- First of all, how did you feel when you received the offer to direct “Echoes of Life”?

MIKIKO: I had just given it my all with RE_PRAY, so I honestly wasn't sure if I could make a new program in less than a year, but I immediately started thinking, “What can I do next?” 

 

- How did the experiences, lessons learned, and feelings gained from “GIFT” live on in the previous “RE_PRAY” and how are they connected to this third program?

M: I feel like it's getting closer and closer to the ideal form I had in mind. Since it's called ICE “STORY,” my ideal would be a program of new sensation where the 2D world and the 3D world intersect in perfect balance like watching a show or a movie. “RE_PRAY” is connected by the motif of games, and I aimed to create a production that would bring the world on the screen directly into the venue. This time, a story written by Hanyu-kun is the subject of the work, and I hope that you will immerse yourself more into the world of the story, based on the learnings from the past two works.

 

- The beauty of the projection mapping is overwhelming every time. What are the specialties and pleasures of an ice show where the entire surface of the rink can be used like a canvas for the production?

M: I’m particular about the linking of choreography and projected images so that we can make the most of the speed and dynamism that only skating can bring. The synergy between Hanyu-kun's highly accurate skating and the projection is truly amazing, and I, as a spectator, am looking forward to it!

 

- “Gate of Living” was the first performance that MIKIKIKO-san choreographed in full. What was the reason for choosing the song and what was important to you in the choreography?

M: When I first read the original draft of “RE_PRAY,” I thought of the lyrics and musical concept of “Gate of Living,” and I proposed this song. A choreography came to mind that made me feel like Hanyu-kun was struggling and moving forward on a path where he had no choice but to move forward, where he looked so beautiful and almost scary! I choreographed with conscious effort to convey the bare emotions through the moves of his upper body in the choreography.

 

- “RE_PRAY” was Hanyu-san's first solo tour. What new discoveries did you make on that tour?

M: I know it is hard for the performers to keep up their motivation and stamina, but the surprise of seeing the same play look different each time is one of the real pleasures of touring. It was a lot of fun to brush up the directing to match the venue.

 

- From his competitive days, Hanyu-san was an impressive athlete who always put in his all, even to the exhibitions after competitions. From the stand point of MIKIKO-san, who has worked closely with him in creating the shows, how do you view his passion, efforts, and inquisitiveness?

M: I am still constantly amazed and think, “You still have that talent hidden away?” Hanyu-kun is a genius when it comes to hard work, so it takes a lot of energy and determination on the part of the staff around him, including myself, but I think this synergy is an ideal relationship in creating something. But that heat level is probably normal for him, so I hope he continues influence us unconsciously in the future.

 

- It's been two years since he turned professional in July, and from your point of view, how has the “Yuzuru Hanyu as a pro” evolved and changed?

M: I think his horizons have definitely broadened, and I feel like he is no longer afraid to try new things. I think he is evolving as an expressionist and a creator, as his otaku-nature or nerdiness (this is a compliment) that he has accumulated outside of skating is being put to good use in his creating works.

 

- What does "professional" mean to MIKIKO-san, the professional of professionals?

M: The power to believe, to never give up, and to have fun

 

- What kind of view do you see with Hanyu-san as a fellow professional expressionist?

M: It's a vivid, beautiful, tranquil and sacred view.

 

- The release for “Echoes” stated that it was “a story that questions the nature of ‘life’ and ‘living’ with the theme of life's journey and growth.” What kind of tour do you want to make?

M: We put our heart and soul into making this tour so that it will touch the hearts of the people who come to see it. We hope that this tour will give as many people as possible the strength to “live” from tomorrow onwards.

 

- The first day of the tour is Hanyu-san's 30th birthday. Please give him a message as he enters his 30s?

M: Finally 30 years old! Age has caught up with you. With your boyish purity and godly insight, gain more experiences that only someone in their 30s can have, become an even cooler person, and save the world!

I miraculously won a ticket for day 1 and am on my way to Hachinohe, passing through a mountains where I took my profile picture several years ago. It's been snowing here since yesterday and everything is covered with snow. My parents were laughing at the craziness of traveling up North in this weather but trying to understand it saying Yuzuru Hanyu skating in Tohoku must be rare. (well, he is almost always skating there, though usually none can see it...)
