Ah thank you for all the resources, I'll definitely have those on call. My Chinese is simplified so it's not as useful as traditional since kanji is mostly traditional (unfortunately only Taiwanese/Hong Kong use traditional). But my Chinese reading/writing skill isn't very good anyway so it doesn't matter so much Oh I've seen the Japanese lady interpreter in the Helsinki press conference. Interpreting depends a lot on the subject - some people are very considerate and take breaks and others talk for a long time. Yuzu tends to string thoughts together and speak for a long time (and Japanese sentence structure makes it difficult to translate into English because you often have to wait until the end to get the full meaning of the sentence). I was STRESSED FOR HER as he was talking hahaha. Nathan...I wouldn't say he talks like a teenage girl or that he's necessarily excited, but he talks like he's in a rush and has a lot to say. He also tends to speak in quite a monotone so it increases the feeling his words tend to run together. I have friends who talk like this too, and they're usually quite intelligent (in an academic sense) and think very quickly. You can hear the difference between the way Adam and Max tend to talk more slowly and take time to pause and think through their words, whereas Nathan replies very decisively. It might also be because he's nervous (he's still young).

Ah, how interesting! I've always wanted to be a true polyglot and be able to have reading/writing ability. I really admire interpreters so much, especially in high stakes situations like politics - so much pressure! I'd say I'm a fairly fluent Chinese background speaker but I don't have the vocab to discuss complex politics either, or to translate nuances across from English. It's also partly cultural understanding too - like knowing how to use idioms or figurative language to carry over the 'vibe'/spirit of the expression too. It's truly a feat for translators to do their jobs well. I will check out Jim Breen's edict, thank you! I used to use Jisho.org a lot and I enjoy using my phone because I have the written input in Chinese so I can literally trace the kanji and it usually registers. Just listened to Nathan Chen's interviews - he does speak quite fast, though I'd say I've heard teenagers talk at that speed when excited or nervous about something, particularly kids who are quite book smart or fast to react to things. He doesn't take many pauses at all and definitely gives a similar vibe to Yuzu. I also find the American accent (Nathan's in particular) tends to cause people to 'nip' off their word endings, so that's harder to catch too, for interpreters.

Ah I watched that interview and yep, I laughed so hard at the interviewer's tone when he said that and Yuzu's cheeky grin afterwards lol. I assume you're a JP -> Eng translator? I'm always incredibly grateful for the free work that translators do out of love - I couldn't have gotten into so many fandoms without them! As my Japanese skill increased, I tried to translate some things as a way of 'giving back' Yes, I totally understand the paranoia about what a bad translation can do, so I try to be careful and put disclaimers when I'm not sure about something. I usually only use Google translate for new vocab but it can be pretty tricky and unreliable! Thank you, I definitely will in the future~

Honestly, I do it partly because I get amused by things and want to share and partly to motivate myself to practice my Japanese comprehension as I haven't studied it formally in about 5 years (I couldn't continue studying it at university because my degree doesn't allow me to have many elective units). I'm at a level where I generally understand the gist (with some help from Google translate on some of the vocab) but wouldn't dream of saying I could accurately translate line-for-line. Geo1 linking the formal translation I couldn't find earlier (thank you!) is like a 'check your exam answers' situation and good for my learning hahahaha I think I may have gotten 75% in the parts I did translate? I'd love to interact more with the current J -> E translators and learn from you guys though, and your offers to help are incredibly appreciated. Okay, since I already almost finished the Ep 2 translation of Kenji's Room, I went ahead and finished it so I can sleep well at night I was really inspired by Yuzu's account about how he vowed not to make excuses for his poor performances and his observation that strong athletes don't give excuses. Really #lifelessonsfromyuzu but it's something I also want to take on board I'm pretty sure Kenji shares my sentiments because his periodic, vaguely shell-shocked 'へンやん!' summarises my feelings perfectly (like literally it means 'that's weird' in Kansai-ben but also kind of translates into: 'wtf is this kid/wtf are you' and I agree) I'm still blown away by how Yuzu's been set on his Olympic goals for so long, and also the extent of his determination (and confidence) - he emphasises himself that it wasn't a 'I can get a gold medal' but 'I will get a gold medal' and he put in the hard yards and overcame a heightened amount of hardship to get there. I just hope he doesn't have any regrets after Pyeongchang ;;;; /touch wood for no injuries He kind of gets tired here so there were swathes of conversation where he rolled his words together and then just like...stopped making noises at the end of his words LOL I still can't quite catch some of it so I'm sorry for that!

I'm working on a dot point translation like I did for Video 1, it's probably 80% done? So happy someone uploaded it ( : They talk about axels for awhile and there's some technical stuff in there I don't 100% understand (and Yuzu talking fast and then mumbling/trailing off s i g h) but also some really interesting things about Junior Worlds and leading to his senior debut. Will do my best to get a rough translation done soon (and hoping someone properly translates lmao ;;; I don't have 100% confidence in my abilities)

I'm happy he has Shoma to play around with nowadays at competitions too; Yuzu was always kind of in an awkward age gap. Ah thank you for your high praise! My Japanese is really rusty (I haven't been able to formally study it for about 5yrs) so I can only really summarise the general 'gist' of what they said (not so much aiming for technical accuracy). But Yuzu being Yuzu will just act like an overexcited puppy about it and Tatsuki was like the straight-laced ~serious philosopher on ice~ so I'm sure he got trolled a lot. Thank you! He speaks so fast and rarely ever hesitates or stumbles on his words. It's hell when you're translating by ear, though the lisp he had from when he was younger has mostly gone - I had to replay a whole bunch of lines to try and puzzle out the words because they run into each other (you can definitely see Kenji just give up at times and take a minute to sigh loudly and process what he said hahaha yuzu is the definition of 'high energy'). It makes his English speaking voice so hilarious to me because it's so much higher and slower and tends to get mistaken for innocence/cuteness. Like. No. The kid's smart AF and thinks even faster, he's just struggling to translate the billions of thoughts running through his head

The gist of it is that Nobu think it's a nice choice since Yuzu's skating to music he's used to. LGC was an uptempo piece whereas the jumps happen in the slow parts of Chopin so the rhythm of jumps is easier to master than in a fast piece where you may be forced to jump too hurriedly. Yuzu also put the hardest quad in the 2nd half of the program (I can't catch the latter part but I think the general idea is that it makes a bigger impression?). The difficulty has also gone up so if he skates cleanly, he will be able to break his record.

Oh yes, that's what I meant by #relatable. I share a some qualities with him and I'm sure a lot of people here do too, but he takes it to like 10000% Extra level so it's simultaneously awe-inspiring but familiar/endearing : P Also a reminder that you can be more Extra, always

It's been awhile since the interview but I just found the full Pt 1 (there are 5 parts apparently?) interview on Youtube and was going to do a Tumblr translation with some amusing points but I won't if it's already been fully subbed (and if it has been subbed...can anyone point me to where I can find it? : D)
