I actually think higher jump is much harder to control due to the possibility of getting yourself thrown off-axis (that also becomes higher). You can see this mostly with skaters who jump huge but do not have really "tight" air position like gabby daleman, midori ito for example. Their jumps are huge but wild. It is easier to control smaller jumps and become more consistent of landing it. Satoko and zhenya are consistent but their jumps are not necessarily huge too. I rmb this Japanese variety show hosted by Mitz and they had Noto-san, Sano-san etc and they compared Boyang and Yuzu's rotations? Smth abt Yuzu rotating faster initially so that he gets more time to adjust for landing? I may be wrong though. #rustymemory

Or Summer Wars OST, Yuzu mentioned before that he likes the movie. All 3 have similar melodies, so can be mixed.
-
Esp since the film itself also has some ties to 311 earthquake, is Japanese but the instrumentation is Western enough.
-
A sudden thought: what if he skates to Kimi no Na wa music...like Goshintai from the OST? He can edit the front part to add a few more highlights (e.g a bit more light percussion) or change one or two of the instruments at certain parts (such as using brass/horn instead of strings) like what a fan recreation of the same track did: He can also remix it or mix it with other Kimi no Na wa OSTs with similar riffs.

That's so cute. Yuzuru seems to be good with children :space: He will prolly want to be based in Sendai since he loves his home so much. Headcanon: what if Nobu and Yuzu hold a class for kids together....
-
I rmb seeing on weibo that when he was still in Sendai (with mushroom hair iirc), he helped to coach a intellectually-disadvantaged boy in skating skills (Im guessing it's like the buddy system of pairing strong students with weaker ones), but he lost contact with their family after the quake. But the boy and his family kept watching him skate on tv and the younger brother of the boy once went to an ice show (i think PIW?) and asked him if he rmbered his brother. Yuzu said yes and was pleasantly surprised.

Exactly my thought. All the "What if skater X didn't do that or that..."-talk is futile in my opinion because skater X did exactly that or that. You can't change the past. (I hope my post makes sense to you. English isn't my native language) As another example from Worlds what ifs... What if Yuzu hadn't had an issue with his combo in the SP? He might not have won with only a 2-point difference in that case... AHAH.

Can't agree more. Little late to this discussion. I also agree that Yuzu's ability to train hard and have discipline is not just a product of Asian (Japanaese) culture---it's intrinsic to him. Having raised two kids in Japan, I can attest to the fact that there are too many different personalities to describe Asians by the "hard-working, never question authority" stereotype :nono: , especially nowadays (and even before). I think it is true that kids may not question authority as much as in some Western countries, but when they are talking with their friends and maybe their parents, there's lots of debating. Indeed, he is hardworking because he is Yuzu, and yes, we cant generalise so many ppl into one fixed mould. The world doesnt run like that. :p (if it was I wouldnt be an irritating passive-aggressive kid when I was younger)

Remember 2015-2016 when he was ahead by a lot of points? What were people saying? The judges were too generous. The scores are an exaggeration. Like, what the heck do you guys want? Ah, for him to leave the competition altogether? Because that's what it suspiciously sounds like. If in doubt, always turn to the old saying: Haters gonna hate, Yuzu's gonna skate.
-
I totally second this :goe: I adore the Empire of Angels mad, the music is epic, catching and not overused. The author of the video did a great job at editing, but I have no idea how the song could be translated into a figure skating program :s_dunno I'd also love something with music from Globus or X-Ray-Dog, E.S. Posthumus and the likes... or maybe Stardust score. Or Hans Zimmer. I love his Dead man's chest score, in particular and I think those may be a bit too epic, though. :s_scratchhead I can dream. +1 for Thomas Bergesen music! Or Ivan Torrent!

I don't mind the high standard, but ACI(gold)-->SC(silver)-->NHK(gold)-->GPF(gold)-->4CC(silver) is not sliding into irrelevancy. Unfortunately, /somehow/ ppl just have a whole new set of standards whenever it's Yuzu, which sometimes works unfairly against him because he is up against a much harsher measuring stick. Yes, they do give him the points when he's at the top of the game, but he has to be /very good/ to get that treatment and not many skaters can maintain tip top condition 24/7, 365 days. And when he is, not down, but just not at the very best, he is penalised, which is fair, but the issue is that other skaters are not treated to the same degree.

I absolutely agree. That's why I  my eyes when notorious conspiracists from the old FF claim that Orser favors Javier more. Where are they getting the ideas from? Was he supposed to ignore Javier's boot problem/complaint at Boston? He can't praise Javier during interviews? Obviously Orser has flaws and is still learning as a coach, but to accuse him of favoritism every single time something goes wrong for Yuzuru...:wtf: Agreed. Tbh we don't know anything behind the cameras - maybe he is favouring one, maybe he is not. It's one's freedom to like/dislike Orser and his approach, but the fact that Yuzu decides to stay with Orser and TCC explains a lot. Not that we can't criticise Orser's flaws, but at least we should respect Yuzu's own autonomous decision. THIS. Also, Yuzu is a grown man and a wise one, there's no need to baby him and act as if he can't protect himself or make good decisions.

Everyone got so greedy. Godlike Yuzu is too addicting. I'll gladly be addicted hahahahah xD

Indeed. The win shows that no one shld count him out of the race. And that a clean and good quality Hanyu is a WR Hanyu despite (I refuse to believe no one can see it unless they are those deniers) evidence of score suppression.

thank you! I assume that at the end when they say 'if he hadnt won WC we'd be questioning if he can deliver under pressure because he hasn't for three years' they mean the two years he hadn't managed to get gold at worlds, despite managing to maintain GPF gold...but, those two years had issues, 14-15 was just...a mess of a season full of injuries and 15-16 he had a major injury when it was time for worlds...in which case it wasn't a problem with delivering under pressure. Though I guess that was the question forming through the season since he had the pressure of the previous season and the weight of next season looming over him... But Helsinki was a nice little reminder to the reckless youth that even if they have higher BV and even if he bombs his short, he can win because he is that much better than everyone else on the feild. Agreed!

LOL he has always been 'deliver(ing) under pressure'. What 3 years? What (3) years? He did well in NHK 2015, GPF 2015, and Worlds SP 2016 and his silver was due to injury. Then he did 4Lo in 2016, won GPF 2016 (fine, not perfect but he's the first guy to do it 4 times consecutively), manages to YOLO his FS layout while under heat, broke FS WR at Worlds 2017 and became 2017 World Champ, he has always had a record of making tremendous comebacks (I call him King of Comebacks sometimes), so idk why ppl always say he can't or he hasn't been delivering under pressure? Who skates with the amount of pressure he has? Name me any other skater. Not Pchiddy, media doesnt hype him that much. Not Javi, Spain doesnt care abt FS. Boyang? China cares more abt pairs and Boyang himself knows he still needs to work on PCS. Nate? A bit more now, but he still has respite from the fact that men's skating just came from depression so the media have merely begun to hype. For him it's just starting. Shoma? Shoma said so himself that he didn't know Yuzu had been bearing so much expectations and pressure until he was gone and Shoma was without a deflector at Nationals. When Yuzu skates, media hypes, oh, will he fall and will the new ace rise, oh is his tine over? Media speculates and tabloids spin yarns. Hosts on tv bait him and everyone waits for him to fall into the pitholes. Federations score against him and push others up. Analysts say 'he can't deliver under pressure'. Antis and people who do not actually know anything about the technicalities of skating spew nonsense about how his skating is nonsense and cannot compare to the "complexities" and "beauty" of other skaters (beauty is subjective, but it shld also be backed up with good evidence and it"s subjectiveness is not an excuse to be blind). He puts pressure on himself. He skates for himself, his choreo, his choreographers, his coaches, his family, Sendai, Tohoku, his fans, the people who have all contributed or helped him in one way or another, and for the future of skating. And he still delivers, and on both sides, the technical and artistic. This is the guy who went from 7th to 3rd at 2012 Worlds while injured. This is the guy who went from iirc 9th to 4th at 2013 Worlds while injured. This is the guy who went from 3rd to World Champ. This is the guy who went to Olys bearing Japan's expectations and grabbed gold. The guy who overcame himself to set the 3WRs anew 2 weeks after he first broke them. And we have ppl telling us that he can't. deliver. under pressure. Someone tell me a bigger joke? (then again, they are US analysts so) It's this type of minute brainwashing that influences commentators, influences analysts, influences the audience and most importantly, influences the judges. Soon, it permeates the skating circles that Hanyu Yuzuru cannot skate under pressure. It's not whether he can, it will become whether everyone has the impression he can. Impressions are poeerful, and impressions are also insidious. I'm sorry if this sounds cynical, but this is how power games are played.

I agree with you on SEIMEI. The music and intensity of SEIMEI as a character was enough to carry the whole thing, but H&L required 'acting' of a higher calibre because 'Yuzuru' and 'Yuzuru's journey' are the characters. It is harder to portray yourself and your life because you are within it and hence will find it more difficult to take an objective perspective of a real and complex person whereas SEIMEI is a fictional character put down on a script and has a finite list of traits that the actor just has to tick off and fulfill. So I feel that Yuzu's acting has also reached another level by proving himself capable of skating it clean AND moving people (except for some judges ahem) at the same time. There were some interviews where he mentioned 'acting', so he is definitey concerned about that. Same...I wonder...but I'm actually glad (despite being sad when I see him being upset) that he has experienced all that he has. Each time he experiences something unpleasant, he gains and grows from it, and I am of the belief (yall may disagree, that's ok) that the trials and tribulations that one experiences are given because one is capable of handling it and something too big for one to handle will not come. (so failure to handle it usually is due to not being able to change perspectives)

Please continue i am greatly enjoying this and i agree, we can probably see more from that program because we know what's behind it. Hahahah xD The only thing I can add further right now would be that he still sees himself as still growing (also because he is humble and self-critical), and I wonder if it might also have influenced the program and cause a heavy focus on the growth part? But idk how much his input and influence was in relation to Shae's, though I know he has always been more involved in his FS. (he is one of the painters in FS, but he seems to also want to attempt to be the painted by Buttle for SP) digressing I also rmb some Chinese fans joking abt how he seems to do well in even seasons, so it's good season/bad season alternating each other, but seems like the pattern can be flushed cos no matter what he thinks, it has been a good season. Hey, he achieved so many things despite the late start!

What a gorgeous analysis! After I read through it the first time, I had to rewatch the program (not a chore by any means!) and follow along your words with the timestamps; it really enhanced my viewing and I feel like I can appreciate the structure more. Also, your conclusions with the nature imagery and parallels between the program with his own journey were phrased so nicely Thank you for sharing! Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad it enhanced your enjoyment of Yuzu's H&L. That program needs more love! As I was doing the analysis, I was amazed at how artistically avant-garde it was in terms of narrative structure. The first half, I suspect, was probably what threw people off and made it "less appreciated", and second half was (as mentioned in the post) much more similar to a typical 'warhorse' with the drama, yet the program never deviated from its purpose of representing Yuzu's journey. It was about growth and taking flight and feeling hope, and then repeatedly seemingly losing hope but regaining it despite all odds, and then it was finally about his dominance and his legacy. Overall, it is a RISE, evident from the post. The overall big picture structure is still within the 6 traditional emotional arcs (see: https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/www.the ... le/490733/) , but because Yuzu chose to embellish the growth part very much, it is so rich in content that people can't see the forest for the trees (AHAH forest imagery) and get so hung up about 'how hard to grasp'/'how seemingly unstructured' the first part was. Tbh, I think he is actually doing a very intimate act by sharing his life and journey and all the bitterness and joys accompanying it. It may sound presumptuous and prolly I am overthinking it and assuming something that doesn't exist, but wouldn't only fans be able to appreciate it fully since we know deeply about his history? That might also be another reason why judges only see the surface and do not have the contextual knowledge for true enjoyment. Good grief I can't seem to shut up, can I?

FYI I said I would post the second music analysis (the hope and legacy one) on tumblr, so here it is: http://the50-person.tumblr.com/post/160 ... yu-yuzurus On the Dashboard it is bolded, but on the blog it is colour-coded (if I'm not wrong). I /might/ do SEIMEI or POTO depending on time and interest. (I will prolly do SEIMEI first cos' I like it more.)

I just did the Global Shapers Community Annual Survey 2017 from the World Economic Forum and one question was 'Please share the name of your favourite role model/leader'. Me: Me: *types in 'Hanyu Yuzuru'* Me:

You're too kind! It's shameless of me to propose it, but what if someone subs it into a vid? If you would want to I can sub it into a vid ^^ (I am no professional but I get by xP) Ooh, thanks, that'll be great! (, says the tech idiot) If it's not too much trouble and only if you have time though.

Mr. Ambesi is very popular here! He is the original "Planet Hanyu" man. the50person, thank you so much for you H&L analysis! I also wrote a small one myself back on GS to a famous poster who originally thought the program was bad (but eventually came around!) and I was also struck by the constant rise and fall of energy within the music. It truly is like a river current, unruly, unpredictable, but always flowing. Analyzing program structures is so interesting, one of my favorite examples is Michelle Kwan's 1996 Salome, the ending builds up and builds up and then cuts to almost pure silence except for a few mysterious, sustained notes. It's musically low energy but extremely high tension, and then culminates in a BANG! with a 3T: Love it. I think big, dramatic music like this would be perfect for an Olympic program. I wonder what Lori would do for Yuzuru, interesting possibilities. "musically low energy but extremely high tension" You couldn't have described it better! Such a juxtaposition is interesting and adds an undercurrent to the performance.
