I'm 50/50 on Fruits Basket (Furuba, anyone?) getting another anime. The feel of the original anime, the soft opening, and Momiji's onsen song was perfect. Also, I love the manga so much that no adaptation will be good enough. It's also perhaps one of the very few series with a huge cast of characters where I love a majority and their ships.

Spoiler

Although... I tried so hard to get into Machi for Yuki's sake, but I just couldn't. For me she was a late throw in for him to get a ship.

Also, I will forever stan Yuki but the clear OTP was KyoXTohru and the convenient twist of Yuki only viewing Tohru as a mother was a cop-out (imo his feelings for Tohru was more platonic anyway so it would have been fine if he just walked away from the "love triangle").

Surprised no one has mentioned Inuyasha or Fushigi Yuugi yet. I feel like both were super popular back in their days and yet seemed to be forgotten by present anime fans (or maybe it's just an issue of where I've not been lurking). Strange, because I think both were among the biggest names in romance anime back then and had a strong following. (Although sorry to the fans, but I have an extreme dislike for Fushigi Yuugi and it contributed to me not being able to finish Akatsuki no Yona because of the similarity in the beginning of the heroine and her harem, even though I was promised it will get better). Inuyasha's ost will always be legendary for me (and I wish a skater will pick it up, at least for an ex).

Anyway,  more opinion time.

Hikaru no Go is the runaway GOAT of its genre and many years had passed before I found another equal that gave me similar vibes - Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (sans the loli). Ryuuou no Oshigoto is disliked though (because of the loli and watering down of content in the anime) so this is an unpopular opinion. I've only seen the anime so I'm hoping to pick up the light novel one day which was promised to be much better. Also, Sangatsu no Lion was therefore recommended to anyone who disliked Ryuuou no Oshigoto but imo it and Chihayafuru are closer in vibes because of focus outside of the game. I want more anime like these.

Yes on your spoiler, totally agree.

I've always had a soft spot for Inuyasha (the character) but for the life of me I could never stand Kagome and thus it's not on my favorites. But boy oh boy do I have feelings for Inuyasha. Also the whole Kikyou thing was emo as hell but at the time in my life it was perfect and I was addicted.

I'll look for Ryuuou no Oshigoto. I love Sangatsu no Lion to death, it portrays characters so artfully (in my opinion of course), and it really made me want to learn shogi xD so I guess it's doing its job?

I'm still heartbroken over Hikaru no Go. Honestly, it should come with a disclaimer. I can't with all these mind blowingly good but unfinished stories.

Honestly, if Inuyasha didn't have Sesshomaru I don't think I would have been as invested in Inuyasha as I was. :P Agreed about Kagome. One thing that annoyed me about her was that she had a bow and arrow, had priestess powers, and was from the present with access to many modern gadgets, but was barely ever helpful! I wish the author could have done more with her. KikyouXInuyasha and KenshinXTomoe were beautiful tragic love stories from my childhood that twisted my poor young soul, but I couldn't get enough of it. Nowadays I don't think I can risk pouring my heart out for such epic but heart-wrenching pairings again.

Please do check it out, but set your expectations low for Ryuuou no Oshigoto! I love it A LOT, but it is unfortunately a product of the times - lolicon sells :(. Apparently the light novel goes into Hikaru no Go level details on shogi and makes it interesting, that's why the Japanese shogi association actually endorsed it (or want to endorse it) - but the anime cut out a lot. Okay, I'm giving it crap, but the shogi parts of the anime are still really great and exhilarating, and so worth it!

Sangatsu no Lion is sooooo good. I don't know if there's been any updates on an English license for the manga, but I need it to be so I can possess all of the volumes.

I console myself that Hikaru no Go concluded realistically, but honestly I wanted to see more of Hikaru kicking butt and his development, even if not to the end, well then to when it was more satisfying - that was a letdown. Hikaru no Go will always be a sore spot for me because I don't think my thirst for it was ever quenched.

Sesshomaru is hot as hell.

Sorry.

Let's continue with a more civil conversation, pardon my exabrupt :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

Totally agree on the Kagome. She really had a lot of potential and I don't think it was ever exploited. She always felt to me like a whiny and selfish kid, and that's that.

Jesus christ KenshinXTomoe ruined me. I want to watch the ovas again, show them to my boyfriend, but I'm actually scared, because I remember the feeling and it was pure heartbreak.

I will come back once I have seen Ryuuou no Oshigoto, I'll be careful not to get my hopes up :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

And yes to the Sangatsu no Lion manga... I need ittttt...

Hikaru no Go hurts me. It was magical. It was in such a good place. It had so much to give. :sadPooh:

And yes thank you so much :cri: finally someone I can cry together with about 5 cms per second, dammit, I have been obsessing over it for almost two years now...I haven't watched the Garden, I will ASAP, and yes of course Your Name is beautiful as hell and I loved it! Funny story under spoilers because...well, spoilers:

  Reveal hidden contents

When I took my boyfriend to see Your Name at the theater, I made him watch 5 cms the day before so he knew more or less of Makoto Shinkai's style, and when they pass each other by the stairs at the end and they don't say anything he literally yelled "OH COME ON NOT AGAIN" :rofl:it was really embarrassing and the whole room laughed, good thing it didn't end up as heartbreaking as 5 cms, he would have hated me forever

5 centimeters per second broke me--it was that perfect mix of the sadness of the three parts PLUS the bittersweet OST that kills me each and every time.

Also hahaha at your boyfriend! I'm glad he got into it though! All I remember from watching Your Name in the theaters were people crying along with me and clapping at the end.

@Forcefield Inuyasha and Fushigi Yuugi were also part of my childhood! I have to say though, I enjoyed Fushigi Yuugi a lot :68468287: I think it was also one of the first animes that I drew as a kid.

and Sangatsu no Lion is really good. Love the vibe of it and the colors.

Ah and I forgot one more anime/manga I like! Initial D, anyone? The ending was so abrupt, but I enjoyed it for its run.

@Forcefield I loved Inuyasha, it had amazing character, but the story started to drag halfway through and I wasn't really invested by the end. Though the movies are brilliant and I will always recommend them.

Spoiler

I admit I was so ready to kill Kikyou myself at some point

Fushigi Yuugi never really worked for me, even though in theory it is there with the type of anime I enjoy. I don't think I got past the first few episodes.

Fushigi Yuugi was a really compelling idea and I actually love the prequels (ugh, Genbu crushed me) but I wasn't sold on Miaka and Tamahome and their world defying love, so it destroyed my experience. I wished Yui was the heroine. It has good points, the lore was wonderful, so I do understand why people like it.

I only saw the first season of Initial D (and was told I wasn't missing out on anything if I didn't see the rest) and it was HYPE. The opening song is still lit asf. Drifting. Is. So. Cool.

I get it. I didn't watch Inuyasha linearly from start to end, I watched it out of order and had to piece it together (so I may have never seen every single episode). Even I found it tedious to watch at some parts. Inuyasha will always be to me one of those classic anime with its many faults, untouchable in memory and feels, but rewatching the entire series is out of the question, maybe just random episodes or scenes.

Oh, do you remember what about Fushigi Yuugi that stopped you from getting into it? Or what specific parts about it or types of anime do you typically enjoy?

Yep, even when an anime check off the boxes of what I might enjoy, sometimes it doesn't click with me so recommendations are always a hit or miss.

Lmao if I'm truly being honest, Miaka was the least one I liked out of all the priestesses. She was just all around dumb--and even dumber for Tamahome. I do prefer Yui as well--it was too bad Seiryuu didn't have its own arc.

And I...do agree on Initial D. It's quite repetitive, and nothing comes quite close to when Takumi was still this unknown downhill specialist from nowhere driving a tofu delivery car :68468287: still, I enjoyed watching every season!

Re: Furuba, I want them to try completing it at least. FMA had Brotherhood and that was a good attempt at completing it (though I wouldn't say the first FMA was bad--the intro episodes were still amazing), HxH had the second try too. Maybe they'll make it even better, who knows?

This was a long time ago but I do remember not liking the heroine much, that was probably it .. I like fantasy in general, whether it is novels, anime, TV, or movies so Fushigi Yuugi did seem interesting. However, for me the characters are the biggest draw. If I like the characters, I can forgive bad plot and other stuff. If I don't, then I can lose interest even in the best of stories.

Hmm... I started watching anime as a child. I can't remember when the first time was, probably when I was 4, watching Pokemon?

My top anime, only 7 (don't count the others as favorites), and in no particular order:

- Nodame Cantabile

- Monster

- Cardcaptor Sakura: my all-time favorite. Been watching since I was 5.

- Yuri on Ice: this one has a special place in my heart because I already watched skating because of Yuzu, but it inspired me to actually learn it. Perhaps because the characters are so relatable. That, and it got me through my senior year of college...

- Ouran High School Host Club (but the manga is so much better)

- Digimon Adventure

- Natsume Yuujinchou

Other stuff I've enjoyed: Kimi no Todoke, Barakamon, Haikyuu, ReLife, Toradora, Death Note, Madoka, Boku no Hero, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, Death Parade, Snow White with the Red Hair, Ano Hana, Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, and probably others I can't think of right now.

I used to love SnK until the plot dissolved into... actually, I'm still not entirely sure what happened there...

And honorable mention goes to Cromartie High School for being the most ridiculous thing I've ever watched. But the Queen references cracked me up. I do wonder how I watched the whole thing while sober. Quite a mystery.

I've watched a lot more, but I probably didn't enjoy them, or in some cases, actively disliked them, but watched the whole thing anyway because I have no life :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

And looking at that list... I suddenly understood why I'm never productive :xD: And let's not get into how many times I've rewatched some of them...

Oh, favorite characters... Yue from CCS and Kyouya from Ouran.

And favorite genre... Well, from the list I think it's fairly easy to tell it's slice of life/shoujo. Funny, though, because not counting the ones with the nostalgia factor, Monster is tied for the top with Nodame Cantabile.

I totally loved Nodame Cantabile's manga, I'd even put it between my favorite mangas, but then I tried watching the anime and, well, it was a bit of a let down and never watched past the 3rd episode. I'm not sure why I didn't like it, really. I was probably expecting too much.

Monster is awesome! But it was hard to follow when it was coming out, lol, so I lost track of it and never finished it. But SUCH GOOD CHARACTERS damn that's a good anime. Tried reading the manga, I can't remember if I liked it, it was a loooong time ago...

You definitely like the cool type guys :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:with Kyouya and Yue...

FFS seriously :rofl:the new chapter annoyed me up the wall, I'm really starting to lose interest and I'm so sad about it because I loooooooove it :sadPooh: come on I'm not even asking for a kiss or romance or anything...just...STOP OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING.

I was really happy with the whole training and battling for the ninja character though. But still.

OMG, what happened!? I put Skip Beat on hold YEARS ago because the no development annoyed me and I was planning to pick it up when there was something. If it's still same old, same old, it's not the characters anymore, but the mangaka is getting annoying tbh.
