Q: Javi, continuing with this idea of expressing on the ice, you said it was one of your strengths, also Donovan’s. And if there’s a skater with “aura,” this word that’s trending on social media now, we have to mention Yuzuru Hanyu. He was a skater who combined both things, the technical side and this aura of expression. How would you describe Yuzuru in that sense?

J: Yuzuru was a skater who, whether things were easy or difficult, he “sold”(1) them to you the same way. He was someone who could perform very simple steps, but because of the way he expressed himself, the strength of his movements, the intensity of his gaze, he “sold” them to you so well that, in the end, it was impossible to tell whether what he was doing was easy or not. Because in the end, it all came together, and you’d just say, “This is incredible!” A natural-born athlete, a natural talent, because, as you said, he combined technical difficulty with artistic difficulty extremely well.

So for me, he was one of the most complete athletes at that time, during the years he competed. The most complete! To me, he was one of the best. And it was precisely because of that, because he “sold” absolutely everything, and he “sold” it well, he “sold” it incredibly well! And he still does. I was with him in Japan just recently, and he’s still the same skater. He still “sells” it the same way—it’s incredible. That’s something you can’t teach; it’s something within a character, within an athlete, and it’s very hard to learn. That’s why I think that, besides being the most consistent skater of recent times, he was also—how can I put it?—one of the athletes who knew best how to sell what he did so that people could understand it.

Q: I like this term of “selling” in skating. You have to sell the performance with your smile, with everything. I’d never heard it put that way before.

J: Think about it, at the end of the day we’re doing a sport on an ice rink, and we’re alone. It’s such a big space, and we’re completely alone, with the judges far away and the audience far away. So the more you express, the more you “sell” what you’re doing… because a lot of times, you do a movement, and then when you see it from a distance, you realize, “That move I thought I did with strength didn’t actually look strong to the person watching from over there.”

So you have to ask yourself, “How do I make everything reach the people watching?” And that’s what I mean, Yuzuru was one of the best at that because his movements of… I don’t know, of (TN: I cannot catch this word), his powerful gestures, they reached everyone, the whole arena, every single spectator watching. And that’s something people love. And if you’re standing right in front of him, skating with him… well, there were times my legs were shaking because I thought, “I’m competing against him.” And I know , I know he is a very, very strong skater.

Q: And Javi, speaking of this idea of “selling” and also this unique kind of personalized fandom, where the support for an athlete or skater is based on what they convey, on who they are, and as we wrap up the topic of Yuzuru… but since he’s such a unique case, Donovan Carrillo also talked to us and described him as a “mystical skater.” How would you explain Yuzuru’s presence and this connection, which I think is the most unique in your sport?

J: Ah! Look, I think Yuzuru is one of the few skaters I’ve known who has always approached his athletic life as half physical, half mental—focusing on perfecting the mental aspect, concentration… I don’t even know what to call it. But a person who focused intensely on feelings, on everything that is more mental, you know? And it’s not about going to a psychologist, or having a… no, it’s something else entirely. Yuzuru was focused on a completely different kind of thing. I don’t even know how to describe it. So if the “mystical” part is the part no one knows about, then I don’t know it either, but I’ve seen glimpses of it from the outside. He’s always had that… I don’t even know what to call it. Sometimes I’d just say, “He’s like a samurai.” He is like a samurai, who could sit for four hours as if meditating, then suddenly get up—and without warming up, he was sleeping, but just like that—he’d get up and land three quadruples. It’s incomprehensible. You just can’t explain it. I think that’s the most mystical part, the part no one really knows about who Yuzuru is. And I think, in the end, he’s managed his career extremely well. Because it’s not easy to stay at the top for so many years, especially while being a hero in his country. He is a hero. The media pressure, the comments… in the end, there are other skaters, and in Japan, there’s a bit more competition between athletes and even among the fans of the athletes(2), but I think he’s handled it very well. And I think after competing, he’s also managed the transition very well… (the work) I know he’s doing now.

So if for me that was the mystical side, as Donovan says, for me, that would be this part that nobody knows that is the spiritual, mental (side)... Let’s leave it at that—something we don’t know.

Q2: Javi, I was reading an article about you two, because you’ve been friends, rivals, training partners, you both trained under Brian Orser. I read that it was a little as if Federer and Nadal trained together. Would you say that training alongside Yuzuru made you a better skater? And, vice versa, did training with you also help Yuzuru?

J: Yes, and that’s something we have always had… we have always been aware of, both Yuzuru and I. And we’ve said it, we have no problem in saying it. I think training together taught me to understand just how much you can push yourself, how hard you can work. I’d watch Yuzuru train and think, “Whoa! I need to keep training, I need to push myself more!”

There was a competition on the ice, where if he did a clean short program, a clean free skate, I wanted to do the same. No, because… it came out from inside of me to say, “He’s not going to beat me!”. “Even if it isn’t an official competition, but I will also try to do a perfect program.” And I think it was the same for him. He’s said before that one of the reasons he came to train with Brian was because I was there, because he wanted to see and learn how I jumped, isn’t it? Because, back then, those were the best jumps he had seen. And well, in the end, these were the reasons why training together worked well for both of us.

Now, does that mean training was always all peace and love? No, obviously not. In the end, we were competitors, we were training hard, we were exhausted, and we wanted to do well. And the truth is, some days it wasn’t easy to train alongside the person you’d be battling against in just a few days.

Q: Javi, siguiendo con esa línea de transmitir en la pista, vos decias que era uno de tus fuertes, también el de Donovan. Y si hay un patinador con aura, esta palabra que está de moda ahora en las redes, tenemos que caer en Yuzuru Hanyu, capaz él era un patinador que combinaba las dos cosas, la parte técnica y esta aura de transmitir. Como describís a Yuzuru en ese sentido?

 

J: Yuzuru era un patinador que fueran cosas fáciles, fueran cosas difíciles, te las vendía de la misma manera, una persona que a lo mejor te hacía unos pasos muy fáciles pero de la manera de expresar, de la manera de tener los movimientos tan fuertes que tiene, las miradas tan intensas que tiene, te los vendía tan bien que era imposible a final saber si lo que estaba haciendo era facil o no, por que al final todo se juntaba y decías “es que es una barbaridad!” Deportista nato, un talento nato, porque cómo dices juntaba muy bien la parte de dificultad técnica con la parte de dificultad artística. Entonces, para mi era uno de los deportistas más completos que existía en ese momento, en los años en el que él ha estado en la competición. Más completo! Para mi era uno de los mejores. Pero por el mero hecho de eso, por el mero hecho de que vendía absolutamente todo, y te lo vendía bien, te lo vendía súper bien! Pero lo sigue haciendo. Estuve hace súper poquito con él en Japón y sigue siendo el mismo patinador. Te lo sigue vendiendo de la misma manera, es increíble. Es una de las cosas que no se puede conseguir, va dentro de un personaje, va dentro de un deportista, y eso es muy difícil de enseñar. Por eso yo creo que además de ser el patinador más consistente de los últimos tiempos, creo que también ha sido ese, cómo llamarlo, uno de los deportistas que mejor sabía vender lo que hacía para que la gente lo entendiera.

 

Q: Me gusta este término de “vendedor” de los patinadores. Hay que vender la performance con la sonrisa, con todo. Nunca había escuchado el hecho de vender. 

 

J: Piensa que al final nosotros estamos haciendo un deporte en una pista de hielo que estamos solos. Es un espacio tan grande y estamos absolutamente solos, y los jueces están lejos y el público está lejos. Entonces, cuanto más expreses, cuanto más vendas lo que estás haciendo, porque muchas veces haces un movimiento y luego lo ves desde lejos y dices “ese movimiento que yo creía que lo había hecho fuerte, no lo he hecho fuerte para la persona que me está viendo desde allá.” 

Entonces es muchas veces el decir “¿cómo hago todo para que le llegue a las personas que le están viendo?” Y eso es lo que digo, al final el Yuzuru era de las mejores personas que hacía eso porque los movimientos de, no sé, de (¿...?), fuertes, al final esos movimientos llegan a todo el mundo, a todo el estadio, a todo el espectador que lo está viendo, y eso gusta, y si ya le tienes en frente patinando con él, ya es que yo a veces me temblaban las piernas porque digo “estoy compitiendo contra él.” Y es que sé que él es un patinador muy, muy fuerte.

Q: Y Javi, hablando de esto de “vender”, y también de este fandom personalizado, como que se apoya al atleta, al patinador por lo que transmite, por cómo es, y cerrando también el tema de Yuzuru, pero como es tan particular, Donovan Carrillo también charlamos con él y lo definía como un patinador místico. ¿De qué manera explicás esta figura de Yuzuru y esta conexión que creo que es de las más particulares de tu deporte?

 

J: Ah! Mira yo creo que Yuzuru es uno de los pocos patinadores que he conocido que ha llevado siempre su vida deportiva como mitad física y mitad mental, centrándose en la perfección mental de concentración, de… no sé ni cómo llamarlo, pero una persona que se centraba muchísimo pues en los sentimientos, en todo lo que es más mental, no? Donde, no es ir a un psicólogo, no es tener un… no, eso es otra cosa, no? Yuzuru se centraba en otra historia totalmente diferente. No sé ni cómo llamarlo, no? Por eso yo diría que si la parte mística es la parte que nadie conoce, que yo tampoco la conozco, pero si la he visto un poquito desde fuera y es uno de los patinadores que siempre ha tenido esa, esa parte de, de… no sé ni cómo llamarlo, de como si fuese de… yo a veces le digo pues “es que pare un samurai.” Parece un samurai que se puede sentar, puede estar 4 horas sentado como si estuviese meditando y se despierta y sin calentar, no sé, no está dormido, se levanta y sin calentar te hace 3 cuádruples. Es inentendible, es, no… no se puede entender, por eso yo creo que es la parte más mística y más de que nadie conoce de, de lo que es Yuzuru. Y creo que al final pues se ha sabido gestionar muy bien, toda su trayectoria deportiva… por que no es nada fácil mantenerse en lo alto durante tantos años, y sobre todo con… siendo un héroe en su país. Es un héroe. La presión mediática, los comentarios –al final hay otros patinadores. Si en Japón hay un poquito más de competición entre deportistas y entre fans de los deportistas, pero creo que lo ha sabido llevar muy bien, y creo que después de la competición ha sabido gestionar muy bien el trabajo de después… que sé que está haciendo. Entonces si para mi fue esa parte mística, como dice Dónovan, para mi sería esa parte que nadie conoce que es la parte espiritual, mental… dejemoslo ahí, que no se sabe.

 

Q2: Y Javi, leía en un artículo, por que vosotros habéis sido amigos, rivales, compañeros de entrenamiento, porque entrenabais bajo las órdenes de Braian Orser, leía que era un poco como si Federer y Nadal entrenaran juntos, no? ¿Dirías que te ha hecho mejor patinador entrenar a su lado? ¿Y viceversa, a Yuzuru también entrenar contigo?

 

J: Si, y es algo que nosotros siempre hemos tenido, hemos sido conscientes, igualmente yo como Yuzuru, y lo hemos dicho, no tenemos problema en decirlo, creo que el haber estado entrenando juntos a mi me ha… me enseñó el entender hasta qué punto te puedes… puedes trabajar, puedes esforzarte. Yo vi una persona como Yuzuru entrenando y digo “uh! Tengo que seguir entrenando, tengo que esforzarme más!” Había una competición en el hielo, donde si él hacía un programa corto, un programa largo limpio, yo también lo quería hacer. No es que… me salía de mi dentro decir “no me va a ganar!” “Aunque no sea una competición pero voy a intentar hacer también un programa perfecto.” Creo que con él pues al final pasaba lo mismo, él también lo dice que él, una de las razones por las que vino a entrenar con Brian era porque estaba yo ahí, porque quería ver, y quería aprender de cómo hacía yo los saltos, no? Porque para él antiguamente era de los mejores saltos que había visto , y bueno, pues al final son motivos para los que a nosotros nos ha funcionado también entrenar. Que eso quiere decir que en los entrenamientos fuera todos paz y amor, no. Obviamente que no, pues al final estamos compitiendo, estamos entrenando, entonces estamos cansados, lo queremos hacer bien y es cierto que en algunos días pues no era fácil estar entrenando con la persona con la que te ibas a batir en unos días.
