GPS 2017 NHK Trophy

I was going to post a list of news clips regarding NHK Trophy like I did after ACI and COR, however, as we know, Hanyu senshu withdrew from the competition due to injury he got during an official practice on the day before the competition. His injury and withdrawal were reported in many news programs, however, many of them consisted of nothing but the footage of the fall, or worse, the footage and assumptions/not-so-correct information that, at this moment, seem to be better buried under the sea of other news.

So this time I would like to share only several clips that fall into following categories:

-Clips aired prior to the competition to promote it, which include his own comments.

-News clips related to his injury and withdrawal that include comments directly from him, his team member, representative of JSF, co-organizer (the broadcaster) of the event.

Considering the contents of the news, this time I will attach transcription and translation to the latter in hope of avoiding misunderstandings, as well as providing a way to know the contents without seeing the footage of the accident.

Announcer: Men’s event will start tonight from 7 pm, though people involved say it seems difficult for him to participate in it. Hanyu was looking to complete three-peat this year and had been drawing attention as to how close his performance would get to perfection until the Olympics which will be held next year.

Announcer: …short program will be held after this. However, unfortunately, Yuzuru Hanyu had to withdraw from this competition due to right ankle ligament injury. He was aiming to win three consecutive titles in this competition. Mr. Honda, it is very unfortunate but he injured himself in an official practice held yesterday, right?

Honda: Yes, I was watching the practice in person. His timing was a bit off than usual, so he could not control his rotation to coordinate with the height of the jump and fell really hard on the ice since the jump he attempted was a quad.

Announcer: Ms. Suzuki, how do you take his withdrawal?

Suzuki: It must have been really difficult to make the decision to withdraw, but considering that this is an Olympic season, I think it was a wise decision.

Announcer: At the end of December there will be Nationals, and it is very important competition, isn’t it? Mr. Oda, how do you take it (=Yuzu’s withdrawal)?

Oda: I’m simply worried. I really am. I truly wish him fastest recovery, and I pray from bottom of my heart that we will soon be able to see him smiling on the ice because there are so many people rooting for him.

Announcer: Oh, yes. As Ms. Suzuki said, it takes courage to withdraw, doesn’t it?

Oda: Absolutely. He needed to take part in this competition to qualify for GPF. In that regard, this competition was very important for him and I’m sure that he himself was strongly wishing to participate. However, as Ms. Suzuki said, I think it was a wise decision considering his injury.

Announcer: It was this afternoon when the news of his withdrawal came in, so we can imagine that he had considered various options until the very last moment. As we heard from Mr. Honda, the accident occurred during an official practice held yesterday. We are going to hear more about it seeing the footage of the practice.

02:06-

Caption (top left):

Yesterday

Official practice

Announcer: This is how Hanyu senshu showed up in the official practice held in the afternoon yesterday. First, he was skating as if to try to get the feel of the ice. He skipped the other practice session held yesterday morning and the unofficial practice held the day before, so this was the first time he got on this ice. Then about 10 minutes later, he began to practice quads. And around ten past four…

02:45-

Caption (top left):

Yesterday

Around 4:10 p.m.

Announcer: He attempted the quad newly included this year… (he realizes it was not the 4Lz) …This might be the one. This is the moment. Mr. Honda, this happened right in front of you…?

Honda: Yes. His axis was a bit tilted forward from the moment of his take-off, so he might have considered to checkout earlier, but since he initiated the rotation to rotate four times in the air, he could not control the momentum until he hit the ice.

Announcer: Then he frowned and seemed to be concerned about his right foot, and got off the ice for a while, probably to give some sort of first aid to it. There was a buzz in the arena…

Honda: Yes…

04:01-

Honda: And he got back on the ice before his run through, after getting off the ice for a while.

Announcer: Yes, he came back here and started his run through… of his free program, but he was like this.

Honda: I think he was feeling discomfort… and probably pain in his right foot. His mind seemed to be pretty much on it while he was skating.

Announcer: He just checked the flow of the program and did not attempt any jump. Mr. Honda, I heard that you had hurt similar part of your body in the past. He must have been suffering a considerable pain, I suppose?

Honda: I suppose so, too. His body went against the flow of the jump, so it looked like he hit the back of his knee too.

Announcer: This is the footage of Hanyu senshu in an official practice held yesterday afternoon, where he fell and injured himself.

06:02-

Announcer: He injured his right foot which is his landing foot.

Honda: Yes, it’s his landing foot, but he has to use it when he does spins and step sequences too. He also has to take off from right foot when he does his favorite jump, quadruple Loop, so I suppose the pain was really bad.

Announcer: Suffering right ankle ligament injury, Hanyu senshu is going to focus on his treatment for the injury and then conditioning for Nationals in December. We are very sorry to have to bring you such news, but we hope he will soon recover from the injury and be able to prepare for Nationals in December and the Olympics which will be held in 3 months.

I’ve just come back from injury myself, so… um… I want to say, “Please don’t push yourself too hard now, and to be able to skate well in Nationals, gan…” (t/n: she probably was going to say ganbatte, then looked for better words) um… I just hope he won’t push himself too hard now and will get better soon.

Announcer: How about you, Mr. Oda?

Oda: He said, “I want to be much, much, stronger.” It was good to hear such positive words from Hanyu senshu. You know, the severity of his injury of course matters, but his mental state matters too… As we say, “Our state of mind produces our illness.” When you are depressed, your body doesn’t get healed steadily, so, it’s good to hear such positive words from him.

Japanese Nationals 2017

As we know, Yuzuru Hanyu withdrew from Nationals due to the injury he suffered during an official practice at NHK Trophy. However, before/during/after Nationals, we received some updates on his condition along with the news about his withdrawal and Olympic team selection. Following is a list of news clips include such news.

I will attach transcription and translation to some clips as I did in NHK posts. However, some of them are not full-translation/transcription. This time I translated/transcribed official announcements, comments directly from people who had contact with him during that period (e.g. Yoshiko Kobayashi of JSF, Nobunari Oda). Clip 23 is an exception. It does not include an official announcement or a comment from those who had contacted him, but it includes a comment from Takeshi Honda who had suffered the same injury during his competitive career. In the comment he refers to an advice he got from Brian Orser at that time and it lets us get a glimpse of how they cope with a forced break in their training. The clip also includes a footage of Yuzu looking ahead to PyeongChang right after Sochi.

Note: In some of these clips you will find doctors and therapists commenting on his injury but none of them have actually seen his injury. They are just speaking from their experience.

Toward PyeongChang
How is Yuzuru Hanyu’s right ankle?
Fierce competition among ladies over the two spots

Announcer: OK, the first news we are going share, Mr. Oda, is a bit concerning. Here it is, it’s about Hanyu senshu.

Oda: Yes.

Announcer: He made a comment. (Indicating the text printed on top left of the flip board) In his comment as of Dec. 10th, he said, “(I) haven’t been able to resume on-ice training because I still have pain”.

Oda: Actually, prior to that I had sent a message to Hanyu because it was his birthday. I messaged, “Happy birthday”, and he replied, “Thank you always for kind words”. Then another message arrived which said, “I’ll do my best to be able to resume on-ice training soon”. So I knew he hasn’t been able to get back on the ice yet…

Announcer: So you knew it. (Indicating the text printed on bottom left of the flip board and a figure of right ankle printed on the right side of the board) And yesterday, an additional comment was released in which he said: “It was found that I’ve hurt a ligament which takes more time to heal than a normal sprain”.

Oda: You know, when it’s your right foot… You have to land all the jumps on your right foot. As you know I myself had hurt my right knee not so long ago. (Landing jumps) is such a burden on your right foot, so I think it’s better to first let it heal completely and then resume on-ice training. Hanyu senshu can regain his jumping skills in no time. Given a few days, he would become able to land quads again. He is that talented. So there really is no need to rush. (I want to say to him,) “Take your time, take your time”.

Announcer: Let’s take a look at the calendar. Here it is. Men’s SP at Nationals will be on Dec. 22nd… (to the cameraman) could you zoom in on this? Men’s SP is scheduled on this day. Nationals starts from here, but pushing himself too hard for it could cause…

Oda: Right. So whether he takes part in the competition or not is a key point to watch. Even when he doesn’t, he will have to resume training by mid-January to get ready for the Olympics…

Announcer: (Men’s individual event at) PyeongChang Games will be on 16th, so it’s preferable to start training at least a month prior to the event?

Oda: I think so. You know, without doing run-throughs it’s difficult to get physically ready to skate the free program. I just want to tell him to stay healthy!

Announcer: And keep calm.

Oda: I really want him to stay healthy.

Announcer: And not rush things. We’ll deliver more news on sports.

Oda: OK.

Announcer: These are the selected skaters. While people considered Uno senshu and Hanyu senshu would arguably be selected, Keiji Tanaka grasped the third spot.

Oda: His 3 quads attempt has been rewarded.

Announcer: Now (the focus of attention is on) the medals. Let me ask you frankly, how is Hanyu senshu doing now?

Oda: Well, actually I sent a LINE message to him when he withdrew from Nationals. My message was like “Yeah, you withdrew from the competition, but you’ll get well soon and everything will be fine. I’ll go to PyeongChang too, and be waiting for you, so let’s get together when we have a chance”, and he replied that he was looking forward to seeing me. It could be that he was just pretending that he was doing fine, but what we can do now is to pray for his fast recovery from the injury and to believe that he can… that he’ll come back soon. I always say that his skill in figure skating doesn’t rust even when he has taken some time off. No matter how many months of break he has taken, I think he would be able to regain two types of quads in a week with no problem.

Announcer: Usually such skill would rust a bit when you take some time off, but…

Oda: Yes.

Announcer: It doesn’t apply to Hanyu senshu.

Oda: That’s right.

Announcer: So there is a good chance (that he will win) once he has recovered.

Oda: And if he has the stamina. I think how much he has been able to train himself off the ice to maintain his stamina will be another key factor.

Announcer: We look forward to his comeback.

Oda: Wish him good luck.
