On the first day of the new season, the Japan Skating Federation updated the page of figure strengthening players on the official website. Yuzuru Hanyu (ANA), a male who has been designated as a special reinforcement player since last season and won the Pyeongchang Olympics in 18 years in a row, said, "Thank you very much for your support. Jeffrey Buttle interview from the latest Kiss & Cry magazine (vol. 44), automatically translated with deepL. As always, I don't speak Japanese and this is not a proper translation.

! Do not repost outside of Planethanyu !

Spoiler

Jeffrey Buttle

Born 1 September 1982, in Canada. Won a bronze medal at the 2006 Torino Olympics and a gold medal at the 2008 World Championships. Since retiring, he has been active as a professional skater, performing in ice shows and other events. He has choreographed programmes for many top skaters, including Hanyu.

Q: In Fantasy on Ice 2022, you were involved in the choreography of the opening and finale. Please tell us how this came to be?

J: Yes. David [Wilson] was supposed to come with us from Canada to do the choreography, but unfortunately he tested positive for the new coronavirus and couldn't come to Japan. So I had the honour of being offered that role just before my departure. I was only in Japan for a few days for Stars on Ice 2022 in the spring, but for Fantasy on Ice 2022, I will be in Japan for more than a month. I already had some ideas for the choreography by the time I travelled to Japan, so I arrived on the Tuesday before the first show (in Makuhari) and immediately started rehearsing with the performers.

Q: I saw the first day of the Makuhari show, and it was a very exciting show with great group numbers that I can't believe you created in such a short period of time. How was the rest of the show?

J: It was wonderful. The Japanese fans were probably told to be silent to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. That said, they cheered for us with applause and hand-clapping, and the energy in the audience was incredible. It had been a long time since I had performed in front of so many fans.

Q: How was the Japanese ice show compared to Stars on Ice in Canada (April/May)?

J: In Japan, the venues are packed, so it is a wonderful experience to skate there. But the Canadian audience made up for it with their passion, even if there were not as many people there (laughs).

Q: You have choreographed all the group numbers for Stars on Ice and Fantasy on Ice in the US, Canada and Japan this season.

J: Yes, that's right. I was busy (laughs). I choreographed and performed in 12 shows in Canada, and I also performed in 'Fantasy on Ice'. Especially for 'Fantasy on Ice', I was collaborating with artists, so I created several group numbers in different styles.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration for your choreography?

J: First of all, from the impression I get from the music. When I listen to music, images naturally come to me. I also check music videos and musicals frequently to get inspiration for different styles.

Q: With the amount of work you have to do, is it hard to keep choreography out of your mind?

J: Sometimes I change my mind and try not to think about it all the time... (smiles). But choreography is a big part of my life.

Q: Have you already started choreographing competition programmes for the 22-23 season?

J: Yes, before coming to Japan I did a lot of choreography for local Canadian athletes around Toronto. And in Japan, I had a week off between the Fantasy on Ice tour, so I choreographed Koshiro's (Koshiro Shimada) short program for the upcoming season.

Q: At Fantasy on Ice 2022, you met with Hanyu for the first time in a long time.

J: I hadn't seen Yuzu (Hanyu) in person for a couple of years, although we had been in regular contact via Zoom. I was very happy and we exchanged hugs.

Q: How did Hanyu seem to you at the shows?

J: Yuzu was very energetic and I think his enthusiasm radiated to the other skaters and had a positive impact on them. He completely dominated the ice and had a great presence, like a rock star. The fans were really happy to see Yuzu perform live for the first time in a long time, and the whole audience went wild. It was amazing.

Q: You are one of the choreographers who have worked closely with Hanyu since he moved up to the senior ranks, can you talk a little about his development?

J: Yuzu came to me for the first time, I think, eleven years ago... it's been eleven years already! At that time he was just a teenager, but he was very talented. To tell you the truth, I hardly knew him at that time. But it was always a lot of fun for me to work with new skaters. The first time I choreographed for Yuzu, like other Japanese skaters, he didn't ask me questions, he was just a student who quietly followed my instructions. He concentrated on doing exactly what he was told. But gradually he started to express his opinions clearly, and our work soon became a kind of collaboration. I really like that way of doing things, and it's also important for the skaters. It's important for any athlete to be able to look back on their competitive life and feel that they've done what they really wanted to do, in their own style, and I was privileged to be a part of that process with him.

Q: Do you remember what caused him to develop his self-awareness?

J: The season after Yuzu won his first gold medal at the Sochi Olympics (2014), he told me very passionately that he wanted to skate to a piano music. Up until then, he had been totally trusting in my choices of music and arrangements, but for the first time, he expressed his wish of what he wanted to do. I think this was an indication that he was becoming more mature and at the same time gaining confidence after winning the gold medal. It was as if something new had awakened in him.

Q: He then won his second gold medal at the PyeongChang Olympics (2018).

J: The Pyeongchang Olympics was very special because I had seen him at the Cricket Club struggling with his injury before he went there. He had rested a bit after the injury before coming back on the ice, but he still couldn't jump, so he was working hard on his skating and other things, and doing cardio training to keep his fitness levels up. It is very hard for a skater to not be able to train as much as they would like because of an injury, and it makes them anxious. But I think he was mentally strong. I saw the hard process he was going through, so it was very emotional for him to get his second gold medal.

Q: And this year he competed at his third Olympics.

J: I know he was disappointed to miss out on the podium. But just the fact that he competed in his third Olympics while winning gold twice is incredible, because there are a lot of athletes who only compete once and then quit. I hope he is proud of what he has achieved.

Q: You have seen many top athletes, what do you think is special about Hanyu?

J: He can give the performance that is needed at the right moment. And once he is on the ice, he bursts with energy in front of the audience. It is as if he was born to perform.

Q: Do you have plans to choreograph a new programme for Hanyu?

J: We haven't discussed it yet. I think he's probably in the process of thinking about what he wants to do next season.

The relationship between Buttle and Hanyu has grown from being a choreographer and a student to a collaboration. What kind of progress will the relationship between the two, which has developed over the years, make in the future? At the moment it is still undecided what Hanyu's plans for next season will be, but he will certainly give his fans something new and exciting to look forward to.

Spoiler

Fantasy on Ice was cancelled for two years due to the spread of the new coronavirus. This is the first time in three years that it has happened, and Kobe is the third stop, after starting in Makuhari on 27 May. Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez, who have participated in Fantasy on Ice as main performers for many years and were teammates as athletes since the summer of 2012, and have competed on the world stage in friendly rivalry, shared their thoughts on the ice show.

Q: It's been three years since Fantasy on Ice. You have already finished the shows in Makuhari, what was your impression of the start of this show?

Hanyu: Fantasy on Ice is a long tour, from the first performance to the last day, but this time, from the very beginning, I could feel the enthusiasm of the audience, to the point where I was like, "Is this the last day already?". So I was happy about that. It wasn't just about my performance or everyone else's, it was more about the feeling of togetherness that only Fantasy on Ice can bring, and I felt that in the connection with the audience.

Fernandez (hereafter Javi): I agree with what Yuzuru said, the energy coming from the other skaters and the audience was amazing. Also, I thought there was a lot more excitement in the air than usual, because we haven't had a chance to skate in front of an audience for a long time and we haven't had Fantasy on Ice for a long time. And I think for a lot of skaters, it's also challenging in a way. I hadn't skated like this for almost three years, so it's taken me a while to get back into it and of course I'm tired. But I think it was a good experience and a good comeback.

Hanyu: I heard that the corona situation in Spain was very tough and difficult, how was your life, Javi?

Javi: The situation in Spain was not good for a long time, so I couldn't skate as much as I wanted to, and we had to do a lot of things to fight infection... I had to deal with many complicated things in my daily life and in my practice sessions, so it was really difficult. But I am very happy and excited that life is gradually returning to normal. I feel like I finally have my life and what I used to do back.

Q: I would like to ask you about your choreography for the ice show and your commitment to your performance.

Hanyu: For me, the music is my main focus... Of course, the world view is also important, but it has to be in harmony with the music. I also try to always have a clear idea of what kind of story or theme I want to express with the music.

I always want to make sure that the performance communicates something to the audience, even if I cannot always convey 100% of what I was intending in my performance.

Javi: Like Yuzuru, I want the audience to feel what I am doing on the ice or what is happening on the ice, by telling small stories or expressing the music on the ice.

So I feel that I want to draw the audience towards my performance as much as possible.

Now I'm really looking forward to the shows in Kobe. It will be a very interesting time for me there, I think. Unlike the previous two events, we have prepared a collaboration programme, in which I'll be skating to the same song with which I won a medal at the Olympics, with an artist actually singing it for me. It's the first time for me to skate to that music with a live singer, so I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope that the audience will like it and remember the Olympics when they see it.

Hanyu: Can I ask you a question myself please? Do you feel any difference between being a competitive athlete and being a professional skater?

Javi: That's a very good question (laughs). I think my life changed completely in one day when I turned professional after competing. From the moment I decided to quit competing, I felt like a new life had begun. I don't have to train hard every single day anymore. Of course, I still train for the ice shows, but it's a completely different life than when I was competing. Before that, it was very hard for me to keep myself on a tight schedule and manage myself well. I used to wake up in the morning, train, practice on the ice, go home, rest and then go to bed, but it's all different now. Now, so many things really happen in one day. It's like opening a door and stepping into a new world. It's very interesting, but at the same time I think many things require a different kind of endurance than when I was competing.

Q: Fernandez mentioned collaborations - collaborations with artists are unique to Fantasy on Ice - what criteria do you use to select the songs for these collaborations? Also, what are the interesting and the difficult aspects of collaborations?

Hanyu: Well, of course there are times when I choose songs that I am good at, but I also choose songs that broaden my range, like "Oh, I want to do something like this" or "I can also do something like this". So, of course, there are times when I try out genres I've never tried before...

However, in a collaboration, there is more pressure than usual, because the artist is there and I am performing alongside him. I don't want to cause any trouble for the artist, and there is a lot of pressure to create something that is even more perfect by working together. In that sense, it is quite an adventure, but on the other hand, the pressure can sometimes lead to a very good performance. I feel like I'm learning a lot every time I do it.

Javi: I agree with Yuzuru. I feel the same pressure as when I skate my own programmes, but I also strongly feel that I need to work as a team with my co-performers. But for us, it's a great opportunity to do something different, something new. I think we can have some special moments, special times.

I think the live singing is really beautiful... When we practice normally, we just play the same music over and over again, but to skate to a song sung live by an artist is a very precious thing, and I think it's very exciting and refreshing. So when I choose songs for that, I first think about the kind of tune that suits me.

Q: The two of you have been performing together for many years in Fantasy on Ice, as well as in other ice shows and post-competition exhibitions. Have you ever seen each other's programmes or performances and thought "I can't do that"?

Hanyu: Well, he can do some kind of comical programmes that only he can do. To me, he gives a kind of relaxed feeling... But it's not just about making people laugh. Like the Chaplin programme, it's a bit comical, but with a naturalness and a sense of spontaneity, while still expressing an emotional commitment to the audience. I think it's very difficult to find that balance, because you don't want it to become just a comedy. That's why I think that the way he connects with the audience and makes them laugh, and the way he makes them feel relaxed, is a kind of acting and movement that only he can do, and that I can't.

The reason for this is very difficult to explain, but my skating is not the type of skating that is relaxed, and I am able to catch the audience's attention with intensity, or on the contrary, I can make it look very beautiful, but I can‘t do anything like that. I'm not that type of skater. To be more technical, the way he swings the blade back and forth and the way he stops the movement is something that is unique to him. I think he's really good at that.

Javi: There are so many programmes from Yuzuru that make me think "wow!", it's hard to choose one (laughs). But if I had to pick one, I remember one that I can't name, but it's a really cool one with a black costume and a rock song. It's a bit like my 'Black Betty' program.

Hanyu: What is it, Masquerade?

Javi: No, it was an earlier programme.

Hanyu: Then maybe Doors 'Hello I Love You'? Or Gary Moore's 'Parisienne Walkways'?

Javi: Ah, it's Gary Moore. Parisienne Walkways. It was really cool, in a rock style. Another one that I remember well and that made a big impression on me was "Haru yo, koi". It's a very different style of performance from "Parisienne Walkways" because it's a Japanese music, but as a skater, I think performing to the music of your own country has a special significance. This programme was not only a great skating performance, but you could feel the emotions Yuzuru expressed in the programme, so I thought it was a work of art.

(Please don‘t share any Javi hate in a direct response to my post. Thank you.)

Hi everyone! I haven't been around as much lately (real life has been busy :() so I haven't been tagging posts as [NEWS] quickly enough. If you post a tweet/instagram post/video that's recent, and it's about Yuzu, please tag it as [NEWS] so it will get quoted into this thread every day! You can look through the thread to see what posts should get tagged as news, and it's also okay to err on the side of tagging anything you think qualifies :D Thank you so much for your help <3

P.S. Tag posts in the Competitions and Ice Shows subforums too!! Thank you!

Continuation of the Yuzu-Javi interview in the FaOI Shizuoka pamphlet, automatically translated with deepL. The first two questions are the same as in the Kobe pamphlet, the rest is new. I have enjoyed this interview very much.

As always, I don‘t speak Japanese and this is not a proper translation.

YUZURU HANYU & JAVIER FERNANDEZ

Fantasy on Ice has not been held for the last two years due to the spread of the new coronavirus. This time, there were already three stages, starting with the Makuhari shows from 27 May, and Shizuoka will be the final venue for the event. The two of them have been thrilling audiences with their wonderful performances at this year's shows. We spoke to Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez, who have participated in previous Fantasy shows as main performers and have been inspiring each other to work hard since the summer of 2012, when they became teammates as athletes, about the attraction and difficulties of ice shows.

Q: Having experienced such a situation, I'm sure you were both really looking forward to Fantasy on Ice for the first time in three years, but I would like to ask you about your thoughts on ice shows. How did you both feel the difference from competitions when you performed in ice shows for the first time, not only in this Fantasy? How have your impressions changed as you have gained experience, and how do you feel this has led to your personal improvement?

Hanyu: To be honest, I liked ice shows more than competitions from the beginning, and I was very happy that people would watch me. So when I skated in this spotlight for the first time, my memories of having fun are more intense than my feelings of nervousness.

However, as I gain more and more experience, I realize that I have to give a good performance, or if it's a collaboration, I have to make sure it's perfect. In that sense, I think I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. But that has also led to good performances. I don't skate just for fun and for myself, but I also need to connect with the audience and skate with responsibility for what I want to express. Now I feel that I can skate with a strong sense of responsibility as a skater in an ice show.

Q: Are those feelings, techniques and expressions transferable into competitions?

Hanyu: Of course they are. But the tension during a competition is quite different from the tension during an ice show. Of course, there are limitations, such as the small size of the rink, but more important is how to communicate to the audience. In a competition, the main thing is communicating to the judges, so there is a big difference. So, it is important for me to convey my feelings in all directions, 360 degrees at the same time. Of course, in the past, I didn't think to that extent (laughs).

Javi: I don't remember my first ice show. My first ice show was probably a small show in Spain, because the kids in the skating clubs are still doing small shows now. But to add to what Yuzuru just said, I was really looking forward to it because the show had a different atmosphere from the competition. There are special effects like the lighting, so I think it's great to be able to enjoy that.

However, the lights always flicker in a show, so I had to get used to that and there were many things I had to learn. But I think it's a great experience for all skaters to perform in a show. Everyone wants to be seen by a large audience. We want people from all over the world to see us and fall in love with figure skating.

Hanyu: Also, in an ice show, you have to show your uniqueness, something that only you can skate, something that will delight the audience because you are the one who skates it. I think ice shows require a lot of that. I think I have learnt that through ice shows, what do you think, Javi?

Javi: I think the best thing about ice shows is that we can be playful and do what we want to do. For example, we can try different things that we wouldn't normally do, such as the style of the music or the program we choose. On top of that, there is no need to do very difficult technical things. We don't have to complicate the steps, we don't have to put in a lot of spins, we can be really open and focus on 'entertaining the audience'.

And then, with the music too, we can choose songs that we want to skate to, or that we think will be really exciting for us to perform. Of course, a show is meant to be for the audience and spectators, but it can also be 'useful for us'.

Q: Hanyu, you have said before that you "push yourself very hard in practice" in preparation for such ice shows, but is there a difference in the way you push yourself for the competitions, or is it more mental, like pushing your mind or raising your spirits?

Hanyu: This time, for this Fantasy, I have been practising very hard, and I have actually lost about three kilograms of weight, and I think I have gained a lot of fitness. But when I'm practising... if I'm practising for a normal competition, I always do the same pattern, like I said earlier, "I think about how I'm going to present myself to the judges". I focus on the same direction in front of me.

But when I was practicing for this Fantasy, I was also thinking about what it would really look from the back side. Then I thought, "Am I really expressing this properly?", I thought about it. It's obvious that it's expressive when you look at it from the front, but I was thinking about how it would look when you look at it from the back. I gave a lot of thought to whether the silhouette was beautiful or not. In that sense, I think it is necessary for an ice show to practice each and every aspect in detail, so it takes a lot of time.

In addition, of course, it is meaningless if I don't jump well, so I am practising how accurately I can perform my jumps, which I learned at the competitions, while also working on small details, such as jumping from the opposite position.

Javi: We were talking about a training program to prepare for shows, weren't we?

Hanyu: Yes.

Javi: Yuzuru is the type of person who prepares very carefully for both competitions and ice shows (laughs). I'm not like that, but in a show, you are closer to the audience than in a competition, and you perform right in front of them. The good aspect of this is that you can sell your character and yourself to the audience, or rather, they can really connect with you. But the negative aspect is that you are right in front of the audience, so you can see their reactions. If the audience's reaction is not so good, I get very scared (laughs). In a competition or an ice show, I just give it my all, but it's different in that way, so it is both fun and scary, which is something that is unique to ice shows.

We have now all FaOI 2022 pamphlet interviews on the Planet, at least as deepL translations.

(Again, please don‘t post any Javi negativity as a direct response to my post. Thank you.)

This seems to be a post about "Real Face" by a Chinese Fanyu, in Japanese.

"In Chinese language, '火曜日 Tuesday' is not used much these days, so when I first heard the song, I was not aware that 8 February was a Tuesday. Now I'm alone late at night, listening to 'Real Face' over and over again, and for the first time I understand really that story of Lu Xun, "The true warrior dares to see the dripping blood."

Interview with Taketoshi Hara, the FaOI costume designer, about the costumes he has created for the Makuhari and Nagoya shows. From Kiss & Cry magazine vol. 44, automatically translated with deepL.

[NEWS]

Spoiler

原孟俊 Taketoshi Hara

Born 1984, Kanagawa. Designer of costumes for numerous skaters, including Stéphane Lambiel and Deniss Vasiljevs. He is also a professional guitarist and uses his musical sensibility to create innovative costumes.

Q: What is your concept for the opening costumes?

TH: Shikao Suga has written a wide variety of songs, but when I saw his live videos, I felt that his roots as a singer-songwriter were in the funk music of the 1970s and 1980s. The opening song, 'Afternoon Parade', has a relaxed atmosphere, but I wanted to incorporate that fundamental aspect of his music into the costumes, so I took inspiration from artists from that time as well as American music shows from the 1970s and 1980s, such as 'Soul Train'. I added some modern elements to it. I also wanted to make sure that the music would fit in with the Fantasy on Ice theme tune that is played before the Afternoon Parade, and that it would have the right  'atmosphere' of the long-established Fantasy on Ice. I imagined a scene where all the top skaters, including Yuzuru Hanyu, Stéphane Lambiel, Johnny Weir, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, are all in the rink and skating with the same choreography, and I wanted to create costumes that would suit them. The design was based on the idea of creating a costume that would be suitable for them.

Q: What were the special features of your opening costume?

TH: For the ice show, we mainly use full stretch material for ease of movement, even for formal styles such as jackets and shirts. The shirts for the male skaters this time were also made of stretch fabric, and we used two patterns, one in gold and one in blue.

Q: Hanyu was gold, right?

TH: Yes, that's right. Hanyu is usually associated with blue, but this time I wanted to make it unexpected, so I asked Hanyu to wear the gold-patterned outfit. I knew that both would look good on him, but he looked great! For the jacket, I incorporated the taste of the European luxury fashion brands I like, and paid attention to the silhouette so that the overall impression is flashy, but the jacket is also classy. It has a tuxedo-like collar, but I tried to find the right balance so that it looks beautiful even when it is open in the front. The pockets and buttons are fake and cannot be closed, but they can affect the jumps, so depending on the skater, snap buttons are attached on the inside and finely adjusted so that they do not spread out too much. Also, the fabric of the jacket looks heavy at first glance, but we use imported thin stretch material with sequins on it.

Q: We also heard that you created the costumes for the collaboration performances of Mai Mihara, Kaori Sakamoto and Keiji Tanaka. Can you tell us about the stories behind the production of each of these?

TH: Mihara's song is "I want to love you so much that the snow melts" by Kohmi Hirose, so I chose a top with a nuance of fur as a winter image. I have the impression that Mihara has a classical, youthful image in many of her outfits, but this time I wanted to add a more mature and modern touch, so I incorporated K-Pop touches to express not only her cuteness, but also her power and inner strength. And Sakamoto's "Kimi ni Serenade" is a song commemorating the 30th anniversary of Hirose's debut and is the theme song for TV Tokyo's "Winter Sports 2022". The image of Sakamoto's 2021-22 season, which included the Beijing Olympics and the World Championships, was inspired by the banquets after the competitions, and was created in the style of an evening gown. I am glad that the short dress, combined with the fact that Sakamoto had cut her hair short, suited her well.

Q: Keiji Tanaka's song is 'Progress' by Shikao Suga, right?

TH: Tanaka's costume is based on a jersey shirt. It's a very famous song, so I was worried about it, but as he has just retired, I thought it was important to give him a new look for the future, so I chose something that wasn't like Tanaka's previous costumes. Also, in terms of the theme of the song, I didn't want to create a costume with too much information, so I kept it simple. At a quick glance, you might think, 'Isn't it a bit empty if it's just this?'. But when Tanaka skated in the costume, the way the soft fabric unfolded was really beautiful. The costume was a perfect match for Tanaka's graceful skating.

Q: Next, tell us about the costumes for the finale.

TH: The finale starts with Hirose's 'God of Romance', so I wanted to show the brightness of J-Pop from the 1990s. Also, Hirose is the 'Queen of Winter' and this song was a commercial song for ski equipment, so ski clothing was also used as a concept. When I first saw the funky boa around the neck, I thought, 'I definitely want to use that' (laughs). It's attached to the collar like a hood, and I was particular about the angle and the way the boa itself is fixed so that it looks good. It is made with a sleeveless top and a bolero-like upper part. I wanted it to be a little genderless, so that both women and men could wear it and look beautiful and lovely.

Q: When Hanyu jumped during the finale, he took off this bolero.

TH: It was unexpected at first when he took off the top, but it was no problem, as it is a basic rule that we never make compromises in the design, even in places that can't be seen. The silhouette of Hanyu without the top was also very beautiful and it suited his slim and graceful body, which made me very happy. The finale is a moment for the skaters to express their gratitude and happiness to the audience, so I'm really happy that we were able to create costumes with a happy atmosphere for such a moment.

Q: How did the performers respond to your creations?

TH: In the beginning, I used to explain the concept of the costumes in detail, but now they are just like "this is what the costumes will be like this time" or "I see, that's nice!". I don't really go into too much detail anymore. But this year again, everyone seemed to like it. The skaters understand everything the moment they put on the costume, so we don't have to tell them in words what we're trying to do - it's all reflected in their skating. Watching them get used to the costumes is like watching a child leave the nest (laughs).

Q: How did you feel when you saw them actually performing in the costumes?

TH: Every rehearsal is emotionally moving beyond words. Designing and making costumes is a lot of work, and above all, you only get one chance for a fitting, a few days before the performance. So, even after the costumes are made, I think "what if the size doesn't fit" or "what if the costumes don't look good at all", but at the dress rehearsal, I feel a sense of closure and think "I've made something good again this year and the audience will be happy to see it". It's a moment when I feel happiness.

Q: How did you feel about the event being held for the first time in three years?

TH: I felt a great sense of loss when 'Fantasy on Ice', which I had taken for granted, could no longer take place. I thought again about what the 'Fantasy on Ice' show was all about. Legendary skaters and current skaters, plus guest artists, acrobats and aerialists... it's really spectacular and special. In other words, Fantasy on Ice is a festival that reaffirms that figure skating is beautiful, interesting and enjoyable, and is a festival of appreciation for those who love figure skating. So I wanted to make costumes that would make everyone feel "We're back!". I'm really happy that the show was held successfully and I'm really proud to be involved in such a wonderful show.

Ok, enough with the spam.

Raison is quite polished already in what we have seen, and I know that in Shizuoka some of that choreo already looks sharper!

Once again, I’m so glad that Asahi is filming all 3 days! We will have at least 4 performances to compare! In better camera work for at least 3 of them we hope LOL

I can’t wait for him to bring it to a full sized rink, Raison looks good, it really deserves to see more audience.
Thanks DW for proving that you still “have” it LOL the use of the pop song for a tortured choreo was a very interesting choice, I liked it.

his interview in Kobe thanks to yuzu_angel on weibo, translated by deepl:

Spoiler

--What I want to achieve at FaOI
In the end, it's all about doing the whole show with all I could, but of course it's not that I can do the same thing every time, but I hope that every time you see it, you'll think "this is different" and "I like it here", and I hope to present a show that people find to their liking. This may sometimes turn out to be a self-satisfaction. For us skaters, although we skate because we want to, we also want to convey what we want to convey, what we want to show, what we "want to show people here". I wanted to convey what I wanted to show, what I "wanted to show everyone here", and to be able to communicate it well and play 150%. That's something like my own goal for this FaOI.

-- About Raison
The choreographer for this show was David Wilson, the choreographer of the show I used for the Olympic performance skate, "Come Spring", and this time I had DW create the basic pattern for me, and then I did all kinds of "this would be better" and "that would be better" and so on with the choreography. "It's all sorts of things... how can I put it, adding knowledge, learning and refining the show.

-Oda: It's really a show that only Yuzuru Hanyu can skate
Yes, it is made to be a show that only Yuzuru Hanyu can skate.

--Oda: (to the host) Really, you'll know what I mean when you look at it, it's definitely an expression and choreography that only Yuzuru Hanyu can't skate.
Well, the clothes, too, maybe you'll see that there's a character who has a deep sense of loneliness, and I think all human beings are the same, including me, the struggle between loneliness and a very pure, pure white heart, and I really want to show that.
I'm really looking forward to it myself, it's really, well, it's a very short period of time, but it's really full steam ahead to get to this point, and it's nerve-wracking to be honest. For me too, as I said earlier, it's a very different show, and I've been very involved in the choreography myself, and it's really a show that's full of details, even a jump, there's a change of timing to match all the rhythms and stuff, and it's really, how can I say it, I hope you'll taste every detail and enjoy it. Because it's a show like dried squid, I hope you'll enjoy it all the time!

It makes perfect sense. That's what it's all about, right? That it's not just a jump, it's part of Yuzu's story, Yuzu's journey. So make room on the boat because there're many of us traveling on it :grouphug:

Are you sure? He has a lot to vent so maybe he's one of the most active ones :10814716:

Someone has already posted, but...

https://twitter.com/marika_yuzu/status/1538207358224318466

I love how he reaffirms himself in each interview, calmly, without excessive gestures, with clear messages. The 4A is still his dream and he's determined to achieve it in front of everyone. Artistry is important in figure skating, but it's also a sport, so he is an athlete. He doesn't give up on his skating. Beijing, he learned and grew from the experience and now he's glad he went.

Spoiler

This time "Raison".

The venue was filled with a strange atmosphere that I had never felt before, one that is hard to describe in words, and to be honest, I could barely walk...

But just for this moment, I make Yuzuru Hanyu the coolest guy in the world.

I am the only one who can sing Raison.

I was able to sing the song while inspiring myself.

It was a precious experience...

OP attended Ikuko Kawai's concert. It seems she will meet Yuzu in September. Maybe it's this event in Tokyo. :dontknow:
