Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu visits Miyagi Prefecture Vice Governor

Yuzuru Hanyu (a third-year student at Sendai Municipal Nanakita Junior High School), who is set to compete in the World Junior Figure Skating Championships (beginning March 8 in the Netherlands), paid a courtesy visit to Miyagi Prefecture Vice Governor Shuichi Miura (61) on the 9th.

Hanyu won the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final last December and achieved his third consecutive victory at the National Junior High School Championships last month, establishing himself as a promising young talent. With the Vancouver Olympics set to begin on the 12th (13th in Japan), Hanyu is steadily honing his skills with his sights set on the Sochi Olympics four years later.

He will enter Tohoku High School in Miyagi Prefecture in April. The school is a prestigious institution that has produced four Olympic figure skaters, including Shizuka Arakawa, the gold medalist at the Turin Olympics, as well as Takeshi Honda, Yamato Tamura, and Marie Arai.

Hanyu spoke with determination, saying: "Over the next three years, I want to develop my abilities properly and aim to qualify for the Sochi Olympics."
