A message of support has arrived from Yuzuru Hanyu

Recently, our school received a signed photo panel with a handwritten message from Yuzuru Hanyu, the Olympic men's figure skating champion who won back-to-back gold medals.

This generous gift was made possible thanks to Tatsuya Noike, Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University.

Hanyu’s grandfather, who worked at the Tohoku Regional Construction Bureau (now Basque Co., Ltd.), had a close relationship with Professor Noike through radiation research conducted during river surveys.

Additionally, thanks to a connection through Mr. Yutaka Onuma, a resident of the Oguni area who participated in the Renewable Energy Promotion Association founded by Professor Noike, a link was formed between Hanyu and our school.

After his victory parade in Sendai, Hanyu visited his family home and heard from his grandfather about Oguni Elementary School. Upon learning that our school was affected by the nuclear accident following the Great East Japan Earthquake, he said he would be honored to support us and wrote a message and signed the panel.

We plan to unveil this special gift at the school sports day on the 20th.

Spoiler

On the 11th, a panel photo bearing the autograph of Yuzuru Hanyu, who achieved back-to-back victories in men’s figure skating at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, was presented to Oguni Elementary School in Date City, Fukushima Prefecture.

It was gifted through Tatsuya Noike, Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University. According to the school, Mr. Noike is an acquaintance of Hanyu’s grandfather. The donation came to fruition through a connection with Yutaka Onuma, a resident of the Oguni district of Date City, who participated in the Renewable Energy Promotion Association founded by Mr. Noike and others.

The Oguni district, where the school is located, was partially designated as a specific evacuation-recommended zone after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. After his victory parade in April, Hanyu heard about the school from his grandfather and said, “I’d really like to support them,” leading him to donate the panel.

In addition to his autograph, the panel includes the message:
“To everyone at Oguni Elementary School, stay healthy and do your best!”

Mr. Noike visited the school and handed the panel directly to Principal Sachie Nemoto. The panel is to be displayed within the school.

A message from Yuzuru Hanyu

Happy New Year!
We look forward to your continued support this year as well.

There are only two days left of winter break. How is your homework coming along?

During the break, a banner and messages of support from Oguni Elementary School were delivered to Yuzuru Hanyu, who had returned to Japan. Just before heading back to Canada, a message from Hanyu was conveyed through his family:

“Thank you very much. I’ll do my best too, so please take care of yourselves and do your best as well.”

In Reiwa 2 (2020), Oguni Elementary continues to receive encouragement from Hanyu.
Let’s keep doing our best as “Team Oguni”!
