they try to get skaters from as many different parts of the world as possible. the italian pair and keegan finished lower than she did and they were still invited. also didn't she get a medal/good placement at europeans this year?

yeah she did well at euros and got some generous scores here, judges clearly setting her up as the top non-Russian european women's skater

The people doing lights for this gala are insane.

I'm guessing you would need a special rigging for this, but I wish we could have it for more galas..

I heard Zhang Yimou was involved in designing the gala too, so I think this might be very out of range of the typical budget 😅

The baby pairs were good! Nice to see there will be someone to pass the torch to.

  3. I was curious to see where the points to go over T/M came from since at end of the day 3S<< is still a pretty significant error points-wise and T/M actually got higher PCS. The quad twist is an obvious one, but it's not enough to make up for the error because the difference between how much S/H got and how much T/M got on their triple twist is only 1.42. Almost as big of a contributor is the forward outside death spiral, which earned them 1.33 more points than T/M got on their forward inside death spiral (0.9 from BV, rest from GOE). Then there's a bunch of small GOE differences that add up. So they basically won because of two harder elements + execution difference.

Wait, so Sui/Han won pcs overall but T/M beat them in specifically performance and interpretation???

no actually T/M won PCS overall

I agree, I think this may be it. Looking at the medal count for China in summer Olys (they were second to US) and now in Beijing they are not doing bad as well, it shows they are very good in developing structure for the Oly athletes. I expect FS will be next on the line, as soon as they get the structure in place. It's just baffling, since they already have such great pairs for a long while and men are doing reasonably well too. Why not ladies? So strange. One would think putting in place similar system to Russia would not be an issue in China (without the unhealthy culture though, one can hope).

They probably make most of the promising young women do pairs. Honestly, given the state of the women's discipline, I feel like they should keep doing that. They'll have a longer and healthier career

I wouldn't say men are doing that well. There was Boyang, but afaik there's no one really coming up in juniors to replace him.

On the question why figure skating isn't more popular in China... well, if people see this kind of BS like in these Olympics, namely a doping scandal, abuse of minors, unfair and biased scoring and judging, preferential treatment for Russians and Americans, etc., then this will certainly not motivate people to watch more figure skating or let their children do it.

I think the main issue is that most of the country doesn't have access to an ice rink. Those only exist in big cities or up north.

Figure skating has gotten a lot more popular with Yuzu though. I wonder if it'll lead to a stronger crop of skaters in the singles disciplines a decade or so down the line
