Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts in this article.

One part stands out for me:

”When, in Notte stellata, he said he wanted to sacrifice his happiness for skating, and for the mission he has taken on his shoulders to be close to those who suffer, I said ‘No’. It’s OK to be close, to help as much as you can, but not to cancel yourself out for others. I am happy that he changed his mind and chose to share his life with a person he loves and who loves him.”

I’ve seen many comments from fans about his sudden marriage news, not that I looked for them, but they were all over many sns platforms. The way he presented himself as someone who sacrificed everything and anything for his skates had imprinted in the minds of many of his followers for many years. He showed them his hard work, dedication, passion, clear purpose, determination, and even injuries to achieve his dreams. He set a clear vision, worked tirelessly towards it, and that inspired others to do the same.  They knew the road to success wasn’t easy and everyone rooted and cheered for him. They were all extremely happy when he received good results.

Being a fan isn’t easy. Being a fan isn’t unconditionally loving something. It’s loving of what makes something great and emotionally connected. Hence there had to be something more than just enjoyment. It required some hard work, and at times, it could be very stressful, hurtful, and heartbroken, especially the last four years of his competitive career. Fans also have sacrifices. Being connected with fans in every single step of his journey is necessary. I’m not talking about exposing his privacy. I understand he isn’t an idol. He had clearly stated he’s an athlete. However, his pro career is beyond being a figure skater. He’s an artist. Yes, family is a great foundation. Without them, he can’t build anything. But his career wouldn’t be successful without his audience. A lot of this takes planning and thought to keep his audience engaged and connected. He has a wide range of fans and many of whom are actively connected with him online. Keeping them engaged and emotionally connected is his job.

I had no doubt that everyone who followed him wanted him to be happy and get married someday. But the sudden announcement made it impossible for some fans to connect the missing dots. He was alone, and then suddenly married. Again, I’m not talking about exposing his privacy or his family members. There’s no reason the connection between him and his fans needs to end with figure skating. By sharing more of his passions and his life with fans creates an opportunity to strengthen the emotional connection. He could have shared slowly that he wished to have a family in the most subtle way through interviews or behind the scenes. He might have done that through some of his skating programs but they were difficult to interpret as everyone has their own particular way of understanding the meaning or significance. He had said he wanted to take care of his heart during his determination conference but it may be interpreted differently because of the situation where everyone was only focused on his career.

So simply put, a positive fan experience is critical to the success of his career, though I’m not sure if he needs or wants to expand his fan base.

Thank you for allowing me to express my two cents while I have this thought!

Thank you so much for saying this.

Very interesting essay, thank you. Shout out to Sun_Rise, who's constantly digging through the academic databases, finding new and surprising evidences of how unique, inspiring phenomenon, beyond the sport itself, Yuzuru Hanyu is. Although I would have expected from an academic text to refer to the artist by his family name (Hanyu, not Yuzuru; but perhaps that's not a norm in Netherlands, I don't know) and to name the author of the choreography in question, David Wilson, I have learned something new and am grateful.

Thank you for your kind words. :flowers:

Since it is a student's end of term essay I guess we can forgive these shortcomings although I admit I was also surprised to see just "Yuzuru". But overall the argument is nicely presented and supported with good quality literature, I hope in the future we will see more analyses of Yuzu's skating and/or personality, also in top academic journals and books.

  5. Happy Birthday Planet Hanyu! :party0037: :tumblr_inline_mto5i4jHv61qid2nw:

My first online fanyu space, I remember how welcoming everyone here was & I've learned so much! I have great memories from my foetus fanyu days back in 2022.

Thank you so much for everything and for being such a great hub for Yuzu's fans. :tumblr_inline_mto5i3wxFW1qid2nw:

o be honest, I expected more behind the scenes stuff, but I'm really happy with the bits we got. They really started with the most emotional part and ended on a high note with the photo sessions <3

Now... only if we'd get to see some of those photos 🤭

Yes, from the heartbreak to dynamite to Yuzu checking Uchimura's muscles. Quite a journey!

I loved it, overall. The atmosphere there was really nice & Yuzu at the centre of it, you could see and feel the connection these skaters had + Uchimura. I also thought we would see more of Yuzu backstage but in the end all the footage we got was really beautiful and full of joy, hope and light, just like Yuzu in his yellow summery top. :tumblr_m230oqZJaS1qfamg6:

    The passing of a friend

It is with sadness that I share that our fellow Satellite @Muffinator passed away early yesterday morning (USA time) after a battle with an aggressive cancer.  She had mentioned this illness on her profile last year. Some of you may remember her as spearheading a letter campaign last year where she showed tremendous determination in advocating for fairness in FS judging. Those of you who were part of the campaign can vouch for her strong organizational skills, her logical approach and leadership.    Muffinator was a deeply introspective person, and we would often chat about really existential-level Yuzu things.  She was never afraid to speak her mind both on this forum and in private. Her views were interesting and unusual.

She was a devoted Fanyu and found so much joy in watching Yuzu's performances. Even during her illness she often remarked at how watching Yuzu's skating would take her away from the pain, even if it was for a short time. She was able to loose herself in his performances. Looking at Yuzu's photo books also served as a joyful distraction from her suffering. I know she was so grateful for Yuzu's comforting power.  She leaves behind her devoted husband and teenage boy.

As it turned out later, it was her last summer when we exchanged messages about which logo to choose for the letter campaign. She was very practical, able to separate what was important, what was pushing things forward from all the noise, and at the same time to show her utmost commitment, her emotional engagement. And it was this ability of hers, this attention to detail, that was perhaps most moving. And her sincerity.

I hope she's resting in peace where there is no pain, no fear.

Here is a little bit of healing to soothe the mind through the medium of music. The cello suite no 1 in G major has been transposed fro violin, corresponding key being D major. It gives a lighter and brighter sounds perhaps more fitting to Yuzu in flight during one of his mesmerising practice sessions

A collaboration with virtuoso cellist Yo Yo Ma playing this piece would be gorgeous.

The lasting appeal of Bach's music continues to delight music lovers with the perfect blend of musical mastery and the mathematical precision of these Baroque masterpieces.

These slow motion clips are absolutely amazing, the music flows in parallel to these perfect shots, I agree there's some particular fit between Yuzu's movements slowed down and the suite played so lightly. All the jumps in his ANA jacket, at some points he seemed to resign from (further) rotation being at the highest point in the air, almost as if he's hanging there for a while. It also gives you an idea of how high his jumps are.

I truly hope we will have this type of filming for GIFT/NS/Prologue related materials, it's just to show all the magnificence and beauty of Yuzu's skating.

  9. Happy New Year to Everyone here! :tumblr_inline_mto5i3wxFW1qid2nw: It's hard to imagine that the new fanyu year 2023 will be even more exciting and full of surprises but we're in the PRO era right now, so everything is possible! :tumblr_inline_n2pje2YFXq1qdlkyg:

Wishing you all the best, happiness, love, may your dreams come true & all your plans be fulfilled. :8232307:

So Yuzu said he wants to continue working on 4A. On one hand, it's not surprising considering he is who he is. But on the other hand, I do worry a bit about the danger of practicing the 4A. But he knows best what his body can and cannot endure. I just hope he stays happy and healthy. :smiley-angelic001:

I perfectly understand although I also thought that perhaps now that Yuzu is not competing, he's also not so much stressed about the expectations vs competitive results he could not achieve for the reasons we all know about. So this type of pressure and stress is gone, as well as all the other requirements of the competition season. He's setting his own  schedules now. He said back in July he can spread his wings now, his head is somewhere else and he's thriving. This may be giving him additional strength - we've seen Yuzu skating 3 shows in Hachinohe within 4 days with almost no mistakes at all. He really is a PRO athlete.

So many looking forward to see Yuzu.:heartpound:

I read on twitter, that the rehearsals for the show are already taken place.

It must be wonderful to be an artist producing such a tribute to Yuzu, he's most likely going to learn about it. I hope it will bring him joy.

  11. Congratulations :tumblr_inline_mueoe3Yabh1qdlkyg: to all the Satellites who won their tickets already - it's really great to read so many happy reports!

I hope we will have many beautiful testimonies of your GIFT experience here as well. :tumblr_inline_mg16go8gBg1qdlkyg:

Yes, I was referring to the programs that were not by choice with the bracelets or by the suggestions of YT. It's that both Romeo and FFX didn't appear in the initial reports, but he skated both.

That means that the only changes are those that depend on the public.

Have you perhaps seen reports on A Fleeting Dream and/or R&J?

  13. 1 hour ago, Anabel said:

Marika says that the layout was the same as Yokohama, so surely there was also Romeo and FFX. I saw some tweets naming FFX and others Romeo, so I guess yes, both are still included.

But in Yokohama there was no Otonal and no MI. Also Max Ambesi confirms the performance list we collected from the reports before:

    However, now we have this:

  14. Dear @Geo1, I would like to thank you for sharing your very special memories and stories. It was a pure pleasure to read them, like a treat, I read everything, watched all the videos, photos, I was enjoying every detail you mentioned, because that's how your stories felt so real, tangible, your memories so alive, as if all of this happened just yesterday.

But nothing prepared me for your story about how you actually met Yuzu himself - again, with all the details you really managed to make the reader anticipate and to build all the tension before the moment Yuzu came up to you to have a chat. The way you described him and contrasted his everyday look with his image on the rink also makes your story so real, but also the whole moment is described in a way that moved me so much.

    Thank you! :flowers:

The thing is, Yuzuru was actually following the rule book to the letter - everything it asked for, he worked very hard on....and the powers that be changed the rules without actually changing the rulebook, or telling anyone openly - they did it by stealth and manipulation and back room deals, that is another very sad aspect of Yuzuru's experience, he 100% worked to the rules set down by the ISU and federations, and when they realised that Yuzuru would be unbeatable using current rules, they changed course  and direction in the most dishonest way, and Yuzuru must have realised it was because it was the only way to ensure he didn't keep winning and that the USA could win Oly gold again (in 2018 was the plan...but they made sure of it in 2022). When he says he felt like he was being told to retire, he was right - that effectively is what they did to him.

    3 hours ago, Mary_kyo said:

He was indeed explicitly told to retire, back in 2018. Shirota told him right after PYC as she (and everyone inside FS) perfectly knew what USFS and ISU were cooking.

Isn’t it scary how they could “manipulate” the rules without literally anyone complaining? What a scary small community of hell. While the robbery against Kim Yuna was publicly criticized, the robbery against him was never questioned by anyone. Wow.

But I’m glad he didn’t retire right after 2018. Not only we got awesome programs but we also witnessed how he can stay by his ideals without drawing back till the very end like the bravest gladiators. Proof of his golden character in 2022 after proof of his GOAT status in 2018.

In his thesis abstract Yuzu repeats the word rules twice explaining the goal of his study emphasising that thanks to his method (with inertia sensors):

"...the position of each joint can be accurately obtained. In addition, by analyzing the skeleton, it is possible to identify the center of gravity and the contact points (where the pressure increases on the ground and the part where it is installed), and the jump strictly follows the rules. It was possible to quantitatively clarify whether the jump was strictly according to the rules.

So yes, he was following the rules and wanted others to follow them too, but there was also another set of rules: informal, shady, favouring some, where he couldn't win anyway. But as you say, Mary, he won somewhere staying faithful to himself and to his fans and now he's getting his reward somewhere else.

It would be amazing if the next piece of news about this is that Yuzu has taken the research further and has successfully defended it as his Doctoral Thesis and is now Dr Y. Hanyu PhD.

I think he definitely should, one day, that would be his yet another contribution to humanity, but also a great experience for himself, sometimes his intellect seems overflowing!

Thank you so much, quality is amazing! I only have some of the recordings from NHK 4K from JapanTV online service but the picture seems scattered a but, not fluid. Your recordings are great, to be watched on a big screen.

I watched the NHK Trophy and noticed right away that there were quite a couple of empty seats. NHK still had great audience attendance in comparison to the other Grand Prix competitions this season, but it was clearly not as full as with Yuzu. In fact, with Yuzu, the organizers had to hold ticket lotteries, as far as I remember. I doubt they had to do it this time.

Perhaps Yuzu didn't even realize this new feature existed and YouTube just assigned him a random handle. After all, he was extremely busy the last couple of weeks. But he can still change it. :tumblr_inline_mg16go8gBg1qdlkyg:

    Or HanyuYuzuru1111 or YuzuPooh1111 or PoohsYuzu1111. :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

    Spoiler

I checked ticket availability for Espoo and for GPF and for now it looks the audience is going to look quite empty, lots of seats still available, for GPF many sections have never been on sale in the first place, the sections just by rink opposite to the judges have only some seats already taken, these seats would be now all gone if Yuzu was participating, just to add tickets are less expensive than in 2019, so...

I was lucky to watch Day 1 live in PIA arena last Friday. And watch Day 2 in theater in Japan. Would like to share something that was not commented anywhere that I can find. Something different on the ending between Day 1 and Day 2.

Day 1, after HYK, Yuzu bow and went back stage without saying arigato gozaimasu. Me and audience expecting continuation of the show without knowing it was the end. There were no music or video being played. After waited for a while (could be a min or shorter). Audience started clapping, and thats when it hit me, its the end of the show and we should ask for encore. Yuzu adjusted this confusion on Day 2. I only realised this after watching live viewing for Day 2. Also, his hair was a bit messy on Day 1, he used more hairspray for Day 2. :hihi:

    Yuzu is always improving.

You were so lucky! Congratulations and Thank you so much for sharing. Very interesting about this little confusion with encore.

About the hair - I like the more messy hair, actually. :67638860:

    Hi everyone :grouphug:

I want to share this news here too:

I think, it would be a good idea to make some special hashtags trend on that day like:

    #YuzuOnWikipedia

    #ウィキペディアで見る羽生選手

    #HappyWikiBirthdayYuzu

And also link to these two pages:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuzuru_Hanyu_Olympic_seasons

This would increase chances that a) more people will see and read it and b) that Yuzu himself will find out about it.

    What do you think?

    Congratulations, Henni!

Again, super grateful for your work.

Wonderful idea and yes, perhaps we should do that with the hashtags, too.
