I think this translation is pretty accurate about the "things only you can do" part. Just one thing I interpreted differently is: なかなか4回転ルッツに対してのルッツのジャンプじゃないのかもしれないですけど。 In regard to the 4Lz, it may no longer be a lutz jump. Now this is really tough to interpret and only he knows what he really meant, but from the context I would translate this way: It might not be the (suitable) way of jumping a lutz when going for a 4lz. I think it’s perfectly okay and very lovely, but you might want to add the “happy/congrats” part (おめでとう) because 誕生日 only means birthday. If the space doesn’t allow, you can just replace 誕生日 with おめでとう.

I love this place because people here really care about Yuzu and can talk about what we should do as fans in a sensible and constructive way. I just wanted to share a tweet. This fan says (I translated as word-by-word as possible): Hanyu-san said his fans let him concentrate on his competitions, but “I receive a lot of cheering to the point I think it might disturb other skaters” means his concentration broke there. I want to root for him in a way that he doesn’t need to worry about his fans’ behaviors or apologize for them. Even more so if we wish his 4A dream come true. As you can see this tweet got a lot of likes even though the person doesn’t have many followers. Bottom line is that many fans are trying to control themselves for the sake of Yuzu, NOT FOR ANYONE ELSE. I personally don’t care much about how other skaters feel (sorry!) and how badly-behaved other skaters’ fans are, and I couldn’t care less if they harm their favorite’s reputations. As Murieleirum pointed out, Japanese people tend to take responsibility in a larger scale. Yuzu seems to care and worry about people around him, including his fans, a lot more than the average Japanese like myself. I sometimes get the urge to yell at him, “Don’t give it a damn, idiot! Just think about yourself!” But I guess that’s how he is and probably a reason why we love him so much. We can’t control the other side, and Yuzu can handle other fans’ cheering. Remember the time when he shut them down with a 3A when Javi fans kept cheering before Yuzu’s performance at Barcelona? And how animatedly he talked about it? But then, he hushed his fans when they did it. So I hope we can be sensibly creative and root for him in a positive and charming way. Make him proud of his fans.

Many fans think there are some messages for his fans in this part of the interview. Yuzu never criticizes his fans, but he seems to suggest some things in a very roundabout way. I sometimes wish he told his fans directly, but I guess it’s not his style. There was this old group interview of Yuzu, Keiji and Ryuju when they were teenagers. They talked about how they met. Keiji and Ryuju met Yuzu at Nobeyama camp. Keiji recalled that Yuzu was the first person who talked to him there. Yuzu casually talked to him and introduced himself. Keiji was somewhat taken aback because kids that age are generally shy with strangers, and Keiji was relatively reserved. Keiji and Ryuju said Yuzu hadn’t changed since then, his same friendly self. That’s how people see him. In Toronto, maybe it was a little different. Language and cultural barriers for one thing, and it was a transfer after 3.11 with a lot of things going on. But every time I hear something about his reserved personality, I don’t know, it just doesn’t sit well with me. So, I really appreciate it when you explain some of the cultural stuff so properly.

I actually left a comment against it too. It’s not really about the wording or bad memories or antis. It just feels inappropriate. Skaters don’t need any distractions at their competitions. If most Japanese fans feel that way, I think he, with his honorable samurai spirit, would feel the same. The country banner idea, on the other hand, is so lovely. I hope we can send him only positive vibes at the competition venues.

I found it endearing that Yuzu's speech here sounds a little awkward I think I can relate to that. Speaking in a foreign language can make you nervous, but trying to speak respectfully with a non-native speaker in a public setting can also knock you off balance. (Even though the interviewer’s Japanese is every bit correct and professional.)

I’m all for new programs, but I can’t imagine him leaving the tribute pieces incomplete. He never skated Origin completely clean this season, let alone incorporated the iconic Biellmann. Also, if he takes on a huge task of adding new quads, it would be much easier with a familiar program. I’d rather have Origin for FP, if it makes the challenge a little less taxing. He might go for a new SP, though. I wish for a new SP and EX, hopefully something upbeat and danceable for a change. P.S. Thanks so such, admins, for keeping this planet going!

I agree with everything you said. I’ve always appreciated your comments on this forum. You are so level-headed and well versed in what is going on. Watching the interview with Shuzo-san, I think most fans in Japan were so proud of him and happy for him (and of course, worried for his health too) because he looked so excited saying he’d been freed from the burden of being the front runner and found new motivation to keep competing. He said it’s like going back to his younger self who was chasing Patrick. As for 4Lz, 4F and 4A thing, he seems to have put 4A on the back-burner for now. 4A had been his only motivation to keep competing, one last dream to accomplish, but now it is a tool to win. He wants 4Lz and 4F because they are better weapons for the purpose – less affected by ice conditions, less risky, and enough value. Except, we all worry that they will be hard on his right foot. It made me determined to support him no matter what happens in the future. I just pray that the skating god protects him from another injury.
