Maybe because in Japan gay marriage is not allowed so that's why the assumptions of his partner gender come about

That and he's talked about future marriage, having a wife, etc.

He wasn't too far off by way of timing (blaming covid).  However if it's not a wife that's completely fine too. Supporting regardless!!

  2. As a fan of his for 10 years I am equal parts shocked AND thrilled for him! He has given SO much to this sport and now he can make room for another chapter in his life. After looking at that BTS dance cover of Dynamite, I guess life really is Dynamite for him right now. I'm just so happy to know that he is in a GOOD place...a VERY good place! Wishing him and the new Mrs. Hanyu nothing but the best! Makes my heart so very full.

And side note: I'm also happy for his mom. I think back to that time at Autumn Classic when I gave her my extra seat because our section was totally full.  She spent a huge part of her life being so dedicated to him and his career as well. A total MVP!! And now she can send him on his way (though I'm sure they are still really close).

Before the arrival of NC I did not know that USF had that much power in ISU. Their ladies weren't strong for a while so I thought NC wouldn't be marked for his nationality, but I think around 2019 I started to notice things that were blatantly obvious. I think what broke this prejudice for me was 2019 GPF when I clearly look back at Yuzu landing the most perfect 4Lz and 4Lo in his free and landing most of his other jumps well but still lost.

I am kind of shocked that NC is invited to all these late night talk shows all of a sudden it's like USF even has power on the US mass media, like not all gold medalists are invited to Jimmy Kimmel, but NC was. I am starting to finally realize that although figure skating is a minor sport, the power it has in US is different, and the I can tell that the US has been waiting for a men's champion for a long time, and now that they have finally got one, I can only imagine how much they will downplay Yuzu more so in the future. The more Yuzu continues skating, the more of a threat he is to their entire narrative. I think the next seasons that Yuzu continues skating will be even harder on Yuzu and on us because of this.

It's not shocking at all, it's called 15 minutes of fame. The Olympics hasn't even been over for a week lol. Adam and Mirai got invites to talk shows, Oscars, DWTS, etc.  Would have been more odd for it not to happen actually.  The true tell will be invites outside of this time, filling seats for ice shows, actually doing something to make skating relevant outside of every 4 years...

So my question is can I get clarity on if "certified" is actually a thing? I hadn't heard about it until these Olympics tbh...

  4. So I was watching a little of TSL today and Yuzu was mentioned in conjunction with Chen's 4a attempt.  According to them, they have seen the video of Nathan's attempt and while URed (4.25), it looked close (closer than Yuzu's GPF 19 attempts).  In terms of Yuzu they hear he limits his time on ice to preserve his body but think that's a good thing that athletes can last long enough to know their bodies and drive their own ship.

    It's time stamped @37 mins:

    So the race is on!

  5. I am sad but extremely relieved at the same time. I would not have been enjoying myself while be being wrought with worry that I could catch something and/or bring something back to my loved ones or colleagues. Honestly I'd been questioning if I was just going to eat the cost because the thought was making me so unhappy. Honestly I'm sure hearing about the NBA cancellations, Tom Hanks testing positive, and then flight bans from Europe would have put me over the top.  I just hated that the ISU was going to leave it up to me instead of doing the right, ethical thing. 20,000 people from all over the world rubbing elbows with e/o for up to 10 hours a day for a week during a pandemic is flirting with disaster. I would have been worried sick about the skaters too with crowds and gifts. And don't think that it wouldn't have weighed on Yuzu's mind that thousands of people would be there risking it to see him. Not to mention the well-being of his mom who usually sits in the crowd and his coaches too that are usually all around. And of course himself as an asthmatic.  Shame on the ISU for not doing it sooner.

Happy 2nd anniversary of Yuzu skating to the best free skate ever at the Olympics level and winning his second Olympic gold medal  :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

The 17th was a beautiful sunny and quite warm day in Gangneung with barely any clouds on the sky, it only started to get much colder when the sun went down and we headed to PyeongChang for the medal ceremony. I remember my fingers were freezing while we were waiting there but every second was worth it. <3

I will never forget those moments and feelings when Yuzu stepped on the podium and got his gold medal, and after that the anthem was played for him.

Mine will arrive in a week or so. I can't wait for it.

Yes! It was insane how much colder it got when you got to Pyeongchang vs. Gangneung. I remember we had to take the train to PC and then wait for the shuttles headed to medals plaza. That's where it was cooold. And then as the sun set it got even colder!!  And then traffic SUCKED trying to get us there but I remember not totally freaking out because if we were stuck in it, they were too. And the ceremony was delayed a touch because of the traffic I remember.

  7. This was a day where I learned for a fact that being in a complete state of euphoria allows you to endure things you would otherwise find torturous.  I remember heading toward the medals plaza from Gangneung Ice Arena and saying "What a glorious day!"  It wasn't that glorious, we were freezing our asses off! And it was a TREK to get from the arena to the plaza, but   @kiches, myself, and others were in full YOLO mode and just so darn happy that we did it with a smile.  I remember my fingers should have been freezing when I was trying to film the medal ceremony, but I was just too happy to feel it.  What a glorious day, indeed!!  I wish I could bottle it up and sell it!! "Natural High" come get it while it's hot!

Is this new or did I miss it before? Zuzu is on fire. Ganbatte Nippon!! :003:

He's really selling it! Makes me think he'd be an amazing coach some day. Imagine the pep talks! Sounds like he said something along the lines of  "Strongest Japan, each and everyone one of you turn the pressure into strength, everybody as one, do your best, Japan."

  9. Happy New Year!  So I'm watching the new Netflix series spinning out and I noticed the opening scene, they are totally filming at the rink for ACI in Oakville. I know that stupid hockey glass obstructing my view of Yuzu from anywhere , among other things!!:rofl3:But of course, a sectionals will never be that crowded.

Doug Haw should seriously text TSL to stop creating necessary drama about Yuzu's coaches.

Or he could stop giving them nuggets of gossip in the first place.  What does he even get out of this?

When you have a rival who never repeats both their SP and FS programs, then recycling becomes more noticeable for the judges to find an excuse for underscoring someone. Nathan never recycled any of his programs at the senior stage. Even during juniors he only recycled 1 program. That is one of his only strength and advantage he has over Yuzu. He always brings something new to the table to surprise the judges with something they have never seen before. I already said it's unfair to mark someone down for recycling, but that may be the reality of the judging system. Even Philip Hersh said he's tired of seeing Otonal again. And although he's not a judge himself, he has enough connections in the figure skating world that includes prominent judges who may feel the same way. If someone is "tired, bored" of seeing the same program again, it does affect how they score the PCS. They might mark down the performance score, composition and interpretation score. It has a chance of affecting 3/5 aspects of the PCS scoring. Everyone knows recycling a program is a disadvantage compared to someone who always tries to bring new programs to the table. New programs are brought to bring a "wow factor" to the table, to give the judges something new, fresh and unexpected. I am a Fanyu myself but if Yuzu recycles both his programs next season, then it's even more likely that the judges will be bored of it and mark his PCS down even more. As for Chopin, I think Nathan's PCS was still over-scored even then, most likely because judges were finding an excuse to over-score Nathan and one of the excuses was: Nathan never recycles, at least not on the senior circuit. I know it's not fair, but I do understand it in a way. To be honest, even though I am a huge fan of Yuzu, I get less excited about seeing Otonal this year than last year. Last year I loved it, but this year, I just was sort of bored only because I already know the choreography and music too well.

I think Yuzu might be missing the point. I think he might not realize that Nathan is beating him because of these reasons.

    1. Yes Nathan's nationality does give him a boost

    2. Yes Nathan's BV is very high

    3. And yes, it is highly likely Nathan is getting fluctuated PCS because both his programs are always new. And this is an advantage no matter how hard you try to deny it. Judges always love something new. But Yuzu does not seem to realize this.

I'm not saying Yuzu would have won if he had 2 new programs this year.

I'm saying 2 new programs would not have given the judges any excuse to mark down Yuzu's PCS just for recycling them

And even fans have limits. If Yuzu does repeat Origin and Otonal again next year, I will be disappointed, no matter how much I love Yuzu. I think he is the most artistic and musical figure skater ever, and to have him not be more versatile to show all the different sides of him with many different types of genres before he retires would be a shame and a little bit of a waste of his artistic talent. I think Yuzu's greatest strength is his genre versatility. He can express so many different types of genres in many different ways. Whereas Nathan can't (it's what I honestly think about Nathan's artistry. He has a limited versatility to express a wide variety of music genres). I think Yuzu should play with his strengths more often. He should show the judges he is a skater capable of bringing out and beautifully executing and expressing all different types of music; tango, classics, jazz, pop, ballad, rock and many more. He has to bring the discussion to the judging table that HE is the more musically gifted, and more musically versatile skater. That Yuzu is the skater that can suit a wide range of music and choreographic styles. He can't just rely on higher BV to win. To win, he has to play to not just one, but ALL his strengths and advantages over Nathan.

And that includes bringing new and exciting, never seen before fresh programs that blows the judges away.

With this sort of score manipulation, I believe he needs a masterpiece program that judges are not expecting, or have never seen something similar to.
Just like how he brought Seimei in 2015. It blew the judges away because it was something (unusual music, unusual choreo) no skater had ever tried before.

You forgot a 4th one.  Consistency.  If you keep skating relatively clean your score will keep rising (SC vs NHK's SP crap notwithstanding).  Look at Kostornaia just this season. Med past seasons, Zag in Olympic season.  Yuzu has to deliver when it matters and do it all the time. 2 clean back to back programs are now a must and as much as I love him, we have to reach back to GPF 2015 for that.  It's a tall order, but if anybody CAN ultimately do it, it's him.

So, Yuzu does not mention Alysia Liu among the teen girls quadster?

No, but I mean it's a lot to keep track of. Not like he mentioned Rika, who I'm sure he knows trains the sal, or Tursy who did it last season.

CBC had nice things to say about him as well, but Kurt (as much as I like his commentary) says things that rub me the wrong way sometimes. He'll throw in comments that make it seem like Nathan is a complete packaged skater, how a relaxed upper body justifies a lot of GOE on Nathan's jumps, how Nathan is too humble to say he is happy to win against his rival when he is at his best (although partially true, Yuzuru wasn't really at his best soooo???) I'm kinda just scared to hear what NBC said about Nathan and Yuzuru in comparison lol

    Thanks! I'll catch it later.

I don't know if this has been discussed..sorry if it has already...but what happened with the NBC broadcast. Usually there is always something said by Tara or Johnny that offends me and other fans in some way or is noteworthy or maybe even complimentary towards Yuzuru. I've seen nothing stated by them...I have heard what CBC said however...opinions/ thoughts? Was the NBC broadcast just the regular patriotic/nationalistic stuff we always hear?

They said nice things about him actually.  Before Yuzu skated Terry said we're looking at someone considered by many to be the greatest of all time.  I'll record it with my phone and post it.  On the flip side I haven't heard CBC's thoughts, ROFL.

Yes. However I noticed last year that Gabby went to an even smaller competition in Scarborough or Yorkville (which are both even closer to TCC than Oakville)... can't remember where exactly. So there are other competitions they could use for the purposes of first pancakery.

Were they worth any ranking points though?

But the reality is that in Canada and the US, the current system for skater development is something that grew organically over the past 50 - 100 years, with periodic investment from various levels of government. And in Russia, the Soviet system of training athletes the way one might recruit and train an army has shaped the system they have today. And even then, the only one of those three that reliably produces top athletes is the Russian one. And all three countries are winter countries to begin with, where most of the people go out and do things like skating for relaxation and enjoyment every day, and there's a large base of athletes to choose from.

If JSF is trying to do it from scratch according to some artificial template of success, they have their work cut out for  them and no mistake.

And infrastructure is better too than Japan with their over crowded rinks.  I'll always wonder what the potential for Satoko's jumps could have been if she was able to jump clockwise, her natural inclination.  But in Japan it was too dangerous to allow it.

I have been seeing him picking ACI for the past couple of seasons now.

I mean, you can't beat the convenience unless you decided to have the comp at TCC :rofl3:.  And Brian loves to bring the whole gang.  Easy ISU points.
