You guys think it’s tough to find someone to fangirl with! Try finding someone to fanguy with! One of our very best friends, Greg, who aided and abetted us in our trip to Montréal for the 2017 ACI is a typical Canadian guy who plays hockey at least twice a week in an old timers’ casual league. Whenever I bring up Yuzu and men’s figure skating, he says, “Where are the sticks?”

Yuzu is too strong and too self-reliant to ever consider a therapist. No one has to tell Yuzu what he needs to do and he would never listen anyway. I always trust him when facing a new challenge and he never disappoints me, regardless of the result. Yuzu is one extremely intelligent, tough, and resilient young man!

Welcome to the Planet! How did you become a fan of Yuzu?

My favorite Tracy Wilson commentary regarding Yuzu is still 2012 Worlds in Nice during the NBC coverage. This was Yuzu's last competition with Nanami Abe as his coach and just a month or so before he would be going to the Toronto Cricket Club where Tracy would be one of his coaches. I tried finding this video, but I couldn't. Just a few of the comments made by Tracy: "When Yuzuru is on, his jumps are sensational. When he is off, his falls are spectacular. Opening with a quad toe – he's on!" "Just 17 years of age, he is so exciting to watch because he holds nothing back!" "Challenged by asthma, you can see he's gasping here." "He's just a kid we will be watching going into Sochi! What an upside he has!" What an upside indeed!

I remember the whole bad rumour thing about Yuzu marrying his former classmate. If I recall correctly, Yuzu apologized for any embarrassment that may have been caused by this rumour, even though he was absolutely faultless. I also remember this video and thinking no wonder Yuzu is giving such a quick, abrupt, no-nonsense, absolutely definitive answer to the girl’s question! The rumour was obviously weighing heavily on his mind.

This is definitely the right pronunciation – with a soft G and pronouncing the S. It is pronounced "Jislan" ("Jeeslan"). This is what his wife calls him, so it must be correct!
-
I think that he was pronouncing it fairly accurately.

Satellite Identification at Competitions - would a badge be a good idea?

I really like it, too! Thanks! -

I just finished watching the 2017 movie “Darkest Hour” starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill’s quote that appears at the end of the movie is apropos to Yuzuru Hanyu. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Is that a promise or a threat?

I would definitely recommend a big TV. Since I spend a lot of time in bed, I’ve got an 80 inch 3D TV on the wall of my bedroom just a few feet from the foot of my bed. The sound system is Dolby 5.1 powered by a Yamaha receiver with mini wall-mounted Bose surroundsound speakers and a subwoofer. I was intending to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and my Blu-ray collection when I got the system, but I have my laptop with a 4 TB external hard drive loaded with Yuzu videos connected to the TV, so I end up watching and re-watching Yuzu! Edit: it's like having my own Jumbotron!

Satellite Identification at Competitions - would a badge be a good idea?
Geo1 replied to rockstaryuzu's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
I am very late to this thread, but I think that a name badge is a great idea. Anything is fine with me. If I had to choose one, I would choose the one with the satellites because it has a lot of room for names. -
This is very rough, but he said that he was nervous before the program because the quad salchow had been troublesome. He heard the cheers from the audience and that was a great source of support and inspiration for him. The interviewer said that the quad salchow received high marks and Yuzu felt happy with the jump himself. Interviewer talked about the second jump element – the quad toe loop-triple toe loop combination – and said that it was a different layout than his free skate at the PyeongChang Olympics. Yuzu said that there had been a time when he did this program with this layout and he felt that he could express himself better with this layout and that is why he chose to go with it. He said that there were little changes throughout the program. He said that there were a lot of details that he felt he could improve on and that's what he wanted to do. When it was over, he said he felt like he did at the PyeongChang Olympics after the short program when he said "I'm back." It was first time that he felt as if he skated a program as himself and in a manner befitting himself. He thought that it was a performance that he could be happy about from the bottom of his heart.

I don't know whether this has been posted already, but this is the SP with Yuzuru Hanyu commenting on his own program:

I think that Yuzu is bringing back Chopin and Seimei because these are his iconic programs and the ones most likely to earn high grades of execution and program components scores if he skates them clean. I think that Yuzu has reached the conclusion that he will not be able to outscore (or the judges will not allow him to outscore) Nathan Chen with Otonal and Origin. I think that Yuzu has changed the layout and choreography of Chopin and Seimei so as to maximize their base values and to conform to the free skate time limit. Although he always accepts full responsibility for losing and gives full credit to Nathan for winning, Yuzu and his team are not blind to the fact that judges under evaluate his scores and inflate Nathan’s. I think that Yuzu sees Chopin and Seimei as his weapons to retake the world championships. God knows what Yuzu will do if he skates these programs absolutely clean and does not receive scores commensurate with his performances. If Yuzu competes next season, I am sure that he will bring two brand-new programs that will knock the socks off everyone.

Yuzu is the supreme strategist and I wouldn't be surprised if he has memorized The Art of War by Sun Tzu. "Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt." – Sun Tzu, The Art of War "In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity." – Sun Tzu, The Art of War
-
I have a feeling that it is true – with changes in choreography and layout. He has not been consistent with his current programs and Otonal is not maximized for points. The only time he has skated both programs clean is at 2019 Skate Canada International. He wants to win Worlds and the combination of Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 and Seimei offer the best potential for maximizing his scores. 4CC gives him the opportunity to do a competitive run through before Worlds. If it is true, I will miss both Otonal and Origin. I will particularly miss the Origin regal purple costume and hairstyle.

China has quarantined large areas and no travel is permitted in or out of those regions. If there are any Chinese team skaters trapped in those areas, they will not be able to travel. South Korea has now designated all of China as coronavirus contaminated and all visitors arriving from China will be screened and be required to provide detailed health histories (1:21). If you turn cc on for English subtitles, there is a typo or misinterpretation (or Freudian slip) at 1:21: “South Korea will detonate all of China…”

Brian and Ghislain will be at 4CC for Yuzu and Jun. Ghislain will also be coaching Alison Schumacher, the ladies silver medalist at the Canadian Nationals. With Jason Brown heading the US contingent, Tracy Wilson should be there as well.

26 January 1924 Charles Jewtraw was the inaugural winner at the Olympic Winter games in Chamonix. https://www.olympic.org/news/26-january-1924-charles-jewtraw-was-the-inaugural-winner-at-the-olympic-winter-games-in-chamonix FROM CHARLES JEWTRAW TO SHAUN WHITE AND YUZURU HANYU Charles Jewtraw won the first American title at the Olympic Winter Games, the 100th was won by Shaun White for the snowboard halfpipe at PyeongChang 2018. It will have been 94 years and 22 days between the first winter Olympic podium and the 1000th, which saw the rise of the winner of the men’s singles in figure skating, Yuzuru Hanyu, accompanied by his fellow Japanese countrymen Shoma Uno and Spaniard Javier Fernandez on 17 February 2018. The history of the Olympic Winter Games has a start and it continues to be written every four years.

With the ease of travel, the new strain of coronavirus or Wuhan virus has the potential to become a worldwide pandemic if measures to prevent it are not strictly enforced. The first case of Wuhan virus in Canada has been confirmed in Toronto. Korea is one of seven Asian countries, including Japan, that have confirmed cases of Wuhan virus. Whenever athletes, their coaches and their support staff travel to the areas with confirmed cases of Wuhan virus, there is always the potential for contracting it. I am hoping that Yuzu is not exposed to it in Toronto, Korea or Japan. With his asthma, I would assume that he is more vulnerable than others, if he contracts in.
