have.  I don't know how often I've seen this Japanese woman bustling around in the background but I know she's not associated with TCC.  She was the person who was sitting next to him when awaiting SP score at Sochi.  Just who is the lady?  Secondly, I noticed another Japanese woman standing in the background as Yuzu left the ice both after the SP and the FS.  After the FS she was holding a Pooh plushy and some other paraphernalia.  Again, who is she?  Mama Hanyu is the best guess I can make since I have a feeling she might travel with TCC on any number of occasions.  If not her I can't figure out who.  Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer these two questions.

She is Yoshiko Kobayashi, was a JSF representative but she's now the director I think. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2017/02/28/figure-skating/miyahara-set-return-ice-preparation-world-championships/#.W_EgYKep1QI . She hanged around with Yuzu and Brian and Ghislain to analyse the scores after the SP too

Mama Hanyu is that photo as you've seen, she's called Yumi (由美). A quick search on Youtube would give you this documentary too, this is the only show she ever showed up in iirc. She does travel with him to competitions and attends them, fans reported that he babbled nonstop on the plane for hours to his mum who probably just nodded lol. He also said that whenever he thought of giving up, it's his mum who said stern words to him to push him out of negative thoughts.

The Hanyu family is very private and does not want to show themselves publicly, mama Hanyu actually hid herself whenever journalists crowd around Yuzu at the airport lol. They just thought that whatever Yuzu did was the result of his own hard work, and didn't want to take the limelight whatsoever. But they certainly brought him up well, being so disciplined, grateful and having a healthy mindset towards rivalry/sports/pressure etc., that's my opinion. You can read more about his family here https://yuzusorbet.tumblr.com/post/110078456747/the-family-that-nurtured-yuzuru-the-genius

From Aoi Hono (I or II idk) Yuzu mentioned that once he thought he was pretty good for being able to podium while skating with a sprained ankle, but his mum said something like "don't you dare to think it's all your credit, if not for all the medics and coaches helping you, you wouldn't be able to do what you did today." Yuzu realised how he took other's help for granted, and has been grateful to everyone ever since. You can buy Aoi Hono from Amazon and request translations from nonchan or tadaki.

Also if anyone's curious, this is Papa Hanyu, he's called Hidetoshi 秀利. He was accepting a donation from Sendai? that crowdfunded to support Yuzu skating. He's a math teacher / primary school principal, and is a pretty strict one I heard haha. This is pretty much the only existing image of him online lol, from GS. So don't believe any other speculative photos of him. Many claimed that the photo of Yuzu with Sochiro Tsuzuki, his novice coach, was his father lol. https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?64264-Yuzuru-Hanyu-2013-14-Season&p=941981&viewfull=1#post941981

    lpPxJkh.jpg

His sister is called Saya, born 1990, and works at the Ice Rink Sendai now I think. People speculated that one of the girls who appeared in Pandalion's support music video for Yuzu is her, but lol.

All 4 of them have different blood types, so either of his parents must be AB and O, and since Yuzu is B, his sister will be A.

This version was recorded & released back in 2016. I believe Shinya's releasing a new album in Dec that will include Haru Yo Koi as a bonus track. So hopefully he has re-recorded the ice show version...?

The full version is on spotify, you need to create an account to listen to it. This is just a sample.

  15. Why would Dai reject an ice show with Yuzu? I thought those are just his fan’s actions?

Also, I agree that the Ice Show arrangements are more of a marketing strategy than pride. It's an illusion that skaters have 100% liberty to go to any ice show he wants without some commercial pressure here and there, especially from their sponsors. I mean Yuzu is constrained to only do advertisements for ANA, Lotte, P&G, Phiten and a select few brands, due to the interest of the sponsors to maintain exclusivity - that's why you don't see Yuzu on sport brands, which is an oddity for an athlete. More advertisements means more revenue for Yuzu, but less revenue for his sponsors because now people can get Yuzu products from other places, not necessarily theirs. I doubt people will buy 20 chewing gums for the Xylitol files if other companies have them too.

Oh wow. That looks complicated. I really just understood it in a much simpler way.

Since the axel is jumped facing forward, if a skater is pre-rotated by 180° he would be facing the other way, and would no longer be facing forward, but facing backwards instead, and hence it wouldn't even be an axel. :tumblr_inline_ncmif5EcBB1rpglid::tumblr_inline_ncmif5EcBB1rpglid:

That is true! Unfortunately that logic evaded some people (including me rip). So I tried to visualise it in terms of forces and momentum haha. Physics do not lie :p

  17. 5 hours ago, Old Cat Lady said:

A lot of people do pre-rotate the axel but it's generally by less than a 1/4 as opposed to toe jumps, where a lot of skaters pre-rotate up to 180 degrees. Pre-rotating generally results in a smaller jump.  People seem to be able to sort of spin into the jump off the toe so I'm guessing they're relying on momentum+cheat to complete the rotations but since they're not vaulting into the jump, it can't get the height.  I can't explain the sciency aspect of it but I have noticed that there's a lot less pre-rotation on the axel in general and I think that's why skaters like Shoma have had so much more difficulty with the axel than the "quads".

here's my attempt lol. From making this I can see why heavily prerotated jumps are often unstable, and why timing of takeoff is so important in edge jumps. Also makes prerotated jumps much smaller as forward velocity is lost to create the "rotation" on ice, basically less air time.

In this illustration, you can see it's still possible to travel forward with 180 PR on non axel takeoffs, but not possible to travel forward with 180 PR on axel takeoffs. Matches with what Chib said I guess.

    YeFnK1g.jpg

Hope I took all the forces into account. Glad I could apply what I learned in school though lol.
