2018-19 Thoughts on skating, programs, and skaters!
eagle replied to hoodie axel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
On Kolyada, he has already been seeing a sports psychologist for some time. The past season, it isnt so much his mental block but his sinus condition that limited his performance. Comments on Kolyada are harsher from the Russians, including TAT. There are comments from his fans that it would be better if Kolyada switch coach cos his coach dont really have experience dealing with elite skaters. For some reason it is said he doesn't get along with Mishin or something, so Kolyada wouldnt switch to Mishin. Going to US to train under Rafael is not possible unless some generous sponsor agrees to sponsor his training. Kolyada is not OG silver medalist like Evgenia who can get more sponsors & invites to ice shows. -

Shoma, if you're going be coachless, might as well ask one or more of your decorated senpais to coach you temporarily. There's Arakawa,Takahashi, Mao. And a host of less decorated ones. Even Mura, doesnt Mura's father coach? I can imagine them being appalled at the idea of Shoma training alone . -

1) Eteri shouted/raised her voice at Zagitova during Europeans practice session, the 2019 one. In public, in full view of everyone, Zagitova was crying. By now, I dunno if the youtube video is still available but a lot of fans knew abt this incident. 2) Shoma's ankle injury problems started to come to head during 2018 WC. Shoma is not one to back down, withdraw, etc. Pretty much following after Yuzu. Eteri tends to push her athletes to the limit. I forgot the name of the skater, there was a Russian male singles skater whom Eteri forced to skate with back injury. That skater had to retire before turning 20. For Eteri, results matter the most. All of this is not good for Shoma's physical & mental health. Not at his age. Yuzu needed Orser to tell them to slow down & not hurt himself - and Yuzu still overtrain anyway. If it was Eteri, Yuzu would have broken his ankle before ever winning his 1st OG Gold. Mental - Shoma needs to be learn how to rise up from being Mr 2nd place to be champion. Under Eteri & her shouting, it will not happen. She will just move on to the next up & coming youngster who can win titles. Which was what happened to Yulia & would have happened to Evgenia if she didnt leave. These 2 factors plus the fact - over the years Eteri has not had success with male skaters or experience in handling older skaters are minus points. If Shoma wants to train in Russia Mishin would be better choice. Even new coach Plushenko is better. Mishin having trained male OG champs,Plushenko having been an OG champ himself knows what it takes. -
USFS would not allow it. They surely would want Nathan at Skate America.

? I mean Eteri's camp ended on 21 July last year(according to Russian fans). So if its similar schedule, Shoma will stay till it ends, he doesnt have to leave in the middle of it. -

I think Eteri's camp would have ended before The Ice. -

Yeah, my reason no 1 is the main reason. Shoma has been with his coach since he was 5, so, he needs a change of scene, he knows it. The comparison is made with Jason cos Jason left his long time coach & has stated the differences between his previous training situation to TCC. As far as I know, Shoma is top senior male skater at his rink(similar to Jason previously), I have only seen Mihoko sensei at the boards with a young female skater. On Nathan's side, Brezina is also training under Rafael. He can do 2 different quads if I remember correctly. Then of course in-coming is Gogolev. Though I think it's unlikely Nathan's camp & USFS will agree to a direct rival for 2022 OG gold coming in. Yuzu & Javi were actual rivals at the same rink. They were taking turns winning WC, 2014 to 2017. It doesnt work for everybody but it can work. Added : Shoma has announced his choreographers for next season :- SP= Shae LB. LP=David Wilson So, it looks closer to a Canada coach, not necessarily TCC. -

Because : 1) Shoma himself said so. He wants to train alongside other top skaters. 2) He has stagnated, his jumps has been giving him problems. Yuzu wanted to train with Javi cos of the 4S. Nothing beats watching someone else do it everyday. Jason Brown has said that too - watching the other guys at TCC do quads gives him extra motivation that he can do it . Nathan says he misses training with the rest of his rink mates. Training alone at Yale is ...lonely. -

Oh boy, if you want detailed info on Shoma, 'yawningshoma' is the best person to follow on twitter. 'Yawningshoma' is a very big Shoma fan. Yes, Shoma's bro Itsuki wrote a book abt him & Shoma. Itsuki it seems gives a lot insight into Shoma's life, ie spill the beans. I think Itsuki has followed Shoma before overseas, during off season. Forgot what event. Within Japan, from the pics, Itsuki goes along to most of the ice shows. The last I read the Uno bros moved to another apartment cos their family home was full of fan gifts for Shoma. They still go home for meals, at least dinner. Hmm, Itsuki's room sometimes becomes drying room for Shoma's competitive costumes. Shoma's mother is the one who put some of the sparkles on Shoma's costumes, clean it, etc. Shoma's hair is always so stylish cos his mother was ex hairdresser. All these tidbits are known cos : Itsuki spilled the beans on their private life. Lol. -

If Shoma's manager agrees to go with then no problem. His manager can speak English. There's also demi san, Shoma's trainer/physio. Though I'm not sure if Demi san speaks English. -

I was thinking Mao Asada's Japanese coach, the one who reworked her jumps. Its not so much finding top coach for male skaters, its finding a jump specialist. -

Last year, Boyang Jin was supposed to go over to TCC. Boyang was 4th at 2018 OG. Jason Brown was the late addition. Shoma could be Boyang's replacement. Plus this coming season Gogolev has left TCC to train under Rafael. -

I read that Shoma went to Mao Asada's ice show few days ago. One other person who hasnt been discussed is Mao's ex coach, the one who re-tool her jumps. We keep thinking its non japanese coach, for all we know Shoma's just changing coaches within Japan. -

I consider Orser more likely than Rafael cos of where Yuzu is in his career. Yuzu already achieved his goal of 2 OG golds. With his ankle condition, we dont know how long Yuzu can compete. Shoma's success is Japan's success. While Shoma would be in direct competition to Nathan for OG 2022. The likelihood is same as Yuzu going to Patrick Chan's US coach back in 2012.
