It's official now. No international audiences for the Olympics. That's what I had expected, but still... Now it's certain that I won't be able to see Yuzu at the Olympics. I just hope that he'll have a great season and a great Olympics, enjoy his performances and competitions and achieve all of his goals and dreams. And of course, most importantly, I hope that he stays healthy and happy!

I wanted to go to the Olympics and see Yuzu skate there so badly! But I'm afraid it's not gonna happen. As the situation looks now, I don't think international audiences will be allowed during the Olympics. Regarding the World Championships, I decided to not buy tickets because it's far from certain that Yuzu will participate. And I'd really rather spend this amount of money only when I know I'll get to see Yuzu.

This might've been already posted since it's an older post, but it's the first time I've come across it. My mind is absolutely blown. The number of mind-blowing coincidences in Yuzu's life and career is absolutely insane. Perhaps Yuzu already started to calculate everything before he was even born.

This is immediately what I thought when I saw this news. Many, many more people from all over the world will be involved and the competitions will take place in different venues and locations during the Olympics. It would be unreasonable to quarantine all the athletes for weeks before the comps. It's not looking good for the Olympics. At the very least, I think it's quite certain that no audiences will be allowed. I wouldn't be surprised if the Beijing Olympics would also be postponed.

True, the situation is changing all the time, depending of how many cases there are, where the clusters occur etc. So, it's really quite unpredictable. I think the Beijing quarantine was the strictest a month or two ago because of the 100-year anniversary of the CCP celebrations. Either way, it doesn't look like an audience, especially an international audience, will be allowed. So, my dream of seeing Yuzu skating in Beijing will probably not come true. I believe he should be vaccinated by now, so at least that's one worry less. I just hope that after this whole pandemic is over, I will still get to see Yuzu skate in real life.

This is really a bad schedule and a disadvantage for any man who skates the free in the team event. I hope they will change it. To be honest, as the Covid situation is right now in the world, I wonder if the winter Olympics will even take place as planned. Cases are on the rise in China too and many live events with audiences got cancelled these days, some places are under lockdown again etc. As far as I know, at present, all people traveling into China from outside the country have to quarantine for 4 weeks in a quarantine hotel. Even within China, people entering Beijing from any other place in the country have to quarantine for 3 weeks. Who knows how the situation will develop, but the Olympics are supposed to be in only 6 months. (Holy shit, how did that happen?!? Where has the time gone?!? Pyeongchang feels like it was only last month! ) Considering all this, it's hard for me to imagine that they will allow thousands of foreign athletes to travel into the country for the games. Making all the athletes quarantine for multiple weeks would obviously be out of the question. Even if the games do take place as planned, I think they will probably happen without an audience or with only a limited local audience. To think that I had planned to get tickets for figure skating and watch Yuzu live at the Olympics (just like I had planned to see Yuzu live at the GPF 2020 in Beijing)... Now it really doesn't look like this could happen...

I don't have any links. I just remember reading somewhere that Yuzu was voted the most popular winter sports athlete in China. It's sad that there are some people who don't have anything better to do than spread hate to people they don't even know in person just because they are from a certain country or other ridiculous "reasons". Unfortunately, those are usually the voices that scream the loudest and draw the most attention. And the media do what they have to in order to stay in business: create drama and report about negative things because it is negativity that catches people's attention. Not to mention that they also have their prejudices as well as their own narratives to uphold. That said, it's a fact that Yuzu is indeed very popular in China. I remember commentators from Chinese state TV gushing over Yuzu and his skating. And when Yuzu got his People's Honor Award, Chinese state TV even reported about it. And then there are his many fans who love and support him no matter what. There are many people in China as well as elsewhere who know about Yuzu's popularity in China regardless of where he comes from. That's why Citizen hired Yuzu as its brand ambassador for China specifically and Kose has also definitely increased its sales substantially in China after hiring Yuzu as its face.

Regarding the apparent surge of interest in Yuzu because of the Olympics, I'm really wondering how many more views the videos of his performances would have if YouTube were actually available in China. Yuzu is super popular in China even though figure skating is not that popular. So, in China, Yuzu is definitely popular way beyond the sport. As far as I remember, in polls he was even voted the most popular winter athlete in China. Especially considering the historical issues between China and Japan, Yuzu's popularity in China is more than remarkable. I posted about how searches for Yuzu sky rocketed and he became a top ten hot topic on Weibo when the Olympic games started here: One also has to take into consideration that when it comes to Google searches, Twitter trends etc., Yuzu's popularity in China doesn't even show up because these platforms - just like YouTube - are not available there.

Until the Olympics, the US media, US fed and ISU will definitely continue to hype Nathan as the next Olympic champion even more than before. In the last few years, they've been constantly building the narrative of Nathan being the new dominating man in figure skating, unbeatable, blah, blah, blah... while at the same time diminishing Yuzu and his achievements, presenting him as the "has been" as well as more or less ignoring other good skaters. I think international media will probably focus on the "rivalry" aspect between Yuzu and Nathan since the media always love drama and rivalries. Some of them might tend to see Nathan as the favorite to win because he's younger and has been winning the big competitions in the last few years. I believe these scenarios could actually work in favor of Yuzu. Whenever he was asked about the Beijing Olympics in the last couple of years, Yuzu has always stated clearly that his goal is to land the 4A. He never said once that he dreams of winning his third Olympic gold medal or speculated about that in any way. I think he's so smart to do this. By doing this, he deflected the pressure away from himself and could focus on his own goals and do his own thing. Besides, he's already won two Olympic gold medals. He has absolutely nothing to prove. I do believe that one of the main reasons why he started to focus on his own goals rather than winning competitions is of course the absolute unfair scoring he has had to suffer in the last couple of years. But as it is often the case in life, this might actually be a blessing in disguise. The pressure is definitely on Nathan to deliver and win the gold medal in Beijing. For the US media, US fed and the ISU, he's not only the favorite, he's simply expected to win. They've worked hard to roll out the red carpet for him the last couple of years. They expect him to walk in and claim the gold medal for them. But fact is, there is still half a year to go until the Olympics. And who knows what might happen until then. Who knows if the Olympics will even take place then considering the Covid 19 situation in the world right now. And even if everything goes ahead as planned, there will still be a competition. Nathan will still have to deliver. And just because the narrative around him is about him basically being the certain champion, him being unbeatable and him being able to deliver when it counts, he will have to deliver under enormous pressure. In his last big comps it might have looked like he was able to withstand the pressure. But the fact that he did win the last big comps actually even adds to the pressure on him. And the Olympics are always a different beast. This is when the world outside of this small figure skating circle actually realizes there is such a thing. Everything is extremely magnified. That means even more pressure, even more scrutiny and even more at stake. When it comes to Yuzu, he has diverted a lot of pressure from himself because he's focusing on his own goal of attaining the 4A. He has nothing left to prove, not to himself and certainly not to the world. Who knows, not being seen as the number one favorite by the media and such might actually give him more space to show his best skating and performances yet.

I totally agree! Yuzu touches the hearts and souls of people with his skating and his performances because he puts his own heart and soul into them. The same is also true for other skaters and performers and people who create some form of art in general. No matter if it's figure skating, writing, music or art, it's always the pieces that are made with the creators putting their whole authentic self inside that make an impact on people. I have never liked Nathan's skating and found it to be boring and uninspired. I thought that he'd become more expressive and interesting with time, but that didn't happen. Instead, his skating and performances seemed to become even more formulaic and superficial with time. It always looked like he just did the bare minimum to achieve his wins and that's it. He just never seemed to be authentic. He never seemed to put his whole self into the game and skate from his heart. It's like he's always wearing a mask and afraid to show and express himself. There's nothing wrong with introducing fresh, new styles, programs and music into a traditional sport. It's actually a good thing. It's always good to have skaters with different styles and more variety. But the people who enjoy ice hockey will keep on watching ice hockey no matter how much Nathan and his friends try to "toughen up" figure skating and make it more "manly". And the people who like and enjoy figure skating are fans because they are fans of the sport, despite the issues and problems it has. If they'd want to watch a sport that's more like ice hockey, they'd watch ice hockey. Having heard those words from Nathan, I also think it's pretty sad that he doesn't seem to love figure skating as what it is in its most ideal form, namely the perfect symbiosis of art and athleticism, male and female, strength and beauty, power and elegance, technical skills and artistic expression. That's why I love figure skating so much and why I've been watching and enjoying it since I was a young kid. Yuzu is the one who checks all of these boxes and has merged all of the complex and rich facets of this sport to formerly unimaginable heights and levels of perfection, creating masterpieces that go beyond anything else before in their magnificence. That's why figure skating fans love and appreciate him so much. On top of that, Yuzu is so authentic and expressive that he creates performances and programs that touch people deeply. He's also his authentic self off the ice during interviews and other appearances. Despite him only letting the public know few personal facts about himself, he comes across as sincere, real and very lovable. Therefore, he has become such a beloved icon and super star all over the world. People feel it when a person is authentic and sincere. They might not be able to explain it, but they can feel it. I didn't think that I could possibly love and appreciate Yuzu more, but again and again I find more reasons to adore him, not just as a skater but as the absolutely wonderful person he is. He is truly a gift to this world.
