It's that time of the year - coaching changes 2019/2020

I think Eteri's skaters' consistency comes from doing a bajillion runthroughs, which I'm not sure Shoma's body can take, given how much he was already struggling with his ankle last season. All that is fine when you're 14, but when you're older there's a balance you have to strike between practice and managing injury risk.

I actually don't think Eteri would make him do more transitions. Based on Nathan's scores, that kind of thing is clearly not needed in men's and you're better off saving your energy for jumps. Eteri is the sharpest coach when it comes to maximizing points, so she'll probably take note of that. Does Morisi do a lot of transitions?

I don't know Shoma's traning schedule after injury, but he's known for alot of on ice training. Its just my thought when someone ask if he can gain something with Eteri. It might happen, it might not. Just like Raf, he can fix jumps, he can ruin some. I don't like any of them so it won't be a much difference to me who's he's going to. (I'm thinking Hamada would be a good choice) I'm just glad he might work with other choreographers.

Guys. Guys remember that rumour about a Japanese skater going to Eteri?

WHAT IF??????

I mean probably not, it's ridiculous but

WHAT IF???!!!!???!!!

Listen! I thought about exactly the same and nOW I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING

No, guys, Shoma won't go to Eteri. I think it's not so easy to go to Sambo and simply ask if they will take you. And the only not-russian Eteri skaters I can remember now are Lilbet and Morisi, so no.

Now I wonder if this wasn't mistake in translation and he goes only for summer camp or something. Because Shoma leaving his coach seems really unbelievable.

Hmmmm... I don't think it's set yet. If it's with a US coach we would've heard rumours from TSL (I don't like them but they're generally right with USFS info). The timing is weird though? If you want a coaching change it usually happens around May because by Jun/Jul you should be finished with your new programs. If he's shopping around deciding based on the training camps he's going to attend is there any guarantee that they'll take him in (whichever camp he chooses?).

Raf has said before that he won't take in any student that can be a rival for Nathan but it also seems that there's been a rift between that relationship since the Olympics (and he's taken in Gogolev). There's Tom Z but there were rumours that he's splitting with the coaching team at Broadmoor. He did jump training with Ourashiev at Glacier Ice Arena before but I don't think he's Ourashiev is a registered coach. Eteri? She doesn't have the same credentials/success with men's skating. Mishin? Lee Berkel? I keep seeing Stephane on twitter but honestly Shoma needs a tech specialist. Plushenko? hahahahaha

On a sad note, this kinda highlights how figure skating is such a small circle/world. There's only a handful of well known coaches and you know that part of your score (unfortunately) can lie with your coaching team's reputation.

He's already done programs with Higuchi/Yamada, I think. Or at leas that was the plan. Maybe it was decided in the middle that he needs to try something new.

It could totally be Barkell, but IDK how his rep stands now that he's no longer associated with the TCC.

There's Ravi Walia. Despite not being the most prolific coach, he was able to coach Osmond to a medal and in the Olympics and Worlds.

The thing is, Shoma may have had a less than encouraging year but he's still added to his impressive pile of medals - and got his first international gold. So if he's looking to a coach that can take him higher.... there really can't be that many on this list?

NHK news confirms it.

Translation :

NHK confirmed that Shoma Uno will be practicing several places before deciding his new training base and coach.

This explains why he was secretive about his off season training!

It’s still possible he’ll choose a coach in Japan, but it sounds like he’s leaning toward overseas.

I am really glad Shoma is moving on. I fell in love with his skating in the Loco season. Then I was mildly disappointed with Turandot. I was extremely disappointed with Moonlight Sonata. I hope whoever he goes to will give him better choreography! And will help him improve his technique, obviously... But, please, no more of those crossover fests accentuated by dramatic fist clenching.

Then hope to God he goes to Eteri (or Brian or Lambiel but those are extremely unlikely) and not Raf or Mishin or Zakrajsek. Because then it'll be worse.

But let me be honest: from the outside pov, I don't see any coach who could improve Shoma's results other than Raf.  And Raf trains Shoma's greatest rival, so I'm not sure whether Shoma would consider going there.

There is another coach, but that coach teaches Shoma's senpai.

I don't think Hamada is good choice. She has Rika, Satoko, Yuna, Ayaka... iirc, some juniors (both girls and boys) and WHOLE ARMY of novice girls. Meanwhile Shoma and his jumps need a lot of attention (iirc whole season he wasn't able to do 4-3 combo in SP).
