1. Quick translation of the messsage on the Notte Stellata website

‘Notte Stellata’ means ‘starry night’ in Italian.

On 3.11 2011, during the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake Disaster, Yuzuru Hanyu - who experienced the disaster in Sendai, Miyagi - headed with his family towards the evacuation shelter.

Collapsed buildings, burst water pipes… what he saw of his hometown on the way to the centre was a completely changed hometown.

In the midst of despair, he looked up at the sky.

There, shining, was a sky full of stars.

In the power outage caused by the earthquake, unobstructed by the glow of street lights, the beautiful and normally unseen stars shone brightly.

The beautiful sky of glittering stars - that felt to Hanyu like the ‘light of hope’.

The title of this show is ‘notte stellata’.

Like the starry sky that shone on the day of the disaster, he has gathered the hope that [this show] can convey hope’, and be the catalyst for even a small smile on everyone’s faces.

  2. Translation for the first teaser for Notte Stellata ;; u ;; Excited to see more about what it is.

"The stars were beautiful. On the day of the disaster: the starry night sky on 3.11."

Caption: March 11, 2011. Within the complete darkness of the blackout...

"It was completely dark, so the stars were truly beautiful. The light of hope - that was the feeling."

  3. Hello, im drawing a little on the wisdom of the crowd for a twitter thread I'm making - I remember there were some Chinese skaters with costume tributes to Yuzu this year and in the past (I seem to remember etude, Poto 1.0 and 2.0, maybe a PW?) and even a rollerskater from a few years ago but cannot for the life of me locate their names or clips. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Can you DM me here or Twitter (@axelsandwich) if you have anything? Thanks guys~ :clapclap4:

what a meanigful way to end the Kose blog:tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

I'll miss the little updates, but well, we know our favourite ninja is in his cave working hard (and hopefully doing many things he likes, like skating, listening to music and playing video games and who knwos, watching cute cats vids:tumblr_inline_mm2wnxgTbV1qz4rgp:)

    we know it is

I wonder if ISU will adjust BV again in the future or if we must be resigned that BV will stay as they are (for sequences too) till the next big rules ovehaul...hope dies last, they say:tumblr_inline_ncmifdw7151rpglid:

what I took from Kaerb's translation was roughly the same, as in:

    1) the claim that someone was asking to badmouth Yuzu AND prop 3 other skaters couldn't be verified (hence it's possible the original claim wasn't to be taken at face value, and the reason of such a claim woud then be open to any kind of speculation)

    2) on Crowdworks, most requests for content about Yuzuru "merely" wanted something written about him, likely to get views (at this point mentioning him on media is quite a good bet to get clicks)*. It's entirely possible J-cast is doing exactly the same now - trying to get those views thanks to fans reacting to the article (and with that content, fans's strong reaction was predictable)

(*I guess it's also more likely to get clicks when posting positive things rather than negative stuff. afaik, sometimes fans have tried to "boycot" trash articles, so maybe "any press is good press" isn't always true...)

Well, I'd be a bit skeptical about Yuzu fans paying for positive content about Yuzuru (he doesn't really need it and thousands of people are doing that for free anyway, everyday, everywhere), and tbh, I don't think he needs to be painted as a victim though deception, there are already so many things in his life that make people "take his side"...tho I don't claim to know the minds of the most extreme fans, one can't deny extreme fans do exist in every fandom. On the other side, I find believable that people would want to have Yuzu content posted on their own websites, not on twitter or other platforms where they can't monetize on the views...

(as for antis jumping in to claim evil fanyus are the masterminds behind everything, well, I'm not surprised and tbh only a very naive evil mastermind wouldn't have forseen it. Making a claim that can't be supported with some kind of evidence is 100% sure to backfire badly)

what is the name of the company exactly, Crowdworks or Cloudworks? I'm confused also because of the legal name of the first company :14066882: googletranslating the sites, I think it's the first, like in MoriaPolonius's post

Oh oops, belated clarification. It must be Crowdworks if that's the registered name. I'm not technically wrong I think because クラウド is also romanised as 'Cloud' (eg. Cloud Strife's name) but I should have checked. My apologies!

  5. and with that, yuzu's daily blog posts come to an end and he retreats back into hermit cave. aww. given his history with social media, this was honestly the most sustained social media updates we've ever received so good effort :68468287:

for completion's sake and easy reading, I compiled my translations into a twitter moment if anyone wants it

  6. our podcast team got to interview brian before worlds (as well as tracy which we released a few weeks ago) and he talks a bit about yuzu~ just a bit more content to hopefully brighten your day a bit

  7. Hey guys - if any international fan brought a yuzu banner to any competition this year or in previous years and has some photos of it, could they kindly send me a DM here or on twitter (@axelsandwich)? Looking for people who want to contribute to something (will explain further in a DM)

  9.

I'm really touched, this program interviewed one of Yuzu's ex classmates from 3rd year of middle school (Google translate is saying his name is Masanori Asano but sometimes it can be read differently so if any JPN speakers want to correct me, please do!). Yuzu's mentioned previously that he really loved his classmates from that class. I'm just going to cover the parts of middle school to give a rough gist of what was said.

Footage of Yuzu in middle school around 2:20

Classmate: I hope he will go to the Olympics and win

Asano: Who are you making your goal as you keep doing your activities?

Yuzuru: Without forgetting this class (Year 3 Class 4) and how everyone cheered for and supported me, I will work hard

Asano: Ah yes, a good comment, thank you very much, thank you

    (9yrs later...)

Asano had been in the same primary and middle school as Yuzu for 6 years.

Q: How did he become good friends with Yuzuru?

Asano: The first person I spoke to when I entered middle school was Yuzuru-kun. I was sitting by myself (somewhat isolated) at the end there and then he spoke to me. Fundamentally, he's a good person. He loved baseball so we played catchball in the schoolyard. He jumped too, in the classroom. He often said stuff like, 'I can't rotate so much on land but I can rotate more on the ice', like 'I'm not just this y'know!' (T/N: sort of in the spirit of 'don't underestimate me!')

Yuzu won in the 2010 Junior World Championships in March and returned to Sendai in April.

Yuzu at the airport: Now that I've returned to my hometown of Sendai, the feeling of reality is hugely hitting me/overflowing.

But in truth he had missed his graduation ceremony to make Junior Worlds.

Q: Hanyu-senshuu didn't attend his graduation ceremony right?

Asano: No he didn't. On a separate day, he had his own graduation ceremony... perhaps you could say a ceremony just for him. About 10-15 remaining students and classmates (his own age) were there. After the ceremony, we went back to the classroom and spoke about various things and took photos, and he wrote 'niku' (meat) on my forehead.

Yuzu also gave him an autograph (his junior autograph with the mushroom fhskjfs) - and on the top he wrote 'I'm going to get a gold medal at the Olympics!'

Asano: If I'm not wrong, at the time, it had been decided the Olympics was going to be in Sochi? He said something about getting a gold medal at this Olympics Games with an unfamiliar name I'd never heard of...... and he really frikkin got it huh (t/n: he doesn't strictly say 'frikkin' but I wanted to convey...the amused incredulity LOL)

Q: What hopes does he have for Yuzuru?

Asano: During his schooldays, I thought he always always just did skating. I hope he will treasure the times when he's not skating and take care with injuries. Rather than saying 'gold medal, gold medal', I'd like him to take care of his body. Yeah I want to see him. Like we did back then, I want to joke around together again.

    ; u ; I hope they'll get the chance to meet ;;;;

Wasn't media silence last year partly olympic strategy to keep people guessing about his condition? Stakes aren't as high this year so TCC may have gotten more relaxed about it.

Anyway, I'm not sure it's worth worrying so much about the reactions of haters. Those kind of people will spin anything into something negative. If you don't give them anything to latch on to, they'll just invent something out of thin air. At some point, it's just not worth caring about how they think.

If the video is recent, it's great to see him back on ice, since it must mean the injury wasn't as serious as we might have feared and recovery is going well :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

    Spoiler

I have no idea if it was an Olympic-only condition or just a 'protect TCC skaters' measure, I always thought it was more the latter. I hope they got permission/awareness from the skaters to film, that's the main thing.

  12. Perhaps unpopular opinion about the TCC video but...

    Spoiler

As happy as I am about seeing Yuzu as anyone, does TCC not have a social media ban anymore? I'm fairly sure the shot of yuzu was accidental on the uploader's part since she was not even focusing on him and while I've hardly been an exception to the 'spot yuzu as blur in background of TCC training video' joke, I'm a hesitant about sharing this particular video on public platforms. It seems like one that was taken w/o his awareness or permission during injury recovery period, and especially given the anti narrative of 'oh he's faking/downplaying his injury to get out of JNats' is high and how much of a media silence there was last year...

Some wishful thinking there, making Yuzu front and center. Also, did Daisuke qualify for Nats? I've lost track.

Yes, Dai qualified by winning the KinKi Regionals.

Apparently the Kikuchi-san officially retiring thing was published in a publication that was also responsible for some not-so-nice gossip about Yuzuru (though I haven't seen it in print nor can I find it on their website, only screencaps of the words themselves shared privately). JFans don't really want to give the publication clicks which is why the news isn't spreading around Twitter. I haven't seen it substantiated by any other source, though I don't actually doubt the fact he's retired (it would explain his absence this season). But just letting people know it hasn't been 'officially' announced by any other news source.

As I'm a petty fanyu, I prefer not giving them my clicks. If there is anything outrageous or interesting, it will usually leak to twitter anyway so I'll just roll my eyes at their nonsense or side-eye them...

Probably my laziness and general weariness to hone my english listening skills through podcasts(*) have protected me form falling their prey  when I was learning I dived on everything written, I found forums and then blogs and only watched a few T*L interviews bacause Yuzu

It's a pity tho, they did some very nice interviews with TCC coaches and choreographers..I remember DW, Tracy...but, me being a petty fanyu, since when I learned that the T*L team wasn't nice at all, I click once, I pause, I download and I don't need to give them views when I want to rewatch the content I'm interested in (like interviews to TCC team).

I find particularly bad that T*L use Yuzuru's name and thumbnails to promote their videos. It's shameless exploitation of both Yuzuru and his fandom and it makes me aven a pettier towards them:dancingpooh:

Also, to people who need weekly recaps on FS, there are the InTheLoop weekly podcasts. Sure, there are still lots of opinions and one can agree or disagree, but it's fun (and no mean comments). I also like that there are so many voices :tumblr_inline_n2pjd3guzE1qdlkyg:

*LOL I even went for english transcripts of podcasts in my own language, it's just much less time consuming and you can more easily find what you're searching for... so thank you InTheLoop crew for the transcripts @kaerb :thanks:

Aw thank you! I'm glad the transcripts help, we really work hard on them and transcribe from scratch but I personally think it pays off because I also prefer reading to listening most days. I'm hoping that we can cover some wider, themed topics once competition wraps up too. We also have a more general news roundup in case anyone has trouble keeping up with the FS world (it's mostly for me because...I have trouble keeping up with the FS world)

Since we're on this topic of commentary, I just want to say I wish commentators can praise/comment more on the program components in skaters' programs. In the past when I started watching figure skating because of Yuzu, I loved watching his programs with commentaries especially from B.ESP, CBC, and NBC because they would literally praise Yuzu to the high heavens when he skated clean. But then over time, I've realized there's more to his skating than just those praises. I still like watching with commentary sometimes because it's nice to have others praise him when he skates well. But I also began to realize how sometimes commentary can take away the beauty of his skating when they're being redundant. Also, these mere praises often surround his technical excellence or world records/titles. I wish they can talk more about what makes Yuzu's programs/japanese ladies' so great other than just commenting on his jumps when he executed them flawlessly. Yes, they sometimes talk about how he's a total package but like explain it, go in depth on it. Talk about the speed or positions of their spins, talk about the choreo/composition, the transitions, their turns, their footworks, their interpretation of the music/facial expression, their skating skills, their ice coverage...I wish they'd talk more about this so viewers can learn. Because essentially, I find PCs and TES are codependent in making a program great and balance. That's why we love commentators like Charlie White and Max/Angelo who pretty much dissect the program more accurately and show true appreciation for what the skaters do on the ice. I learn way more over a short span of time listening to their analyses than from all the vague superlatives other commentators say like "beautiful" "the best skater ever". Yes, those are nice to hear when referring to Yuzu as an artist, but talk more about his program itself when he's skating to it.

A really really acute and salient point about commentary - I think being able to go in depth by naming specific transitions or elements also reflects a deeper technical understanding of the sport and I definitely prefer it to yet another comment about the Pooh rain - which incidentally never offers much new beyond 'oh wow that's a lot of Poohs' like...yes, very insightful........

You may also enjoy Max and Angelo's podcast series - generously translated by fans - where they really go in depth about skating technicals and discuss a bunch of topics. I don't take their word as absolute law but I appreciate that they 'show their working out', so to speak, so that they are transparent about how they got to their conclusions and leave room for people to challenge or contradict them.

  16. omg my people

My photos from ACI and Milan are here and here respectively - I shoot with a Canon 5D Mk 2 as an advanced amateur (I've shot paid weddings/fashion/portrait shoots). Biggest challenge with sports photography is...lenses. I shot all the competitions with a 24-105mm but I could see how huge of a difference a 200mm/300mm made to just the sheer range of shots people could get...and was so jealous ; u ; (whether I want to drop $$$ on buying or hiring one for an uncertain number of competitions is another thing...). I also shot video but decided to go with manual focus rather than try and figure out my autotracking. I didn't really want to spend my whole time looking at Yuzu and other skaters through my camera screen though, which is why my videos and fancams ended up being quite scattered and short -- I'll leave HQ fancams to the professionals (I prefer photos anyway).

Workflow-wise, my friends used a CF card reader for their phones to great effect - good for people trying to edit live! https://www.ebay.com.au/p/3in1-Lightning-to-SD-CF-TF-Card-Camera-Reader-Adapter-for-iPhone-X-8-iPad-Ios11/28021355125?iid=153095105526&chn=ps

Even moreso than CF cards (my 64GB was enough to last me a whole day shooting full RAW and some video though I had to backup and format my card every day), spare batteries are the things to invest in. I'm lucky I had one - it meant I could shoot without fear.

    Here's a thread of my photos ( :

Yes the problem here is right of publicity. I'm not well versed on this topic, but exploiting a person's likeliness and name for commercial gain without their consent is very likely illegal where TSL is based in, and where they are selling these merchandises to.

The skaters depicted on their merchandises are unlikely to take any legal action, so TSL is really taking advantage of knowing this as well. Their previous attitudes only add to how ironic and dispicable this entire situation is.

It certainly is a no-no but the sad reality is that even if it's technically illegal or in bad faith re: business, nothing will happen if no one brings an action against them and they're simply not going to. By virtue of #hanyuconomy, it's probably going to sell anyway but that's why I'm extremely side-eye-y about how exploitative this all feels on TSL's side, given how they've disparaged him in the past. It's unfortunate the collaboration is with someone like Aljona's husband - friends of mine have bought his limited edition yuzu prints and they're beautiful pieces but I'd much rather buy from him directly =______=
