I'm so glad that Yuzu has such good childhood friends in Keiji and Ryuju. Maybe those 3 can do a reality show of traveling around Japan when they do decide to r****. I loved their interactions at NHK trophy including that interview they had with Akiko (with Yuzuru suddenly sitting in with Keiji and Ryuju's interview).

Where can I find this that interview? I'm dying to see it :snonegai:

I think the 3F will be the third jumping pass forever and ever! J/K. Whether it goes on the second half, well, it barely is in the first half in H&L, with the way it comes after the Step Sequence, so unless he decides to try attaching the 3F to the 3A-1Lo combo, I doubt it'll move from there. In the future, after Oly season, and with one less jumping pass, it may ended up gone, though.

    :smiley-sad016::sadPooh:

that 3F is a thing of beauty

(but I could survive, if Yuzu won't r*****e)

Are there any real chances that he would change his 3A-combos? If he goes for the 4Lz, will the 3Lz stay as well?

  3. I'm still very new to FS, and ice dancing even more, but out of the few ID pairs I've seen P/C are those who really impressed me. What stood out the most to me is how light and delicate they are, how the flow they create embraces them both so they are a whole even without touching. The interview is very interesting and I like their challenging attitude  :agree2:.

I confess I've watched maybe only 3 programs of P/C :embSwan: Actually I'm refraining from start digging for more because I'm already stressed out enough following Yuzuru, I'd like to be able to root for P/C in a more relaxed way:studsmatta:

There's a new translation of Yuzu's interview in the german magazine Pirouette on this Tumblr.

    4Lz (or 4A XD) incoming ;)

Of course we already knew, but I think he had never stated it yet so explicitely before now.

I confess I got a bit teary reading the full article:crybaby:It has been a long and complex season, and Yuzu managed not only to regain his title but also to grow even more as a skater and a person:0001::bow:

(spending hours to chose the emoticons )

(Anyone knows if there is a "proud mama" smiley somewhere among the 30000000000 billions we have? or "proud sister", even "proud papa" would do)

i like "empire of angels" type of music ... so epic :BeatingHeart:

Oh yes, Thomas Bergsen & co :loveshower: (I also love this one).

Beautiful (non-warhorse) epic music, it can easily catch even the most distracted listener (or judge :5:).

What are the chances such pieces could have been really submitted to/already known to Yuzu? It would be funny if he stumbled in his fanvideos,:xD: like the one you linked (by the way I discovered that particular song thanks to that video :girlsigh:) or even this one

Let's start with his feet and his knees. Even if he has a deep knee bend and really strong core, butt and leg muscles to control the impact of his landings, when he lands, often his landing foot is not aligned with his knee which puts stress on his ankle and his knee. The left is an example of correct alignment and the right is an example of incorrect alignment.

    Fig.3-5.jpgFig.3-4.jpg.

Just looking at that photo I can feel the strain :sad-smiley-046:

Thank you Fresca you for your explanations, they are enlightening

I'm learning what is good technique and why it is so important...and why bad one should be pointed out. Too bad skaters' health does't seem to worry ISU (and certain coaches, I may add) that much :banginghead: . The physics of jumps is so interesting, it's amazing to learn how every movement can lead to a certain result :pbow:

  8. Nice musics! There are so many epic soundtracks out there, I think even

would work well, I can picture hydroblade or inabauer around 2.28. Though I'm trying to imagine what kind of costume he could wear... :rofl2:
  9. I wonder if the spread eagle can be still counted as "creative, interesting, original" given how overused it's becoming of late :s_scratchhead

Poor Yuzu. Maybe we won't see the spread eagle sandwich next season?

Spread eagles still count as transition/steps, I think? Though I never see them applied to a solo quad jump except by, well, Yuzu. Usually they're getting attached to the 3As (Shoma, Nathan, Yuzu back in Chopin 1.0).

What I mean is that this new definition

"2) clear recognizable (creative, interesting, original for jump preceded by steps/movements of the Short Program) steps/free skating movements immediately preceding element"

can be very very subjective, more than the "difficult steps" I think? I have no idea, this is why I'm asking. :s_dunno A judge may decide he has had enough of spread-eagles-before-jump from yuzuru. I really hate that GOE points can be bended and twisted so much so to justify even the craziest scores... :hammer:

  10. I came to know about RL skaters because of Yuri on Ice. I am a fan for Jap anime/comics on sports.

There were posts speculating on the RL "prototypes" for YoI characters - that's when I came across the name of Yuzuru Hanyu. But I didn't pay much attention to him then. Out of curiosity I watched 16GPF on youtube. Then my friend (also a YoI fan) and I started to learn about ISU competitions. I wiki-ed about fs 101. I watched Yuzu at 4CC again. Then I started to wiki about him, watching his record-breaking performances & interviews, etc on youtube.

I am sure that you meant no disrespect or offense, but the word or abbreviation "Jap" is considered derogatory and a racial slur amongst Japanese, particularly the Japanese minority living in North America. It was said with a lot of hatred before and during World War II and this negative connotation continued affterwards whenever it was used. Therefore, I would ask that people not use the abbreviation "Jap". It doesn't take that much more effort to spell the word "Japanese".

    (off topic)

I didn't know about this either, thank you for pointing out the issue. It is hard not to slip in "mistakes" in particular if english is not one's first language and it comes to slang or words with a peculiar historical background. I knew only small bites about segregation of japanese people during world war II in USA, but let's say that in my country history classes focuses on Europe much more :-|

So I'm glad that from now on I have one less chance to sound inadvertently rude.

    (back on topic...kind of)

The first time we watched him compete live was 4cc and then Wc. We were screaming and crying and shaking so much ! What an experience! I myself have never been into any sport at all until now...

    I feel you :sadPooh:

Where I live soccer is by far the most popular sport  but I manage to warm into something resembling a supporter only when the national team is playing some big match like semifinals or finals  Still not even close to the level of crazed giggling, jumping and screaming I produce when I'm watching Yuzuru's performances (and I haven't even watched them live...) :sadPooh: :sadPooh: :sadPooh:

That's the effect Yuzuru has on people

  11. Fixing balance and alignment is much trickier because it requires you to develop an understanding of what muscles to engage and adjust to keep yourself in balance/alignment. A teacher can tell you how to position yourself or even move you into the correct position but remembering what that position feels like so you can move into it again or adjust yourself to maintain it is a different matter. To explain, [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCWsIXxcLLw&t=1094s]here is ballet dancer Tetsuya Kumakawa describing to Dai this adjustment.[/link]

The Tetsuya Kumakawa part is very interesting. It's a pity that Takahashi seems not quite followed up his description. I wonder if Yuzu can appreciate it more, because he certainly learned a lot from the talking with Nomura Mansai.

Well Yuzuru is as good at understanding the theory behind figure skating as at skating itself :goe:

His analyses are always a pleasure to read, they are deep and accurate. More so he is very eager to learn more about sport in general. I recall that conversation he had with the gymnast Kenzo Shirai about jumps

(Also: 25 posts yessss! :yay: )

  12. can someone please point me to this drawing? thanks

    I guess they are this

No, Anna's legs and thighs have correct shape for the outside edge. Is this clearer: http://imgur.com/5fibDHP

If you can not see their edge, look at their thighs.

    this

True Lutzers bends their knee to keeps the outside edge and it creates this shape bending shape. While Fluzters always straighten their legs at take off.

Miki (true Lutz) Vs Daisuke (Flutz): http://imgur.com/IAWph7Q

Yes, this is why Gracie is a Lipper: http://imgur.com/pJvVv6s

    and these

this is Yuzuru when his Flip was still meh, this was at JWC 2010, he got flat ! call for it): http://imgur.com/6CdF0gd

You see his outside edge? And even if you do not look at his edge, you see his left leg was not straightened, this was when he's 15.

And look at the close-up here in 2017: http://imgur.com/7FfH7cK

    Gif: https://media.giphy.com/media/LNHRbLTxb6sF2/giphy.gif

You see at the take-off, his left leg was straightened a bit right at the take-off. That's the improvement. That straight leg even just for a half second means it's a Flip. You can feel the motion pulling to the right (and inside). Or you can say his left leg is slightly straightened. So it is counted as an acceptable Flip.

I don't remeber if there was something else :s_scratchhead

  13. I had to chose Yuna because:

1-she was the first who made me search for FS programs on youtube

2-her folder on my pc is the biggest one after Yuzuru's (but Yuzuru's is just huge )

3-thanks to her I decided to check how the Sochi OGMs were faring these days, and this is how I discovered Yuzuru

Her jumps! Her flow! Her fire! Her fire in her El Tango De Roxanne is what has sold me, it was love at first sight

The first lady I liked was Irina Slutskaya. I watched Turin 2006 as a total newbie in FS and she was the one who made the deepest impression among the women: the russian lady in red (also Arakawa's layback InaBauer). I also like Carolina, how soft she is in her gliding and her upper body movements too.

I still have to find that kind of special sparkle with the new generation. Hopefully I will be able to watch the ladies without biting my nails. :acceptable:

  14. I voted only four because I couldn't make up my mind for the fifth

I chose Etude because BluFlames is unforgettable, POTO2 because it makes Yuzuru look...sexy, more grown up then his previous outfits , LGC purple because the song is extra, the program is extra and that costume is so extra, too

Wait, I can't remember the fourth

EDIT how could I forget Chopin??? I love both versions, but I picked Chopin 1 because I just love all that soft soft flowing quality (his sleeves! )

The fifth spot for me is for Seimei-Hana ni nare(the sleeves!)-Notte Stellata-H&L-POTO1-RJ1. I like the asymmetric sleeves of his NDP costume a lot too (maybe I have a thing for sleeves? :s_scratchhead ). Even if some costume make me :omg: they are always beautifully suited to the programs Yuzuru skates, they are part of his aesthetics, so I can't really hate them. :space:

If it were to be R&J3 fierce YH can be Tybalt or Mercutio

    Yes!!! :goe:

He can go for a warhorse without being mainstream  It would be an interesting experiment. Though I don't think the judges would appreciate that much another R&J from him...

I would loveeeee him to skate to Four Seasons (especially to Shoma's short ), Clair de Lune or anything Chopin, especially Nocturne Op. 9 and Spring Waltz.

It's my dream!   I love it so much! It wouldn't be the first time btw

I'd gladly accept almost any classical piece, to be honest.

Well, that was the year of Lambiel's Four season, no surprise young Yuzu skated to that music. And he managed to pull it off quite well :acceptable:

Honestly I am glad he won't (likely) skate to that music, it has been already used quite a lot by top male skaters in the past olympics

I'd prefer something a little more unique.

  16. I'm still in the R&J v.3 bandwagon as far as warhorses gp, the only question is, which RJ? Tchaikovsky? Prokofiev? Judges love Russian composers after all...or maybe that French musical from early 2000s? It got a renewed version in Japan back in 2016...?

There is also another musical version in 2007, "Giulietta e Romeo" from the same authors of Notre Dame de Paris

Personally I prefer it to the French RJ musical. I watched it live, some songs still make me teary when I listen to them. Sadly this musical wasn't a big hit as NotreDame, so it isn't known at all. I don't think it has ever been translated into other languages.

Here are some of my favorite pieces (all in italian, sorry):

the intro sung by Mercutio, who plays the narrator

    the epic fight

me and my sister used to duet on this one, we played Benvolio/Tybalt,it was so fun!

this one is very romantic (again, sung by Mercutio)

it is about love at first sight and how after that sight and thought aren't enough and you need to hear the voice, and touch...

more fights and drama! (Mercutio dies )

very lyrical song from banished Romeo

    more drama!!! Heartache! Romeo dies

(usually I played Romeo and my sister Juliet, don't ask me why... she always kind of bullied me, being the older one  )

No dagger scene in this musical, Juliet dies from heartbreak

It would be a nice change

  17. Actually Shoma's landings sometimes bothers me more. When he does those crazy turns out of his jumps.. it looks really unstable

Lol we don't talk of Shoma's landings here.. or it'll turn into pages and pages of analysis and gifs/videos :rofl2:

Nathan's and Boyang's jumps have room for improvement but it's entirely different for Shoma (as in, he doesn't just 'wobble'; it's much worse than that lol). Tbf his body type might be at a disadvantage compared to other jumpers in the field, but it is what it is and doesn't change the fact that he has rather poor techniques on his jumps

On the other side, I think his body type may help him to save his landings too, as he has a low barycenter and that "soft knee" that allows him to jerk his body in position after the landing. I've heard/read something about this somewhere.

Is having long limbs (like Yuzu or Boyang, who has grown quite tall) an advantage when jumping? I think it requires more control and awareness, so I wouldn't say Shoma's is much at disadvantage, apart from the ability to spin fast. His legs looks very strong, very muscular, so that should grant him a lot of "power" for his jumps. Correct me if I am wrong, I'm still a newbie here

  18. Hi everyone, this is my first post here. Thank you for all your opinions and thoughts.

He surely chooses a warhorse only if he really likes it and feels the piece suits well for his skating style. So I guess it would to be fine with a warhorse too. But if he chooses something different, these came to my mind:

For SP japanese music or a strong classic aria like Una furtiva lagrima by Donizetti or maybe Ombra mai fu (Largo) by Händel. Mainly orchestral versions with some singing in the end of the program.

    For FS a modern song:

    - Alive by Sia ( or Unstoppable, Never give up...) Sia is as strong in music as Yuzu is on ice.

    - Orchestral version of Imaginaerum by Nightwish, played by London Collage of Music. Or Taikatalvi(Wintermagic)/Storytime/Song of myself-mixture.

I think these these songs are so dignified and majestic that they would be suitable for OG too.

    Hi and welcome!!!

I like Nightwish too. There are several songs which have that "dramatic flare" which suits FS, I think, and there are also some instrumental covers of Sia's songs (e.g. with cello and piano) that are just

Too bad in Olympic season the trend is to go for warhorses... Then again, if that is what Yuzu needs to please the judges... :acceptable:

I believe he will own every music he'll choose, he is simply that good

  19. looking back to that one documentary before boston worlds where he was talking about how frustrated he was looking at the plaque and not seeing his name there again makes me so happy that he finally got back his title and is able to see it that his efforts paid off every time he goes to train

especially considering all the times he was doubting himself and saying things like he can't say that he's worked hard

Whenever I watched that documentary I felt so sad because he had lost his chance again and in such an awful way. But now he has the title back, and that plaque to remind him of his achievement. A bit of daily encouragement whenever he feels down, I hope. :pbow: :pbow: :pbow:

That photo makes me smile like a proud older sister :yay:

  20. I don't see a lot of people talk about his one, probably because it was back from his Junior days, but Yuzuru's Mission Impossible SP from his 2009-2010 season was fire

It's a wonderful program, so full of energy, and young Yuzu was so committed to the music

It had a sparkle of that rockstar attitude he would show later on.

  21. Ohhh so many interesting pieces

    Though I must say:

I'm not sure if anyone (or if I) have dropped this here already but I will continue to hype everywhere my desire for epic war instrumental music for a bombastic FS and no better than this album: [link=https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7_8KJvbYl3QZ9UWdyYA6ByWXsu0M9TjS]Sun by Thomas Bergersen[/link], and especially [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izsjRpcgfmk&index=14&list=PL7_8KJvbYl3QZ9UWdyYA6ByWXsu0M9TjS]Empire of Angels[/link]. There have been some MADs made using music from this composer and they're always fantastically epic.

    I totally second this :goe:

I adore the Empire of Angels mad, the music is epic, catching and not overused. The author of the video did a great job at editing, but I have no idea how the song could be translated into a figure skating program :s_dunno

I'd also love something with music from Globus or X-Ray-Dog, E.S. Posthumus and the likes... or maybe Stardust score. Or Hans Zimmer. I love his Dead man's chest score, in particular

    and

I think those may be a bit too epic, though. :s_scratchhead I can dream.
