2023-2024 Grand Prix Events

Recommended Posts

Since some satellites (myself included) were asking about it the General Yuzu thread, I took the initiative and made a post for this year's GP events.

Since Skate America just finished, obvs it's a bit late but please feel free to use this thread for all your streaming and watching discussion for all the events.

Next up is Skate Canada International,  coming at you from Vancouver, BC, Oct 26 - 28.

Where to watch? Send me links, I'll post them here, but as a rule I myself watch from the ISU YouTube feed

Main link is the livestream direct from the Skate Canada page:

https://skatecanada.ca/2023-skate-canada-international/#live-stream

It's also available on CBC Gem or cbc.ca (go to the sports page). No live network broadcast will be available, only online viewing.

Thank you💜!

So, skate america, some thoughts:

1)

I absolutely love Kevins Bolero! The jumps are wonderfully integrated in a artsy, sometimes unusual performance. I don't want to be the judge sitting where he does his ending pose😂.
2)

Deniss....sigh....it would be so nice of he could get his jumps stable....but I like his haircut😉.
3)

Illia....well, I don't really like his program, but it has gotten better then the ones before where it felt like 3.30min of jumping parade and then some extra looking steps. It feels more balanced in my opinion.

4)

Also, the music choices seem a bit classic/old school? Not really something new.... But I haven't seen everything, so probably to early to judge🤷🏼‍♀️.
5)
Leonas program fits her really well, but I think I need to see it a few more times to decide if I like it or not.
And it seems like doing something right in the judges faces is a trend this season😅.

6)
Also, even if it wasn't their best performance, I'm proud of our german pair skaters. I also really liked her outfit.

Regarding Kevin's Bolero, I agree. That song is an absolute warhorse, but Kevin made it seem fresh and new. Loved his approach to it.

Interesting about Deniss. I feel like he's changed his skating in the last year or so. He's become way more confident and self-assured in his expression.  Unfortunately,  he's still got jump issues.

Ilia - the only fault I could actually find with his program was the music choice itself. It doesn't suit him. His skating was fine, and I thought he was really sensible not to bother with the 4A if he didn't need it to score high. He deserved to win. However, I can't convince myself he deserved a score of 206. Judges clearly still on crack...

Other notes:

I was so mad on Zach and Marjorie's behalf when the crowd weren't into their Thriller RD. They did it perfectly, brought exactly the right energy, and no one even clapped along to the music.... argh.

I feel like Trennt Michaud looks like a new man. He's suddenly skating so much better and Lia seems to sync with him so well. It's pretty interesting to watch the evolution.

I thought Xianyi An did really well and am intrigued to see more of her skating.

I agree with this. His expressions are great....

Deniss.  I like his haircut too.  Still with jump issues even after the help of Ghislain.   :gaah:

....and maybe it's the famous "it gets a bit worse before it gets better".

Maybe they tried a new approach and we all know this can shake things a bit up before it gets better.

Or it just wasn't a good jump day for him, the season is still young🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyone one else watching the SCI practice stream right now? Kaetlyn Osmond and Kevin Reynolds are doing live commentary and it's really informative!

Edit: Women's SP coming up on 45 minutes

Women's SP has started.

Up first: Sarah-Maude Dupuis. Her first GP. Not bad but she needs some work still. Score: 52 and change

Currently skating: Mae-Berenice Maieté with a big political statement in her music choice.  Good woman, herself!

Unfortunately she had jump troubles on every jumping pass 😬.  Score: 41.65

Rino Matsuike, doing One Day I'll Fly Away.

Lovely rose pink costume. Gorgeous Beilmann!

Excellent 3Lz - 3T combo as the last jump pass.

The sound system in the arena must have something wrong with it, all the music sounds off

Score: 66.29

I think the color is horrible 🙈😅.

But I agree with the Bielmann😉

I have to admit, I like Starr's pink better.

I enjoyed Kaiya's skate, and Starr's, too. Missed commenting because I was on the phone with my mom.

But I think Kaiya deserved better than a 55!

I'm usually not a fan of unitards, but I like what the Italian girl is wearing. Music is different, kind of funky

Agree (but i usually like unitards).....but the program seems a bit empty (?) so far to me, or like something is missing🫤
