Japan’s Rising Stars Take Flight

Young skaters aged 13 to 18 who will shape the future of Japanese figure skating. Here, we introduce excerpts from comments made by nine of the junior skaters who participated in the training camp.

YUZURU HANYU

Born December 7, 1994, in Sendai / Miyagi FSC / 3rd place at the Japan Junior Championships, 1st place at the Japan Novice A Championships

"My short program (SP) and free skate (FS) programs have only just been put together, but during this training camp, I received feedback on elements such as the step sequences and transitions between jumps in my free skate. As I prepare for the upcoming season, I want to focus on improving those areas.

My short program is set to the ending song from the film Moulin Rouge. My coach told me not to worry about the plot of the movie, but rather to listen to the music repeatedly and perform based on what I personally feel when I hear it.

As for my free skate, set to Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, I also want to deliver a performance that reflects my own interpretation and the image I have in mind, just as I do with my short program.

If I get the opportunity to compete in the Junior Grand Prix this season, I want to approach it as a challenge and give the best performance I possibly can."
