Sendai City School Teacher Recruitment Guide 2025

Message from Yuzuru Hanyu:

"How much do you understand?"

I spent my elementary, junior high, and high school years in Sendai. Looking back on these 12 years, I have experienced much joy, frustration, and hardship. And throughout these experiences, I was always surrounded by friends, teachers, and classes.

I am especially grateful to my teachers. I had the opportunity to meet many teachers with unique personalities, including kind teachers, strict teachers, passionate teachers, quiet teachers, and teachers who were good at teaching.

Now, I also have the opportunity to teach skating classes. I feel the difficulty of conveying what I think and feel. In such moments, I often recall how the teachers who have guided me in the past taught me.

During my elementary school lessons, when I was struggling and didn’t understand something, the teacher would ask, "How much do you understand?" and "What do you think you should do next?"

The question wasn’t "What don’t you understand?" but "How much do you understand?" At the time, I think I wanted the teacher to show me how to find the answer, but now, looking back, I believe the teacher was helping me develop the ability to analyze "what I can do" and figure out "what to do next," nurturing my ability to self-assess and solve problems independently.

Now, as I listen to each person’s specific goals, I want to focus not only on "teaching," but on supporting them in discovering how they want to approach things and enjoy growing together.

To all of you who are aiming to become teachers, I hope you will connect with the hearts of the children and students, support the growth of the children in Sendai, and also enjoy Sendai yourselves.

Thank you very much.
