Exactly. No-one should be bothered, even if Yuzu never makes that stupid list. (Ooh, look, you can underline here.) It's so funny that anyone was even surprised about Adam getting on the list. I just sighed and rolled my eyes.
-
Hmm... good point. American media comes off shallow -- but even more so when they're talking about Americans. I think that's why I love Max so dearly, he educates the public.
-
That TIME list isn't about achievement, it's about influence, and it has always been controversial because it's very PC (Politically Correct.) Adam is this year's token gay activist. There's also always a token black activist, a token Muslim, etc. And Yuzu won't appear on the list until he's had more influence outside of skating. His recovery efforts in Myagi Prefecture are a good start. He may eventually become their token Asian. Very sad -- just ignore it.

If USA broadcasters talk about Nathan like he's a god, then they talk about Yuzu like he's the God of all Gods - Zeus. PLUS, and this is very important: Figure Skating has been dying in the USA. Japanese skaters have so much support, they don't even need the hype, whereas skaters in the USA are constantly having to give up their sport because there is so little interest here now. They NEED the extra coverage just to make ends meet. To wish that Nathan got less coverage is basically wishing that he would lose his career. And what are all of YOU watching, anyway? Please show me any USA media bashing Yuzu, I'm honestly curious. It feels like I'm missing something when I hear all this bit about how the US doesn't appreciate Yuzu.
-
I wouldn't call The Olympic Channel, NBC, CBS, Universal etc. "niche" stations. Okay, next time I see America-bashing, I will point it out.
-
If you don't see the hate, you haven't been on Twitter, FB, or Instagram. It's really vicious sometimes and I just wish it would stop. Why do we have to be judgemental toward people who will never, COULD never be equal to Yuzu. I think we should be as indulgent as Yuzu. I mean the darling little boys are doing their best. It's really like Shoma won Gold, Javi silver ,and Boyang won bronze; while Yuzu created a new level -- let's call it platinum. There should be a "Yuzu medal" just for the GOAT.
-
Scott said this during the Olympic Channel broadcast. I think they called the show "Ice Talk" or something like that. It was a show before every ice rink event. I DVR'd it and watched this over and over on my TV, but I don't know if there's a Youtube clip, and I can't link you to my DVR. Maybe it's available on-demand where you live???

I think I must have seen more US commentary than you. I wonder how you could have missed Johnny saying "there's a reason we call him our king." I also don't know how you missed someone asking Scott if he was the goat and him saying he might be. Listen to all the commentaries. They gush. And why should I "tone it down" if the constant America-bashers don't have to tone it down too. It's constant and insulting. Over and over again, I have to listen to hate being poured on people who LOVE Yuzu, just because they ALSO love Nathan, etc. I've ignored it, and ignored it, but after awhile, it wears me down. STOP WITH ALL THE FREAKING HATE! This shouldn't be a place to share hatred. There's just too much of that in the world. PLEASE, everyone, PLEASE can't we just love Yuzu together without hating on anyone else?!

Okay, now you're touching on another craziness of many Fanyus. The western media is head-over-heels in love with Yuzu. Commentators on EVERY SINGLE Western station have called him the GOAT. Whenever he skates, the likes of Scott Hamilton, Tara Lapinski, Johnny Weir ("there's a reason we call him our king",) Dick Button, Kurt Browning, Robin Cousins -- the list goes on and on -- all practically shout for joy every time Yuzu skates. That's across the board: USA, Canada, UK, Europe, EVERYONE. I have listened to commentary from ALL the English speaking channels. I've read many articles from many papers. The biggest Newspaper in the USA -- the New York Times -- even did a positively gushing article about Yuzu that was read by FS fans all across the land. There is absolutely no basis in reality for these complaints. Unless the complaint is that they ALSO hype USA skaters??? Seriously? The Japanese media hypes (supports) all their skaters -- BECAUSE THEY SHOULD! The media in every country SHOULD highlight the skaters from their own country. The fact that Yuzu gets hyped AT ALL in the USA is amazing. Does the Japanese media spend more time talking about Nathan Chen then the USA media talks about Yuzu? NO! Patriotic loyalty is okay in my book. Every skater, in every country is constantly in need of support so they can continue with their career. The media helps by raising awareness, so they interview local skaters to raise awareness, which, in turn, helps the skaters raise money and get endorsements. It is the freaking RESPONSIBILITY of local media to support local athletes. Please explain why it's okay that Japanese media highlights Japanese skaters more than American skaters, but it's not okay for American media to highlight American skaters more (while still firmly acknowledging that Yuzu is the GOAT.)

Nathan Chen has always been a nice kid. Yuzu likes him for a good reason; and I wish all Fanyus would stop thinking you have to hate Yuzu's competitors in order to love him. I am 100% positive Yuzu wouldn't approve of that. We can even recognize how good the competition is, while still also recognizing that no-one else is even close to Yuzu in talent. NATHAN CHEN ON YUZURU HANYU: "Looking toward next season, it appears Chen will once again face rival and 2-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, who announced last week that he hopes to compete next season. “It’s great,” said Chen on hearing the news. “I had no idea that [Hanyu] was coming back. But I was kind of expecting it anyways. I didn’t think he was going to quit that soon. He brings a lot to skating, so it’s cool for him to do that.” Chen said that he enjoys competing against Hanyu. “In any competition, you want to have all the best skaters together, competing, really doing their best, and just seeing who can come out to win that specific day. It’s always great to have him there.” He added that Hanyu’s presence helps push and motivate him. “You feel like someone is on your back all the time. Not that I’m ahead of him, by any means; it’s just nice to have that competition. It also pushes me to try harder things.” SOURCE: http://figureskatersonline.com/news/2018/04/23/nathan-chen-looks-foward-to-new-chapter-in-his-life-and-training/

I'm too much of newbie to be of any help, but everyone made good suggestions already, and I'm going to follow them and see how it goes.

AHA! Our picks might do, if you always keep it clean with just the hot topics of the day. But the title "Our Picks" makes it sound like a list of favorites, not current interests. The index page isn't obvious enough. Like most newbies, I have no idea where things are nested. You apply logic and find you're wrong. The Our Picks page makes a lot of sense, if you keep it manageable and let all the newbies know to look there. Thanks for all the hard work!

Oh, yes, now that you clarified, I agree with every word of that. That's funny. I lurked for about a year before I joined. I found this group when I first started researching the contenders for the upcoming Olympics; but I'm 55 and don't normally participate in social media, so I thought I could resist -- but who can really resist the charms of the King? And Planet Hanyu really is the single best resource for English-speaking Fanyus. The creators of this group should be very proud of themselves... Now for some Yuzu-like back-stabbing with a smile: But it's really hard to navigate sometimes. Maybe the creators can also find a way to make it easier to find the most current discussions during special events... like maybe a "Current Hot Topics" page. They could leave the forums where they are, but during special events, they could provide links back to those forums on the Hot Topics Page, then delete the list a few days after the event is over and start over next time.

First thought: Yep, it's his way of thanking Sendai and Myagi prefecture. Not just by giving his winnings to them, but by flooding the local businesses with tourist cash. Remember, in his first press conference when he came back from the Olympics, a reporter gave him a "gotcha" questioned, asking how he could justify the expense of a parade in this economy. He smirked and said, "by all means, everyone please come spend money in Sendai." I don't actually agree that TCC leaves all the public responsibilities to Yuzu. I think that's part of their service. They make their students into stars, then teach them how to handle it. I would bet my eye teeth on it. Part of the training will be in how to navigate this. Plus, they probably actively work to thwart interlopers and deceive the media to give them all some peace. They also routinely let Yuzu have film crews in to watch him practice. Remember, Brian went through the "Battle of the Brians," etc. He's been through the rumor-mill too. He has invaluable advice, and i can't believe he doesn't share that with Yuzu.

Exactly. Even if it WERE more than friendship, that's none of our business, unless they're open about it. I'm not even going to comment on this topic anymore, since I think it's absolutely obvious that EVERYONE deserves their privacy.

Actually, I believe that's the very point. I think they spoke about how any and every time famous girls take photos with him, people start gossiping and shipping and it leads to the sort of heartache in the tabloids that made him want to die. After what he said at CiONTU, I think she's trying to be supportive of him by giving people less cause for starting this crap in the first place. We don't need to know about his relationships anyway. I hope he has whatever physical relationship he wants with whomever he loves and we never hear a word about.

I love you forever.

I'd love to, but I can't find it.

What documentary are you guys talking about? I think I missed something.

So these are the only two translated bits of this book I can find. I wonder if anyone has this book? This: https://tadakixd.tumblr.com/post/158138910730/team-brian-coaching-methods and this: nd this: https://tadakixd.tumblr.com/post/158138910730/team-brian-coaching-methods

I have NEVER heard it summed up better than that!

Yeah, I'm an Export Administrator; shipping ANYTHING to Russia sucks. You have my sympathy.

I imagine Madame Tussaud's would take your order for a life-size wax statue of Yuzu. They already have the correct measurements. https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-a-wax-figure-of-yuzuru-hanyu-japanese-figure-skater-on-display-at-84067751.html

(Secretly laughing like an evil mastermind.)

Then you absolutely "don't want" to have your own custom-made standee of Yuzu printed from whichever photo you like most. Definitely DON'T go here: https://www.shindigz.com/life-size-standees/c/860
