19th July 2022 = the day of Yuzuru's Statement of Determination (Turning Professional)!

Also called Yuzuru Hanyu Independence Day (　＾＾)人(＾＾　)  cuz he was finally done with ISU&co ୧(ಠ⌣ಠ)୨  And in this vein, also considered a Fanyus liberation (from ISU&co) day... unless you are attached to other skaters still competing, then tough luck for you! But you can still rejoice knowing that Yuzu's happiness, at least, is not in their hands anymore!

24h TV = still gotta compile this entry properly sorryyyyyyy. Basically, a one-day charity TV show held annually in Japan, every year with different theme. It features various segments with various personalities attending in order to raise funds. Yuzuru has been attending every year since 2014, usually 20-minutes long segments in which he usually visits a community recovering from earthquake and then skates one or more of his programs in a local ice rink, for local audience. The settings is usually more intimate than rinks where competitions are normally held, add the meanifullness of the event and you get very emotional performances (´；ω；｀)

Here the 24h tv Yuzu's partecipations, I tried to collect all the subbed &full version, there are more videos in the video section:

• 2014 (visit to Aomori Prefecture, Romeo and Juliet 1.0)
• 2015 (visit to Fukushima Prefecture, Requiem, Hana ni Nare with live singing by Fumiya Sashida and local Chorus)
• 2016 (visit to Kumamoto recovering from earthquake, collab with local skaters, White Legend)

3.11 = the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami), that occurred at 14:46 JST on 11 March 2011.

A pivotal even in Yuzuru's life, he has never stopped advocating for recovery through donations, collaboration with projects like 24h TV, or the NHK Special Exhibition ice show held on Jan9th 2016, photo exhibitions (like A Notte Stellata project), or Tour de Tohoku2019, and using his influence to remind people of how much work still has to be done (while also continuosly sending strenght and moral support to the hard-hit communities).

Yuzuru talked about his personal struggles with the aftermaths of the disaster (including not only the material hardships but also the conflicting emotions of his 16yo self carrying the burden of being considered the "Hope of Tōhoku" and how the disaster reshaped his own views and feelings) in Aoi Hono and also in several interviews and documentaries (especially in 2011-12 season, but also at Sochi Olympics press conference and many more occasions through the years).

4CC = Four Continents Championships, or where Yuzuru used to take the silver (see 4CC curse).

It's like Europeans, only for the rest of the world (hence the name).

Usually, it's held between Euros and Worlds, so the biggest feds with many skaters might send a (partially)different team there (so skaters going to Worlds don't get too tired). AND it's a pretty recent competition, so it doesn't have the same reputation of Worlds or Euros (or even GPF).

This doesn't mean sometimes 4CC can't be as interesting and lit as Worlds (see Men 4CC17, also dubbed "the World Championships without Javi". Also see 4CC20 Men's SP, notable for the several clean performance in last two groups! And a new WR by Yuzuru!).

4CC curse, 4CC Silver curse = Before 2020, Yuzuru had competed in 4CC 3 times, all 3 times he had ended with silver.  ^_^"

BUT fourth time the charm! At 4CC 2020 Yuzuru not only broke the curse, but he also set a new WR in the short and completed the Super slam!

A Feasibility Study on Utilization in Figure Skating by A Wireless Inertia Sensor Motion Capture System = the title of Yuzuru's graduation thesis! or maybe just of the article that was published, based on part of the thesis??? I'm not sure

In 2013, before winning his first OGM, Yuzuru enrolled in Waseda University, department of Human informatics and Cognitive Sciences (e-school, since he had already relocated to Toronto). He kept studying through his 2014 and 2018 OGMs and countless other FS achievements, following courses that spanned a wide variety of subjects linked to how human beings work/interact with their environment (both from a physical and a psychological standpoint), informatics and more. Some of the subjects Yuzuru mentioned through the years are Ergonomics, Programming and Bioethics. Read this interview released in 2021 to learn more about his mindset, what pushed him to chose that particular field, the challenges of e-learning and what he gained from his studies  ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Yuzuru graduated in September 2020, with a thesis exploring the application of motion capture technology to figure skating (in particular, jumps, but also, in perspective, the possibilities of employing AI to both skaters’ training at large and FS scoring).

Part of Yuzuru's thesis was edited and published in the Waseda journal in Japanese. Here you can find an unofficial fan translation into English!

ACI = Autumn Classic International. A minor competition held in Canada every year in September. Usually, it's part of the ISU Challenger Series so 1) it gives ranking points for World Standings and 2) skaters' scores are recognized by ISU and can count as SB or PB (and if you've had a WR skate, that one counts too!)

In the last few years it's been Yuzuru's warm-up competition (the first of his season) and the source of many gorgeous photos and fancams. Also, NEW COSTUMES REVEAL, YEAHHH!

If you're lucky you get to enjoy a WR like Yuzu's ACI17 SP.

If you're unlucky you may have the dubious honour to witness Yuzu's pop concert. But if you are watching Yuzu live in the first place, you really have nothing to complain about! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Adorkable = adorable + dork. basically, Yuzuru.

Alien = Yuzu, obviously. He has his own Planet, from another galaxy Of course Yuzuru is only human,  but he is a very special human being.

WARNING:

A Notte Stellata project, or "Tomo ni, Mae e (Together we move forward): the 3/11 Disaster - That day, and now" = the Hanyu Yuzuru exhibition for 3.11 earthquake that started in Dec 2020.

It commemorates the anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Here for further details on the exhibition.

Among the merch one could buy at the exhibition, there were NS, Requiem and Étude themed items for daily life, like small mirrors and hair scrunchies, but also items useful in emergency situation, like solar lights and hand crank radios.

ANA (All Nippon Airways) = Japanese airline company and Yuzuru's main and oldest sponsor. Yuzuru's affiliation contract with ANA started in July 2013, so before his first GPF title, when he was a very promising challenger but still without a major international title. In hindsight, they made an excellent investment. (´∀`)b

According to available info, ANA covers most of Yuzu's training and travel expenses, but fans appreciate ANA beyond that: they've been supporting Yuzuru through the provebial thick and thin, e.g. after Boston, ANA had this message printed out in newspapers <3 (it doesn't hurt that the fans who travelled with ANA enjoyed the service, too)

At J.Nats 2020 (where skaters' affiliations are listed next to skaters' names and appear on their jackets, vs international comps where instead they all wear the TJ jackets) Yuzu was mindful to show his support for ANA (a pandemic is not good for airline business, obviously).

His logo with the wings on his back and the Fly Yuzu motto are very cute! Also, the Hello Blue, Hello Future CM is one of the best Yuzu ever did. o(*°▽°*)o

Annual silver quota = Since 2013-14 season, Yuzuru has a tradition of getting 2 silver per season, regardless of the number of competitions he attends. Our boy is super-consistent!

In 2013-2014 two GP events (but then he swept GPF, OWG and WC gold).

In 2014-2015 COC and Worlds.

In 2015-2016 at Skate Canada and Boston Worlds

In 2016-2017 again Skate Canada GP and then  4CC (but then he got back his World title)

In 2017-2018 he attended only 3 comps, and, guess what, he got 2 silver medals. But hey, he got the most important gold of the whole quad, so who cares!!!!!!!

In 2018-2019 he kinda broke the curse (only one silver)...

....BUT in 2019-20 he got two silver medals again...

2020-21 season has has been all messed up because COVID, but Yuzu entered 3comps and got no silver (a case can be made for Yuzu getting silver at WC, but ISU chose otherwise) so I've decided that this curse doesn't count anymore ┐(￣ヘ￣)┌

Antenna = that stubborn strand of Yuzu’s hair that likes to spike on top of his head. A theory is that our favourite Alien uses it to communicate with his distant planet… or connect with us fans (Yuzuru says he can hear us, after all LOL)

Aoi Hono (or Aoi Honoo, translated: Blue Flames) = Yuzuru's autobiographies.

The title refers to Yuzuru’s Étude costume, featured on the cover of the first autobiography (learn the meaning behind the name here). (*´︶`*)

There are no english official translations of the two Aoi Hono volumes yet, but full fan translations are available! Since the project had charity purposes (the royalties from the books are donated to Ice Rink Sendai), translators choose to share online only partial translations. To get access to the whole translations, it's required proof of purchase (by first hand experience, I can say that it's easy to do, and worth it):

      Aoi Hono I was published right after WC2012 (Yuzuru's first WC medal) and recounts Yuzuru's first encounter with skating, his earlier career and senior debut, then the Earthquake and its aftermaths for Yuzuru - both material and psychological - till WC12.

      Aoi Hono II was instead published after Boston2016 and it covers his move to Canada, the first OGM and all the new challenges it opened (plus some rather gruesome recounting of his 2014-15 various injuries and health problems) and his lisfranc injury leading to Boston2016. It ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, since back then Yuzuru himself didn't know when (or even if) he would fully recover from injury...

      After OWG2018, Yume wo ikiru was published: it's a collection of various interviews published in IceJewels between 2015-2018, but we're still waiting for Aoi Hono III...

The awkward middle child = Zuzu, the Alien of men FS. At the height of Men's skating (2015-2018, when different generations of skaters and different concepts of figureskating cohexisted and thrived happily), he was too young to be an Uncle but he had already won too much he wasn't young enough to be a Quadster. Also see sQUAD.

Baldzuru = this look from the movie The Magnificent Nine, where Yuzuru has a cameo as the young Lord of Sendai (as he should!). Also referred to as eggzuru.

Bazooka = kind of a gun shooting t-shirts, used for example during ice shows half-time break. It's totally harmless! Ci

Beauty blogger Yuzu = Yuzuru, who (briefly) run a beauty blog. Or at least it was supposed to be a beauty blog, but his beauty advices were more like "sleep well" "relax" "have a nice time"... Well, it still worked!

Besti squat = a move similar to the Spread Eagle (feet turned out in opposite directions, aligned) but where skater squats down instead of staying upright. Here and here Yuzuru demonstrating the move (and looking absolutely cool while doing it)!

Unofficially named like this because it was Natalia Bestemianova's signature.

Besti squat isn't exactly a Yuzuru's signature move but he employs the move regularly. Though the besti squat following his opening 4Lo could be considered one of Origin signature moves (together with the archer move, the violin move, the 3Lz out of stsq, the IB...). (´∀｀)♡  A few Origin besti squat pics: here and here and a rare shot from behind (I swear there's more, in particular with Origin 2.0, but when I search stuff I never find it sigh)

Cabbage costume or also Sparkly Cabbage = see Sparkle Salad. The colour and style of the Requiem costume remind some people of...cabbage. But a very lovely one, I'm sure. (x)

Cactus / cacti = us satellites when suffering prolonged Drought (our fabulous cacti moodboard. Which cactus are you?)

backstory from @Hydroblade: we are like plants, surviving on Yuzu/Yuzu news, so when there's no news we enter a period of drought. Since there are times when this drought is unexpectedly long, we evolved to survive in low water/low moisture environments, turning into cacti!

Canadian Silver Curse, Canadian Silver = before his 9th senior season, Yuzuru had competed 3 times in Skate Canada GP and he had gotten... 3 silver medals! In 2017-18 he hadn't planned to skate in Canadian GP event, so he fulfilled his annual Canadian silver quota at the ACI event instead

Yuzuru has effectively broken the Canadian silver curse in 2018-19 season, when he got gold in ACI and then WD from the only remaining competion he was set to attend in Canada Then in 2019-20 he finally won GP SC GOLD, skating the best he had ever skated that early in the season!!!

Cantilever = a particular Spread Eagle variation (feet turned out in opposite directions, on outside edges) where the skater squats and leans backwards, with or without supporting themselves with their hands. It requires enourmous core strenght! (though physics might favour those people whose centre of gravity in that cantilever position isn't too far off backwards).

The move was invented by ice skater Werner Groebli , "Frick" from the comedic duo "Frick and Frack" in the old ice show "Ice Follies". Here vintage footage of cantilever used as comedy element by Mr Frick himself!

The element, very distinctive, can be a signature move, e.g. Shoma Uno, Alexandra Trusova (how cool that cantilever into spin!). Not Yuzu's fave move instead (*ﾟﾛﾟ*) though he did try it in practice, e.g. SC2015 gala practice (thank you Fay for finding the vid!)

Career Super Grand Slam or Super Slam = when a skater wins all major junior titles (JGPF+JWC) and all major senior titles (GPF, 4CC/Euros, WC, OWG). Guess who was the first Men's single skater to achieve that? (ok, Plushenko and Yagudin were unlucky because JGPF didn't exist back then... oh well, too bad for them)

Carrot = underrotation (see UR). In protocols it's marked with a  <  next to the jumps, hence

Carrot cake = when there are LOTS of underrotations, so protocols are filled with...carrots. (>_<)

CoD or COD = Combo of Doom. It's 4S3T combo, dubbed like that during 2016-17 season because of how it misbehaved >_<

It started being problematic in the FS, then it started giving troubles in the SP too, but it was renamed to "the beauty" after Helsinki FS (WTT 2017 SP doesn't count ). Strange enough, in 2017-2018 4S3T was there when 4T and 3A were being fussy (ACI 2017 FS, OWG 2018 FS). When on, it is indeed a beauty (°◡°♡)

Continues With Wings (CWW) = the first ice-show produced by Yuzuru, or "how to make all of your fanboy dreams come true, Yuzuru Hanyu edition". Kidding!

It was held on April 2018 and it was meant as both a celebration of Yuzu's 2nd OGM and a chance to say thank you, to share and to pass on what he inherited.

The format was different from that of usual ice-shows, but it was amazing. Here's what a non-japanese FS commentator tweeted about the show, because why not

The guests were skaters who have inspired Yuzu throughout his skating career. Basically he made his idols skate for him in his show. (≧◡≦)

The shows also included a Question&Answers corner, skaters talks, a let’s bully Mura technical corner and a let’s make everyone squishy children asking questions corner.

Unexpectedly, Yuzuru (who was still undergoing rehab after his ankle injury from NHK17) skated to medley of some of his junior&senior programs, and wore costumes from his very first senior years! Σ(°ロ°)

It was an all around memorable event with a very giggly Yuzu. And here and here the threads on our Planet (and if you haven't watched all 3 days of the show yet, what are you waiting for?)

Cooldown = literally what the word says. Why make an entire entry about it then, you ask? Because Yuzuru's cooldowns can be mesmerizing, soothing performances on their own! (and are integral part of why fans want to watch practices too!)

Yuzuru's cooldown (here an example) often features besti squats, deep long-held edges, spirals, beautiful lines (that make for beautiful pictures e.g. here, here and here), graceful Yuzu in general and at times a billowing TJ jacket (and maybe gloves tucked in a way that vaguely resembles the fluffy tail of a cute rabbit XD). Blessing everyone with the most magic cooldown ever at GPF19 ("most magic ever" because I was there too and can't stop obsessing about it sorrynotsorry. Cryptid = a creature that might exist, but we don’t know if it exists. Just like Nessie. Or a certain ninja space kitten masking himself as Swan when he's on the Earth (but still using his antenna to communicate with his alien planet). Crystal fairy, Crystal candy = the costume Yuzu wore for Crystal Memories. The name is pretty straightforward, and indeed the nickname was an instant hit! The costume has also been described as a lamp (x) or a disco ball, 'cause it's sooooo sparkly! it might be also referred to as as white salad (x), in analogy with Sparkle salad.

Crystal Memories = one of the two collaboration exhibition programs Yuzu had with ToshI in FaoI 2019. The program was choreographed by David Wilson and Yuzu skated it for the first time on FaOI2019 Makuhari day2, which also was David's birthday!!

Yuzuru said he thinks Crystal Memories and Masquerade are like twins (*˘︶˘*).｡.:*♡  and the fanartists loved the idea (see here and here and here and here and here).

Cuteness overload = that feeling that overwhelms you and makes you squeal as if there was no tomorrow because of one (1) adorkable boy  (´꒳`)♡

CWW = the (less cute) acronym for Continues With Wings.

Delayed jump = a jump where skaters keep a loose air position and then pull into tight position later in the jump trajectory (when you want to make multiple revolutions you want to get into the tightest air positions as soon as possible so you can rotate faster). The dynamics are the opposite of a pop (where skaters unravel earlier instead).

It can be purposeful (like Yuzu's delayed 1A) or part of skaters' way to do a jump (and in this case it sometimes it could even become detrimental, read about delay in rotation here). Yuzu has delay in rotation on his 4 Lz.

When on a multiple-turns jump, it is a difficult feature and it used to be awarded in GOE (under old bullet for arm variation/delay in rotation).

DG = downgrade. When a jump is missing more than ½ of its last rotation, its BV is "downgraded" to the BV of same type of jump but with one less rotation (e.g. DG triple --> double). See also: Double carrot.

DOI = Dreams on Ice.

Dory also DoryYuzu or DoryZu = the costume Yuzuru wears for his EX Wings of Words (FaOI 2018). See also Yuzudory, Yellow duster for alternate names (yes, it was a particularly inspiring costume). Being thw song an opening theme for Gundam Seed Destiny, probably the costume was meant to reference the anime, but someone noticed the peculiar colour pattern and design resembled that of some tropical fishes ...and Dory from Finding Nemo (well, birds' wings and fishes' pins aren't that different, right?).

Well, at least Yuzuru was happy ┐(︶▽︶)┌

Double carrot = Downgrade. When a jump is downgraded, it's marked as  <<  in protocols, hence

Dreams on Ice (DOI) = a Japanese ice show that usually features several TJ senior skaters + promising novice&junior skaters. Traditionally, it would involve a mostly Japanese cast, though there have been guests skaters from other countries in the past.

As an iceshow, it's more sober than flamboyant FaOI (same producers) and even compared to trying to be like those NA iceshows SOI, but it can still be very cozy and lovely. ( ◕▿◕ )

Yuzu used to attend it routinely (2008-2015), till when his lisfranc injury made him skip all iceshows in summer 2016. Afterwards, he has attended fewer ice shows (usually just FaOI). Yet summer 2021 marks Yuzuru's comeback to DOI!

He debuted his iconic Ballade SP in DOI2014 and then SEIMEI in DOI 2015. DOI 2015 was also when he(together with Mura) tried 4A for the very first time (see Nessie).

Will Yuzuru debut a new program in DOI2021???? w(°ｏ°)w

July 2021 update: LOL NOPE, fanyus kinda trolled themselves this time. But Yuzuru said he's chosen the music for his SP, so there will likely be a new program!* For DOI, instead, he brought back Masquerade. (⊙◇⊙)

Drought = what hits us fans when Yuzuru goes hiding into his cave It means we need to survive on archived material (which is A LOT, but we are a bit greedy)

The Great Drought = what the fandom has gone through most of 2020. The Great Drought started unexpectedly right after 4CC2020, when WC2020 were cancelled. It continued in summer with the cancellation of all the ice shows, no media day in August, no program reveal (not even a small hint on whether new programs were planned at all!), no costume reveal and no ACI in September, and, after Yuzuru's withdrawal from GP series, no autumn competitions, either. It ended only in late December with Japanese Nationals, so we've got 10 whole months basically with no watering. Luckily, the Great Drought was occasionally interrupted by a our benevolent overlord dispensing us a few raindrops (otherwise known as Yuzu crumbs) to ensure our survival (＾▽＾)

Jokes aside, Yuzuru doesn't owe us any update on his whereabouts and activities, but it's nice to get these small bits of news once a month or such.

EC = Euros = European Championships, or where Yuzu can't compete ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Eggzuru = Yuzu costumes-inspired decorated eggs, or it might also refer to baldzuru.

Encore = sometimes, in gala, after their EX, skaters get to do an additional ~30seconds/1minute of a program of their choice (SP or FS). Traditionally, all the gold medallists in competitions held in Japan, like NHK, WTT and JNats, get to do an encore. Sometimes there are encores in iceshows too.

Among the encores: SEIMEI in Requiem costume; PW in Hana ni nare, RJ1 and Ballade costume; Origin in Masquerade and HYK (5:50 mark) costume; LGC in Swanyu and Ballade(here at 1:21:00 / 81:00 mark); LMEY in HYK and HwS(former Believe)costume; NDP in Raison costume (cut, and here timestamped in higher res. Yes, I know I still gotta add entries for both NDP and Raison oops) (´∀`)

It's amazing to see how swiftly the mood switches in the encore compared to the EX!

EX = see Exhibition program.

Exhibition program (EX) = Any program not skated in competition (see SP, FS) is an EX, though the divide between competition programs and exhibition programs can be blurry (sometimes skaters adapt their SP or FS to EX, or an EX can become a competition program).

How to spot an EX at first sight:

1) skated in gala lightings (dark arena)

2) not structured as competition programs (usually fewer jumps, with less rotations/variety, more freedom in the choice and distribution of elements like spins and moves in the field, presence of prohibited elelments like backflips...

3) skaters wear black (ﾉД`) Not the most visible colour in gala lightings, but it looks like many (especially the guys) think that wearing black is mandatory Gala attire (￣д￣) To be fair, FS costumes can be expensive, so one gotta cut costs where possible... but could y'all please wear something that makes you easy to see under gala lightings?? (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞

Explosion = what happens whenever there is a Yuzu sighting  It means you leave the Planet for a moment and when you're back there are dozens and dozens of new posts out of nowhere But don’t be scared, if you dread catching up with +50 pages there is this thread where news and new content are compiled! And you can scour the media subforum for lots of sources compiled by fellow satellites!

EXTRA = Yuzuru's whole existence! ᕙ(`▽´)ᕗ

Affectionate way fans refer to his penchant for chaos, certain unexpected coincidences happening in his life, or also, that he's always doing A LOT more than what is required/expected/rewarded. Examples:

• Yuzu getting the 1000th gold medal in the history of OWG, because Universe knows who's the GOAT!
• Yuzu when lip-syncing
• Yuzu unnecessarily complicating things for himself by choosing to stick to his vision of "jumps as part of choreo", even if he gets literally 0 rewards for that (aside his own personal satisfaction and our endless love&admiration)
• Yuzu giving us second-hand embarassment when he exclaimed "tabete kudasai !" on national tv
• Yuzu going for jump sequence like 4T3A despite BV being criminally low compared to its difficulty (of course ISU realized their rules for sequences were ridiculous only 2 whole seasons after Zu jumped that sequence...)
• Yuzu wilding in group numbers and iceshows! ୧(≧∀≦)୨
• Yuzu choosing to do, in TenChi, 4S into 3A2T (instead of backloading all his combo as usual) into 3Lo (instead of the more BV-worthy 3Lz or F he's always done) because it fits the music more
• mindblowing coincidences like this
• Yuzu choosing to quicken the tempo of the chsq music for SEIMEI 3.0 so it fits the new requirements for FS duration (30seconds less than original SEIMEI), but without cutting down any element of the iconic chsq :D

Fanboy = basically, Yuzuru with Plushy. Or younger skaters who are unapologetical Yuzu fans! Gotta say that the Yuzu fanboys have flawless taste, Yuzuru is not only an otherwordly skater but also such a great role model and caring senpai <3

Of course there are fangirls too! And not only skaters, young athletes in other sports too have talked about how Yuzu inspires them!

Fantasy On Ice (FaOI)= Japanese ice show with 3-days stops in multiple cities across Japan, featuring many skaters, cheesy opening and finale numbers with weird costumes that we love to hate and hate to love, collab programs with guest musicians&singers and a very happy Yuzu. (≧∀≦)

In the last few years Yuzuru has been the headliner of the show (he only skipped 2016 because of injury and 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled because of covid.)

Fanyu = Fan of Hanyu.

WARNING: it was born and is still sometimes been used as derogatory term, so some fans are not comfortable with using it or don't want to indentify themselves with it. Here some context from 2017, the term has become a lot more popular since then. Others use it with pride, as a reappropriation. Sometimes fanyus themselves use it in more sarcastic/joking context, like “we evil Fanyus”, “the power of Fanyus!”.  Take a look at how things meant to disparage can actually become entertaining... First GP Silver Curse = since season 2012-13 and up till season 2018-19, Yuzuru had always and without failing been getting silver at his first GP event He is a slow starter, he usually peaks later in the season. Still, kuyashii.

Yuzuru magnificently broke the First GP Silver Curse at GP Helsinki 2018, setting 3 new WR scores under the new scoring system as a bonus ヽ(>∀<☆)ノ

First pancake = Brian’s way to warn everyone that things like ACI 2017 can happen: in his first competition of the olympic season, Yuzuru set a new WR in the SP... and then he proceeded to bomb the FS, fall on his beloved 3A included (￣ヘ￣)

Yeah, following Yuzu is a rollercoaster, you never know what comes next...but it's always worth it!

The source of this brilliant metaphor is Brian Orser, before ACI 2017 started. Here's a quote (thank you @Gladi) : "I always talk about how “the first pancake is not well done.” The right heat, the cooking time, how to coordinate, et cetera––the first competition is for us to learn all these things, to see the good side and the bad side. So it’s rather that we’ve reaped huge rewards."

Sometimes we got some truly excellent SP&FS "first pancakes" debut, namely JNats2020 and JNats2021 (both comps Yuzu took part in amidst huge uncertainties, between COVID and skipping autumn comps because of covid or injury and basically self-coaching while training in solitude in Sendai)

Flowy Do-S = the FaOI 2019 Kobe&Toyama OP costumes (here a whole clip, so you can really understand the brilliance of the costume of the name!

The name came to be because, while we were dying waiting for actual pics, it was described as "Masquarade leather meets HYK fluff"

FP = Free Program, see FS (2nd definition, Free Skate)

FS = Figure Skating, the sport Yuzuru loves <3. FS is also acronym for free program, so be careful about the context!

FS = Free Skate, or Free for short, also known as Free Program (FP), Long Program (LP), and FD(Free Dance) for Ice Dance events. Program that's performed in competition (usually the second and longest segment of a skating competition). It was supposed to be...well, "free" (or more free than the SP), with more chances for skaters to "perform" and wider range of choices for layouts, but right now skaters actually have more time(and energy) to perform in the SP, with FS usually being where the lack of skating content inbetween elements is more glaring.

For Senior Mens', a free program is 4 minutes long and it consists in 7 jumping passes (3 of them combinations), 3 spins, a step sequence and a choreographic sequence, each with certain requirements. In the years both duration and requirements of the free program can change quite a lot: for example, up till 2017-2018 season, Men's free lasted 30 secs more and had one more jumping pass, but it was shortened in part to shorten competitions and better fit into TV broadcasting schedules (￢_￢;)

Ghana = a Japanese chocolate brand that Yuzuru endorses. A few CMs were filmed in an ice rink, one even features basically whole LGC (and the sounds of his blades! here the behind the scenes where you can enjoy the full thing), but more frequently Ghana campaigns feature cute Zu (usually wearing red, but not always) doing things like decorating cakes, making hot chocolate... Yuzu seems very fond of Ghana chocolate (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧

Global muse = his sponsor KOSÉ was so happy with how well Zu was doing as Sekkisei brand ambassador (despite the man candidly admitting he had no whatsoever skincare routine XD)§ that in early 2020 they launched a further campaign designating Yuzuru as their "Global muse" (*•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

Sadly Covid hit, but Zu is still Sekkisei brand ambassador in 2021. Also, Zu's competition costumes are so gorgeous that they just use competition‡ pictures or footage for their marketing... and it WORKS!

GOAT = Greatest Of All Time. Otherwise known as Yuzuru.

Kidding(or not)! It’s fine if you think Yuzu is a GOAT in figure skating, and it’s also fine if you think he isn’t. People have different parameters and different opinions. Yuzuru is one of the greatest in his sport, that’s for sure, and he has already written history, but what matters the most for your experience as a fan is what he is for you.

Gold = what Yuzuru likes!

GP = Grand Prix, each of th stops that comprise the GP series. Senior GP series currently has 6 stops, the order changes every season: SA, SC, RC, CoC, NHK, the one in France that keeps changing name. During 2018-19 season CoC wasn't held, so we got the amazing GP Helsinki in its place.

GP series = I'm lazy so just gonna drop the wiki page, sorrynotsorry. You just need to know that it's held in autumn, usually late October-November, one stop every weekend, six events + the final.

GPF = Grand Prix Final, where top qualifier of the six GP stops get to skate agaisnt each other. It's the biggest even in the first half of the skating season. Usually around Yuzuru's birthday.

GP Helsinki = where Yuzuru broke his first GP silver curse and set 3 new WR under the new scoring system. Also known as a Yuzucon, where Yuzu fans meet and exchanged gifts and just did what Yuzu fans do best (meaning, having tons of fun all together!) 〇(＞∀＜)〇

Grabby hands = our default mode when Yuzuru pictures, videos, interviews, merch pop up. We want them all! Here a yuzumoticon as visual example:

H&E = Heaven and Earth, see Ten to Chi to.

Hair Loss = what we experience when Yuzu is just... being Yuzu. Like when he says he isn’t training difficult entries for his jumps yet but he's been already jumping counter-3A. Or that he can’t still train 4A properly while one month before he wasn't even allowed to do any jump... Or when he drops the Quints talk.

Hana wa Saku (HWS) = it means Flowers will bloom and it's the title of Yuzuru's EX to the homonymous song that was produced to support recovery from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

Here a version of the song released in 2018, entirely sung by Japanese olympians, including the FS team for OWG2018 (no subs. Also, don't be mislead by the title, Yuzuru does not sing in this video!) and here a multilingual version with english subs. (´｡• ᵕ •｡`)

The program features, among others, gently holding a flower (symbol of hope and rebirth), sit twizzles, lots of SE and IB and also a gorgeous laybackIB gorgeously transitioning into a gorgeous insideIB (see Ina Bauer).

The singer of the version Yuzuru skates to is Fumiya Sashida, who also sings Hana ni Nare. Here to see a special Hana wa Saku performance + Yuzuru's thoughts on the program + behind the scenes  with Fumiya and with Yuzuru's former coach Nanami Abe, who choreographeed the piece.

Yuzuru skated to this EX for the first time in 2014.

He chose to skate to HwS for WC2021 EX in Stockholm (and then WTT21): usually, he skates to programs with jpn lyrics only when in Japan, but he wanted to skate to Hana wa Saku as a message of strenght and hope for everyone during the pandemic. ( ´ ω ` )

the Hanyu Axel = Yuzuru's signature back counter 3A. Below you can admire the very first one ever landed in international competition (video source):

It's about time we rename 3As with this particular entry after Yuzu, because:

1. he was the first skater landing it! (*•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
2. he did so at 16yo! :O
3. it's a very difficult entry! Counter is one of the "difficult turns" listed by ISU. Yuzu's entry is a counter from Left Backwards Outside edge into Left Forward Outsid edge (hence, back counter 3A). LFO is the entry edge for 3A (for counterclockwise jumpers), so Yuzu launches into the 3A off that forward edge directly! The difficult entry is not only preceding the jump, it's part of the take off itself!
4. back in the earliest years (pre Sochi) commentators would rarely point out the difficulty of the entry or would misidentify the counter for e.g. the easier 3turn ( ￣＾￣) So the FS community clearly needs some serious information campaign! looking at how the element get scored at times, it's legit to wonder whether certain judges are actually any better than those commentaros at recognizing steps&turns...
5. Yuzuru has been doing backcounter3As for 10 years now!～☆ He routinely uses it in his EX programs too, and even in iceshows opening numbers!
6. He even used backcounter as entry for his last(!!!) jumping pass in his Origin FS(!!!) (3A1Eu3S jumped and landed on the music)!
7. In these 10 years, only a handful of skaters tried attempting backcounter 3A, and even less have successfully landed it in competition (thus far afaik: Nobunari Oda once at Japan Open2018, after retirement; Kevin Aymoz starting from 2018, too). Even then, Yuzu's mastery of the jump and sheer consistency are unparalleled!
8. most of Yuzuru's 50(!) senior SP 3As that received positive GOE (out of the 52 SP 3As in his WHOLE senior career thus far) are back counter 3A! (°◇°) Mindblowing stats on their own, but even more when you consider how hard backcounter3A is!! (afaik the only non-backcounter SP 3A are from Yuzu's first senior season, a few SE-3A-SE sandwich in Ballade No.1 and then the twizzles sandwich 3A in Otonal... though a couple of his Otonal 3A in 2018-19 were entered from backcounter too)
9. he not only jumps 3A out of a counter, he also precedes the turn with a variety of transitions (different for every program) and he executes a variety of exits on landing too! Because Yuzuru "jumps are part of performance" Hanyu is just that extra!
10. his backcounter 3A is also HUGE. According to Ice-scope measurements of men's SP 3A in WC19, it was the highest&longest jump!
11. Yuzu's backcounter 3A is at least as much of a signature moves as other FS elements that fans promptly nicknamed after skaters (and sometimes even more iconic and unique. See rippon for comparison).

Time for fanyus to make everyone know how amazing Yuzuru's backcounter3A is! ᕙ (･∀･) ᕗ

Hanyuconomy / Hanyueconomy = referred to Yuzuru’s selling power, be it for tickets for competitions or shows, merch for a parade, endorsed brands of detergents/chocolate/toe socks, watches or even weirder things like an electric toothbrush… and anything yuzu-flavoured, too

And Yuzu even inspired new gyoza products! w(°ｏ°)w All because he loves gyoza! (Ajonomoto has been providing meals for him and TeamJapan in comps too)

the Hanyu spin = this spin position, with the non-supporting foot pulled above or right below the head. When Yuzuru was younger and more flexible he could raise his leg above the head, now he executes this spin with foot below the head. It's a non-basic position useful to achieve level4 as part of his change foot combination spin (usually the last spin in his competition programs).

I'm not sure who started calling it "hanyu spin", or even how widespread it is, but since I've seen it mentioned a few times, I'm adding this entry. Afaik Daniel Grassl too has a similar spin position. Obviously ir requires great flexibility.

Haru Yo Koi (shortened as HYK) = Come, Spring or May Spring come (Haru yo, Koi" 春よ、来い), also affectionately referred as Haru-chan: it's Yuzuru’s EX for season 2018-19. Choreo by David Wilson on special piano arrangement made by pianist Shinya Kiyozuka for his FaOI2018 live collaboration with Yuzuru (Kiyozuka later released this version in a new album. Fun fact, the pianist loved this collab and called Yuzuru Yuzu-chan). (*¯︶¯*)

Haru yo koi, originally by Yumi Matsutoya, was the theme song of the homonym NHK series and it was also featured in a 3.11 recovery project.(x) The song was first released in 1994, same year when Yuzu was born, and he said it’s one of his mom’s fave songs (´꒳`)♡

Yuzuru chose to skate to this song in FaOI2018, while he was recovering from the injury that nearly prevented him from competing (and winning) in PyeongChang2018, so the theme of rebirth and wish for a Spring to come after the harshness of Winter also had a very personal meaning for him. He did a HYK live collab with Yumi Matsutoya herself for 24hTV2019 and skated again to HYK in NHK2019 Gala and then for MOI2020 (the Gala after JNats2020), during covid pandemic, to convey a message of hope. ( ；∀；)  Yuzuru chose HYK as his EX for Beijing2022 Gala too, here his words about what he meant to convey (◕u◕)

One can think of HYK as part of a trilogy with HnN and HwS for the flower&rebirth theme(x), but the healing HYK also has obvious ties with the more painful Requiem, too.

The costume inspired nicknames like Cherry blossom fairy or Sakura Fairy, pink jellyfish, Spring maiden.

Heaven and Earth (H&E) = see Ten to Chi to.

Hermit mode = see ninja.

Highlighter Seimei = see neon Seimei.

HwS = see Hana wa Saku.

Hydroblade or Hydroblading (or "Hydro" for short) = a FS move where skaters glide backwards on one foot, usually crouched low on the ice (often with limbs tangled in positions that look kinda uncomfortable but also amazing).  ☆ ～('▽^人) 

It was popularized by Canadian ID team Bourne/Kraatz (their coach came up with the name). Fun fact: Shae-Lynn Bourne is also one of Yuzu's long-time choreographers and it was in one of her programs (SEIMEI) that he first used the hydroblade in a competition program, though he had been using the move in his EX already before moving to TCC. Here here and here and also here Yuzuru demontrating the move.

Despite the move not being very common, there are several variations both from single skaters (involving two, one or no supporting hand) and ID teams. Here Akiko Suzuki on back outside edge.

Hydroblade is one of Yuzuru's most beloved and recognizable signature moves. His first hydroblade was the two-handed variation, but it has evolved through the years. Now his most iconic variation is the right back inside one-handed* hydroblade that often featuees in his FS chsq and EX. Maybe we can call Yuzuru's version the Hanyublade! (⊙ꇴ⊙)

His expression and the way he uses his free arm always compliment the mood of the program e.g. see the striking difference in these pictures of SEIMEI, Requiem, Notte Stellata. (✧u✧)

In HYK instead he transitions from his one-handed variation into the lower and faster two-handed variation (with additional iconic "kissing the ice" choreo). We often call it "the ultra low hydro(blade)" to distinguish it from Yuzuru's "traditional" version.

Here Yuzu "teaching" how to hydroblade to Shizuka Arakawa and Miki Ando during FaOI practice and here around the 1:45 mark a long (mostly without any supporting hand!) hydro during practices for the NHK special Exhibition in 2016.

IdF = Internationaux de France, the GP event held in France. It changed a lot of names, because French Fed isn't as good at keeping sponsors as it is at keeping its podium (recyclying the same disco podium since WC2012 in Nice). When Éric Bompard sponsored it, it was called TEB.

In 2017 they decided usual medals weren't cool enough, so medallists were given colourful plastic stars instead.

ill-fitting suits  =  most of Yuzuru’s suits. (＠Д＠;) They are unfamous for always having something wrong. When the size of the suit is so big he swims in it^(x), when sleeves are too long, when too short... though, there is an upward trend, the most recent suits were better! A lot better!! Keep going, Yuzu!

Ina Bauer (IB for short) = a move in the field in figure skating where skaters's feet are parallel. Since explaining with words is unnecessarily complicated, I'll just drop this super cool pic of Yuzu mid-IB: look carefully at the position of his feet! (also, another pic from different angle)

The move was named after the skater who invented it.

According to leading foot being on outside or inside edge, there are outside IB and inside IB (additional shot of inside IB because the inside IB in Ballade stsq is pure beauty ♡).

      Layback Ina Bauer = IB where skaters arch their backs in layback position, e.g. Yuzuru here  °o° (here a shot from above)

Layback IB is Shizuka Arakawa's famous signature element and lil mushroom Yuzu emulated it (here to see bb Zu demonstrate one for cameras in front of Shizuka herself). (๑′ᴗ‵๑) Now layback IB is his signature move, too! Here and here and here a few pics for your collection :D

ISU = International Skating Union, also known as the ban of our existence. The international governing body for both Speed Skating and Figure Skating.

They are weirdly nostalgic of an old scoring system famous for blatant politicking & score trading between feds (that culminated in the big scandal of Salt Lake City OWG2002) and they are allergic to things like maths&statistics, standards, modern technology and judges' accountability.

Oh, and they still live in the 1990s or something.

But hey, they also do good things! Maybe. :P

Anyway, Yuzuru wrote an entire graduation thesis titled "A Feasibility Study on Utilization in Figure Skating by A Wireless Inertia Sensor Motion Capture System",* aiming to study AI systems to be used to aid FS scoring in the future.

Hopefully, in a few decades, ISU will finally come to terms with the world having entered the 21st century...  (←_←)
For now, we must content ourselves with the ISU most recent brave forays into this century:

It's in my calculations. Everything. = famous quote from a 2017 documentary where Yuzuru commentated his own performance of 2015 GPF SEIMEI (aired on 2017/09/24. wherespacepooh had subbed it, but vimeo link now deleted </3).

It became a popular catchphrase because Zuzu is indeed a very analytical person who likes leaving nothing to chance. Of course there are things out of his control like injuries or untimely asthma attacks (>_<;) but one distinctive quality Yuzuru has is that he can turn wild dreams into sound plans, and plans into reality

Also, weird coincidences sometimes happen, so fans joke that those weird coincidences had actually been part of Yuzuru's masterful planning all along. (⌒ω⌒)

Popular meme "just according to keikaku" is used, too.

Jedi = the costume Yuzuru wears for FaOI 2018 opening number ^(x) (Makuhari & Kanazawa). The shirt is a strange hybrid with turtleneck + asymmetric sleeves (bear-survivor style) + some shiny bit + a buffet napkin on the bottom. The design and the shiny half make it look futuristic^(x).

JGP, JGPF = like GP and GPF but in the junior circuit

JP, JPN = short for Japan (or Japanese, too).

Please avoid using this abbreviation instead, since in many places it's considereded a racial slur. There are countries where the term is in use and not derogatory, and maybe people might not be aware of this important nuance (I myself learned it on this forum), but since in Japan it's perceived as offensive, too, it's better to avoid it.

Also, the official abbreviations are Jp or Jpn anyway. Slip-ups can happen of course, but let's make an effort! 人´∀｀)

JSF = Japan Skating Federation.

Despite Japan having been for at least a good decade a big and sought-after market for FS (many sponsors are Jpn companies, too), thus far JSF has been unable to translate the economic power into politicking power within the ISU, still ruled by the deadly(for the other feds and FS at large) combo of USA&Rus feds (sadly it isn't bitter fanyus' made-up conspiracy, actual ISU judges&insiders say so e.g. here). Internal comps are instead mostly ruled by politicking&rivalries between different schools (historically, Eastern Japan, including Sendai, is kinda the cinderella in Jpn internal politicking, despite Japanese FS being born there and the region also being the place that gave Japan both first Women's and first Men's OGM)

Fanyus feel particular(and entirely reasonable) disklike towards JSF previous president H*shimoto, but the current one isn't exactly high on our Fave people list, either...

On the other hand, Sendai-raised Shizuka Arakawa belongs to the JSF ranks, too, and she's always been supportive of Yuzu. (◕‿◕✿) Look at them after Nice2012 medal ceremony!

JWC = Like WC but for junior skaters. Skaters can compete in both junior and senior circuit in the same season, as long as they meet the age requirements.

K&C = Kiss and Cry.

After skaters have done their programs, they sit down in a dedicated area rinkside and wait for their scores. Depending on how well they skated and how the judges score, you'll see laughs&joy or sadness... or WTF reactions too.

For Yuzuru, it also usually features cute Pooh interactions.

KuriMemo = cute nickname Japanese fans gave to Crystal Memories

Kuyashii = Yuzuru’s daily diet. Kidding! Japanese expression that could be translated as “feeling frustrated” but it means much more (Yuzuru often uses “regretful” in English). If you’ve never spoken/studied Japanese, it will be one of the first words you’ll learn to recognize watching Yuzuru’s interviews in Japanese...Together with yonkaiten.

Layback IB (Layback Ina bauer) = see  Ina Bauer.

Let Me Entertain You (LMEY) = the SP for 2020-21 season that Yuzuru chose to bring entertainment and lightness to fnas all over the world in such a difficult year. Here the LMEY thread.  

Lettuce or Sparkly Lettuce = see Sparkle Salad.

(Demonic/angrily) Lip-syncing = Yuzu being lost in his own word, earphones on, and soundlessly but energetically and expressively (some would say scarily) lip-syncing to music. Often to be observed pre-competition, it's just one of the (maybe unusual but)endearing things that make Yuzuru...Yuzuru. Here a very telling picture + a couple examples here and here (where you can even see Zu intensely addressing a wall!) :D

Jpn tv even featured this particular habit of his XD

Lisfranc injury = one of the reasons why Boston was so cursed.

Long story short, a few days after WC16 JSF disclosed that Yuzuru had been skating on injury - damage in the instep ligament of his left foot - (linking here for the moment the news broke out, in case anyobe wishes to relieve the fandom trauma). Later, people learned that he had been skating with varying degrees of pain through most of the season. (´ᗝ｀｡)

Probably intensive 4T training esacerbated the injury (the 4T, that he repeated twice in the FS + one in the SP, particularly burdened his left foot). In January2016 the pain was so bad he had anti-inflammatory injections so he could skate in ice shows (like the NHK Special Exhibition linked to Earthquake recovery), and then in Boston the pain was so bad that he tied his boot laces tight to numb his foot... ;____;

After recovering, Yuzuru with Ghislain's help slightly reworked his 4T so to avoid re-injury and he also changed boots from Edea Ice fly to Edea Piano, which offer stronger support to the foot. By the way, Yuzuru focusing more on 4Lo was also kind of a byproduct of his lisfranc injury: he had been working on the jump (and landing in shows) earlier than 2016, but the Loop was also the jump that burdened his left foot the least...

 LOTTE = a brand Yuzuru has been working with for several years now. Yuzu endorses Ghana chocolate (see corresponding entry) and Xylitol chewing-gums.

Among Yuzuru's gum campains: Xylitol Whites and GUM FOR THE GAME. GUM FOR THE GAME in particular gifted us a gorgeous CM set in Ice Rink Sendai and an equally gorgeous behind-the-scenes video (✧u✧)

Following Yuzuru's partecipation in Beijing2022 Olympics, where he challenged the unprecedented 4A but missed podium, LOTTE published 6 full-page ads with Yuzu on the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun. The initiative is called WE RESPECT YOU: The things Hanyu-senshu has taught us. (ಥωಥ)

Lottery Hell = what fans have to get through when tickets for Yuzuru competitions/shows in Japan are allotted through draws. Only a few can survive, even less triumph(seriously, getting tickets in Japan is really hard)

to mark (an element) = when skaters skip an element (like jumps or spins) while practicing. Yuzuru sometimes executes a single jump or twirl to mimic the element, or points to the place where the element is supposed to happen and counts and tlaks to himself :D

For example: Yuzuru marking 4Lz in his Origin FS in GPF2019 practice; kinda marking the zusaa in LGC at 4CC17; marking his spins in his Otonal at ACI2018 (WATCH the full RT it's so gorgeous ...RIP first Otonal version without backloaded combo & slower stsq T__T).

Masquerade = one of the two collaboration exhibition programs Yuzu had with ToshI in FaoI 2019, choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne. See also Pudding of the Opera.

Mezamashi = how Jpn TV trolls poor thirsty fanyus (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞

It's a Japanese TV morning show featuring various news, REPEATEDLY. When we're really desperate and Yuzuru is scheduled to be featured in the program, we watch it in hope to get a tiny glimpse of Yuzuru (here to relive the first memorable Mezamashi trolling streaming party of the Planet, here a few significant comments). It earned its own badge, aptly named "Trolled by Mezamashi"^(x).

Nessie = 4A, the jump as legendary as the Loch Ness monster, and a MONSTER of a jump for its difficulty (of course it has to be the one jump Yuzu wants to pursue!).

Lots of rumours surround it, but only a few crazy brave skaters are on the hunt. Some people say it can't exists, some say they have seen it but have no proof (meaning, no vid of a fully rotated one). Who will be the one who will prove us it's real?

NHK = NHK Trophy, the GP event held in Japan. For Yuzu fans it has both wonderful memories (the historical record-shattering NHK2015 that broke the scoring system, the PPOS reveal at NHK 2016...) and bad ones (2014, the injury in NHK2017 practice)

Ninja = Yuzuru going in his hermit mode and effectively disappearing from all media (and also from other people’s SNS) He adopts his ninja skills to go and hide in his cave and then to suddenly pop up again for competitions or ice-shows. Or for his monthly watering of us starved cacti.

The watering usually consists in a written message forwarded to his fed or his sponsors or a pre-recorded video message (usually featuring a White Wall and Zuzu being so sweet that we collectively weep in delight anyway).

Noodle, Noodle arms = Yuzuru and his arms when he was younger and thinner and his huge stamina issues+asthma made it difficult for him to keep his posture and control his limbs (especially in the 2nd half of his long programs), so it could give an overall impression of...something...a bit floppy  So yeah, a noodle

Notte Stellata (NS) = Yuzuru's EX on the song Notte Stellata (The Swan) by Il Volo (music based on Saint-Saens' The Swan). The title means starry night. Here the program thread, here some more info and links, here a subbed version of NHK2016 (english translation of the Italian lyrics), and here Yuzuru explaining how this program, too, is connected to his experience of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

The program features the gorgeous Swanyu costume, the first twizzle-3A sandwich (while afaik the first twizzes entry into 3A was in Requiem) and gorgeous delayed 1A... that some people initially thought was just a popped 3A (*/▽＼*)

Nyooming = Yuzuru being Yuzuru and skating at lighting bolt speed (often to be observed in the background of other skaters’ videos)

Old man Pooh-san = the "usual" Pooh tissue case Yuzuru showed up with at comps for many seasons, starting from 2011-12. Apparently, Old man pooh san retired after 4CC2020, hence in 2020-21 YuzuPooh took over as Yuzuru's loyal rinkside assistent (´∀｀ゞ (and this is why original Pooh is now called Old man Pooh-san). Old man Pooh-san has been through a lot! ( ; ◡ ; )

Overlord = ironic&affectionate way we refer to Yuzuru (example: when he’s being an exasperating Trollzuzu).

Overthinking = Yuzu’s and his fans' favourite pastime. Joking!

For Yuzu = thinking too much, too long, too deeply and ending going around in circles in his head. Best avoided while skating, it might end with him popping a YOLO3A into a measly YOLO1A (because too busy choosing between hard entry and even harder entry) or in something like ACI 2017 FS (＃￣ω￣)

For fans = over-analysing everything Yuzu (hence the General Yuzu Thread stacked up >3000 pages in in its first year)

OWG = Olympic Winter Games, or the competition that mushroom Yuzu declared he WOULD WIN. Also, the competition Yuzuru declared he WOULD WIN AGAIN. Guess what, he did, BOTH TIMES.

Paprika = bell peppers, AKA the culprits for Yuzu's trauma, as recounted by the man himself here (from around 10:33 mark of the first video).   The episode is sometimes referred to as The Paprika Accident. and is the source of the yuzumeme "I have a trauma".

Parisienne Walkways (PW) = Yuzuru's SP in season 2012-13, that he also kept as SP for his first olympic season (2013-14). Jpn fans and Yuzuru also refer to it as Pari-san. (っ˘ω˘ς )

The program is set to the homonymous piece by Gary Moore... and to Hoochie Coochie Man (￣▽￣*)  Fanyu detectives found it was actually the version by The Jeff Healey Band (the NO lyrics part!!!! Head here for all the context of the discovery, and here you can recognize the iconic side lunge moment!)

PW was the very first program Jeffrey Buttle choreographed for Yuzuru (here to see the Canadian debut of the program! Select Part2, from around 5:20 mark). That would be the start of a very productive collaboration that gave us many many marvellous and unique Short programs and also several memorable move in the field! (for an overview, see Signature moves)  ♡ ～('▽^人)

Yuzu set his very first WR with PW at 17yo in autumn 2012 (he would then proceed to get a super super super kuyashii FS in that comp, but we're gonna pretend that never happenend), and he also became the first skater ever to break 100points barrier in the SP, and on the biggest stage, the Olympics!  ☆*:.｡.o(≧▽≦)o.｡.:*☆

Here to see Yuzuru's olympic debut in Sochi14 Team Event, where he ranked first in Men's SP (he didn't skate in Team FS) and take a look at how PW looked skated by 24yo Yuzuru in SCI19 Gala. Tbh, everything PW is ICONIC, and it's so good to see how Yuzuru got better and better with it as he grew in both confidence and skill. It's also the very first program where the ICONIC Yuzuru side lunge / Pistol pose  makes its first appearance!!!

PB = Personal Best. Literally, a skater's best score. If it's the best score ever registered it's also called a WR.

BEWARE! ISU doesn't recognize WRs, but anyone else call them like that because it sounds much cooler than "the best Personal Best ever".

PC = short for PyeongChang, where OWG2018 were held ｡.:*☆

The Olympic figure skating competitions were all hosted in the Gangneung Ice Arena. 4CC2017 (Olympic test event) was held there  too.

PChiddy or also just Chiddy = Patrick Chan, Canadian legend with out-of-this-world skating skills, 3 consecutives WC titles and a foot-in-mouth penchant in interviews. In SochiOWG 2014, he continued the (unfortunate)Canadian tradition of many great Men's skaters who miss on the most coveted prize, the OGM (though Patrick got a team gold in 2018OWG! Yay for him!).

Well, Yuzu won SochiOGM so we can't really be that sad, right? Here a thread where we discussed about Patrick&his views/relationship with Yuzuru. Here a pre-Sochi documentary that also addresses the particular Canadian curse about OGM (the description is pretty poignant: "Canada has never won gold at the Olympics in men's figure skating, but world champion Patrick Chan hopes to change that in Sochi."... oops)

Fun trivia:  some of Patrick's fans used to throw on the ice panties, in place of the more traditional flowers of plushies. ಠ_ಠ (True story, see below. For the series, but fanyus are the crazy ones, uh)

Patrick and his godly skating skills atually played an important role in pushing Yuzuru to get better and better. He even referred to Patrick as "the sun" he was striving to reach XD

When Yuzuru raised through the senior ranks, higher BV didn't meant authomatic high GOE and PCS, so he had to work hard to earn every single point.

Pistol pose  = Yuzuru's side lunge, a particular lunge variation that got iconic with Parisienne Walkways! Thank you Jeff!

It became one of Yuzuru's most distinctive Signature moves and since then he has been incorporating it as transitional element in several program (e.g. in his stsq, or as entry into spin...). What you're looking for is the amazing blade control and speed, the added choreographic value throguh upper body movements and the smooth transitioning in and out of the move!

"Pistol pose" is a fan nickname that became kind of official, or at least it reached Yuzuru, so we know he knows XD  You can see back in summer 2014 (from 17:19 mark. Yuzuru was visiting a school in 3.11 Earthquake-affected area for 24h TV 2014) a student asking Yuzuru to execute the move and Yuzu asking "What's pistol pose?" (≧▽≦)

PIW = Prince Ice World.

The Planet = this place, duh! The name Planet Hanyu is inspired by one famous quote from figure skating commentator Max Ambesi (Italian Eurosport): “Welcome on Planet Hanyu. Population: ONE. Him.”

Plushy, Plu-sama(nope, that's what Yuzuru The Plushenko Fanboy would say)Plu-san = Evgeni Plushenko, a four times Olympic medallist (one time Men Singles OGM, two times Men Singles silver, one time Team gold) and iconic skating legend who skated to iconic programs like this one (￣ε￣＠)

By the way, that's one of Yuzu's fave Plushenko programs... (ー_ー) together with Tribute to Nijinsky, with music that Yuzuru himself would later select for his Origin FS.

Pooh = Winnie the Pooh. Yuzuru loves Pooh! He said that Pooh's unchanging smile calms him down when he's nervous, and that's why he carries his iconic Pooh tissue case around to competitions! It's cute and soft and carries useful tissues, so why not? As they say, kill two birds with one stone! ヾ( ° ∀ ° )ﾉﾞ

When Yuzuru started carrying Pooh during his earlier senior seasons, people were bemused and endeared but they thought he would give up on Pooh as he grew older... but Zu being Zu (and not caring one bit about being seen as "childish" or less "manly" for carrying a plushie), he was "heck NO!" and just kept bringing Pooh with him, cuddling it, squeezing it and such. It's a quirkness of his and a most adorable one! (◕‿◕)♡ It also contributes to Yuzuru's mindblowing dualism, since he can look so innocent&harmelss with Pooh but he can also be a scary demon in competition (see murderface for evidence).

Pooh rain = a glorious tradition that covers the ice in the brigh yellow&red of Pooh plushies after Yuzuru's skates.

It all started from the long-standing tradition of throwing flowers and other gifts on the ice after a skating performance. Since Yuzu liked Pooh and carried a pooh tissue case with him, fans started throwing Pooh plushie specifically for him. It grew and grew and now Pooh Rain &its variants (like Pooh storms, Poovalanche when the plushie rain is particularly intense XD) have changed the landscape of comps. They also get routinely featured on media and commentators and journalists just can't stop mentioning Pooh all the time.

If you see Yuzu skating and you don't see a Pooh rain then:

1) you're watching young Yuzu, before he got famous and/or fans came up with personalized gifts for him

2) throwing gifts on ice isn't allowed (e.g. lack of flower girls&boys who pick up the gifts at ACI; throwing gifts not allowed because covid like at WTT2021, Beijing2022..., gala&iceshows)

3) you're hallucinating and actually there's no Yuzu oops (≧▽≦)

Fun fact(or maybe not fun): some people think Pooh plushies are psychological warfare (there are also nastier things being said, linking so you can see for yourself what kind of ridiculous "criticism" Yuzu&fandom have to put up with, at times)

To be fair, sometimes a plushie or two land on people's head instead of on the ice. Oops! (e.g. pay attention to what happens in the background in this video) Still, plushies are rather soft and it's never intentional... and at times they even hit Yuzu XD

Pop, popped jump = when skaters execute one or more rotation LESS than they meant because they "open" the jump too early (meaning they unravel their body earlier, loosing the tight body position required to execute higher number of rotations on a jump). Not sure about this, but iirc it's called "pop" because it usually looks as if the skater was jerked back middair, like when a parachute opens.

Yuzu's pops usually are very parachute-like (‘∩’) and can be timed to other skater's music cues LOL. Sometimes they are also highlighted by weird shrieks

A pop can be the result of e.g. mental issues (like being scared of a jump because of past injury), wrong timing on take off (so skaters consciously or unconsciously try to "protect" their bodies preventing a nasty fall) or, if second jump in a combo, of messy landing on the first jump (so they lack speed/are off balance when they take off for the second jump). Also see: overthinking.

A quad can be popped into a triple or more frequently into a double, e.g. see Yuzu's 4S popped into 2S many, many times during 2016-17 season. (ಥ﹏ಥ)  At times, even into a single, if there's something very off (e.g. blade gets stuck in a rut in the ice at take off). It's happened to Yuzuru's planned 4S in WTT21 FS.

A triple jump can be popped into a double or a single (see Yuzu's YOLO 1A at the end of WTT 2017, meant to be a glorious 3A. It was a beautiful popped Axel, though)^(x).

Pops are very costly mistakes because the BV, especially of a quad, but also of a triple, is much higher than the BV of a double.

In terms of BV and TES, rotating and falling on all your jumps is better than staying on your feet but popping all the jumps (・―・)

Pop concert = when a skater pops A LOT of jumps in the same program. Or when MANY skaters pop A LOT of jumps in their programs during one competition.

Potato sack pants = the very questionable loose pants^(x) Yuzu wore in a Ghana photoshoot in 2017. ლ(¯ロ¯"ლ)

But we forgave them because the other half of the outfit was decent and Yuzu acted cute (see Red sweater). The Planet was off line when the name was born, but we were on some other chat and I saved the chat 'cause I knew I would need it one day So here's the birth of the Potato sack pants.

PPOS = Purple Pants Of Sin, or PurpleLGC = Yuzuru's LGC costume 2.0^(x). The costume is VERY purple and...no other explanations needed, I guess (*ﾉ∀`*)

Prime Minister Pooh = Winnie the Pooh Of course Yuzuru’s trusted companion has a prominent role on the Planet!

Prince Ice World (PIW) = Japanese ice show with a long history. Its peculiarity is that, after finale, it allows fans to interact with skaters directly, talk to them and give them gifts and take pictures, so it's a great opportunity both for fans and for young skaters to receive fans' support in person (o´▽`o)

Young Yuzu attended PIW in 2011 and 2012 (here Zu being embarassed when asked to do a "sexy" pose for pics XD).

For obvious reasons, nowdays that kind of close interaction would be... complicated, logistically ┐(￣∀￣)┌

Prince Oreo = Yuzuru wearing the black version^(x) of FaOI 2019 Kobe&Toyama ending costume. I mean, it does look like Oreo... I mean, just look at this! I can't see any difference :P afaik the first mention on the Planet is from this tweet, not sure who started it all, but it looks like everyone loves it.

Pudding of the Opera (or just Pudding for short) = Masquerade. The name has a rather... convoluted peculiar reason It all started with ToshI, who singer of Masquerade, making a pudding commercial and being called Pucchin Prince. Add Yuzuru eating pudding (x), mix with Masquerade intor music being form Phantom of the Opera and...well, one thing lead to another and we ended with Pudding of the Opera! (x, more here)

PW = see Parisienne Walkways.

Quad = "quadruple jump", a jump with (about)4 revolutions in the air.

Or a "quadriennium", from one Winter Olympic  to the next.

Quadding = to jump (many) quads.

Quad Lutzifer = Quad Lz+Lucifer, aka Yuzuru's 4Lz, also knows as the beautiful snake. It is a true beauty when landed well but...it can be kind of unruly and...I...don't need to explain the reason for the name, right? NHK17 Let's support Yuzuru on his quest to persuade Quad Lutzifer to be a loyal friend!

Yuzu choose to bring his friend back to play in public for FaOI 2019 (giving fans, both those attending and those anxiously waiting for reports, a few heart attacks in the process) and he got the nicest group hug from fellow skaters when he landed it cleanly in FaOI Kobe! (here to relive that unforgettable moment)

While Quad Lutzifer has been a bit on and off in comps during 2019-20, there's no doubt: it's back!!!

Quadster = a skater jumping a lot of quads. Usually young and (but not always)male. It can be used to say that the skater has mainly quads but is laking in other areas. Of course a quadster can improve to whole package (not always the case. A lot depends on their scores actually pushing them to do so).

Quints = the word that thou shalt not mention (but Yuzu has no trouble mentioning, sadly for out hair)

It stands for quintuple jumps. Insane, right? Some studies say quints might be impossible for the human body.

Yuzuru thinks they're possible(!). He thinks maybe Boyang can jump a quint, Shoma  said he tries them. Yuzuru also said that, after landing the 4A, he would like to try (and Ghislain said he's acutally done 5T and 5S in harness)

Hence our collective hair loss.

the r-word = Retirement /to retire, which is when skaters leave competitive sport entirely, for whatever reason (though they can also chose to comeback). Not to be confused with withdrawal (see WD).

The reason for the use of "r-word" (or otherwise censored term e.g. "r****e") in place of the full word is that, a few seasons ago, not many of fans were "ready" to see Zu step down from competitive skating. Moreover, it felt kind of an ominous word to associate with him, with all the career-threatening injuries and accidents he'd been going through between Sochi and PyeongChang (꒪д꒪II starting from the COCcrash, passing through Boston and then of course NHK17

There's less of a taboo now: partly, because we all got fed up with how ISU treats him, but especially because Zu's plan was to compete till PC and then retire, so fans were expecting/fearing that... but instead he's been gifting us so many more seasons and programs!!! ☆*:.｡.o(≧▽≦)o.｡.:*☆

Of course we'll still be sad, and we'll all miss Yuzu & the special thrill he brings in competition, but we've been blessed way beyond any expectation, so one can somehow made peace with retirement occurring one day... Let's keep supporting Yuzu in comps and beyond comps (and may he retire on his own terms, when he feels ready to do that)! ᕦ( ' ᴗ ' )ᕤ

Red Sweater = the turtleneck sweater that made us forgive the Potato sack pants.

Requiem = Requiem of Heaven and Earth, Yuzuru's EX program in season 2015-16.

The music is from Requiem for the Great East Japan Earthquake 3.11, by Yasunobu Matsuo, and choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto (the same Kenji of Kenji's Room).

It's, of course, a very emotionally loaded program. Here (Requiem starting around 10:20 mark) a touching special exhibition recorded for 24hTV charity in 2015.

On a lighter note, the costume, due to its teal colours and abundance of ruffles, has sparkled people's imagination and earned several nicknames (see Cabbage costume, Seaweed, Sparkle Salad). Still pretty, Satomi Ito carefully crafted it with plenty of details to make fanartists lose their mind fall in love! (´꒳`)♡

Rippon jump = when skaters jump keeping both arms above their heads. The name comes from Adam Rippon, who used it a lot on his 3Lz. Usually commentators don't use this term, but us fans use it a lot because it's way shorter than saying "with both arms above their head" ┐(︶▽︶)┌

When done well it's a beauty. See Yuzu's -2T rippon and -3T rippon^(x) combo

RonCapu = Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Yuzuru's SP for season 2021-2022. RonCapu is an affectionate nickname that was first used by Japanese fans. It was an instant hit for everyone! (っ˘ω˘ς )

The program is also called Rondo.

The program features insane transitions, several twizzles, gorgeous moves in the field and Yuzuru's unique way to turn his movements into music. Here an analysis of Roncapu transitions, while in this special interview Shinya Kiyozuka, the pianist who arranged the piano version of the piece specifically for Yuzuru, talks about his work with the piece and his thoughts about the program (⌒‿⌒)

Rondo = another nickname for Yuzu's 2021-22 SP. See Roncapu.

RT = see runthrough.

Runthrough (RT) = when, during on ice practice, skaters' music is played and they execute their program (so, they "go through their program"), practicing the elements and choreo to the music. Skaters can choose to do all the jumps and spins or skip some, or even to mark all those elements and just reharse the inbetween choreo and such.

Skaters train their choreo and elements outside of their own RT too (while another skater's music is played).

Practice etiquette is that, when skaters are doing their RT (their music is being played), they have the "right of way", meaning that everyone else should leave the path free for them (e.g. if skater 1 is doing his RT and skater 2 wants to do a spin but he sees skater 1 preparing to jump in the same spot, skater 2 should move away so to not disturb skater 1).

I've seen some people defend the "right of way" as some sacred law but, being a rule aimed at avoiding skaters crashing into each other in the first place, it should never supersede some measure of good sense. On the other hand, if someone blatantly, even if accidentally, interferes with someone else's RT, acknowledging it & apologizing are a nice way to leave the mistake behind without hard feelings.

Ruffles = what Yuzuru likes on his costumes. Ruffles can be sparkly if they are additionally sprinkled with tiny(or not so tiny) rhinestones... which is often the case in Yuzuru's costumes! ≧ω≦

SB = Season Best, a skater's best score in a certain season. It's updated during the season and it can be lower or equal to a PB. If it's higher, of course, it becomes a new PB. ヽ(´∀｀*)ノ

SC = Skate Canada, the Canadian stop of the GP series, previously one of Yuzu's fixed appointments with silver (￣ε￣) (see: Canadian Silver Curse).

Also the name of Canadian figure skating fed.

SCACI = Skate Canada Autumn Classic International. See ACI.

Scrunchy smile = this crinkly crinkly Yuzu smile^(x)

SE = see Spread Eagle.

Seaweed also dubbed Angry Seaweed = Yuzuru's Requiem costume^(x) (also here). See also: Sparkle Salad.

All the ruffles, in the gradation of light cyan, aquamarine and a bit of teal, make it look like sea lettuce  

But when in motion, the costume really fits the theme of the program (the 2011 Tohoku eartquake and tsunami), the sea green ruffles resembling sea-waves. Also, HD pictures show just how gorgeous it it.

Shirt On Ice = see SOI.

Shoulder ruffle = literally when a costume has a (somewhat big) ruffle on one shoulder. E.g. the white shoulder ruffle in H&L
costume (source) or also the drapey one in the Étude costume. A bit of a divisive element for the fandom, but it looks pretty&swishy during jumps and other elements!

Side lunge = the more official term for one of Yuzuru's most famous Signature moves. See Pistol pose.

Signature move = skaters may have a skating move (usually choreographic no-BV elements used in ChSq, or very unusual jumps or spins) that has become a bit of their own trademark: e.g. Shoma Uno's cantilever, Kevin Aymoz's JZ slide, Jason Brown's spirals, Julia Lang's lunge, Shizuka Arakawa's layback IB, ...

SE, IB, cantilever, hydroblade, split jumps, sit twizzles, delayed1A, but also particular spiral or spin variations (here a few examples) or lunges (like pistol pose) and knee slides (like zusa) can be Signature moves. Some elements, like the backflip, are banned in competitions, but skaters use them in shows because they are WOW moments for the audience. To be viewed as a skater's trademark, the element needs to be executed often and also as some kind of performance highlight.

Yuzu being Yuzu, he has a deluge of signature moves, some very peculiar, like his beautiful variation of one-handed hydroblade, the delayed1A (very rare nowdays) or sit twizzles. He can also adapt his signature moves to fit different moods through different upper body movements. Here a cool compilation of some of his signature moves (also includes spin variations and jump entries).

Silver = what Yuzuru doesn’t really like when he's competing (he much prefers gold). Though it’s fine to wear silver in ice-shows and EX costumes

Smolzuru = art with small cutie Yuzu, see here for some examples of just how adorable it can be!

SNS = Social Network System (like twitter, instagram and so on), or "what Yuzuru doesn’t have" (well, he probably has some private accounts, but we don't know them)

SOI = Stars On Ice = Ice show organized by managment company IMG. While FaOI is known for its... ahem... "imaginative" costume choices, SOI is characterized by more...um...more "classic" choices. Typically, male skaters wear somewhat undescriptive outfits, while ladies get to hoard all the sparkles&colors

The show was born in North America in the era of max popularity of FS and currently organizes tours in Canada, Japan and USA, with different cast (here some historical and covid-prevention context at SOI2021).

After many years of no Yuzu attendance, in SOI2021 Yuzu headlined an all-Japanese cast and managed to give fans multiple heart attacks bringing back the long-awaited LGC, wearing a white polo and self-choreographing his solo part to the now absolutely ICONIC Blinding Lights opening, that you can find here in all its extended cut + multiple camera angles + slows mo 4K glory! (/▽＼*)｡o○♡

SP = Short Program also just Short (for Ice Dance events: RD, Rhythm Dance, but till 2017-18 it was SD, Short Dance). Program that's performed in what's usually the first segment of a figur skating competition. It's called "short" because... guess what, it's shorter than the Free program! (≧▽≦)

For Senior Men's, it's around 2.50 minutes long and skaters must execute one jump combo, one axel-type solo jump an one non-axel type solo jump, together with 3 spins and a step sequence.

There are specific requirements for all these elements, usually more stringent than in the FS, so there's less room for recovering from a mistake. It is said that "you can't win a comp in the SP, but you can lose it", meaning that mistakes in the SP can make skaters fall so far behind that making up for a gap in the FS is almost impossible (also, in some comps like WC and OWG, only part of the skaters who skates in the SP qualifies to skate in the FS too, so skating a good SP is even more important).

Space Kitten = Yuzuru. Because he is 1)an alien 2)basically a big cat! (check this twitter hastag for scientific evidence and this thread for yet more evidence. Also, this and this.)  ต(=ω=)ต

Sparkle Salad = Yuzuru’s Requiem costume (see here, here and also this&this (source)). It's very sparkly and...well, very green🥗 (see also: Seaweed).

Sparkles = what Yuzuru likes on his costumes

The best way to appreciate how sparkly a costume really is you must 1) see it live in the arena 2) watch HD footage, possibly fancams! Cameras for tv broadcasting usually tone down the sparkliness :( With some costumes, even the colour can look different on tv compared to reality (e.g. Origin 2.0, which looks darker and  a lot sparklier live than in many broadcasts. Fancams gets the closest to how it looked live).

Splatfest = when A LOT of skaters fall A LOT in one competition (and/or pop their jumps) :/ It's hard to watch, you know that skaters poured years of work to be there, but things just don't work on that one day  (ノ_<、)

Example: the Men WC FS event in Milan (the last group), where 5 out of 6 skaters splatted hard. (T⌓T)

Another notable example could be Men OWG 2014 FS, but Milan 2018 really was something else...

Spread Eagle (SE) = move in the field where skaters keep their feet turned out in opposite directions and aligned (cfr InaBauer where the feet are kept parallel instead). According to edges being both outside or both inside, you can have outside SE and inside SE. Commonly used as part of chroeo sequences or transitions inbetween elements, things like turnout at hips and ankle and body alignment determine its quality (and beauty): If you wanna learn more, see the physics of SE!

Among ladies, Shizuka Arakawa has one of the best SE, and among men special mention to the insanity of Jonathan Cassar's SE.

SE - both inside and outside - is one of Yuzuru's fave transitions into and out of jumps and in general he's very versatile in their use (°◡°♡)

Since he always has to be Extra, he even uses SE as a transition into the backcounter that he uses as a transition into 3A (yep, it's a transition into a transition into a jump, see here) ᕦ( ' ᴗ ' )ᕤ

     Spread Eagle sandwich or alternatively SE-jump-SE: fans' way to say that a jump is both preceded and followed by a SE. Yuzu's done SE-4T-SE, SE-4S-SE (in several of his short programs, most notably Ballade No.1) and SE-4Lo-SE (LGC).

As for SE-3A-SE, Yuzuru isn't the only skater who's done SE-3A-SE, though his is especially remarkable for the quality of the SE in and out, effortlessness, speed, flow and musicality, amplitude of the 3A... and just general awesomess, tbh. Just look at this beauty! (apparently, he was the first one doing a 3A spread eagle sandwich)

he's also done SE-3A-SE-3A-SE because he's extra like that! I can't find my gif so linking the one in the thread talking about Yuzuru's various 3A entries.

sQUAD = this was a term used mainly back in 2016-17 season (and some people hated it with a passion). It referred to the group of upcoming young skaters with lots of quads (and less whole package) and in particular three who definitely contributed to the quad race in Men's skating:

> Boyang Jin started, routinely including 4Lz in both his SP and FS in 2015, his senior debut (also landing the first 4Lz combo tbh the first real rotated 4Lz with proper technique, too, IMO) and first to execute 4 quads in his FS;

> Shoma Uno continued, landing the first ratified 4F in April 2016 and quickly adding more quads to his programs to keep up with the trend;

> Nathan Chen went on with 5 and 6 quads in the free skate. (tbh his 4F was more legit than the first ratified 4F, too)

Zuzu wasn't considered part of the sQUAD, despite:

✓ starting the club of the 100points in the SP, 200 in the FS and 300 total score! (and breaking the scoring system in the process too. The scores he achieved through combinating BV and excellence on all his elements and components dramaticlally accelerated the quad race)

✓ landing the first ratified 4Lo(ACI16, in September 2016)

✓ including 4 quads in his FS starting from season 16-17 (before he did 3 and he was one of the very few doing as many)

✓ landing 4Lz in competition too (RC17)

✓ hence, having a total of 4 types of quads in his repertorire (as many as Boyang and Shoma, just one less that Nathan)

Probably, because back then:

✧ Yuzuru was already the definition of Whole package, so counting him among the quadsters was reductive

✧ he was 3-5 years older that Boyang-Shoma-Nathan, and also...

✧ ...he had been around (&winning) in senior ranks for so long that people forgot how young he actually was. He was counted among the uncles (back then, the generation of Patrick&Javier, 4 years older than him) already as a wee 21-22yo. Funnily enough, Mikahil Kolyada, who wasn't really part of the sQuad but was still often counted in the "up and coming" ranks, was only a couple months younger than Yuzuru! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (same with Jason Brown, he's just a couple weeks younger than Yuzu).

Statement of Determination (Turning Professional) = how, on a press conference held on 19th July 2022, Yuzuru Hanyu announced that he was leaving the competitive scene and amateur skating to become professional athlete.

He especially remarked that he meant this move not as "retirement" or "stepping down" -- as usually viewed in Figure Skating (at odds with more popular sports where, instead, turning pro means you start playing BIG and earning from your work) --, but rather as a step up and forward! And that he would still be an athlete, not giving up technical elements like difficult jumps, and instead wanting to work harder to became an even better skater! (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

And that's why, to respect his will and positive&determined outlook on his new career, we refer to this as Yuzu turning pro, rather than retiring.

It was, of course, a BIG change for Yuzuru himself in the first place.

He had been competing&living as amateur skater for majority of his life, and as long as 12years(!!!) in senior circuits, three full olympic cycles at the top in a sport that is often very unforgiving to its athletes(to both body and mental health). Yuzuru being uncharacteristically restless and nervous during the presscon (he's usually rather collected during them and very skilled in handling media even in "difficult" situations) says enough. (◕n◕) It was fully his own free choice, but it doesn't mean he didn't held uncertainties and fears all the same.

The meaning of the move for Yuzuru deserves to be told by Yuzuru himself, so please do check the Wiki page on this forum. A good start is the presscon itself, with english interpreter, and the "The Never-Ending Challenges" Yuzu special that got aired on July 23rd (here the subbed version).

The following is instead a (uncomplete) retelling of the event from fandom POV (you can also check here for live reactions watching the presscon):

    The presscon was announced all of a sudden and out of the blue on July 18th, and after, at the start of the month, his name had been added by JSF to the list of actively competing skaters, so everyone was expecting to see him in comp next autumn and we were already trying to guess his GP assignments (which, coincidentally, were unusually late!).

Ngl, it was a BIG SHOCK and till he didn't say the words "turning pro" many were in denial, or torn. And, again, ngl, for many it was hard to accept, especially new fans who had found him only recently and hadn't had the chance to "experience" him in comps. There was also the big question mark of what he'd do, because maybe he'd go full hermit and then would we be living in permanent Drought? Would we never had the chance to see him skate on a prper big rink? Watch his cool down? See him do crazy jumps? Experience the Thrill competitions gave? See him in UA?.....

    ...BUT not even 1 month into it, we realized we had nothing to fear, on the contrary!(≧▽≦)

An almost unprecedented FLOOD of EVERYTHING swept us away: countless Yuzu appearances on media, specials, magazines...AND Yuzuru gave us one surprise after the other: his official YT channel, and his first livestreaming event, SharePractice (with SEIMEI clean OGM layout!), watched live by more than 100000 people, then his OFFICIAL SNS!!!* (✧u✧) twitter and instagram and then ALSO his first iceshow as a pro-athlete, and a SOLO one at that, something basically unprecedented (at least in the last decades, wikipedia editors are still hunting for infos about, like, pre-WWII or somehting like that), PROLOGUE! (*꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ) ╰(*´︶`*)╯ (ok Prologue entry still not ready sorryyyy I totally blame the yuzuflood since past July! I haven't recovered yet!)

*but DON'T expect Yuzuru to lose his hermit habits! And even if you may wish to see him more often, more casually, just be sure that he's working quietly so next time we see him he'll blows our minds even more! So let him be a happy hermit (っ˘ω˘ς )

Stealing other people's music accents = apparently Yuzuru needs to time everything to the music, it doesn't really matter whose

Strawberry costume = Zig costume^(x) (2010-11 season). It was designed by the one and only Johnny Weir and realized with much love by mamaHanyu (x)

Superhero that can fly = Yuzuru Hanyu, who was featured in Google's Year in Search 2019 video. ٩(^ᴗ^)۶

When he appears, the caption is, verbatim, "super heros that can fly" (around the 1:01 mark, where you can see his beauty of a 3Lz from SCI2019 Origin). He also appeared on a billboard in Times Square, New York (pic of Yuzuru in Otonal costume, during his sit spin). Here at 0:14 you can spot the pic during the New year countdown too!

The Swan = Yuzuru. Did you know swans are beautiful to watch but hella fierce? (and look how fast this one moves)

Swan bag = a bag used to restrain swans for safe transportations. Also, what Brian would like to use on a certain Swan, so his hair would stop falling... Joking!

Weird sentence, you say? Why is it even in this glossary, you ask?

Well, imagine being the newly crowned 2 x OGM and saying those words on national tv... to the voice actor of Tokyo Ghoul character Kaneki. Rightfully an iconic Yuzu moment! XD

Tano jump = when skaters jump with one arm above the head. It was popularized by Brian Boitano.

There are many different tano jumps out there but the arm position can vary quite a lot and not all of them are pretty Med & other Russian sr and jr ladies brought tano to another level but with the new GOE system it became less advantageous, so we see fewer tanos now.

TCC = Toronto Cricket (Skating and Curling) Club, aka Yuzuru's training place in Toronto, Canada.

It's a private club hosting a variety of facilities for different sports. The FS program is run by Brian Orser  & Tracy Wilson (who also teaches skating skills classes), and it also hosts many other specialists like Ghislain Briand, jump specialist, or Paige Aistrop, spins specialist. Some Canadian choreographers have long-standing collabs too (starting from David Wilson, but also Jeffrey Buttle and Shae-Lynn Bourne). For some interesting facts about TCC watch this!

Yuzu moved to TCC following his first WC medal in Nice2012 (Noriko Shirota, who helped Yuzuru moving abroad and also would later be part of his ANA team, recounts the events in Chapter 6 of her book). More under spoiler!

In 2020 the pandemic (+ Canada being particularly strict with its requirements for people who want to travel there) resulted in Zu training alone in Sendai. Formally, he is still with TCC, so Brian&co are still his coaches and they were with him rinkside and in K&C in WC2021.

Yuzuru's experience and personality (plus Zu being wiser now and therefore slightly less prone maybe to wilding too much when there no one there to stop him we hope) would still allow him to manage his own training and achieve brilliant results ー as JNats2020 proved ー. But he also said that it was hard, being so lonely in training. T.T

July 2021 update: Yuzuru declared that he plans to stay in Japan for now, given ongoing travel difficulties and his fruitful, if though, experience the previous season. Since his planned competitions for the first half of the season are all in Japan, minus RC in Sochi, Russia, having Japan as training base also means reducing the amount of interational travel!

In his post-JNats2021, Yuzuru specifically credited his TCC team&both his traditional choreographers Shae-Lynn Bourne and Jeffrey Buttle for helping him and creating Roncapu. In Beijing2022 Yuzuru chose not to have coaches sitting with him in the K&C (nor overseeing his practices).

Whatever Zu decides for his future training arrangements, let's keep support him! (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧

TEB = Trophée Éric Bompard. Older name of the French GP event (before French fed managed to lose the sponsor). See IdF.

Ten to Chi to, or TenChi for short = Yuzuru's FS for season 2020-21, a program that he deeply feels as truly his, based on soundtrack from a Japanese Taiga drama series centered on the historical figure of Uesugi Kenshin.

Generally translated into english as "Heaven and Earth" (H&E), the literal translation would be "Heaven and Earth, and". More on the nuances of the title and accurate translation to english here and here).

Yuzuru has already announced he's keeping the program as free program for olympic season 2021-22!

The ICE = a Japanese ice show. It used to be Mao Asada's show, but in recent years other skaters have headlined it.

Since Yuzu hasn't skated there for the longest time, for fanyus The ICE is just 2011 + 2012... and synonym for rare WILD footage:

• fleeting footage of Yuzu dancing with Mao (here)
• Yuzu whipping out 4S3A seq (sequence under older rules) at 17yo + wholesome hug with his new TCC rinkmate Javier Fernandez + Mao cheering (see 8:36, here also 4T3Aseq)
• Yuzu playing fake-drunk pirate  in group number
• hoodie Yuzu skating with Alena Leonova (3:55)
• iconic Yuzu in skirt and pink top in dance battle with Meryl Davis and Alex Shibutani, Jeff Buttle acting as the judge (spoiler: Yuzu came in second XD)
• Yuzu in all boys group numbers where he's by far the coolest, but since back then Yuzucam wasn't a thing yet, most of the times he's in the background (or completely out of frame), making us fans very kuyashii about all the footage we deserved but never got (see 2011 and 2012 group numbers)

TJ = usually, Team Japan. How not to stan all* of them, when they are so talented and adorable? (♡°▽°♡) *ok maybe not all of them, but many

(in lieu of the recent - as of 2020/21 - happenings in FS involving a certain US skater by the name of TJ, heads up that you might want to look at the context when seeing the "TJ" acronym floating around)

Toe socks = Yuzuru's fave type of socks! Here for some toe socks live-action footage XD They have even earned a short feature on jpn tv (here)!

Searching for info about Zuzu's toe socks, I stumbled upon the weirdest and unxpected tweet ( : ౦ ‸ ౦ : )

Tomato = a food Yuzuru really likes! (*˘︶˘*).｡.:*♡

His love for tomato goes back to his mushroom years(see here). But sometimes his love for tomatoes betrayes him, see the Paprika accident...

Trashbag pants = black tight-fitting shiny pants that wish they looked like tight badass leather pants but resemble...well, the material of trash bags :P Yuzuru used them in quite a number of outfits (mostly for ice-shows or EX), ranging from this ^(x)(MI, 2009-10) and this^(x) ლ(ಠ_ಠ ლ) (Vertigo 2010-11) to this^(x) (HILY, 2012-13 Season) and this (FaoI Makuhari 2017 Opening). One could say he's...grown into the look! And he even used a similar type of pants for his LMEY costume! (•̀ᴗ•́)و ̑̑

    Team Trashbag pants = fans who will defend those pants from any slander by those who hate those pants.

Troll practice = Yuzuru's first ICONIC practice at OWG2018, after basically 3 months of complete media silence in his part. Here to see the unforgettable practice notes by J.W*ng and here a video recap!

Context (that made it especially hilarious but also frustrating but also a masterclass in the Art or War): after injuring his right ankle at NHK17 Yuzu WD from NHK, then from JNats. In the 3 months leading to PC, a short written message was all we got. No one knew anything - where he was, if and how much he had recovered... -. Then it was announced that Yuzu would not take part in the OWG Team event either. Finally, last among FS competitors, he arrived in Korea.

Everyone was waiting with bathed breath for his first practice to glean his physical condition & jump repertoire. Media had mass-gathered to the practice rink just for him, journalists and blogger all ready to detail every small step and misstep. 15 minutes into the training session, Yuzuru finally jumped the first 3A and then... he bowed, grinned and left, leaving everyone hanging! (≧▽≦๑)

Later, he held a whole press con (no subs, but there's an interpreter) so poor media could have something to write about XD (and stopped bothering him or his coaches after every practice. It turns out that press con was a masterclass in the Art of War too. Zu of course omitted to disclose that he was still operating on painkillers and sheer willpower o_O)

Trollzuzu, Trollzuru = Yuzuru looking  but internally being like

example: saying after WC17 that he hadn't decided yet the music for his Olympic2018 FS, while he'd already decided the previous year (here). Or announcing that his new 2020-21 SP was Let me entertain you but not saying which one among the different versions he had picked. Or skating a whole rt of his FS but still leaving reporters at a loss about which music he was using (ノ∀￣•)

UA = Under Armour. It's a brand of athletic sports clothing, but Yuzu fans use UA to refer to his whole practice outfit. Yuzuru's signature training gear consist of form-fitting UA long sleeved t-shirt(+a short sleeved one underneath), black trousers (from a different brand) and black skate covers. Sometimes Yuzuru's UA tee is personalized with a meaningful motto or a quote (from e.g. a song he likes). Fans have fun deciphering them from pics, here you can find a few.

The UA look is VERY popular, to the point that in Japan they published a whole photobook solely consisting of Yuzu in training gear...

Uncles = ahhh, this is complex LOL.

Among skaters the Uncles are those belonging to the "older generations" (in skating terms, men are said to reach their prime around 23-24, so they become uncles starting from about 26-27 years). In the season of OWG2018, Javi and PChiddy were affectionately considered uncles. Voronov is the most uncle of them all, though. EDIT: now it's 2021, so... is our doesn't-look-like-he-aged-1-day Yuzu really an uncle? (⊙_⊙) _(:3」∠)_

Among FS commentators, Uncles are all male commentators.

Among random people, Uncles are just middle-aged men (see fan uncle). Also, we affectionately call Jpn photographers (who have often seen Yuzuru grow through the years of competitions) "uncles", too. (b ᵔ▽ᵔ)b  e.g. Sendai-born Sunao Noto is one of the most famous and beloved "photographers uncles" (here to learn more about him and his "encounter" with Yuzuru). .｡.:*☆

UR = underrotation. An underrotated jump lacks part of the required rotations in the air. The BV of jumps missing ¼ or more of the final rotation is reduced and the jump is given one < in the scoresheet. Also see: carrot, carrot cake.

the wallet is weeping = our wallets’ default mode when Yuzuru merch, books and magazines are released. v(T▽T)

Warhorse = a music that has been used many, many, TOO MANY times in FS. Most times, it makes long-time fans react like this:  (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

If you're a FS newcomer, it probably won't bother you much, but don't worry! After one season you'll be as fed up with certain pieces as the rest of us!

A few examples: Swan Lake, RJ in all its declinations, Carmen, POTO, Moulin Rouge(MR), lately also LaLaLand (LLL) and the Greatest Showman. Look, we have a Warhorse Bingo too!!!!

Olympic season is particularly full of warhorses, because the reality of this sport is that skating to pieces already familiar to judges is a lot less risky than choosing unknown pieces that could be received less well...

Watered cacti = us satellites after being fed any kind of Yuzuru content. Even the 1000th magazine cover with the same iconic White Armani T-shirt will do. Or a single new White Wall pic. Yes, we are THAT desperate.

Water us! = basically what we're pleading for all the time!  

Even right after having been properly watered, we're already moaning "I miss Yuzuuuuu!!!"(ಥ﹏ಥ)

But Yuzuru will do what Yuzuru wants, and we gotta respect that.

WC = Worlds = World Championships. Annual FS competition and the major one after OWG. Held in the second half of the skatng season, usually in late March.

WD = withdrawal /to withdraw from a competition.

Usually (but not always!) involving injury or some other health issue T﹏T (especially if the WD happen very unexpectedly and very close to the comp. Or during the comp).

E.g. Yuzuru's WDs following his NHK17 & COR18 ankle injuries (those were all the more heartbreaking because we saw the injury happen) or his WD from JNats2016 due to flu. >_< 

Family issues, personal strategies or other committments, or even a global pandemic can be reasons why a skater chooses to WD (e.g. Yuzuru announcing his WD from 2020 GP series).

WDs are NOT to be confused with retirement (cfr "the R-word")

We don't talk about Boston = well, that's not true, we do talk about Boston (Worlds2016, and the months that followed). But in such a way that evokes the darkest doom and gloom because that WC is kind of a fanyu collective trauma, that keeps haunting those fans who've lived through it but also keeps being heartbreaking even for fans who got to know about Boston only years after the event (and despite knowing that Yuzuru had been to overcome what happened there) T___T

White Armani T-shirt = the iconic white tee Yuzu wore for the media day photoshoot 2017-18 and that was featured in 327899000 magazines (and on their cover). Just look at this! The following season it was replaced by the equally iconic Black Armani T-shirt.

WhiteLGC = see WPOH.

White Sweater = the sweater Yuzuru wore for a couple of Ghana CMs (the one where he prepared hot chocolate with entirely too many marshmellows and other stuff, but also the hot choco with zunda). Here for more vids!

White salad = see Crystal fairy.

The White Wall = Yuzu's fave sidekick during the Great Drought. Featured in multiple short vids, it's... well, just a white wall, yeah. An undescriptive white wall that Yuzuru has carefully selected as neutral background for his updates from his cave. Though sometimes his backgorund is... *dramatic drumrolls*... a White Corner!!!!!!!

White Wall is good. White Wall is our dear friend and we can't wait to see it again ヽ(>∀<☆)ノ ('cause, you know, it means we're getting some Yuzu crumbs).

Whole package = the mythical unicorn of FS!  (meaning: a precious rarity)

Skaters that are good at EVERYTHING, from jumps to spins and steps and expression and whatever you can think about, and whose scores* are pretty balanced between TES and PCS (or are pretty close to be maxed out on both). Basically, Yuzuru. (๑˘︶˘๑)

(*though, scores can't always be trusted. Learining about FS is the only way to tell for yourself whether scores reflect skills!)

Wisteria costume = the costume Yuzuru wore when he skated to White Legend and Hana ni Nare for 24h TV 2021. The name is self-explanatory, there is wisteria on the costume! Forgive me the low quality weirdly edited screenshots, currently we still have no official pics of this costume ;_;

WPOH = White Pants Of Holiness or WhiteLGC. LGC costume 1.0, or the floating face! White pants on white ice aren't the best idea^(x), but with proper lighting and proper background things change. And under show lightings^(x) it looks so good!!!!!!!!

WR = in a fair world, Yuzuru's PB, always. World Record. It's the highest PB ever registered in a particular FS discipline at a certain moment in time. Nope, no one cares that the ISU doesn't use the word. WR sounds much cooler than the ISU 'highest PB ever'. ( ￣＾￣)

New WRs can be achived thanks to change in the rules (like allowing or not certain elements), change in scoring (like BV or GOE range), out of sheer BV, out of fed backing&coach reputation (because FS is a judged sport with a rich history of biased scoring), or simply because you are The Whole Package Hanyu  very very very VERY good.

WS = World Standing. It's complicated stuff, so I'm just gonna drop this link. Yes, I am that lazy. But many thanks to Alice the-real-xmonster who did all the hard work! (´∀`)ｂ

While in other sports it's very relevant, in FS it usually it's not that relevant for one's reputation, but it can matter for starting order in the SP, and can also be one of the (many) criteria used by skating federation for GP spots allottment and WC and OWG assignments too.

Of course, WS >>>> when Yuzuru is #1 there ;P

(jokes aside, WS is heavily dependent on how many ad which competitions skaters attend, other than on placements)

WTT = World Team Trophy. It's a semi-fluff team competition held every two years in Japan after WC.

Skaters compete in teams (one for each country, 6 countries in total) and try their best to look ridiculous while cheering on their teammates.

As it's the last competition of the season + skaters are usually drained by then + it has less at stake than WC,(*) things like the WTT17 Men FS event can happen (cf: pop concert).

Skaters are usually happy to take part in WTT because 1)awesome audience!!! 2)chances for shows opportunities in Japan if they can leave an impression 3)much richer prizes compared to any other ISU competition. Prize money are offered by JSF, not by ISU.

(*)unless you are Yuzuru Hanyu, then you're gonna put lots of pressure on yourself anyway...

Yellow duster = the yellow cape in the Dory costume. Well, the resemblance is there...(rumour has it that a satellite's swiffer duster  wanted to try new things, see the world!).

YOLO and #YOLO = You Only Live Once.  Yuzu's fans, on the contrary, might not survive.

For Zu, it means messing a jump and changing the layout on the fly to make up for the mistake and contain the loss of points (all of this while skating and spinning and doing more jumps). Often executed with such finesse that the YOLO jump can go unnoticed to satellites that he has hypnotized (otherwise they would be traumatized, he's a merciful King of #YOLO). Yet another cause of Borser's receding hairline.:darklordyuzu:

Yonkaiten = It means four revolutions (jump). It’s one of the fist word non-Japanese speaking fans learn to recognize when hearing Yuzu talking.

Yonkaiten Axel = 4A (see Nessie). Starting from that fateful (troll)TVsegment with 4A simulation back in summer 2017, media (and Yuzu) have been throwing around those two words with alarming frequency (°ロ°)!

And Yuzuru has repeatedly declared it's his last big childhood dream and he's working hard to achieve it!

"You give us the Truth amidst all this nonsense we hear" = ok I'm cheating a bit with this one since it's actually a quote, but this whole post-OWG18 press conference is a gem (FCCJ = The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan). And those words are absolutely right, Yuzuru's skating keeps shining and touching us regardelss and beyond scores and medal.

also adding again the Wikiquote link, where you can find many other memorable Yuzu quotes like "Artistry is founded upon absolute technical prowess" and "Efforts will lie, but they will not be in vain".

Yuzu = how Yuzuru is called by his family and friends. Many fans call him like that, too. And fellow skaters, and coaches, and tv commentators.... Tbh basically everyone now calls him Yuzu.  UwU♥

yuzu  = a variety of citrus fruits, to be found mainly in east Asia. Kanji for yuzu the fruit are different from those for Yuzu, but who cares, fans will still jump at every opportunity to get yuzu-flavoured foods and products XD

Yuzucam = when, during opening/finale and group numbers or practices, with many skaters on ice, offical broadcasters focus mostly on Yuzuru. It delights us, even if we feel a lil bit bad for the other skaters... But when we get no yuzucam we're very kuyashii, so... GIVE US YUZUCAM ALWAYSSSS!!!! ٩(♡ε♡)۶

YuzuCon = whenever a large group of Yuzu fans gathers. It involves exchange of gifts, laughs, loud cheering, getting confused over which language you're speaking with whom, Pooh rain and much more! Sometimes it also involves freezing your arse in the early hours of the morning while queing outside of the skating venue to get to see Yuzu's practices (while chatting with fellow fans queing, exchanging more gifts, laughing...and panicking in forums or twitter becuase practice is approaching and they are still not letting you in).

Since in the last few seasons every comp Yuzu attends always had LOTS of Yuzu fans, every comp he attends also becomes a YuzuCon!

Yuzu crumbs = those teeny tiny updates (in the form of short vids, pics posted on other skater's accounts, interviews or offical statements through JSF or sponsors) that Yuzu give us when he's in his hermit mode. He is such a considerate king (´ ω `♡)

Yuzudory = another name for the Dory costume.

Yuzumoticon = Yuzuru-themed emoticon. Please feel free to spam them on this Planet! :dancingpooh:

YuzuPooh = Yuzuru's new best friend tissue case starting from JNats2020!

In 2019, Disney had launched a Yuzu Pooh series in Japan, with Winnie the Pooh holding a yuzu fruit in its plushie paws (and it's entirely possible that they knew they'd been luring all those fanyus who probably are responisble for a good chunk of their sales). The new merch was an instant hit among Yuzu fans, and yuzuPoohs soon joined all the other Pooh variations (from the classic, to the round ones, to Sakura Pooh) in the pooh rain.

And then, at Japan Nationals in December 2020, after 10 months of no on-ice appearance, Yuzuru brought a brand new tissue case rinkside: a superfluffy cute Pooh holding a yuzu! Imagine our surprise when we saw that, after so many years of exemplary service by Old man Pooh-san, a YuzuPooh had made it to Yuzuru's side! (♡°▽°♡)

So, in the K&C now we can observe Yuzu holding a Pooh holding a yuzu: Yuzuception! (from the movie Incepition and its dream within a dream concept). We even got this: a Yuzu holding a Pooh holding a yuzu and a smolYuzu too!

Yuzuru Hanyu = we don’t need to explain this, right?(♡˙︶˙♡) Just in case, here’s a brush-up for who Yuzuru is, and the meaning of his name!

Sadly, it looks like some people, especially commentators and reporters, often get the name wrong. Some examples:

Yazunori Hanya, Yuzuru Hamyulla, Yuzro Hanro, Yuzura... people really butchering Yuzuru’s name, especially in the past (ー_ー)

Yuzuru's (right) ankle = a most precious thing ❀ and the source of endless worry for us fans ಠ_ಠ

Below, an all too-frequent fanyu mood:

As a counter-clockwise jumper, Yuzuru needs his right foot to land all his jumps, and it's also his picking foot for Lz and F. Loop also takes off from the right foot, so 3Lo and even more 4Lo need a significant push from that foot. Of course he needs that foot to skate too, but obviously jumps (especially quads and those jumps that take off from right foot, F and especially Lo and Lz) are a major burden for his right ankle.

In recent years, right ankle injuries have forced Yuzuru out of competition a number of times (too many, honestly), so that special, special ankle features prominently in our prayers. Further details and painful recollections to follow, under spoiler:

Skating gods & Universe gave him lots of talents and in abundance, but Health apparently isn't one of them >_<

Here a beautiful delayed single axel landed on a healthy ankle with beautiful running edge and gorgeous knee bend to cheer you up, that right ankle is truly magical ✧｡.:*♡

Yuzushenko = apparently bb Yuzuru's nickname, originating from his Plushenko-inspired haircut XD

Zamboni = the machine used to resurface ice rinks, also called 'ice resurfacer' (here to know more). Don't ask me how I found this video, but if you wanna know how it works... Ci

Zazura = another fan-made name for Yuzuru, born as a joke after all the mangling his poor name endured at the hands of commentators and reporters.

Zu = another fandom nickname for Yuzuru. Shorter for Zuzu, because we do love our nicknames, and the shorter, the better! Especially when one has to type while not looking at the keyboard (e.g.: while watcing a livestreaming, or when one's vision is too blurry because *feels*) (/ω＼)

Zunda = sweet soybean paste special to Sendai. Yuzuru said he loves zunda mochi and he has used zunda when preparing hot chocolate in one of his Ghana CMs.

You can see some examples of Sendai zunda-based foods here and here, while you can use these fanmade recipes for Yuzu-style hot chocolate with home-made zunda and zunda mochi. Enjoy! ♡ (˘▽˘)

Zunda Seimei = nickname for the SEIMEI 3.0 costume. The the green of the details reminded people of zunda, and since zunda is a Sendai specialty and Yuzuru loves it...! (*ᵔ▿ᵔ*)

On a more serious note, it looks like the colour actually is moegi, the green of young leaves in spring. Here and here for some additional thoughts on the meaning of the color choice & historical context. ～☆

Fans also refer to the costume as neon Seimei or highlighter Seimei.

anything-zuru = nickname to refer to a particular aspect/look/event involving Yuzuru.

examples: baldzuru, eggzuru, rarezuru (=rare Yuzu appearance e.g. in white or red UA) smolzuru...

Zusa (or zusaa or zusaaaa...just add how many "a" you want!) = this particular knee-slide of Yuzu's. Origin of the name unknown (onomatopeia, phenomime?). Signature movement in Yuzuru's LGC, it's a crowd pleaser whenever he does it in gala and iceshows, too. Note the flexibility+speed+control+the arm&hands flourish! Zuzu = fans' nickname for Yuzuru. Plus, it sounds super cute!

Some notes:

• Videos from official channels are highlighted in bold. Chances are good that these clips won't be taken down.
• Update (August 2022): FNN and NHK turned most of their videos private. They are not deleted yet, so it's possible to "resurrect" them, as it happened with the LMEY video on the German ARD Sportschau channel.
   
• It is interesting that there is no individual program that really strikes out. It's a relatively even distribution in time and music style.
• Lyrical programs seem to be just as popular among viewers as Japanese pieces or modern rock/pop numbers.
• And we have performances of every Olympic cycle from baby Romeo to LMEY today.
• It's also apparent that the videos did not went viral because of the enormous popularity of the music piece, but rather because of Yuzu's exciting and attracting way of skating.
