Is the boy in this pic really Yuzu? If it's supposed to be Yuzu I'm just wondering why the pic looks so old and what's the source.. Or is this supposed to be just a joke

ˆThere's been lots of nice comments about Yuzu in Finnish newspapers I guess because he was the only Finnish singles skater in the competition, a lot of newspaper articles seemed to use comments from Valtter Virtanen. He praised Yuzu saying stuff like "(already in warm-up I could see that) he is in a completely different class from everyone else. An unbounded talent". However, I also thought one of Valtter's comments about Yuzu was kind of salty/just factually wrong and I haven't had the chance to complain to anyone else so I'm just going to use the opportunity He said that Hanyu "has been able to just skate ever since his childhood. He hasn't had to go to school or study much alongside it". This quote was used in the main newspaper (Helsingin sanomat) and a few regional newspapers, and it really rubbed me the wrong way It comes off as kind of condescending, like he thinks Hanyu is successful because he hasn't had to spend time on studying, but it's just not true.. Sure Hanyu isn't a medical doctor (lmao who else in FS is except for Valtter himself), but he's graduated high school, he's enrolled in a uni program that seems interesting and useful for his skating, he seems to take his studies seriously whenever he talks about them. I think maybe Valtter just honestly didn't know anything about Yuzu's educational background, or maybe he's kind of hurt after coming last and wants to find some solace in being more highly educated, but it's just a bit... I wish they hadn't used this quote without clarifying the facts! It's like they're portraying Hanyu as a child skating genius who never went to school and that somehow explains why he's at the top. Yes I can confirm that Hanyulle is just a conjugated form meaning "to/for Hanyu". But Yiziri is just a plain old error, no idea how that got printed. I guess newspaper journalists these days are so busy they don't have enough time to double check everything but still, this is just too much.. Embarrassed for my country(wo)men 😅I swear we have some decent reporters too

I just got home from Helsinki and just wanted to gush a little It was such an amazing weekend, could not have dreamed of a better one. During Yuzu's performances in both SP and FP I started to cry because I was so overwhelmed with both how beautiful it was and how relieved I was for him I was trying to mentally prepare for witnessing a first pancake but no, he did.. that instead. I could see there is still room for improvement in a few places, and Yuzu must be slightly kuyashii for not surpassing 300 points yet, but overall both performances were just incredible. And seeing Haru yo koi live once more after FaOI was amazing, I'm so happy he kept it as his ex. He seemed so happy in the gala too I'm also glad the comp was in Helsinki because I'm originally from Finland despite living abroad these days, so it was a nice excuse to go visit home. I couldn't go back to my hometown but my mum and some cousins came to Helsinki to watch the comp, so we could catch up and have dinner together etc. I also managed to get my boyfriend to come with me although he knew absolutely nothing about figure skating and didn't have that much interest in it In the end he came to see all the events with me and said he enjoyed it, so that was nice. Just overall a lot of very good memories from this weekend! Now I'm very tired after having to catch a flight on little sleep, but of course it was all worth it. Already looking forward to watching Rostelecom on the TV

I'm a bit confused about this sentence - "Hanyu said he didn’t feel the music". Where did he say that? I've only seen the broadcast and the Asahi coverage, but don't remember him saying that in an interview, and doesn't sound like a very Yuzu thing to say. Although it was sort of a first pancake (albeit a very good one at that), it didn't really seem to me that he wasn't feeling it But maybe he did say that, I don't know. It just stood out as something that would have needed a source.

This reminds me of that whole discussion when some fans argued Hanyu is challenging gender norms by using "feminine" costumes and others responded that it's probably nothing intentional because the standards of "masculinity/femininity" are somewhat different in Japan. Personally I agree with the latter viewpoint. Japan simply has different conventions, especially in the arts. Ofc Yuzu's costumes are more over the top than many other male skaters' but I don't think that's because he is particularly interested in challenging gender norms, it's just his style and it's not seen as a big deal in Japan. I mean of course we don't know his personal motivations, but afaik he's never talked about gender norms in any interviews and I don't think it's really an issue he thinks about a lot when choosing costumes. It seems to me that he's in touch with both his masculine and feminine sides and can make any costume his own

I don't really think it's taboo for East Asian athletes to openly compliment each other these days, despite the political tensions (which I know should not be discussed here so I'm not going any deeper into it). That is one thing, sport is another, I think most everyone agrees that keeping things friendly and civilised helps everyone give their best. For example, Yuzu and Boyang speak very highly of each other even though they are from "rival" nations, and I haven't seen anyone have a problem with it. The Yuna-Mao rivarly may have something to do with it (I really don't know so can't really say my opinion), but I don't think their nationalities make it "taboo", the political situation might not be ideal but it's not that bad. Also, sorry in advance if I misunderstood your comment, maybe you didn't mean it like that in the first place.

As a former theatre kid I live for the drama so I'm absolutely loving the mood of these programs Also, count me in the Stravinsky brigade..

I like Otonal a lot, the chord progressions sort of remind me of melancholy folk songs which I like. I agree with someone's comment that the full version sounds a bit dated in parts, but I don't really think that's a problem since it will be heavily edited anyway. Also, Johnny used Otonal for a FP, while Yuzu is planning to use it for SP, so that means the approach to the song will have to be different. Basically Yuzu will probably have to condense the song to its essence, which shouldn't be too hard since it has such a beautiful leitmotif. I think it's excellently suited for that.

Yes please! Yuzu has already done Firebird as a smol mushroom, it would be lovely to see him tackle Stravinsky again as an adult.. Although preferably some other composition

I am so happy about the new programs! I understand that a lot of people were hoping for something more modern like LGC or something like a tango, but personally I love classical music and ballet so.. I'm living for the Nijinsky tribute. Otonal also seems beautiful, although I can't really say much since we've barely seen anything of the programme itself. Really though, Yuzu can do whatever he wants, I'm just so glad he is still skating

Yeah, I don't really think we can deduce anything about Yuzu's present training condition/what kind of jumps he's doing now based on this performance. It was probably recorded right after FaOI ended like you said. This 24hTV is a more like a shiny distraction from the lack of any news

So pretty It makes me sad to think this might be the last time he does Swanyu, given that he probably won't recycle old programs next year. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if he did it again in the future for something like CiONTU, but not often anyway. I love HYK so much, I really hope it will be his regular EX next season, although I would be happy no matter what he did The Yuzutaro segment was cute too I just wish there was more new material! The drought is not quite over yet..

I have to say I'm not a fan of this cover.. The photos look pretty badly put together, and it's really mystifying that there are no women chosen on the cover despite the fact that a lot of very popular and successful ladies participated. Hopefully this cover is a work in progress.. although it doesn't really seem like that

I've got the impression (but I don't remember my sources so forgive me if I'm wrong) that he received a lot of attention at school because he started succeeding at competitions at a very early age, and probably some of that attention was negative. I don't think there was any systematic bullying, but some people might have made fun of him or talked behind his back just because he was doing so well in figure skating. School-age kids can be so harsh, I think any kid who achieves some kind of "celebrity" will always have people who try to mock them for it. But I think most of the attention Yuzu received for his skating at school was probably positive.

I didn't mean to start any mean-spirited speculation, sorry if I came across as too negative It just reminded me of my personal experience because I've used the allergy thing as an excuse to not drink or eat certain things, I wouldn't even really categorise it as a "lie" but more like a politeness thing (especially in Japan where things tend to be so high-context). I also haven't been following FS for that long so I'm (thankfully) not that aware of things haters have said, but I'll try to refrain any health-related speculation now that I know. Not wanting to start any drama

Yeah, honestly I feel like it's more likely that Yuzu says he is allergic to alcohol because that's just the easiest way to express that you really don't want to drink. Like you said, top level athletes have a lot of good reasons to not drink, but even still there might be the occasional pressure to drink at events etc. in which case it's easiest to just say you're allergic. It might also be that he has the alcohol flush reaction, but that's not actually an allergy (it's pretty common in East Asia yet people in this region are also some of the hardest drinkers in the world, esp. South Korea, so clearly that doesn't stop most people..). Anyway I think having a serious alcohol allergy is a very rare condition, so it's much more likely that Yuzu just wants an easy way to get out of drinking, which is completely understandable. Especially in Japan, declining any food/drink that is offered in a social setting can be considered rude so invented allergies are an easy "polite" excuse. I sometimes say I'm allergic to meat because I don't want to explain in length that I'm a vegetarian. Ofc this is just speculation, maybe he really is allergic to alcohol. Anyway when you get down to it, the state of intoxication is a form of self-imposed impairment of the nervous system, so in a way it's literally poison to the human body..

It seems like there's a lot going on with the Chinese fed but they are not giving out much information.. They like keeping things tightly under wraps. It's a bit frustrating but I guess all I can do is to hope Boyang is able to do what he really wants to do for himself.

Yeah, and of course his name can have a mental association with the yuzu fruit for people, especially because the name Yuzuru is usually written with a ず. Japanese fans can joke about it too, but everyone understands it's just homonymous and not what his name really means. Japanese has tons of words that have several different meanings so this is nothing unusual. In Chinese, names need to be written in characters since there is no "alphabet" syllabary, and as far as I know the common nickname for Yuzu there is 柚子 (Youzi) which is literally written in the same characters as the yuzu fruit. (Source) So among Chinese fans the connection would be stronger, but of course it's still just a nickname and his real name is written differently.

It's about which famous/significant moment in Yuzu's career people would like to see one more time. The answer options include first successful quad, winning NHK at 17 in Rifu, Miyagi, Sochi win, first 300+ score, Pyongchang win, and "something else such as Sendai parades, winning poses etc."
