My father, who had always played baseball, wanted me to play ball sports, especially for a boy. He often played catch with me. I also liked baseball, and I was torn between both until I was about in first grade.

 

Rebellious Period

 

My first figure skating coach was very scary, and I often complained to my mother, saying, "I really wanted to play baseball." My mother would reply, "Then, just quit." But hearing that made me want to continue skating even more.

 

My sister quit skating when she was preparing for university entrance exams, but I think it was a huge burden for my parents to support both of us in skating. Financially and with all the driving to competitions, it was a lot to handle.

 

My mother still accompanies me to all my overseas trips and practices. As figure skating is an individual sport, she has been a huge support in terms of managing my health and diet. Since we've always been together, we often fight. When I was in junior high school, I saw the other skaters becoming more independent, and there was a time when I would say, "You don't have to follow me." When she’d suggest things for my performance, like "You should do it more like this," I would rebel and say, "I can’t do it."

 

My sister is an experienced skater, so she understands and says, "You can’t do that, right?" But gradually, I started to realize that I’ve been able to achieve results because my mother has been there for me, and I no longer felt the need to be rebellious.

 

Until before the earthquake, almost all of my costumes were handmade by my mother. Before competitions, she would stay up for several nights making them for me. When I wore those costumes, it made me feel determined, like "I’m going to do this." After the earthquake, I moved between various training sites and couldn’t carry a sewing machine with me, so my mother couldn’t make the costumes for me anymore.

再びリンクへ

東日本大震災から十日たったこ ろ、母に「スケートを修理しよう」って言われたんです。 仙台市のリンクで 中に被災しました。スケート靴のままげた から、靴が駄目になっていたんです。

震災後も、フィギュアを続 けたい気持ちはあったけど、 家族には言えませんでした。 仙台市内の自宅は全壊し、避麺所で四日間過ごしました。 フィギュアどころじゃなかっ たし、何よりリンクの建物が壊れるのをこの目で見ていたので...。やめなきゃいけないのかなって。

震災で意識変化

母の言葉で、また練習を始 めることになりました。 その 時は、初めて滑った時の喜び を思い出しました。再開後 は、練習できるリンクを求 め、母と二人で横浜市や青森 県八戸市など各地を転々とし ていたので、地元に残った父や姉と離れていることがとても不安でした。震災を経験し、家族に支えられて、みんなっているんだっていう意識に変わりましたね。

フィギュアを始めたのは四歳年上の姉の影響です。幼稚の時、姉が通っていたフィギュアの体験教室について行って「自分もやりたい」って、いつも姉の後ろをついて 回っていて、姉のすることは 何でもやりたかったんですよね。姉を超えたいっていう気 持ちが強かった。小学校四年で二回転半ジャンプをべた時は「やっと追いついた」とうれしかったですね。跳び方は姉が教えてくれました。

 父は、自分がずっと野球をやっていたこともあって。男の子には球をやらせたかったみたいです。 よくキャッチボールをしてくれました。
自分も野球が好きだったし、一年生くらいまでは、どちらをやるかどっていました。

反発した時期も

フィギュアの最初のコーチがとても怖くて「本当は野球がしたかった」って、よく母に愚痴っていました。そしたら「やめればいいじゃん」って言うんです。そう言われて、逆にやりたい気持ちが大きくなったんですよ。

姉は大学受験を機にやめてしまったんですが、姉弟二人にフィギュアをやらせたのは、両親には大きな負担だったと思います。金銭的にも、試合の送り迎えなんかも。
母は今でも国外遠征や練習に全て一緒に来てくれます。個人競技なので、体調管理や食事の面で支えてくれる存在として、とても大きいんです。
母とは、ずっと行動を共にしているので、けんかもよくします。
中学生のころは、周りの選手が自立しているのを見て「ついて来なくていい」って言っていた時期もありました。
演技のことも「もっと、こうしたら」とか言われたりすると「できないんだって」って反発したり。

姉はその点、経験者だから「できないよね」って理解してくれます。
でも、だんだんと母がいてくれるから結果が残せているんだって思うようになって、反発する気持ちもなくなっていきました。

震災の前まで、衣装はほぼ 全て母の手作りでした。試合前は、何日も徹夜して作ってくれるんです。それを着ると、「やるぞ」って気持ちになりますね。震災の後は、各地の練習場を転々としていたので、ミシンを持って移動することもできず、作ってもらえませんでしたけど。

「夢はオリンピックで金メダルを取ること」と、ずっと言ってきました。実現したら 次はプロになって、お金を げるようになったら両親に 返ししたい。被災した東北の 人たちのためにも、自分があ っと力になれる存在になれたらいいな、と思います。
