It looks like Yuzu put two hands down and Patrick only one, so maybe that's it? I am not well-versed in how the judges decide things so maybe someone else with more knowledge than me could weigh in

His FS in Sochi was as polished as his later ones, yet still at a higher level than that of other skaters. The 4T is gorgeous. The spins are beautiful. I have another related question. Please refer to the video below. I’m wondering why Yuzu’s 3F at 39:37 was judged as a fall and received a 1-point deduction, while Patrick’s 4T at 30:53 and 3A at 31:08 did not, even though all three jumps involved both hands touching the ice and neither skater’s buttocks touched the ice. Under the current rule, a fall is defined as a situation in which “the majority of his/her own body weight is on the ice, supported by any part of the body other than the blades, e.g. hand(s), knee(s), back, buttock(s), or any part of the arm.” To me, the loss of balance on Yuzu’s 3F looks very similar to Patrick’s on his 3A. That’s why I’m confused about why Patrick’s 3A did not receive the same 1-point deduction, and maybe his 4T as well.

Wow! This costume has such an interesting backstory! And Satomi Ito has quite an imagination! No wonder she is so creative when it comes to designing costumes. Now, I'm waiting for her to write a fantasy novel inspired by Yuzu.

I seem to recall there was more time between them. I mean, most skating competitions have events on consecutive days, but for big events like the Olympics they often alternate disciplines (eg, dance RD& women's SP one day, pairs & mens SP the next, then back to women & dance, etc) so that there's a full 24 hours between events for individual skaters, but a lot depends on the broadcast schedule, too, especially if it's going to be shown live. I think the issue with Sochi was that the turnaround time between the SP and the free skate was less than 24hrs. But it was also the first Olympics of the so-called quad revolution, where men were attempting multiple quads per program, and the scoring at that time didn't penalize jump errors the same. So men were jumping in a quite YOLO way and, predictably, missing a lot of the attempts. Lots of popped jumps, lots of splatting onto the ice.

I've just discovered this very important fact : we only see the performance and don't actually know the schedule... Also, parts 3 and 4 are available here in the video section.

I love watching all his preformances whether they are clean or not. I spend way too much time in the video archive looking at his different skates.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Sochi olympics is actually where I started being interested in watching figure skating (Yuzuru's short had a lot to do with that), but at that time I surely didn't pay attention to how much time skaters have between short and free. BTW I think his fall on the opening 4S in the free should not overshadow the perfect 4T that came after. Surely one of the best quads of the event, if not the best.

Also the schedule for the men in Sochi was dreadful. The short program and the free skate were held on consecutive days with no rest day in-between. The short program for the top men didn't finish until about 11 pm then they had to do the press conference so got back to their accomodation in the early hours of the free skate day. They then had to be up early for practice. Terrible scheduling. I think it was something to do with the team event timing ( the first time it had been held).

To put that skate in perspective, go watch the whole Sochi men's final, if you can find it. It had more crashes and blow-ups than a demolition derby. And the competitors who managed to skate clean all had low scores coming out of the short program so couldn't really catch up. Yuzu's skate was as good as he could do on that day and it was enough to win. And that's how the sport works. It wasn't "trash", which would imply he didn't try his best. He put in the effort and deserved the win, it was just a rough day on the ice for everyone

Certainly we have seen cleaner performances than this, yet he is always so beautiful to watch and much more exciting than the rest of the skaters. After his second fall, he must have been frustrated and used his frustration as a motivation to find himself again in seconds. Times like these remind us that he is is just a human, not perfect but even more lovable. PS: His Biellman spin was breathtaking!🌷
