I rewatched the FS a few times and I actually discovered a few gems!  It really has a lot more choreography than Helsinki.  It is not very noticeable but the “clenching wrist” move was back in the hydroblade!  And at 3:28-3:29 of this video, there was a really cool arm movement too.

https://youtu.be/mZDRYWgbqUw

It was an amazing performance despite the falls!

Also I wonder if the fall and pop on his axels were because it was really tough to swing his right leg up with full force due to the right ankle.  I know he said it felt numb at the time but subconsciously he must have pulled back.

Now in hindsight I wish he would have just let himself pop the 4Lo during practice or even let his body fall fully sideways instead of trying to land it.....I know it was a split second thing :sadPooh:

Yuzu, please rest and heal and be happy knowing that you don’t owe us anything and we are so grateful for all the joy you have given us.

Update on his injury:
According to Ms. Kabayashi of JFS, the team doctor palpated him and diagnosed that he has "anterior tibiofibular ligament injury", "triangular ligament injury" and is suspected to have damaged peroneal muscle and tendon. Kobayashi said that his ankle is swollen a bit now. The injury is now being treated with icing and compression. He is also trying to lie down putting his foot up. He'll go back to Toronto or Japan to receive a full treatment.

The article point out the diagnosis: Hanyu was diagnosed with apparent damage to two different ligaments, a tendon and his fibula, and the ankle swelled up overnight.  :sadPooh:

Ok so I researched bc I was curious and only read if you want to also hop on the depression train w me tbh.

Obviously not much is known of his injury so this is basically a moot point until we know more (and hopefully these are the worst case scenarios?)

I got too tired to search for triangle ligament damage bc i should still be studying :P

anterior tibiofibular ligament injury

  Hide contents

It can take six to seven weeks before athletes return to play. In those cases in which a separation of the tibia and fibula or fracture has occurred and surgery is necessary, patients will likely need to be non weight bearing in a cast followed by a walking boot for about 12 weeks. It can take a minimum of six weeks and routinely three months or more to return to play, but can sometimes take even longer. A general rule of thumb is that bones take roughly six weeks to heal while soft tissues (e.g., ligaments) take around three months to heal

peroneal muscle tendon injury

  Reveal hidden contents

He really shouldn't skate until he's fully healed bc it will make his injury worse and 3 weeks is not enough time tbh (unless it's not as bad as it sounds which is unlikely:13877886:). I'll support whatever he chooses but please Yuzuru put your health first for now.

Q: Were you frightened when Yuzuru fell at the morning practice on Saturday?

A: Yes, I knew instantly it was not good. I remembered what happened to him before the Olympics. I hoped Yuzuru's injury was not that bad. Luckily, that was the case....

Q: You've mentioned perfectionism. Do you have to be born with this trait or is it possible to train it?

A: Interesting question. I think you hae to be born with it. But Javier Fernandez is an excellent example of how to train it. Hanyu is on another level, it's like he came to us from space.

Consecutive GP series victories. Yuzuru Hanyu’s reasons for skating the FS with an injury at the Cup of Russia

translated by nanoka12

Quote

It is unmistakably a ligament injury, and the doctor told me that 3 weeks of rest was needed. Not just the GPF, but considering the conditioning period, Japanese nationals would also be difficult and it became such that I had to make a choice.  Therefore, after considering what I want to do and what to cut away, I thought there’s only today. There was the consideration that this was Russia which is an important place to me, and also that as the things I have done in training until here are in some way significant things to me, there was what could be described as “I do not want to give up here”, and also that I wanted to somehow show the fruits of my training even just a little.

I also agree with the translator's tags.

Quote

#he didn't mention it here but russia is also where he won his first GPF medal in 2012

#and of course the olympic gold medal in sochi

#he also said some years ago that the first time he was able to perform his donut spin with one arm raised was while practicing in russia

#when he went to bobrin and bestemianova for help with choreography

#it is very much like him to place great importance on and be thankful to this special place

#to the people who have inspired him or helped him in some way and to remember and acknowledge them even many years later

#especially in a season about going back to his origins

#in this place at this competition and in front of these people

#faced with the choices he had it is understandable why he chose to skate

#even if conventional wisdom does not understand

#but if you look back at the path he has taken he has defied conventional wisdom countless times

#and it is part of what makes him who he is

#he made his choices with full understanding of the consequences and he confronts the consequences without self pity or bitterness

#and to me that is inspiring in itself

#heal well soon bb :)

#remember: never underestimate mr hanyu

It's just a little funny how the Russian articles about Yuzu is so much higher in quality than American / CBC ones, even though most Yuzu materials are subbed in English. The Russians managed to point out his strengths, his character, what he is good at, and appreciate him for that across the biggest news platforms, among coaches and fans, even among people who don't skate. Here's Yuzu's intro card at Rostelecom Cup. Beats me if he ever gets this kind of description in US.

Like you wouldn't see US Football directors telling his players "Yuzu's popularity cannot be explained by his talent alone. He has the strength and the character for that, and we should be like him tomorrow for our competition" like the Russian director did.  None of their biggest news agencies talked about Pooh.

Here's some compiled comments from the figure skating community, and here's some compiled comments from the fans.  Yagudin and TAT both recognised that he is smart and reacted quickly when he failed to perform 4T-3T by attaching -1eu-3S instead, the Japanese TV analysed the changes in his FS layouts, and all CBC / US can think about his fans is poohs and controversial tweets.
